If you have food allergies...beware!! I explained to the young woman taking our order that I had some food allergies. I have celiac and I have a dairy allergy. She recommended an item on the menu. She said it is gluten-free and dairy free. When I finally received this item and cut into it....cheese oozed out of it. I politely went to the counter and asked her if she was mistaken, because my shrimp dish had cheese in it. She said it shouldn't and walked over to my table with me to check out my food. Somewhat unsure herself.... tried to tell me that it wasn't cheese because cheese was not written down on her hand written list of ingredients. She then went back to the Spanish speaking gentlemen in the kitchen area and the Spanish speaking gentleman verified that it was in fact cheese. She then walked back to my table and apologized about the cheese and then offered me two other dishes that I could pick from. That they could make quickly. She said quickly, because now they were closed for the evening. I told her that I was not interested in the two other things she suggested and by this time (almost 45 minutes after I initially ordered) I was tired and I was afraid to try anything else at her suggestion. Food allergies are something that a Food Safety Manager would know about. I politely told her that I was not interested in anything else. She said, "well let me know if you change your mind." I told her that I just wanted a refund. She then said to me, "we don't give refunds. This is why I am giving you a choice of other food." I said, "you suggested and gave me the wrong thing that contained cheese and after I specifically told you my allergies prior to placing an order?" She sighed over and over again breathing out heavily. (The breathing and sighing lasted until I left the building) She was visibly upset with me. My family and myself felt very uncomfortable. She was stomping around back and forth across the floor and behind the counter where the register is... like a three year old having a miniature temper tantrum. She was then trying to explain to the Spanish speaking gentleman, in English, that "there was queso on it, and she, meaning me, didn't want queso." There seemed to be a language barrier between the two of them speaking to each other, because she kept repeating herself over and over again loudly enough for me to hear this across the room. This ordeal took at least 20 more minutes. She then came over to me and rudely asked, "will you be okay with cash refund?" read more

Second time at this little establishment in Saco. The décor is sparse and functional but not particularly comfortable. The coolers are very loud making it an extremely noisy environment. Add to that the raucous Spanish language television running the background it's a sonic nightmare. The staff was friendly and placing an order was easy. This time around I ordered tamales. I have loved tamales since I was a kid in the deep South. We would pick up handmade tamales from a lovely elderly woman from Mexico who sold them from a stand in front of her home. The tamales at Quiero were pretty bland. The pork was sparse and tasteless. Mostly poor quality masa that had a stale aftertaste. I picked the pork out of one and never even unwrapped the second. A waste of $10.00 for two globs of near tasteless masa. I would not recommend this café. With a few tweaks it could be a great place but as it is, I suggest moving on to some of the better Latin American food joints in Portland. There are plenty of options. When visiting family in Saco, ME, I had the opportunity to eat a few times at Quiero Cafe. Walking into Quiero Café in the summer is wonderful, because the small block of buildings is decorated with flowers all over. The atmosphere here is vibrant with real wood and brick walls. There is a very nice mural on the back wall, and photographs of different places in Latin america. But the cuisine is what makes Quiero Cafe outstanding. Empanadas, arepas, cuban sandwiches, latin-style hot dogs, fried plantains and more. The exotic tropical lemonades and smoothies will blow you away. The staff is very friendly and efficient. This place is also great for a specialty coffee. Everything was delicious and well priced. You will not regret it. read more
