Epic fail: Shouldn't a car wash conveyor push your car through the wash until it pushes your car out the other end? Well if you think that, you might be wrong. Sometimes there is no happy ending. Read on... I went for a car wash at the Lucky Duck Sandy location Saturday Morning (2019-10-26 at about 9:30 am). After the sturm and drang of the washing process, and at the end of the car wash conveyor line, someone apparently forgot to flip a roller plate of some kind to the "down" position, so it was "up" and created an obstacle. This unhappy condition made it so the conveyor could not push cars out the end of the car wash. Maybe there should have been a switch to shut down the wash or an indicator panel light to show this condition, but there apparently was not. The lady in front of me did not know what to do, so there she sat. Naturally, the conveyor pushed my car into hers several times, bumper to bumper. There was nothing I could do. Very unsettling. Finally, the she gunned her engine and was able to drive over the obstacle. I had to do the same to exit because the conveyor rollers did not have enough force on their own to do the job. Anyone who has ever gone through a similar car wash knows this is not the expected behavior. After getting out, I pulled along side the lady's vehicle and we compared damage. Thankfully, our 5mph bumpers matched up well and did their jobs. We found no damage. So, I walked over to the end of the conveyor and saw what the problem seemed to be, then ran to the front and suggested the car wash guys (teenage trainees?) quit sending people through until they fixed the problem. They kept sending them, however, until all the cars that were lined up had paid and were sent along. That must be their prime directive. Car and driver well-being be damned. I then ran back to the car wash exit and yelled at people to gun their engines so they could get over the bump. That created a lot of confused looks, but got people out of the way before the next car came along. Finally, the car wash guy came around and I pointed out what I thought was the problem. He flipped the plate over. Problem solved. What came next was weird. The guy told me it was the lady's fault for not pulling forward and getting out of the way. There was a sign, after all, that says to pull forward. Wow. After awhile of trying to explain that the world does not work that way, I gave up trying to be nice, and told him he was nuts, that the car wash has a design defect, and that blaming the customer was a bad move. This did not sink in at all. So, I filled out a complaint and left it with him. Since the conveyor problem had been solved, I then went through the wash again and was on my way. The rinse could have been better, and the right side of the car didn't get too clean, but hey, it's a washing machine, and what to you expect? Then it got weirder. This morning, I got a phone call from the Sandy location's general manager who blamed the lady again. Wow, just wow! When I reiterated what I thought, he said he was sorry I felt that way, but she should have pulled forward. Again, just wow. I guess I'm at fault for making him feel sorry. Maybe they'll change their sign to say "Gun Your Engine, and Pull Forward". Anyhoo, I kept asking the GM to speak to his boss, but after going the rounds, all I got was the customer service phone number. Calling that got me nowhere.
