The place was recommended by a coach over a Concordia. My hopes for Texas style bbq didn't make the mark. For the round we gave the Pappa Q platter a try with samples of all the meats. Pulled chicken, pulled pork, sausages were on point. The wings had a good flavor but unfortunately were over cooked and were tough. The brisket, took lean and a little bit over cooked along with the burnt end that I was not able to tell with so much sauce covering it. The last was the reason ribs. I would have to say these were excellent, juicy tendor, they were fall off the bone, which as some perfectionist will say, not perfect where you slightly pull. MEAT YOUR QUOTA It's not Texas, Memphis, or the Carolinas, but as far as the people of Oak Park/River Forest are concerned, this is some seriously good barbecue. Having opened in spring 2016, this location (one of four) serves up loads of BBQ options in a warm rustic setting on Marion Street. 'Q' offers catering in addition to their restaurant, and in nicer weather they open up several tables outside. You walk in, queue up, place your order, get a number, yada yada you know the drill by now. Entrées are reasonably priced; I typically get the two meat combo for something like $16, which includes a pair of sides. Selection of meats is GREAT -- your choice of pulled pork/chicken, sliced turkey, smoked wings, or spicy sausage. For a slight upcharge, you can get rib tips, burnt ends, or brisket. I can attest to the fact that the Memphis wings (dry rub), burnt ends, and sliced brisket are wonderful. Pork's good too, but 'Q' has an ace up their sleeve: a triple threat of bbq sauces ranging from a sweet & rich full-bodied, to a tangy vinegar, to a delightfully spicy variant. Better still, they sell craft beer in cans, in addition to wine and an impressive assortment of specialty bottled pop (blue cream soda, anyone?) There's bread & butter pickles at a giant condiment station that's also loaded with to-go containers. Stock up on hand wipes, cuz you'll need em for the bevy of awesome side dishes, like: ÷ mexican style street corn. Better known as "esquites" or "elotes", this is roasted corn off the cob layered with mayo, butter, queso, chili powder, and lime. It's the shizz. ÷ baked beans. Flavorful without being runny, there's a great balance between the maple brown sugar and smoky aromas. They throw some burnt ends in here, too! ÷ mac 'n' cheese. Not the best in existence, but still pretty good. For some inexplicable reason, there's been crushed Cheez-Its atop mine the past few times. ÷ coleslaw, french fries (really good ones), hushpuppies, and mashed potatoes with brisket gravy round out the rest of the terrific sides. Spicy brussel sprouts are available for a small premium. Bread = 5 Circuses = 4 Similar to other bbq restaurants, you place your order at the counter, grab a number, they bring it out to you. Employees are pretty friendly and the dining room is usually well-kept. Their sweet tea is amazing! Well, I waited to post a review hoping that I could get this resolved even after Ian called me and promised that he would take care of it. Well here's what happened, I ordered take out on Thursday, April 11, 2024 around 6:15 pm ish. I got home 20 minutes later and ate some of it because it was just alright! Literally, two hours later all through the night I had bubble guts. I was so sick, I was up all and had a flight the very night morning where I needed to be at the airport at 7am. I barely made it to the airport but couldn't miss my flight! When I returned from my travel a week or so later, I walked into the restaurant and asked for a manager and was told that he would be in later in the week so I left and returned in a few days. I spoke with Nick who was extremely rude and aggressive. I maintained my composure and then he sent a message to the district manager Ian. I asked for Ian's number but Nick told me that he couldn't give it to me. Okay, fine! Ian did not call me for sometime and once we spoke he apologized and indicated that he would take care of it! After months with nothing done, here's my review! Q-BBQ is hit or miss! I usually enjoy the food but they're very inconsistent! The staff needs better training to deal with customers! I ordered the quarter slab ribs a la carte and was extremely underwhelmed. I got 3 tiny ribs which were mostly bone and extremely dry and chewy (almost like jerky). Together, they were about the size of a small disposable sauce container (see picture for scale). My order was also supposed to include 2 hush puppies, which they had unfortunately forgotten to pack. For $10, I was left feeling pretty disappointed and still hungry. I ended up having to order Thai food to supplement my dinner. I'm not sure if this is a post-COVID issue they are having. I rarely had problems with their food pre-pandemic, but for the last few times I've been here, food has been missing, portions have shrunk, or it's been over-cooked/dry. Fast courteous service and great food. I don't know how a BBQ place managed to make me one of the best Cobb salads I've ever had, but they did. I opted for the Southwestern ranch dressing which was flavorful with a little kick. We also ordered chicken tacos, bbq beef tacos, hush puppies and coleslaw. Awesome BBQ. This is number five in the Q-BBQ locations. They are very consistent across all locations. I had the Burnt Ends sandwich "Q-style" and substituted Bleu Cheese for the Mozzarella. They have changed the recipe for the Burnt Ends, and even though I was a huge fan before, this new change cemented my love for their Burnt Ends. Bigger, juicier, and so succulent. I also tried the ribs, which were excellent as always, and the Spicy Wings. Amazing! So big and juicy! I was also able to try the Spicy Sausage, which is also a new recipe. Again, amazing! It is even spicier now! The place has plenty of seating, and will have outside seating when Spring decides to show up. Staff was being trained, and they were all friendly and quick. I'm a longtime fan of the hushpuppies and the Sweet Q-BBQ sauce. During the pandemic, I've been getting my food to go. But, since things are opening up, I'm comfortable eating in. I have visited Q-BBQ many times. It's located in the heart of downtown Oak Park. The location is a fast food type restaurant with a really great design. It feels like a BBQ place when you walk in which I love. There are many sauces to try in the wonderful menu items. I have had ribs, brisket, and tacos at this place - all wonderful. I'm also a big fan of the Mac and cheese and the baked beans. I have never had to wait very long for an order. They also have indoor and outdoor seating. Brunch turned out to be top notch here! I've always loved Q BBQ, but I was finally moved to make a review after getting their brisket burnt ends breakfast hash. It's one of the best breakfast plates I've ever had. This dish alone makes me recommend this as one of the best places to get brunch in Oak Park. They also have a solid beer selection, and a really nice staff. Note: I recommend the regular hush puppies highly. I went back after a long time because of the tremendous parking headache in this area but the food is basically worth it! I had the 2 meat plate with pulled pork sliced turkey the sides were the baked beans and cornbread I also added a taste of the chopped Brisket thanks to Ronn who suggested it. The experience was a mixed bag of friendly customer service and mediocre selections of meat and great sides and sauces. The sliced brisket, turkey and burnt ends were served lukewarm. However, the ribs were hot due to ordering them "wet." The sides of hush puppies and Mexican corn were delicious and hot. The big old fashioned farm sink near the condiments was nice to wash up without using a water closet. Plenty of containers to sort out your leftovers and quite accessible near the soda fountain. Well damn... I really wanted to like this place. It's so cute and cozy and tucked into the adorable, marion street in Oak Park. I read some reviews that made me skeptical but alas I had to find out for myself.. bummer.... the food was not great. Service was excellent place was clean and nice atmosphere but that's where the love affair ends for me....sadly. I am a sucker for brisket anytime I try a new bbq place and who says no to mac and cheese?! So I went with a brisket sandwich and sides of corn bread and mac and cheese. When I ordered the mac the cashier made sure to mention it was topped with a cracker crust and that gave me the feels because I expected a buttery baked on cracker crust, yes please! To my disappointment what arrived instead was what tasted like velveeta mac and cheese topped with cheez it's, no joke.... cheez it's just crunched up and thrown on top?!!! The humanity!
