After visiting Greece during the summer, we were hoping to recreate some of the amazing food experiences we had there. Pylos came up as a promising Greek restaurant with authentic cuisine and charm. We stopped in last weekend with an evening reservation. To start, we ordered the calamari which came out crispy, lemony, and with an amazing tomato cream sauce on the side. Definitely a great starter. For entrees, we shared a whole branzino and lamb shank. The lamb shank was so tender and came with these soft and seasoned potatoes on the side. The branzino was light, clean, and delicious as well. For dessert, ordered Christos' Towering Galaktobourekakia, which were these crispy squares filled with custard and drizzled with honey on top. 10 out of freaking 10. These were to die for. I would gladly return to Pylos in the future since the food was amazing and service was excellent. I recommend a reservation as this place filled up super faster after we were seated. read more

Ambiance is nice and food was decent but personally think it's overpriced & experience was lacking. During our arrival, there was one empty table next us and 7 empty ones on the other side of us. Moments later a couple arrived to be seated and the staff assigned them to the the table RIGHT NEXT TO US like within an arm's reach! I can understand if it was a busy night but it was pretty dead and I knew it wasn't going to fill up since it was 20 degrees outside and snowing, I think they were being too optimistic about people coming but staff should've been realistic and focus more on making sure the customers who are actually here get good service! It got really loud and we were irritated because there was no privacy. You know it's too close when I can barely hear my friend but can perfectly hear what the stranger next to me is saying. I had to ask the waiter TWO times (who had to consult with someone) before she agreed to move us to a further table! NYC is a crowded place as it is...Does anyone really want to pay $100+ for food just to be packed like sardines?! Came Sunday for a 6pm reservation. Wasn't very crowded so didn't have any issue with being too close to fellow diners. The space is lovely. However saw the other reviews with it being too tight. Folks, it's NYC. In the Village, so yes tables are close. Anyway, service was great. Waiter from Athens. He was very helpful in discussing the menu and also speaking Greek with my husband. We had the horiatiki salad which was perfect for two. Super crisp and light dressing, feta was amazing. We then had a lamb shank over baby veggies and "Greek lasagna" patitsio. Both entrees were incredible. Plentiful and huge flavor. Lastly, very hot pita bread with home made hummus was excellent. Split a bottle of Rose and was actually impressed with wine selection! This is a great dining option in the east village. It's classy, beautifully decorated with a great dining menu and a wine list. I called the day before to make a reservation for 3 without any issues. We were seated inside and felt well separated from the other patrons. The seats were comfortable. The ambiance was perfect with dim lighting. I couldn't even remember if there was music playing in the background as I could hear and enjoy my friends' company. We started out with a bottle of red that our waiter chose for us after hearing what we were thinking about for dinner. It paired well! I think it was the bottle of axis. We split the three dip that came with super warm pita bread. Like at Taboon, my favorite was the fish dip, then the eggplant. My friend for the scallop app which he really liked and the other got the lamb chops, which were so good! I'm usually not a fan of lamb but I think that is the dish to get here. I'll try the lamb shank next time! I ended up getting the shrimp and scallop over greek noodles which came in a delicious creamy sauce. What a hidden gem I found. I was craving greek food and this place was on my bookmark for a long time, so I decided to dine in with my friend. Beautiful, romantic with excellent service and food! We had the Arugula salad which was delicious and the dip with pita was a hit too! Warm pita and an outstanding hummus dip.. so good .. Entrees: moussaka and poached salmon. The salmon presentation was stunning but the moussaka tasted better IMO.. Dessert was a yogurt custard and was beautifully presented and light enough that we comfortably walked home afterwards.. The staff was polite and attentive and impressive with the water re fills and genuine interest in our experience which was appreciated .. The bathrooms were spotless even though most tables were filled! This is my mother's favorite Greek spot and I can see why.. Maybe covid maybe recent renovations maybe inflation but the prices have definitely gone up from those on the pictures here. Dinner with the shared app, shared dessert and no drinks came to $100.. After all these years this Greek spot is still riding high with fantastic food and outstanding, warm and professional service. The fried squid is light, tender and delectable. The dolmas were delicious and perfect to share as an appetizer. But the killer of the night were the baby lamb chops. The most delicious chops I've had in ages. The meat tasted like lamb, seasoned beautifully and cooked perfectly. And to my shock, as we left, the staff at the front desk actually asked us how we enjoyed our dinner. That never happens anymore. No one cares overall. But this old school restaurant cares and it shows! Great, chic atmosphere too. Perfect noise level and a great place to celebrate a special occasion or just grab a yummy meal. Went as a hungry party of 4 for a weekday dinner. My first time having Greek food outside of generic "mediterranean" places, and I'm happy to have found a place I can recommend to people. We ordered: - Horiatiki Salad - Grilled Octopus - Moussaka - Poached Salmon - Lamb Shanks with eggplants and potatoes Sharing those dishes among ourselves left us feeling comfortably full, although not stuffed. The salad showed me that this place uses quality ingredients. In particular the olive oil dressing really stood out to me. Recommend: My favorite was the Lamb Shanks. They were cooked to perfection, and the accompaniments (eggplants + potatoes) were excellent. I'd recommend this dish. I'd also recommend the Moussaka. It was akin to a lasagna, but with the content mainly filled with eggplants. (I don't even usually like eggplants, but these were just so good.) The salad was also a solid choice. Good amount of feta, and very nicely seasoned. I think it is enough amount to serve as an appetizer for maybe 3 - 4 people. Skip if on the edge: I may skip on the grilled octopus and the poached salmon next time I go. Both were good, but in my opinion not as impressive or unique as the other dishes in terms of flavor. Superb authentic Greek fare at a reasonable price. We had a large group (15) and we found challenging to book reservations at acclaimed restaurants (one wanted to charge us a $6,000 minimum!). For only $65, we were served two cold appetizers and four hot appetizers family style, followed by a choice of entrees and two desserts. Every item from start to finish was phenomenal, including Poikilia tzatziki, taramosalata, (lemony fish roe dip), and melitzanosalata, char-grilled eggplants and extra virgin Greek olive oil; and horiatiki; the classic Greek village salad, with fresh tomatoes, onions, cucumbers, capers, kalamata olives, and feta. Memorable hot appetizers included the kolokythakia kai melitzanakia tyganita (crisp, fried zucchini and eggplant), afrata keftedakia (light-as-air meatballs), marinated octopus with a balsamic reduction sauce and capers, and fresh artichoke heart moussaka, layered with caramelized onions, herbs, and three greek cheese béchamel sauce. Outstanding entrees include marinated grilled baby lamb chops served with fingerling potatoes and stuffed baby eggplant, and grilled whole branzino served with spanakorizo. The desserts were memorable: Christos's towering galaktobourekakia- delectable buttery phyllo triangles filled with Greek custard, and Greek yogurt served with sour cherry preserve, Greek honey, and walnuts. The wine list has features a solid variety of Greek wines, including Sigalas Assyrtiko, Gerovassiliou Malagouzia and Avaton, and Eratini Wishes dessert wine. The only minor negative is that several of the vintage years of the wines listed online had run out, and were replaced with those from other vintages. Pylos was a pleasant surprise! It is actually one of the best authentic upscale Greek restaurants in New York City but it is still under the radar. They have a very interesting selection of Greek dishes that you don't easily find in other restaurants in the city including pistachio in meat and fish dishes. This place feels like a find. It's unassuming on a side street on lower east side. But when you walk in it's transformed to Greece. They creatively display all of these clay pots in the ceiling. Despite the 25% capacity inside we tried to order 3 dishes and every time the answer was: we are out of that dish... Needless to say I really must have enjoyed the food to give this restaurant five stars anyways. The 3 dips as an appetizer were super fresh and delicious. The branzino was amazing and the side of roasted potatoes was also super flavorful.
