What a gem! This place was right around the corner from our motel and after seeing some great reviews on Yelp, we had to stop in for dessert some evening. Let me say we weren't disappointed. This is a locals' joint, clearly. They do serve lunch/dinner but it's in the back and I'm not really sure what's on the menu either. No matter, when you enter you know what it's all about. Pie and ice cream. The ice cream seems to be some brand I've never heard of before but was still pretty good. But it's all about the pies, make no mistake, and the ice cream knows it's there just to be a la mode. I had to get the rhubarb pie (a la mode) and my wife chose blueberry. My son, bless his heart, decided on an ice cream cone (cotton candy flavor). He is 6 after all. My daughter, ever wise, followed mom's lead except went a la mode with it. The rhubarb was hands down the best one I've ever had. Also, the blueberry was outstanding with a strong touch of cinnamon in both the crust and filling. If I could handle it I would have done another slice but I wisely chose not to (it's wafer thin!). One note about the crust, it's not the flaky kind but was still really good. If you like pie, I definitely recommend swinging by and enjoying some. Don't expect it'll be the best ever but it really is fabulous and in South Dakota that's saying something. read more

We had stayed down the road and wanted a quick lunch. I was a bit leary about eating at the place seeing that it was purple! To my surprise the food was actually good. We both had grilled cheese sandwiches. My wife had the homemade chicken soup and I had the homemade potato salad. Both were very good. The pie is what this place is know for though. I had the Cherry and my wife had the Apple. There were both very filling pies but delicious! Overall, this is a great place for a quick lunch if you end up traveling through the town of Custer, SD. read more

WOWZA!! You're taste buds will explode. We had the rhubarb x2, the strawberry-rhubarb x5, the bumbleberry, the peach...all vanilla ala mode. Nope, not all at once....we ended up going there, for dessert, EVERY damn day...yeah, we were in Custer for 4 nights. We could not leave the town without buying a whole strawberry-rhubarb pie. No one in this place is following any health guidelines. None of the patrons were wearing masks and much more surprising, neither were any of the staff. No gloves either while handling your food. No social distancing. Feeling completely unsafe I left after a few minutes. Given the popularity of the place, if cases spike in this area, this place should be considered as an epicenter of this disease. read more

There was always a line, but believe the majority of customers ordered ice cream and pie. We ordered a piece of Bumbleberry, and thought it tasted like rhubarb, which sure enough when we asked, that's what it was. They brought us a piece of Bumbleberry, which didn't taste much different, so we passed on ordering a pie to go. A lot of wait staff, nice, but they didn't seem to know what they were doing, two of them constantly confused and looking perplexed. We were eating our sandwiches at our indoor table and a lady came to take the money for our check, didn't even ask if we wanted dessert. We come to Custer often and love spending time here. Decided to stop in here for the first time for an ice cream fix. Will NOT be back. Watched the people behind the table prepare our two scoops in cones and a malt. One girl picked something off her shoe on the ground before returning to work on another customer's banana split. The girl working on our order played with her hair. The guy who took our money handed us our order. No gloves and no hand washing involved by anyone. Pandemic concerns aside, just from a pure food handling hygiene standpoint this was absolutely disgusting. Didn't eat the ice cream and the malt was grainy. The sight of pie was a promising one in the lackluster town of Custer. After dinner we headed to The Purple Pie Place to grab some dessert to bring back to the hotel. It was some pretty decent pie and definitely worth the trip if you're in the area. The Purple Pie Place is a pretty small stop with a few tables on the inside. They do have some sandwiches to order for lunch or dinner, as well as hard ice cream, but the main attraction is the pie. $4.25 will get you a slice, and before you balk at the price, let me tell you that you get your money's worth. The pie slices are huge and literally stuffed with filling. Whether you're a fruit guy or a cream gal, you'll find a pie you'll like. I got the Strawberry Rhubarb, and it was pretty fantastic. The crust is light and the filling is, well, filling. The pie was stuffed with the sweet and tart combination that I love in a good ol' SR pie. I will say that there is probably too much filling, and you will definitely be stuffed after devouring a piece. The missus' ordered the Peach Pie and I liked her fresh fruit filling better than my preserve-based filling. My sister got the Blackberry Pie and hers ended up being a bit too gelatinous with the filling...definitely steer clear of that one. In a town that has limited dining options, The Purple Pie Place is definitely worth the visit if you're in the area and have a sweet tooth craving. read more

After you see Mount Rushmore or Wind Cave or Jewel Cave or whatever else is in the Black Hills area of South Dakota, you'll probably end up passing through Custer. And while you're passing through Custer, you'll probably see this crazy-looking purple building on the highway. And you should definitely stop for some pie. The day was nice, and the screen doors were shut with the inner door open. There was a little patio with sliding doors, and the whole place felt like a real kitchen with the breeze blowing through. I had TWO pie slices, one was apple and one was rhubarb. I've had apple pie before, and this was pretty good. I'd never had rhubarb, and it was fantastic. There is a huge ice cream selection that you can get with your pie, and definitely get the coffee. They make it well and the refills keep coming. Yeah, so they nuke the pie to warm it up. Get over it. It does the job, and the pies can't be fresh all day (they've got to turn a profit, I'd imagine, instead of throwing out pies). You can also order an entire pie and they'll box it up in the back. The place serves food - I'm not sure how it is, but I imagine the pies are the stars. Stopped by here on a Sunday because most other restaurants were closed. Was excited to try the chicken pot pie after reading all the reviews-- was it the best chicken pot pie ever? No. Did it full a craving? Yes. I had the chicken noodle soup which was too salty for my taste but had nice big chunks of chicken in it. We also had the bumbleberry pie which was good bc it wasn't too sweet. Again we are spoiled coming from LA where amazing food abounds. Rhubarb is a plant name for the many different species of Rheum, growing in the wild in the mountains of the Western and North-western provinces of China and in the adjoining Tibetan territory and in cultivation in much of Europe and the United States. (courtesy of wikipedia) So I've always heard of this Rhubarb pie, which sounded disgusting but I had to try it cause I didn't get my cottage cheese from not trying. The pie was yummy..tasted like a tart apple pie. This place is adorable with 3 entrances, which you can't miss on the side of the road going to mount rushmore. There's this ice cream that is half vanilla & strawberry with delicious chocolate chunks. So delicious...i thought it was hand made too, but I'll take the high fructose for that kind of flavor! The decor is fun, and the staff is friendly and helpful. My husband had a panini and our kiddos each got grilled cheese. They all enjoyed their food. I ordered the "prime rib dip." The au jus was tasty, but the sandwich was hands-down the worst French dip I've ever had. The meat wasn't flavorful and it was in small pieces. It kept falling out of the sandwich and on to my plate or in the au jus. I ate it, because we spent all morning hiking in the Needles and I was starving. An ice cream store in the front, and a small dining area in the back. We had the dinner special - chicken pot pie, and my son had the child's hot dog. Woefully underwhelmed with this place. As others have stated, it's the same ice cream (Blue Bell, I believe) that you get at the grocery store. Tonight I was very excited to see this restaurant so close to where I was staying. I was seated very quick, thank you. But from there the server really dropped the ball. It took close to 10 minutes before she finally arrived and the greeting was a cold "you know what you want". She never said another word to me after that.
