Possibly the worst diner I've come across while traveling in US. Portions are small, expensive for their quality (and quantity - I've got 4 small shrimps and 4 small dry scallops for a price of 25 bucks). Seriously, most of stuff they serve can be done with basic cooking skills and looks more of a joke than restaurant food. The only star I give, is for staff who work hard and do their best to keep this place running.. though at the end of my dinner I've witnessed an act of sexual harassment from old worm-type looking manager towards one of the young waitresses - and that irrevocably ruined a slight hope for good impression of the evening. I always come out of this restaurant feeling sticky -- and not just from the syrup on the delicious french toast and pancakes. The entire place could use a scrub and general touch up (torn canvas booths hastily patched with dirty duct tape, stained plastic menus). The breakfast food is mostly great -- our party enjoyed eggs perfectly cooked, well-sized portions of french toast, and a belgian waffle. However, the homefries were extremely dry; the waiter replaced them with a new serving - equally if not more dry. I like the food but watch out. They charge about 5.00 for a glass of iced tea and then charge you for refills. When I complained, they said they hear that allot. This diner is in my backyard. I want to like it. I love diners, however every other time we go there's always a disappointment. This last time was one of those times. My hamburger had a hard bay leaf seared to it under the cheese. I thought the burger had an odd taste that I could not put my finger on. That was until I bit down into that hard dry bay leaf. Quite a suppose. I told the waiter, and even showed him the bay leaf. He looked at it an said " oh". Not even an apology. My wife's diner had no surprises. It was just an average basic diner meal. This was not the first time i have had a quality issue, but it will be the last. Classic little diner that has been around for years. Always a crowd and town favorite. I remember hanging out here in high school and nothing has changed. Good food for a good price. I've been to the Putnam Diner a couple of times now and despite the fact that the place could use a decent scrubbing, the food and service here has yet to disappoint. Their coffee is pretty damned amazing (you smell it as you walk in -- a great sign for a diner), their service is exceptional, food is served up quickly and I've not had a bad experience yet. I'm a Long Island resident and the Putnam Diner is far better in terms of food and coffee quality than most of the places on Long Island. We continue to get breakfast food even for dinner here and that is largely us but it is also because of how good a job they do at breakfast food. Case in point -- English Muffins. There is a right and wrong way to do them. The Putnam Diner grills the muffin and butters it before it is brought to the table. The end result is that the butter is melted by the time it arrives for you to eat. I'm sure people with dietary restrictions would not be shy about asking them not to do this but I'm elated each time it is done properly. I also asked for an iced coffee to go although I was drinking it hot with my meal. No problem. Victoria, our waitress, is my new best friend. She made no big deal of that request. She also was pretty patient answering questions for us. At most, there looked to be two waitresses on in addition to the hostess. They had the room under control. The Putnam Diner used to have more competition with the Texas Taco formerly next door. That's gone now. Still, Red Rooster is right around the curve within ten minutes from their door. This is a solid place to land when driving through the area. Sole pitfall really is their restrooms which could use an updating. read more

I have been here a number of times, it is a frequent dinner spot for my family and I. The staff is always helpful as my mother and I have very restrictive food allergies. And the food is usually good, sometimes a little over cooked but not bad. That is until tonight. My parents and I went to have a nice relaxing dinner. My mom saw something she was interested in and asked the waitress if there was flour, corn starch or any type of coating in the veal. The waitress asked both the chef and the manager, and they said no. So she ordered it with double sauteed spinach (we have a potato allergy in addition to others) and I ordered their Romanian Steak, medium rare, like I usually do with double mixed veggies. When our dinner came out my Romanian Steak was not medium rare but medium well to well done. My mother's veal came out and the gravy looked thick so she asked the waitress to check with the chef again... as the waitress checked my mom scrapped some type of coating off of the veal. When it was mentioned to the waitress she told us again that there was no coating or flour or corn starch. So my mom starts to eat it and can clearly taste something coating the veal. The manager came over and started making a scene going on about how there's none of this and none of that and he didn't want to have his customers sick, going on and in upsetting my mother and basically ruining what was supposed to be a nice meal. He told my mother that he would take the veal off the check, but when the check came the veal was still there and there was a charge for 2 sauteed spinach. Ordered a medium made hamburger. It was very dry, and extremely well, way overdone. I regret and should have return it. My fault! I saved 1/2 to reward our dog for waiting patiently in the car. He liked it, so it was not a total loss. We did not like their french fries. They appeared to be reconstituted from mash potatoes with some coating on the exterior. In all fairness, I have gone to this restaurant for many years in the past, and was always satisfied, but now they give me the impression that they are slipping. This restaurant has just given up. We have gone here for over 17 years until we just can't stand the food, the staff and utter gross-ness. The past few years we did take out about 3 to 4 times a year and at one time we were here a few times a month. But tonight is officially the end, no more, never again, no thanks! We went to a movie and decided to go for quiet dinner afterwards. I don't know what we were thinking but clearly we weren't making good decisions and hunger took over. We arrived and were are showed to our table in between the only 2 takes with diners, otherwise it was empty. Ok. The waitress, sadly, looks exhausted, vacant and half asleep so it took awhile to even get her attention. I ordered a chocolate milk which was syrup in milk un-stirred. My husband ordered a ginger ale. We each ordered the open face turkey. I got corn and Brussel sprout plus onion soup as a starter. Hubby got broccoli and mashed potatoes with gravy and clam chowder. We started with the soups. Bland, tasteless dish water. However our meals came literally 4 to 5 minutes after the soup arrived, which ironically was more than enough time with the soup. We happily sent sent back bowls almost full. The Brussel sprouts were like chewing on a water logged sponge. I didn't think it was possible to remove 100% of the flavor from the sprouts but just ask Putnam Diner, they can do it. The corn - was yellow and that's the best thing I can say about that. The turkey for both of us was was dry, flavorless and came in light gray and dark gray - prison food? I couldn't stomach any of it, I lost my appetite. Here's the finale, my husband went to take a drink from the fresh refill soda the waitress brought and there was old dried cream or potatoes all over the inside of his glass. Not a spot or a flake but out right globs of dried frothy goo. We called the waitress over (who had been the irresponsible person for actually picked the dirty glass, poured the drink and carried the drink to the table) and she says "oh gross". She apologized but acted confused on how we got a dirty glass, really - you brought it. I told her that our food was completely inedible and that the food had NO flavor at all. She says "yeah, we don't season our vegetables so our sides are bland". WHAT? Really? We asked for our check so we could go home and eat leftovers. She brings the check and they still charged us $20 after so generously removing the rancid soda and 1 meal - mind you we sent back our soup and meals and the contaminated soda. Fine, payed the bill, left a tip and learned a lesson. This diner is all done even trying to produce food worthy of good old comfort food. They should be ashamed serving patrons this garbage, canned, bagged, frozen, microwaved slop when their whole livelihood depends on the public. American comfort food is among some of the easiest food to prepare but clearly they think bulk prison food rations is the way to go. Good job on saving a buck! read more

Food was good, helped to be starving though. I ordered the monte cristo panini, and it came with slaw and sweet potato fries. Terrific, everyone cleared their plates. Pricing was average, 3 meals and an order of their special fries came to $50. Waitress was super nice, except she was a little busy with other tables so it took a long time to get the mustard that came with the panini. Good, clean, fast service. read more

I've been coming here for years and I've never had a complaint. This is the only restaurant that uses filet mignon for the Southern Fried Steak. George, I think he's a manager or should be, I've known him from the restaurant for years he is so professional and courteous. He remembers my order to the letter. Folks, there's not a restaurant that is consistent in every category. Sometimes it's the food, then it's the decor or staff that's not up to par, but this restaurant is one of my favorites in Putnam county, let me say within 30 miles because I live in Dutchess and I still come here. THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE I HAVE EVER ENCOUNTERED. My family of 4 was passing through, and stopped for lunch here. We arrived at 12:15, placed our order by 12:25, and by 1pm still had not received our food (except for our drinks and soup, which came w the meal). Our server was nowhere to be found, and when I asked another server to get him, she said he was busy, our food wasn't up yet, and there are "other customers." By 1:05, we decided to cut our losses and leave. We were charged $15 for the 2 cups of soup and 2 drinks...and no apology offered, no so sorry for the wait, no offer to comp the soups...clearly no care in the world if we left unhappy and dissatisfied ...we will NEVER go back there again. read more

OK, so this review is mildly biased because I have been coming to this diner since I was a teenager, and nostalgia plays a role here. That said, this is one of the only diners I frequent, and mainly for their stuffed mushrooms, fried calamari, and french toast. The wait staff is really friendly, and because I've been going there for over 15 years, a lot of the more permanent staffers know my face, and greet me with enthusiasm. It's comfort food. It's always good. I have never had a bad meal here, and I've tried a large portion of the food on their vast menu. One small critique is that a few years back they changed their bacon (or the way they make it) and I totally hate it now. It's a very strange thing to hate, and I don't know what they've done to make bacon taste bad, but it does. Otherwise, awesome. I went to the put diner with a large group for my moms birthday party ..My family are very specific people when it comes to ordering food and slightly picky so pretty much difficult costumers but they were all as was I extremely happy with the food and service . We had a waitress named Nicole beyond friendly,accommodating always came up to the table with a smile and not once did we have to look around wondering where she was when we needed a refill or anything because she was always right at our table when we needed .
