FYI: To get a spot on the rooftop for 6:30, I had to make a reservation about three weeks before. I love supporting a downtown restaurant! First of all, all the people that worked there were awesome- there's a great vibe at this place. The drinks sound and looked pretty good, but I don't drink. I did order a very nice non-alcoholic drink (7 bucks though??) The food....well, it was good, but it is definitely a little too pricey for what you get. For the small plates, we ordered the hummus, which was fine, the beet tartar, which was also good, but very small, and the cauliflower, which was tasty but way overpriced. We also ordered the burger, which was....a burger, and the special that night was a quail (I didn't realize how tiny quail is!). All in all, we enjoyed the evening and the restaurant. I would definitely recommend checking it out at least once, but we probably won't go back until they expand their menu and maybe make the portions a bit larger. read more

The elevator entrance gives this place anticipation to an exclusive experience. Once inside, you realize this has become an attractive place solely for their aesthetic and being deemed a "rooftop bar", the only one in Fresno. However, being that this is on the second floor and there being no view, rooftop isn't an accurate description. Maybe garage roof would be more accurate since they are relying on technicalities . Especially since you see the building tower over you at your table (if you made the reservation for roof top seating). Not only are there no misters to combat the heat, but the anticipation of the ambience is dismissed with the realization, this place is only gate kept because it is for those who will not leave Fresno to experience a true rooftop bar. This is a place for people who like to take picture of their food and build up a life for themselves in images than experience something incredible. No one at the tables is truly talking rather than telling their party to pose for a picture or "influencer" post. If I were to ever return, I think the indoor bar might be a better option. Presentation is what they rely on (aesthetics). The drinks are beautiful but oh so small. The food was decent but again for the price, at least be mind blowing in flavor or better presentation. The quail egg burger medium rare was melt-in-your-mouth tasty with both flavor and texture. I really enjoyed it! The olive oil Choco cake was not overly sweet, it was just a tad small of a portion but I loved the glaze on it- had an espresso note to it. I've been eyeing this place for a while on Yelp. Thanks Covid for the delay. I will say they are doing a wonderful job adapting to the Covid craziness. We sat on their street level patio. The rooftop bar it typically is, although it's only the 2nd level of a 14 story building ‍, is not open at the moment. Hopefully that changes because the pictures look beautiful! Our service was great. The cocktails are very pretty. They are also very strong. I was a bit disappointed in the cocktail selection since this is supposed to be their specialty. I'm a rum and Tequila girl but there's not enough to select from. The lack of options also runs into their food selection as well. I had actually just came from appetizers and drinks and a different place and was a little put off by the limited selections. This may be due to the pandemic but if so I don't understand why. On to the food! Our table had a Quail egg Burger, Salmon, The Citrus Chicken, and I opted for the Cauliflower appetizer and added the Salmon. I was told the burger was good as well as the salmon. Good but not knock your socks off. The cauliflower was delicious. It's a steak so cut it up and mix it with the sauce and crispy herbs it comes with.... YUM!! The undeniable star of the show was the chicken. My husband ordered it and I literally wanted to steal it. For the price the plate was worth the cost. I think it's the best chicken I've ever had in my entire life. SO tender and flavorful! I don't know how they pack all that flavor into the chicken but it's and hands down MUST TRY! Our service was great. Our servers were attentive and prompt. They bring food from across the street and drinks from the bar on the second floor but the wait was tolerable and understandable. I really enjoyed the atmosphere. I loved the blankets. They have a 90 minute table time so at the 90 minute mark you're told your reservation is coming to an end. While the patio is just two stories up, I actually think that makes it a better ambiance than if it was at the top of the building. Here, you are both above and surrounded by downtown Fresno buildings, making it really feel like you are in the middle of a big city. The actual seating, lighting, and aesthetics are wonderful. All in all, this is probably the best dining/drinking ambiance in Fresno. Service: Wonderful. Super friendly and knowledgeable server and host. Food and drinks came out extremely quickly and exactly as ordered. All in all, top notch! Food: Really, really good, I just want to see more of it. The burger was delicious, and the accompanying potatoes and spicy ketchup were super yummy. The summer squash appetizer was maybe a bit small but otherwise really tasty. I'm surprised they make a point of saying "we have a small menu because we aren't a restaurant," because I really think their food is a huge strength they should play up more! Cocktails: Good, but just good. We came directly from that other fancy downtown cocktail bar where we had a few drinks first, and the cocktails at Quail State were noticeably less tasty (mostly because the ingredients seemed to not balance as well or harmonize as well). The day has arrived and I'm pretty excited to check this place out with great company. Upon arrival, a nice worker directs you up the elevator with good day wishes. Arrived. Really nice restaurant! My date set up a reservation at the rooftop. Very nice! Tables set up there with cactus everywhere. They only serve brunch foods until the dinner menu at 5pm. Waters brought to start. From there, drinks offered. My date ordered the bottomless Mimosa and the waitress offered me to try to sample. Happily did and it was great. Ordered it. From there, my date ordered the Cheese Board and chicken Caprese Sandwich. Out on the rooftop is very nice. You hear trains and it's quaint. The waitress was great! Checked on us frequently. I called ahead and the person on the phone was very informative and recommended making a reservation because first come first serve time can be unpredictable. We made a reservation and we're a little early but they were able to seat us. There is a 90min seating window. They make it a point to mention they are a bar and not a restaurant, so the food menu is not huge. We tried the hummus, truffle purple potato, black garlic Cesar salad & the spiced chicken. We had three options so we went with that, and a few non alcoholic drinks. The drinks were great, but the food was basic. I think this is a more bar centered restaurant. I checked out Quail State since it is advertised as Fresno's ONLY rooftop bar and to support the downtown area. I gotta say it was super underwhelming. Our drinks were okay. 6.5/10. It probably wouldn't be fair to say I was disappointed or let down, but I was realllly hoping to try that wagyu burger when I came in for my reservation on Saturday evening. Unfortunately, they aren't serving dinner entrees anymore, or at least that's what the waiter said. Burgers are only available on Monday nights, apparently. The only food items available on the menu were appetizers. To begin with, we were seated, but not greeted by anyone at the table. There are placards where you have to scan a QR code to see a menu, and to order through the online website. It felt awkward because some people didn't bring a phone, and also everyone's order went through one checkout cart. So we couldn't pay separately. The only time someone came to our table was to drop off food. Even though we ordered 5 appetizers, only 2 napkins and sets of utensils were brought to the table. So the process of ordering food felt uninviting and awkward, and even though it wasn't very busy, the 2 workers were mostly preoccupied in the kitchen. The appetizers also were just okay. The meat board consisted of a few slices of 3 charcuterie meat options, some mini pickles, and some square mini slices of bread. It didn't have an appeal of something you would expect at a nice rooftop bar. The poki appetizer was a little bit better, and the tuna veggie app was okay. They reminded me of a similar appetizer from a place like Cheesecake factory. So were the appetizers worth it? Not to me. The drinks, decor, and overall atmosphere were the best parts of the bar. Those are also the most important aspects, and why I would go back. Each of the drinks I tried had good flavor and balance to them. The bar had a good selection of classic cocktails and their own creations. The place was pretty, and the rooftop bar has a nice novel feel to it. I've been to Quail State twice, and am finally leaving a review. The atmosphere is so unique. I love that you get to take an elevator up, and I love the way that they've decorated the place. The lights are cute, especially at night, and everyone that works there is super friendly. I believe they only have one cook, so the food does take a while to come out! We just ended up feeling abandoned, we were told to order through the app which was convenient and great but that meant no one was coming to check on us. We did spot a pest which made us second guess about ordering food but their kitchen is closed for 6-8 months for remodeling we were told... My friends liked this spot so decided to take me on Sunday night. We made reservations and had to wait a bit before being seated because they were packed. Camille was our server and greated us shortly after being seated. My girfriend and I ordered a Rhubarb Drag Race, which was tastey but very small and for the price decided we didnt want another one. For starters we had the hummus, which was basic. We decided to order 3 main dishes and share them; Salmon, Pork Chop and Wagyu Burger. The food came out at a reasonable time and was hot. All three dishes were very good, with the salmon as my favorite. We had some drinks and shared a Pumpkin Rum Cake which was pretty good. Overall it was a nice dining experience, but a bit overpriced in my opinion. Our bill was $265 for 3 people that included a 3% kitchen fee. The inside is not an inviting space to relax. The service was atrocious. The female bartender acted as if she had never been asked a question in her life. We asked about the building and her response was "I don't know I just work here", really!? She acted as if it was annoying that we were even there. We were in the middle of a conversation and she took a phone call from her cell phone and walked away. Made a reservation for the outside rooftop but was told it was very hot with no shade (understandable in Fresno in summer, but maybe their rooftop should have shade/umbrellas for brunch options). The food was mediocre at best and extremely overpriced for what was served - I had a quiche and my husband had the mushroom toast. The drink menu for brunch apparently has only 4 options. My husband asked for the whiskey list and the not so friendly bartender stated we could only order off the brunch bar menu of 4 drinks. Not because their food was particularly that good (it's always been pretty mediocre and overpriced), but because the setting is nice and contemporary and if you live in Fresno you know that these kinda places are few and far between. If you're considering going for brunch, don't even bother. They just don't care - they're not even trying. They just want to sell you overpriced mimosas and alcoholic cocktails so that they can make more money. Why even bother offering a brunch service? You'll be lucky if they have all the food on the menu available. One of the times I was there, the waitress ruled out one of my choices because they were out of eggs. EGGS! ‍ And for the prices they charge, I would expect bigger portions and higher quality ingredients. The quality of the bread was just awful. Cheap, white, tasted like cardboard. And get this: they don't even have COFFEE. First time coming here. It was pretty empty and we were able to sit anywhere inside. Outdoor/rooftop seating was unavailable. Had to book in advance for that. Inside decor was beautiful! It gave a very chic, modern, urban, "in the city" vibe which I really appreciate. Server was nice alright it took him awhile to come to our table and take our drinks. The reason this place is not a 5 star is because of the horrible wait time to get our drinks. It took a noticeable long time for the bartender to make our drinks and for a place that is mainly a bar (not really a restaurant), I was shocked at how slow the bartender was. The wait was so long it really did impact my experience there. We didn't even get water right away nor our drinks. So, my friends and I were just sitting thirsty for a food amount of time. I think we were only able to get two rounds of drinks before their "final call". The reason I'm giving this a 4 star and not lower is strictly for our respectful server who kept apologizing for the wait time and checked up on us regularly. The drinks also fast really good. My husband and I work downtown, and we love any new business coming in, but we were extra excited for this place to open! They suggest you make a reservation on Resy and I would suggest the same. The rooftop reservations book far in advance. I scheduled my reservation on Friday, June 4th about a month prior. They set up reservations online for a 30-day window. Every night at midnight the next day opens in the 30-day window. All tables that are listed as "inside" are inside their bar and dining area right next to the rooftop. The tables listed as "rooftop" are located on the rooftop deck. I noticed the inside reservations do not book as fast as the rooftop and although the inside is very cute with a fun loft style, I would suggest the rooftop if possible. Once we walked up to the location, the security guard will ask if you have a reservation. You will then be guided to the elevator on the 2nd floor. The hostess will check you in and there may be a mini line forming outside the restaurant. Our table was not quite ready, but they allowed us to sit at the bar and have a drink. I ordered the Goodbye Kiss, and it was delicious! It is super light and not too sweet. But I would definitely suggest the Aloe You A Lot. This was my favorite drink!! It just tasted fresh and deliciously paired beautifully with the wind outside. There were not too many food options. I take that back, there was a good array of options, but not for my carnivore husband. Mostly veggie options were on the menu. We stuck with the hummus appetizer, and it paired great with the drinks. The patio is beautiful!!! There are lights surrounding the deck and large cactus plants around the perimeter. The flowers on the cactus' bloom every night. How stinkin cool is that! We came here for a friends birthday on Wednesday night. I made the reservations a month in advance which you have to do if you want to get patio seating. I have to say I wasn't impressed with the patio it really is just a deck with some lights. It was windy , hot wind that is. Our waiter greeted us and let us know right away that we only had 90 minutes so if we want to put our food order to do it quickly. I wasn't aware of the 90 minute time frame maybe it's stated that on the reservations but I wasn't sure. However this kind of stressed me out a little bit since the birthday girl was late. We ordered a couple drinks while we waited and during that time at the menus kept blowing everywhere so you have to make sure they're secure under some thing. I feel like they should have one of those QR code menus instead of paper menus on a windy deck. I ordered the Surfer on Acid which wasn't that great. It had a weird after taste. My friends drink was much better which was the Good Bye Kiss (I do recommend this drink) . Ok I'll get to the Important part which is food . I'm not saying the food was bad but it wasn't much to brag about. I ordered the Butter Lettuce Salad and it was soggy, bland and it only came with a few Strawberries. I did order it without the Almonds but it just wasn't good. I can't stand soggy lettuce! We also ordered the Califlower A La Plancha which was ok. I think the best thing I ate was the Asparagus! Now that had a really good flavor to it! The Hummus was good however it came with a cold tortilla cut into triangles. The table was really small and everything came on separate plates so there was no room especially because no one was coming to take our empty plates on top of the menus flying everywhere lol. Had been wanting to try this for a while. Sadly, was rather disappointed. Went with a friend on a Thursday while Art Hop was going on. 1) You really should have a reservation to be here but that's not really evident online or here. 2) it's smaller and a little less pulled together than many of the pics online reflect, which was sort of surprising. Really became a big deal given we were seated right in front of a small mobile speaker that was blasting for the majority of the indoor space making it just uncomfortable to be by and not so great for a looming migraine. 3) despite arriving well before the crowd and being one of less than 4 parties seated indoors initially, we waited a SUBSTANTIAL period of time to be waited on, watching servers and hosts go back and forth repeatedly. Still not sure we would have been if I hadn't caught one of the servers to ask if she had a sense for when someone would be by to wait on us. She seemed a bit lost but kindly came back and took our order and waited on us for the duration. She said she was new and without being explicit that she was overwhelmed. She seemed to not have both direction or assistance. Sadly the place was still only about a quarter full at that point and would only become more hectic the longer we were there. She however did her best and we did appreciate that despite things just taking longer than one might expect. Case in point... 4) we placed a drink order with our meal order and didn't receive said drinks until midway through our meal. The meal that came out lukewarm. The drinks were good. But the food left some to be desired. Pictured is my meal. Would get the sandwich again. WOULD NOT recommend the potato side. Their million layer potato's where just a great example of why restaurants of any sort need to not be following TikTok or Insta food trends as a means for menu crafting. This wasn't tasty at all. A little too drenched in oil/fat, and void of flavor. And not warm enough for service. Not worth the calories and cholesterol. You can also see the side salad in the background that my friend had with her harissa chicken (not pictured) which she said was also served too cold. Overall, I expected more. Way more. The two stars are for the solid drinks, (even though they were out of popular choices BEFORE the crowd arrived)...HOW idk, was it made ahead in bulk?! Kinda made me wonder about the whole craft drink focus IF its pre made.... But I digress. The drinks we DID get were solid. And the server kept the water coming which was great for parched and headachy customers who waited forever for service in the first place. She was also very kind and we could see she was doing her best in what appeared to be a fairly autonomous environment for a server. IDK if we'd go back, perhaps for the beverages with no plans of ordering the food. We'll see. I wish this was a better experience but overall surprised to be way less impressed than expected. I have been meaning to add a review for awhile. The last time I went to Quail State was on Mother's Day for their brunch. This was apparently during a time when they decided to slim down their food menu and not serve people. They were promoting only drinks at the bar. The owner Josh was such a jerk. He actually made my mom cry on Mother's Day. I'll never forget that jerk. They also added an extra charge to our tab. He said it was for the tip. I told him we had a small party. He said that this was their new practice. It was obvious he was implementing some shady business practices. It looks like Josh is no longer the owner, and who knows if he still lives in Fresno, but what a jerk. Seemed like he thought he was better than his customers. The two business owners definitely swindled Fresno and probably took the money and ran. Shady af. read more

Reviewing strictly on service, atmosphere and cocktails! Wow, what a treasure. From the security at the door, and hostess stand, to our server we felt welcomed immediately. Everyone was warm and attentive. Our server was quick with water refills and very helpful with explaining their super unique and exciting compass for drinks that leaves your cocktail in the hands of their talented bartenders with a few helpful ideas from you (like alcohol preference, and flavor profile or if you want a kick in the pants spirit forward drink, or more tame and relaxed... so fun!). The drinks we tried were not only photogenic, but delicious and boozy (that's how we ordered them!). I love the flavor combos on their pre-existing menu and the combinations that were created specific from a few helpful ideas from my palate. The ambiance is very nice! It was smaller inside than I had expected, but I love the flow of the space and the distance between tables kept us from feeling crowded and claustrophobic. Decor is intentional and unique, without a detail missed. Highly recommend them for a cocktail night or any other time you're looking for a great drink in a nice setting. read more

Y'all, the mixologists here know what they're doing. Some are claiming a fail state, but to me this is a welcome rebirth of creativity in the cocktail menu. If you haven't been in awhile, or have yet to go back since the new management took over, do yourself a favor and go check it out, you'll be glad you did as I believe there is a lot more thought being put into the drinks than what I experienced pre-management transfer. read more
