I used to go here for Tuesday Lady's Night ALL of the time. I still go now and again. Pros: No cover for ladies on Tuesdays CHEAP well drinks... Seriously. Best protocol for the Q on a Tuesday night: 1.) Hit coat check. There is NO room for your purse or bulky jacket on the dance floor, in the bathroom line, in the smoking area... ANYWHERE. And really, it's hot in there. Body heat people. You don't NEED that jacket. And really, if you are coming here on a Tuesday night... chances are you are a lesbian. Everyone knows lesbians don't need purses. Duh. Get a key chain and a cigarette case. Done. 2.) Hit the bar. Find your favorite bartender, or anyone who is available really. Be aggressive, but not a dick. Order two drinks. Both doubles. Slam one, take the other out to the smoking area. 3.) Hit the outside smoking area. Omit obviously if not a smoker. Because mother hates gays, I decided to make her mad and boogie my tooshie off in the gayest place I could find. And boy, let me tell you, I can see why she hates them... They are amazing! This place was so much fun, it's no wonder why she doesn't like them. Mother hates fun, she says it distracts her from Jesus, but I think she's an idiot, the filthy homebody! Anywho, the bartenders made our drinks STRONG. Any they were cheap too, only 5 dollars during happy hour! I danced the night away with men, women, stools, on top of tables, whatever. The only thing that struck me as odd were the well muscled men dancing on top of the tables. I can't decide if I love QBar or if I hate QBar. Today, my hangover from $1drink Monday is making me hate QBar. It is so much fun to go and dance, but I have never been without having a drink spilled on me or one of my friends. They pack people in so tight that you're bound to be spilled all over. Just when you think you've had it bad, it actually can get worse- my friend was vomited on once. It is like a trashy-wild-movie-dive bar with a glossed over cool bar vibe. The bar staff always seems irritated. I know that they're swamped, but they don't need to act like Seinfeld's Soup Nazi. Really. A bottle of Bud Light is $3.50. When I order beer, I don't tip the same as when I order drinks because all the bartender does is twist the lid off, and when it's $3.50 I just leave the change. On at least 3 occasions the bartender has shouted at me and told me that i "forgot my quarters" and that they "don't want them." One time, the bartenders even tossed the quarters back at me. THREE PEOPLE IN ONE NIGHT IN A TINY CASTRO CLUB! If you are a girl who owns an iphone DO NOT GO TO QBAR! I was dancing the whole night, it was pretty packed so I have absolutely no idea when someone would have stolen my phone. My bag was on my body, it did NOT have a zipper, but was latched shut (I thought). Some serious criminals prowl QBar obviously. Do you want to lose $1,000 in 10 minutes? Do you want to feel alone and exposed? Because that's how you will feel at 1am outside this DISGUSTING ESTABLISHMENT where thieves prey on people who are trying to enjoy their Friday night and get away from the work week. I've been here a few times, back in the day, when it was still Bar On Castro. It was a crazy swirling balmy room of drink, dance, debauchery then. Nice to see somethings haven't changed. On a Pride weekend Sunday, we walked over to Q Bar after an already-long morning/afternoon of celebrations (and drinking). At 4 in the afternoon, the room was already in a buzzing state of dranktitude (cheapest bar I've ever come across in Castro!) and jumping with dance energy thanks to a deejay that spun an engaging set of hip-hop and R&B (kind of a rarity here, from my few experiences). While in line to get in,w e got flashed some bubbies; not an uncommon occurrence. It kind of sets the precedence for what mood can be found/facilitated inside. After round number X of shots of Y, we swam through the crowd and took to the dancefloor. As ever, the narrow room starts to warm up pretty quickly, especially when people are busting moves (dance and non-dance related) all over the place. It gets downright hot. And also "hot". I got grooved up on while one the dancefloor, I tried to delicately deflect it, but was thankfully saved by a friend when she saw me floundering. I can't, for the life of me, remember what the decor or ambience is like in detail. I do remember there being soundboxes/stages opposite the bar where half-nekkid people dance and gyrate against each other once the music/mood/libations get to flowing. And the restroom situation is horrendous, barring details. It's just kind of yuck. When I was a smoker, the enclosed patio out front was a boon. It's also where I think I might have been picked up on, though I'm pretty oblivious to that kind of attention. I probably thought they were just being friendly. It's always been hazily-memorable and a good time when we've come out to this spot. UGH! I'm so torn between giving this 5 stars or 1 star. We'll start with why it should get five stars: Love love love the ENERGY 92.7 - esque music that's playing. I'm talking Britney remixes, Gaga remixes, dance party USA; just 100% awesome dance music. I'm not even much of a dancer, but you can't help but grind it up at Q Bar. The bartenders are hot (clearly gay), but not bitchy at all, which slightly surprised me. They are super friendly, make strong drinks, and are fast. I love all the black lights going on - I couldn't stop looking around. It definitely has a club feel, but there's an area where you can chill out, sit down, take a break, etc. **SMOKERS** - they have a complete separate area for smokers, kind of like at Vertigo. Why it should get 1 star: $2 cover? What? Make it no cover or $5. A $2 cover is just weird. My main complaint about this bar? The rude DJ. I go up to request a song as normal (David Guetta's Sexy Bitch), he doesn't see me, so I start waving my arms. He ignores me while texting on his phone. I finally yell, Hellllllo, and he annoying looks over at me and says "what do you want?" I say I want to request a song. He says no. I say Why? He says just because. Fine, no need to be a dick about it. He could've just answered me immediately and said something like "sorry hun, we don't take requests." That would've been fine. No need to be an asshole. PRO's Good location .... ya thats about it. CON's These are things you need to change and fast 1. The fog machine.... it's not 1995, unplug and throw it away! 2. Paint, why is everything black. Its already a hole does it have to be a black hole. All black clubs and red lights are so over, update, refresh. 3. Clean, clean, clean. Your place is dirty. When people talk about Q Bar the first thing everyone says, It's small and dirty. 4. Get rid of that smoking area!! Uhhhhh HELLO!!! that's your prime real estate and if you ever look at the flow pattern of the bar you've got 5 smokers in that area and 99% of everyone else huddled at the other end trying to get away from the smoke. Get rid of smoking and make that into more social space. 5. Upgrade you ventilation, it sucks. 6. Get table and patio service with a card reader. If I don't have to get up and fight my way to the bar I'll drink more and thus spend more. Q Bar could be a totally cool boutique bar. Give the Castro something fresh. read more

BOOM-BOOM-BOOM-BOOM-BOOM-BOOM-BOOM-BOOM.... Rhinestone-laden drag queens sachet by the bar, trying to create their own divalicious catwalks, their hips swishing impatiently... Wwooooooowwwwwwwwwwrrrrrrrrrrwwwwwwwwwwwwwoooooowww... Mellow moments interrupt the intense thumping of bass, of 144 bpm's...It's a fun scene, oodles of delicious people-watching, the occassional baby dyke or two sidles by, generally attached to at least one other, the even more occassional presumed-straight couple sacheting by, eager to sop up the vivacious energy of the Castro scene, yet eternally oblivious... I've only ever been here on weeknights, so I'm not sure what it's like on the weekend. It's a cool bar to come to just to chill and have a few drinks with friends. It's not overly loud & crazy, so you can actually carry on a conversation. It's kind of like Badlands' little brother....they have similar music, lighting, and of course video screens. Also, frequent 2-for-1 well drink specials. Bartenders are nice and prices are fair. Be warned though, it's cash only. I'm only giving it 3 stars but that's 3.5 stars in my head. I just can't give it 4 because that's my rating for Badlands. Q Bar, although a good spot, just isn't AS good as Badlands. read more

It's also one of the few remaining bars with a designated smoking area... although I think they should forsake the ashtrays who hang out in that area and open it up to make the bar less cramped.. it's definitely a bar looking for an identity... maybe someday we can wean it off of crack and it will find its potential read more

I liked this place better when it was Bar on Castro, but nonetheless, it's all good. Q Bar is a little more gritty, music is pretty decent, drinks are cheap, but the best part: it's all about dancing like nobody's watching! I was here a couple Saturdays ago right after yoga. No frills, no makeup, in yoga clothes and all (ha ha). That's how I roll baby. I was instantly reminded of how much I LOVE to dance. The crowd started out pretty tame on a Saturday night but by 10pm the place heated up with some of the best freestyle dancing I've ever seen in my life. For real. Made me wanna bust out my moves. Oh god. I stopped in here for the "Dollar Drinks Night." It was a Monday night and the club was packed. I figured I would be in for some fun. Boy was I wrong. The bar was hotter than hell, the music was awful, and it was full of grungy smelly dudes. How is not showering sexy? Its not people! Take a shower before you plan on socializing! Then the so called "Dollar Drinks". This was the first bar I stopped at, so I wasn't drunk or buzzed by any means (I say this because some people feel like there is less alcohol in their drinks when they've had a few.) I waited in line at the bar for about 10 mins... which felt like thirty. I ordered myself two Vodka crans... at this point I didn't want to wait for my second drink. I leave the bar area and find my friends. I start to drink my "vodka" cran... and instead I start to indulge in a delightful watered down cranberry juice. I saw the bartender fill my glass up with "Vodka." So the only thing I can think is they fill vodka bottles with water. I didnt even finish it. And that isn't normal for me. I want my two dollars back! And the the four dollars I left as a tip! That six bucks coulda gotten me a real "VODKA" drink somewhere else! read more

I love this place. It is definitely the spot in the castro. Nay sayers complain about the long lines and crowded dance floor, but that's just the price to pay for popularity. Until recently, I don't remember the lines being as long. I have to be honest, I liked it more when it was The Bar on Castro. But now the BOC on church sucks. So as Q Bar, it's doing just fine. Tuesdays are Ladies Night, and my favorite night to go, and even though ladies used to have free admission, and now must pay $2, I guess this can be overlooked. Drinks for ladies are 1/2 price on Tuesdays. I gave it 4 stars because even though it's been consistently good to me over the past years, there is definitely room for improvement. The bartenders are always nice to me, the bouncers are usually not the most chipper, and the 1 stall women's bathroom has got to change. I suppose it's no different than most bathrooms at Castro bars/clubs. Bottom line, if you love to dance and have love for the 'mo's, this is your place. It's not The Cafe, but you'll love your life when you're here. Another word to the wise and shameless, if you need to piss and are a girl, go across Castro street to the parking lot and pop a squat. I'm at this bar way too often! LOL Located in the middle of Castro. It's a smaller gay bar but great for dancing and hanging out with friends. There is a small smoking section if you need a little smoke break from all the dancing and chat with some friends ;) Mondays - $1 drinks are the best. Make sure to tip!! Much different crowd than any other night of the week. It gets extremely crowded and there is usually a line to get in so don't say I didn't warn you. Tuesdays - Ladies' night. 241 for ladies. I always LOVE the music they play on Ladies' night more than any other night. Wednesdays - I am not out much on Wednesday nights but Bootycall is a popular event that goes on each week. It is really known for their photo sessions in the backroom where you can take your picture with friends or by yourself. Thursdays - 241 drinks are always a good thing! Also a very fun night to come out! Fridays and Saturdays - Of course it's going to be busy because these are the weekend nights. Usually a small cover but worth it. Sundays - I usually work during the day on Sundays but I believe I have heard about beer busts and of course there are happy hours during the day / afternoon. I dont understand the gay bars/clubs in SF. THERE'S NO ROOM TO ACTUALLY DANCE. It bothers me. My co-worker and I went here last nite and we managed to beat this massive line we saw when we did leave. There's no real dance floor to speak of. It kind of is this tiny-ass room/unofficial in between space where people are kind of dancing around...? It's hard to explain. But I mean, I guess the people are generally nice? We didn't really talk to anyone. We didn't get drinks here either because the bar was too full and they bartenders kept going around us. I mean, $2 cover is alright, and the music was bad. I wouldn't mind coming here again to get the night started, but considering this is the first time I've been clubbing since January, this place, despite being way smaller, is MUCH better than stupid Badlands read more
