We visited Custer during the COVID times. Love the town, love Purple Pie Place. We loved it so much we ate there twice. We got there late one evening. We went to the Purple Pie Place in Custer on the 4th of July. This might not been a good day to go. It was very hot inside the shop. There was a line and the people behind us were pushing. When we got to the counter the service was poor. They were out of peanut butter pie. The ice cream was unremarkable Blue Bunny. We ended up getting significantly over charged for the 3 scoops of ice cream we got for kids. Fortunately, my husband went in and told them of the error and they refunded him. Unbelievable pie! We were visiting from Colorado and this was one place I wouldn't miss out on. The Rasberry Rhubard Jalepeno pie was what I would imagine pie made in Heaven tastes like. The apple pie was top notch and the peach was amazing. The owner is a Vietnam Vet and a super cool dude. Highly, highly recommend trying if you're visiting or passing through Custer. I grew up in the Black Hills and have since moved away. This has become a must stop whenever I come home. It is hugely popular so plan on waiting, but it is well worth your time. We went here tonight based on the yelp reviews. I love pie but was very disappointed. The chicken pot pie special was bland and weirdly sweet or maybe cinnamony. The bumbleberry pie (mixed berry with rhubarb and apple) was also lacking flavor. The ice cream on the side of the pie was the highlight. It was creamy and yummy. Purple Pie Place was a recommendation from our river guide at the Grand Tetons. We were so glad to take her up on this! We each ordered pie. My mother got the strawberry rhubarb, I got peach and my daughter got peanut butter with strawberry ice cream. None of the pie disappointed and the strawberry rhubarb lived up to its reputation. Delicious! We also had lunch. The chicken pot pie was amazing. There was a generous portion. My daughter ordered the prime rib panini. It was also a generous portion and delicious. We left satisfied and happy with matching purple t-shirts (our "camp shirts" as a memento to a fabulous journey) and headed home to Texas. Surely I'll have pie dreams for years to come! read more
