I had a great experience in this cinema, Kyle and Gabe, the managers of the cinema are the most dedicated, resourceful and helpful people from all the cinemas that I've been too in Manhattan. This is a beautiful indie theatre, and I recommend you go watch your anticipated movies in this theatre. I was delighted to see the absence of assigned seats. This wouldn't be my first choice for Jurassic Park, but the visual and audio quality for Conclave were top-notch. There's a well-chosen stash of indies and a few more prominent names, for example The Substance. I knew nothing of the movie I Love You Forever but from the description, I'm thrilled to see it's playing here; this 89-minute offering is the kind of film that was once abundant in Manhattan but now is too often relegated to forums like ShitFilm, The Streaming Service Exclusively For Phones. Only four stars due to sightlines, which wouldn't be ideal in a sold-out or close situation. Nonetheless, I'm glad to see an indie spot holding on, with a bit more shine than a couple of its remaining competitors. read more

The Quad is one of those New York City iconic places that exists for a very important purpose: to give independent and specialty films a place to exist and be seen by the masses. Without independent film houses like the Quad (and IFC, etc ...) most small budget and independent films might otherwise never be seen (unless they somehow find a live on streaming services), which would be a tremendous loss to the arts. Tonight we saw Sublet, a kind of gay romantic film (of sorts) crossed with a love letter to Tel Aviv. This Israeli film might otherwise have been overlooked without the Quad. Plus, many LGBTQ films find their place here. The theater itself has gone under a renovation and make over in the recent years. While it lacks the reclining seats and ability to chose your seat in advance like many others in the city, it has a great vibe. The seats are comfortable. The popcorn is always fresh. And the staff is always friendly. It's small and quaint and exactly what it should be. read more

Came here to see the premier of "Buffaloed." The place is very nice and had a nice vibe to it more than a mall type movie theater. It was upscale with a bar. Once in the theater, I found it more cozy/personal. After the screening, the lead actress and producer of the movie did a Q&A which was really nice as well. This is a well done, more upscale theater. read more

Stopped by since their new renovations and oh my gosh, is this a classy, beautiful place to see a movie. They did such an incredible job elevating this to an inviting, yet elegant place. Our favorite was the Quad Cafe, tucked covertly next to the cinema. Wow, what a relaxing spot. Order a tea and the Melt ice cream sandwich (the dark chocolate cookie with Joe's Coffee ice cream was incredible), and you have yourself such a soothing night. '70s music plays, no one bothers you while you sit in red leather seats. I'm going back. 5 Stars!!!!!! read more

Loved this little art house theater. We saw Drift. Heavy movie but my guess is that it will be academy and golden globe favorite. Only giving four stars because the seats are pretty uncomfortable I mean I guess we're all just so spoiled by the fancy mainstream theater recliner seats but these seats seemed really squished together. We hosted a kid birthday party here for our 7 year old twins and Quad did an amazing job. It was the perfect space for adults to hang in the lobby or the bar and still pop in and out of the kid movie as needed. Isabel and her crew were amazing hosts, handling 50 crazed kids with grace and providing everything we needed, including making the space look great and putting up pictures of the kids at the entrance. They allowed us to bring in pizza, snacks, and dessert and were flexible with all the planning and day-of items. We would love to have a party here again. read more

I first heard of Quad Cinema through one of my fave podcast "Happier in Hollywood". http://happierinhollywood.com/ They mentioned the luxury experience was a great life hack. And I love a good life hack plus the movies has always been an obsession. One snow day I saw they were the only theater playing "Faces Places"! If you haven't seen this feel good French documentary then you are missing out. It was empty in the theater at 2pm in the afternoon. There was even a cut out of Agnès Varda (director and half of the main characters in the movie) to pose with in the lobby. My weakness is eccentric seasoned ladies! And she's one of the best! And last night I couldn't help but sneak in a showing of "Liquid Sky" the perfect club kids alien orgasmic movie!! Stunning visually and the dialogue has some perfect one liners. I will be returning on Friday for the q and a with Michel Hazanavicius & Stacy Martin for "Godard Mon Amour". The theater has more intimate theaters within. The place looks super clean and funky. There's vintage movie posters along the wall with benches to sit while you wait for doors to open. This is the kinda place where too early means you have to wait. Yesterday we went in at 7:05 for a 7:15 movie. They have movies to buy and mugs. They also have popcorn and cookies available for purchase. My favorite thing about this place is they know what good older films to play and what's new and foreign. Some reviews have mentioned some issues but I have yet to see any of NY's furry friends. And this theater is so great that it has not deterred me from returning in any way. read more

I have not been to the Quad in over a decade and yesterday's showing of "Remember This" -The Jan Karski story magnificently portrayed by David Strathairn jumps from the Quad Cinema screen defining humanity. I was so impressed by the clean, modern look of the QUAD which has rekindled my interest in Art house movies. The Quad is truly a gem in the resurgence of NYC. I love the screen, acoustics and the sight-lines here. Bathrooms put the National chains to shame. read more

Another happy reunion thanks to MoviePass. I hadn't been here in years and it was both nice (and a tiny bit sad) to see the theater updated for the 21st century (mostly the lobby and facade, as the chairs are still old-school art-house seats, not the business-class recliners increasingly adoped by large chains like AMC). Their programming is excellent (including but not limited to the distribution of outstanding and interesting new Russian cinema). Buying tickets is a snap, as long as there's not a crazy lady in front of you demanding from staff a description of every movie currently playing prior to making her decision. And the theaters have that refreshingly intimate feel with smaller screens and good views anywhere you sit. Bathrooms are relatively clean, too! read more

What a different Quad Cinema this is from my long gone NYU days. I have such fond memories of hunkering down in the Quad for double features in the middle of the day as a temporary escape from the city. This new Quad cinema is updated, clean and well run! Heck, they even have a bar on site! The night I went, many people were having trouble with the moviepass app and the Quad staff were all so supportive. Quaint, but full of quality this theater is. Prices not so quaint but worth it because you're supporting the artists that release their films here. This place is a bit hidden on the street, so trying to find it was like hunting for treasure lol once you find it and walk in, the presentation of the lobby is quite lovely. There is a nice little room with a bar to catch a few drinks before the movie. There are only 4 movie rooms thus the "Quad" in this theater's name. When I was buying my ticket for Hearts Beat Loud, the cashier told me one of the rooms temporarily had no ac. I was hoping it wasn't my theater, and I was right. This pains me to write since I first went to the quad 40 years ago, but do NOT go to this theater if you want to watch the movie instead of the person's head in front of you. Whoever was in charge of this redesign should have whatever license they have taken away. Was told by someone who works there that there have been complaints since it reopened. AND there is no heat, has been none for at least the last four weeks when Iast went there in the afternoon with only a few people there. I read the reviews before we went and noticed a lot of them talked about the seating. The first thing I noticed was that the seat in front of me had a very high back. I'm 4'11" and it was almost too high for me to see over. If someone of a more "normal height" was in front of me I would have had a great view of the back of his head, as the seats were directly behind each other. Think: seats on a plane. Anyway, we where there for a Wednesday matinee and there were only 4 people in the audience, so it didn't affect me. But I wouldn't go back on a weekend for sure. The Quad is a theater that's always there for me in my time of need. Like when I needed to see that movie about euthanasia rights in The Netherlands to impress a boy I was dating, The Quad was there. When no one else wanted to go see Colma, The Musical with me, The Quad was there to keep me company. And when I thought I was the last person on earth who hadn't seen The Dark Night, The Quad knew it wasn't too late for me. The theaters/seats are a bit small and cramped, hence the loss of star, but its charm and selection of films more than makes up for it. And really, a movie theater in New York that costs less than $12 where you don't have to sit through 20 minutes of commercials before your movie is an easy Four Stars in my book. Thanks for being there for me, Quad! I'll gladly return the favor any day. read more

With the loss of Brooklyn Heights Cinema this year, I'm so happy to see Quad Cinema thriving. This wonderful art-house cinema is a sure bet for the money. Decent (while small) screens with both 35mm film and digital projections showcase the best in hard-to-find independent and foreign films. It's far superior to the Angelika (which, by the way, is a national chain), even with its small seats. Comfortable semi-raked seating rounds out the great experience of seeing a film here. If you care about 35mm film, call ahead to check and see if your film is presented in this format. It's up to YOU to make sure that places like this can survive the ever increasing rent of Manhattan and movie chains taking over. read more

I found this cinema to be lackluster. Multiple staff members were unprofessional (seemed like maybe they were unhappy or just not trained well). The theater itself was quite small, which didn't bother me too much. The uncomfortable part was the height of the screen- it's situated too high and strained my neck a bit. I went to the Quad Cinema a lot when I was a student at NYU and always had a fine time...mostly because I was seeing those indie movies where only four people show up, so the theater isn't crowded, no one is talking or checking their phone, and even though the seats are TOO small, there is plenty of personal space when no one else is there. BUT yesterday I went to see War Horse (which I loved), and it was an entirely different experience. Being the only theater still showing the Oscar nominated film, it was sold out...possibly oversold by the number of people who were still looking for seats AFTER the movie started. The seats really are too small when you are packed in like sardines, and since the theater attracts the 65+ audience who constantly say things like "Eh, what did they say? I can't hear," and "Oh, look, it's that actress...what's her name? You remember her from that movie...you know," it wasn't the ideal viewing experience. Sigh I'd go back, but not anytime soon. They do have good popcorn, which is important. But the rest rooms do not impress. read more

This review is all about PHYSICAL COMFORT and not artistic considerations. Having said that, for me, the newly renovated Quad has TWO MAJOR FLAWS: 1) The screens are too low. Everyone's heads, for at least 4 rows in front of me, were blocking the lower portion of the screen. Very annoying. Can you imagine how irritating this would be if you had to read subtitles?! Needless to say, about half of the films shown at the Quad are foreign and require the reading of subtitles!!! I also felt badly for the people sitting behind me since my husband and I are both more than 6 feet tall. 2) The air conditioning was blasting directly on us so strongly we had to keep our coats fully zipped and scarves wrapped tightly around our necks. Terrifically uncomfortable. It was not even a warm-weather evening. I didn't see why air conditioning was necessary. On the plus side of things: The new look of the place is lovely. The seats were very comfortable, though because of the low screen, I really couldn't take advantage of resting my head back or reclining. Very nice concession area and restroom renovations. Artistically, the Quad remains an important New York venue. They must have spent a fortune on the new place. It is very sad that these equally important considerations of physical comfort have been overlooked. read more

Yes they take Moviepass. Stumbled on this and the inside is slick and modern. They have a nice waiting area in the main lobby w ample treats and nice bathrooms. The screens arent big but that allows for a more intimate feel. It also lets you sit right up on that sceen if you like. Cool cool little bar adjoining and staff is super cool. Great films, cheap tickets, great schedule. The theaters are small. The very big problem here is that the seats are not properly raked at all. One seat directly behind another and no sharp incline to see above their head. Staggered seats would ameliorate this problem. I know they threw a lot of money into this, but they failed seating design 101. Sound okay, offerings wonderful. You just can't see it unless you stand in the back of the theater. read more

He screwed up the format (he left the image squeezed!) then had the brilliant idea to stop the film 5 minutes in. With a least 2 to 3 minutes passed, he then restarted the film and it was still squeezed!!!!! Captain Genius and his merry bunch of Mensa members really need to get their shit together. Boo!!! I came to hear about the Quad Cinema because they were recently hosting the premiere of Under the Boardwalk: The Monopoly Story. It sounded like a grand affair really since the film won at the Anaheim International Film Festival, and the director was going to be available for Q and A after the film. I felt so bad for the director, because this was the most run down movie theater I have ever seen. My girlfriend and I were the first ones to arrive. Upon entering the theater, I noticed that two rows of seats were covered. At first thought, I was thinking those seats were reserved for the director and makers of the film, like you see at the film festivals. As I got closer though, I realized it was something quite a bit different. Apparently the roof is leaking quite badly at this particular theater, and tarps were laid down to protect the seats and catch the accumulating rain water. Classy. Looking around the theater, it was hard to find a place to sit. There was trash everywhere! Apparently they don't bother to even clean the theater between screenings. The film projector was about as old as they come, and the seats were all at the same level. You would think they would use their best room for a film premiere. Think again. They supposedly were screening an indie movie that I really really really wanted to see, but the poster for the movie and the description of the move (of another movie with the same title) shown on their website did not match, so I called the theater and asked which one it was. I was assured it was the movie I wanted to see. Sooooo I go into the city and go to Quad Cinema to see the 5:20 pm show. This is where the fun begins. When I get to the box office, I am told that the projector isn't working. Ok, things happen. I ask if it is likely that it will be fixed in time for the next show because I came in from NJ to see this movie and I am told ....... the projector has been broken all day. WTH???? They couldn't have told me that when I called???? They waited until I made the trip from NJ to tell me the projector was broken instead of telling me when I freaking called and asked about the movie??? No apology, no here's a coupon for a free ticket or free popcorn, nothing. Since I already made the trip in solely to see this movie, I decided to hang out at Starbucks to see if the projector got fixed by the next show. Nope, and still nothing to make up for letting me make the trip for nothing and wasting 4 hours of my time. One of the handful of movie theaters left in NYC that shows real first-run indie movies (usually with a queer slant) and the tickets are still $10. Here's hoping it can stay that way for awhile! I saw my first Gregg Araki movie here, my first Zhang Yimou, my first Bruce LaBruce, and documentaries about everything from porn stars turned singers to the examination of homosexuality as it relates to the Bible I watched just this afternoon. Sure some jerks have bigger screens in their CPW penthouses, but: 1) I don't have a penthouse, 2) the staff here is always friendly, 3) the concessions feature fresh popcorn and Fizzy Lizzies, and 4) even the bad movies the show are usually at least worth your while. I am a sucker for theaters that show "artsy" films, and Quad Cinema never lets me down when I'm in the Village and longing to see a film with more subtitles than gratuitous explosions. The theaters are quite small, but in my estimation that only enhances the intimacy of most of the films that are shown here. Not much in promo for this gem theater, lucky the Voice had a write up & picture about this great '80's flick. Their snack bar needs help - alot of help - the only non-carbonated option was water, $3.50, ok, at least its Smart Water but at room temperature? Really?!? A cooler would be too much?
