After visiting the New York Botanical Garden in 100 degree weather, we were desperate for something to eat but also cool us down. I wanted naengmyeon. Google led me to PyeongAnDong. It was a Friday afternoon, but it was also July 3rd so I assume a lot of people either took off or had off. We waited about 30 minutes total. You can join the waitlist online or you can get on the list with the host. We all had their regular naengmyeon and shared an order of suyeok. This was really good, very tender. They also had a lot of banchan, including a green onion pancake, tteokbokki, and japchae. I really enjoyed this selection of banchan. The naengmyeon was really good and honestly, really hit the spot. We waited nearly an hour for a table to become available since this place doesn't take reservations. In hindsight, we should've just gone to Palisades Park and had better Korean from nicer people. The Banchan starters were fine. My Shiregi Sujebi, on the other hand, was a letdown of bland broth and not handmade noodz. Booooo! I love sujebi, and it's so hard to find it even in Korean enclaves--so the fact that it was subpar here made me cry tears of gluten sadness. We also shared the Galbi Jjim for Two, which included Hooshik Naengmyeon (spicy mini cold noodles) and Bokkeumbab (fried rice). Here's where the real trouble started. They didn't bring this out until I was halfway through my Sujebi. After flagging multiple staff hurrying frantically to and fro across the fully packed restaurant, we finally got an answer: They forgot our order. So it was that we ended up digging into the largest portion of our meal nearly an hour after being seated. By that time, the meat was a bit cold and had that stale texture that usually comes when something that was meant to be served fresh has been, you know, sitting on a counter collecting dust. The worst part was, we never really got an apology, and when our bill came, there was no offer to compensate us in any way. Galbi jjim is very well seasoned. It pairs really well with the cold noodles, especially during the summer. Banchan is very high quality; you get a mini jeon, some tteokbokki, japchae, and other typical dishes. The price is high as usual for korean food. I think if you have a party of 3, you can add fried rice to be fried with the meat sauce at the end and that would probably be enough. There is no parking at this restaurant, you would need to street park or park at the municipal parking lot. read more

Tried PyeongAnDong in Fort Lee for the first time and honestly everything we ordered was great. The scallion pancake was a good touch to pair with the main entrees. The spicy braised pork ribs was a table favorite. The meat was super tender and coated in a rich spicy sauce that had a little sweetness to it. One thing I really liked was the stone pot rice. Probably my favorite. After they served it, they mixed the rice in the pot and let it sit on the heat for 5 minutes. The rice at the bottom didn't get that crispy but oh boy the flavor from the meat that was mixed into it soaked into the rice and was absolutely delicious. It almost turned into another dish and honestly is my husbands favorite part of the meal. The noodle soup was also really refreshing with a light broth, lots of scallions, and seaweed. They also bring a lot of banchan and everything tasted fresh. The japchae and bean sprouts were especially good. I liked the beef patty that we ordered too! One tip: if you're coming on the weekend, try to come before noon to get a table. It gets busy pretty quickly and you might end up waiting. People seem to come here for the galbijim (beef short ribs) and cold noodles. Food is tasty and I am writing this review because our waiter was highly entertaining, so this isn't all about the food. The galbijim has add on's where you can add a fried rice and the waiter will cook everything and mix the rice for you. We also had the galbitang, which the waiter recommended but honestly, not very flavorful for me, but then again, I don't think I've ever had one that has made my taste buds sing. please message me if you have a recommendation in the north jersey or ny area. I ordered a gukbab and it had great flavor! the beef in it was super tender too. Really enjoyed the flavor. Better than BCD but worse than Dubuhaus imo. There is a cold noodle place I go in the Hmart food court in Little Ferry and I think it is my ish. However, I had the brightest idea to see if there were other places worth trying so I asked ChatGPT. Chat said this place was ranked 3rd in the Fort Lee and Palisades Park area, but the top two places I've been and they were flops. We went here and let me just say I wanted to come back here the next day but my brother said no bc it was out of our way. We got into a bit of a "fight" due to it and I threw a lot of fits. Anything galbi related at this place truly deserves a chef's kiss... It's as authentic as you get. All the older korean people (esp the ones that have lived in NJ for a long time) know that this place truly does the best job in terms of flavor and deep brewing of the soups. The naengmyun was really good, among the better ones I've had. I don't have kalbijim often, but I'm a fan of the one they serve here--perfect slide-off-bone texture and flavor. The oyster soup tasted very healing, with plenty of oysters and seaweed. I was a little apprehensive because I don't love the taste of raw korean oysters, but they were super fresh and I did prefer them cooked in soup. My oyster soup came with a side of rice and you can choose between regular rice and purple rice with beans. I did get the purple rice and it was a little dry, but it's probably meant to be that way to be able to go well with soup, and have some nurungji (burnt rice) on the bottom. We ordered Fried Rice that utilized the sauce cook it, and it was just okay since there was no meat left to stir fry with. We also ordered Hwangtae Sujaebi (at $18.85), which was more reasonably priced. There supposed be a seafood pancake that comes with Galbi Jjim. The two tables next to us both had it, but not our table. They have very few Banchan selection, and you have to ask for refill. Best Korean food I've had in Jersey! We first got the Spicy Pork Bone Potato soup with Perilla seeds which was just life changing, the broth was so flavorful and comforting, and the pork meat on the bone was fantastic. We also received complimentary kimchi, cucumber salad, a scallion pancake, and so on. As our main course we ordered the Spicy Braised Belt Fish with Radish and Potatoes, it was outstanding with well cooked white fish (though obviously it had bones, it was easy to pick them out) and a great stew. We got seated right away and treated very kindly by the staff as we shared it was our first time here. The place is bigger than it looks and has very spacious seating. I found this restaurant while heading to another place but decided to stop in. It seems to be new, as everything looks fresh and well-kept. Compared to New York, the long dining area feels spacious, yet cozy due to smart interior design. We ordered a mix of shared and individual dishes, all delicious. Standouts are the 설렁탕 (Seolleongtang), a beef bone soup that literally warmed my soul, and the 갈비찜 (Galbi-jjim), delicious braised short ribs. This place is hands down one of my favorite spots for braised beef short ribs in NJ. It's part of a franchise with Olle in NYC, but this location is the 원조 (original), so the portions are bigger. The side menu is absolutely delicious, and the atmosphere here is much cozier and more casual than Olle, which feels a bit more high-end. This is my second visit, and I'm so glad I came back because I don't think I'll find anything like this in NJ or NYC. The prices are reasonable for the huge portions. The Korean dessert, "the rice and vegetables to mix with the leftover galbi jjim" were the perfect way to finish off the meal.
