I rarely do reviews but felt this must be said. I stopped by yesterday afternoon for a to-go plate as I was in the area and sadly, after spending $45 to try a variety - I threw the ENTIRE meal away! - Atmosphere wasn't the cleanest - Food presentation subpar - but I'm thinking "hey" so are most soul food joints and they're usually the best - right? The largest red flag should have been that NONE of the employees I saw had "soul" flobw (... and no shade). I would think the same if you saw ME in a Mexican or Indian restaurant as we go for that "authentic" cuisine. The employees could barely speak English but I got a large plate with baked chicken, smothered pork chop with 3 sides and a side order of oxtails. Food served cafeteria style - still ok for a soul food joint / HOWEVER upon ONE bite, I could tell the food was not fresh and had the aftertaste of being in that container for more than a day - did I mention also no seasoning? I mean everything tasted as if it was in leftover phase - and not just yesterday's - and lacked enough proper seasoning to masquerade the back taste. After trying 1-2 bites of each meat and side, I threw it ALL away bc I really feared getting sick as that after taste only got stronger. If I was closer, I would've returned with everything to request a refund - but I feel it's necessary to say "please do better". When you trust your name / food / reputation to employees, make sure it's done right. I mean this wasn't even to the standard of that one cousin at Thanksgiving who knows she can't cook - but keeps bringing a dish that she's now insulted nobody will eat!! $45 wasted and still had to cook after an already long day. read more

Social distancing and masks are required. This was our first time here, and we're glad we ordered for dinner. The employees are really attentive, friendly and quick once you place your orders. I ordered Mac and cheese, collard greens, and Turkey wing. My son ordered fried tilapia and the same sides I had. My husband ordered bourbon chicken, yellow rice and green beans. The food was pretty good, but my husband thought the bourbon chicken was chopped chicken. But it was 2 legs. He's glad he ordered a pork chop. He said it was seasoned well. The greens were kind of sweet, so I put hot sauce on them. The Mac and cheese was really delicious. We also ordered two pieces of cake, and they were really huge. I'm not a sweets person, but I tasted both of them and they were delicious. I will definitely be back, but I will choose another entree and so will my husband. My son loved the fish. I tried to make it work but this meal just kept getting worse & worse. Okra was soggy so I popped it in my air fryer at home to make it how I like. Not their fault necessarily so ignored it. But then I opened my whiting...I'm not a big meat eater (barely pescatarian) so I always open up meats before eating them. Luckily I did because the whiting was raw. I called and best the manager could do was give me a free whiting when I come back (I won't be). Next is dessert. I'm a dessert lover so even if this cake tasted like a box mix I'd eat it- however, it tasted like cleaning liquid was dropped into the mix. Couldn't even be chewed or swallowed. The sides weren't bad though which is why I didn't give it 1 star. I like that they don't have meat in them but I'm 100% sure based on taste they are "seasoned" by cooking in meat (either actual meat or stock/broth). Fine with me, but for a serious vegetarian/vegan this place isn't worth it ruining your streak. read more

Went with my senior citizen father, he asked a lady about stew beef & she said yes they do but they didn't. I think it was a mistake because of a language barrier & that's totally understandable. The issue was the lady beside her, my father let her know why he thought they had the beef. The issue is her response, "I have stew beef at home in my freezer". What kind of professionalism is that? I've been on the hunt for great soul food and several people recommended Queens so I checked them out. The best thing I ate was the cabbage, cornbread and peach punch. I really enjoyed those things. Yams taste like cane sugar and nothing else. The chicken...it was a big no! The two gentlemen assisting customers were pleasant. I wanted it to be great but it wasn't. I'm sad to say that Queen's has gone downhill, both in food quality and service. I think it's because the owner, Mr. Tony, isn't around anymore. At least, that's what I was told during my last visit. And because he doesn't come in, it's reflecting poorly in service and the food. This was my first visit in a long while. And while my last visit was so-so, at least the food was still good. I can't say the same this time. To be clear, the guy who made my order today was very nice. I ordered my usual oxtail with yellow rice, cabbage, and mac & cheese. More on that in a moment. The girl at the register, however, should either not work face-to-face with customers or find something more suitable altogether. She didn't greet me at all, and when she went to ring me up, she was on her phone on a call. I thought she was asking me what I ordered. Nope; she was on a personal call. When she finally did speak to me, she wasn't rude, but she certainly wasn't pleasant either. She made it seem like I was bothering her. I try to give people the benefit of the doubt and chalk it up to having a bad day, especially having worked face-to-face with customers before. Her demeanor was off-putting and leaves a lot to be desired. It made me miss the original ladies who worked there years ago when Queen's first opened. As for my food, it wasn't nearly as good as it used to be. The oxtail gravy spilled all over the bottom of the bag. I wish they wrapped the container in plastic wrap before bagging to prevent it from spilling. So my oxtail was dry and not as flavorful as a result. The cabbage was just okay. The yellow rice tasted off, like it was leftover from a couple of days ago or something. And the mac & cheese wasn't good either; it was cheesy on top but not throughout, and yet it was bland at the same time. At least the cornbread was good; still cake-like. This will likely be my last visit to Queen's, unless I catch word Mr.Tony is back and more involved. There are much better places to get oxtail in Charlotte, which is a shame. Before, I'd easily place Queen's as one of the top places to get your oxtail fix, even above some of the Caribbean/Jamaican restaurants. I hope they also get their service together because if she can't be bothered dealing with customers, she doesn't need to be interacting with the public. read more

Wanted to try something different while I was in Charlotte. It's located in a plaza, so there is plenty of parking. I thought the restaurant was clean and orders were to-go due to COVID. They have a pretty large selection of options to choose from and a whole cake menu to choose from. I opted for the veggie plate and my partner got the 2 meats and sides, which come with a bread of choice and drink. The staff were friendly and the food looked pretty good. I thought they sweet potatoes were very good but unfortunately, we were let down by the overall flavor of the meals. We came across this restaurant by accident and the sign outside intrigued me. So we decided to have lunch here. We ordered the small lunch: 1 meat, 2 sides, bread or a roll and a drink. Large was 2 meats, 3 sides etc. The small lunch cost $9.50 and the large lunch costs: $12.99 Dishes included varieties of chicken, pork, fried fish choices and a multitude of sides to includes lots of vegetable dishes as well as their famous mac and cheese. The every day daily special was oxtail. I ordered bbq chicken, lima beans and coleslaw. My dining mate ordered jerk chicken, cooked cabbage and lima beans. We both got the cornbread. We choose water as our beverage but tea, lemonade and soda available. The menu also features cake, cobbler, pudding and pie for dessert. A friendly lady dished out our choices which we brought to the table. Portions were good, served on melamine type plates with flat ware. Just homestyle cooking. All very good but nothing extraordinary with what we ordered. Our chicken was moist and tasty, as were our sides. The cornbread was moist very unnatural yellow and I think they must add either an egg shade food color to the recipe or use a commercial mix. The restaurant was clean but needs a brighter upgrade. The customer service was less than stellar but nevertheless, we were hungry. We got our food, sat down, and after the first few bites we realized it was more than worth it! Now I go all the time! I was looking for a after church sunday place to eat before I headed home for my after church nap. We were going to head to snooze, but I mean this place was right there. We popped in and there was one couple with their children there. The Game was playing on the screen. It seems like everyone gets their food to go, but that is literally how they are set up. With this kind of set up I am just not that confident in the fresheness of the food especially if people are coming in and out like a revolving door. I ordered the bourbon chicken, greens and mac and cheese. I wanted some okra, but that definitely needs to be cooked to order before I would buy it. Angel forgot my cornbread but he brought it to me for the last bit of my greens. The cornbread was truly the highlight. It was light, fluffy, buttery. I would stop over just for the cornbread real talk. The staff was really nice and I would try them again. Service is on point, however, their oxtails are garbage. They are dry and has no flavor at all. The yams and cornbread off the hook and the okra. However, someone needs to red the oxtails.
