First experiences at any place are vital, Ryan ensured our first visit was going to be the first of many. I'm not much of a beer guy for starters, he made sure to ask me questions to lead me to the right drink. That gunpowder cream was delicious. I've never given that term to a beer before. Their vodka? If you are from the LA area, you should definitely check this place out! Valentine's massacre and the head over heals IPA were my favorites. Other beers were really good as well. New beer and spirts "speakeasy" style tasting room with amazing 1920s Prohibition Era decor. Dark wood, dim lights, plush couches and chairs with great friendly bar staff dressed in black & white with numbered name tags serving some great new beers for now and spirts soon to come. When I first heard the news, I was overjoyed and absolutely excited about Rob Ruben's coming to town. A brewery and a distillery? You had me at hello, you beautiful oasis. So let's start with the good news, the beers are outstanding. The Gunpowder Cream ale is fantastic and its grapefruit counterpart is refreshing and not overpowering. Their vodka is smooth and sips incredibly well while served neat. I'm excited for their white whiskey but sadly it hasn't been available until our third visit and my wife chose to get one of their cocktails, a "White Whiskey Flapper" which completely overpowers the spirit with pineapple and lime juice. Next time back, I'll have to walk away with a bottle or try a bit of it neat. Hands down the product being sold and served at Rob Ruben's is tasty and will really prove to compliment the other breweries that are in the South Bay. That's the great news - what Rob Ruben's is cookin' I want in or around my belly on a frequent basis. But now, a few of the growing pains... We've been to Rob's three times now, the first time before their proper opening and twice after the official opening day. Strange to say, but the vibe, decor, and ambiance were actually BETTER before the proper opening. One might say that Rob Ruben's is having a bit of an identity crisis in its early days. On our first visit, prior to opening, we came during the day. The tasting room was still a work in progress but the bar, the lighting, and the music were fun and energetic. A relaxed atmosphere that reminded me a bit of the tasting rooms we frequent quite often. The bartender, whom we quickly learned was one of the co-owners, was friendly, described his beers to perfection, and really made us feel welcome. An early evening visit left me feeling comfortable, relaxed and focused on enjoying the wonderful beers and spirits that Rob's has to offer. But on the second and third visits, we were shocked to find the vibe and the atmosphere of the tasting room had changed dramatically. It was as if the energy and the vibrancy we had experienced on the first visit had been sucked out of the room. Fun and upbeat music had been replaced with Josh Groban croons, and slow ballads from the 50s, 60s, and the... 90s? Is this a speakeasy or a Ramada Inn hotel bar? With all of the "speakeasy" theming in place, the decor suddenly began fighting with itself. Three different time periods are all fighting each other for prominence as you have the hip and trendy Edison lighting fighting with social club furniture, industrial exposed brick construction and mismatched draperies that are distracting from the centerpiece of the room: a wonderfully designed beer bar and a smaller cocktail bar counterpart. Picture The Next Door Lounge on Highland Ave. if designed for a student film by a still in training production designer. Rather than embracing some of Los Angeles' incredible landmarks from the past for inspiration, the room opts to veer away from true speakeasy design like The Varnish or a modern counterpart like The Noble Experiment and instead gives a hyper-real recreation akin to something you might see on the Star Trek The Next Generation holodeck. Board games like Jenga and Cards Against Humanity, which are commonplace for tasting rooms completely fight against the speakeasy concept, as does the bright lighting both from the brewery on the other side of the glass and from the practical lighting in the bar. Truth be told, on the second and third visits - my wife and I couldn't get out of the tasting room fast enough and have talked about how we'll only do growler fills and bottle purchases from that point forward, because we had left the tasting room even more tired and even more drained than we had entered. If Rob's wants to be a speakeasy, they should really embrace it - lower the lights 75% to hide the decor, block out all the windows (including that which views the brewery/distillery), kill the KOST 103.5 jams, ditch the boardgames, and really set a speakeasy vibe in the room. Decide on an exact time period and design around it. Push those chips to the center of the table and go all-in on being a true speakeasy inspired by those that have come before. Let people focus on the conversation and the libations in a darkened and intimate environment as most speakeasys do. Otherwise, it feels like Rob Ruben's should veer in the opposite direction and embrace what it feels like it should be rather than what it's fighting: a young, energetic, industrial space near the beach that serves incredibly delicious beers and spirits. Relax a bit. Kill the drapes. Pump some more energetic music through that great sound system you installed. Liven the place up a bit. It's tough to take any stars away from what would be a five star review... but man, the atmosphere in the tasting room knocks it down to four -- with the hope Rob's will find its true identity and really run with it and boost it back to that incredibly strong five stars. read more

Amazing beer. Strawberry Wheat Beer and Hitman are our favorites. I almost do not want to tell anyone about this place because it's so good that you don't want to share. I have to give a shout out to our awesome bartender #019 (Tiana) who's just that great that I need to put her on my review. Needless to say, if you want a proper beer and you have been scarred by the LA bar scene, this place is your turning point. And, if you want liquor, they will have Vodka and Gin by the end of the month. They will have rum and whiskey by end of the year. Amazing beer. Amazing ambiance. Amazing service. I was here for the grand opening and was super impressed with the setup. Really comfortable and chill tasting room, slick looking brewing and distilling equipment, and of course great brews and spirits made this an awesome place to spend the evening. Rob, the owner, really cares about quality and will definitely shoot the shit with you so make sure you get a chance to chat with him if you are around. The place is very close to the airport so a great way to kill some time with a layover or before you head over to the airport. I will say they had a Belgian Quad that I had and it was delicious and powerful! Can't wait to taste more of their products as they get more established! read more

I've been here for 10 minutes and I can't say enough good things about this place. First, it was awesome to walk through the distillery to get to the bars. Then the bars are totally decked out in 1920s style. Very unique for a brewery, to have a theme. The beers themselves are varied, which is nice because they aren't so IPA generic like a lot of craft places. And good Lord they have craft hard alcohol! Very nice, and very unique. I can't wait to try the Belgian they have brewing now. Since they are brand new it will take time for them to get the full menu they're planning on, but so far the beers are great! And the service was excellent. Loving the old school bartender outfits, and everyone was more than willing to talk about beer, or anything else for that matter. My new favorite spot by far! I've been going to Smoky Hollow Tasting & Taproom several times a month for the last 6 months or so, on various days of the week, so I believe I'm in a good position to give a detailed account of my experiences there, which have been nothing but amazing. From my very first visit, to my most recent one last Friday, I can say I've been met with great service and great drinks every time I've been there. Formerly known as Rob Rubens Distilling and Brewing, Smoky Hollow Tasting & Taproom (and more importantly R6 Distillery, which is what the spirits are branded under) provides a unique experience unlike other places I've been to. They have a good variety of spirits including several different types of whiskies, bourbons, rye, gin, vodka, and rum- each has it's own unique twist from the standard spirit. They have a number of cocktails they feature, ranging from a standard old fashioned (which they do very well), to some more unique creations that unleash the flavors in their different spirits. They have some great beers on tap as well, my favorite being their russian stout on nitro called Dirty Lil Russian. They also do growler fills of their beers as well if you'd like to take something home with you. What's interesting is they also have a few cocktails on tap, such as their version of a Moscow mule, among other things. Bottom line- the cocktails and beers are great. I will say there is one downside, however: Due to state liquor laws for tasting rooms, they are only allowed to sell you one cocktail per person per day (or 1.5 ounces of hard alcohol I believe...). However, you can order as much beer as you want. Let's focus on service and atmosphere for a second here. The bartenders here are all very good at their craft. Tyler, Andrew, and Meredith have all been great and are super friendly and attentive. The tasting room is always kept neat and clean, and has a very cool atmosphere. It's got a speakeasy vibe, with the prohibition era's dark wooden bar and furniture theme, but at the same time is welcoming to all. While there are no TVs here (keeping to the speakeasy theme), they do have great music playing in the background. On Fridays and Saturdays, they typically have live music, or comedy, or food trucks, or something special going on. They're starting to add other events throughout the week as well so be sure to ask them about those. They do provide a tour of the distillery a couple Fridays a month which also includes a few tastings, so be sure to check that out. It's totally worth it! As far as the crowd goes, there is a good mix of clientele. Great spot for grabbing a drink or two after work during the week, or if you're looking for something a bit more exciting definitely check it out on a Friday or Saturday night. One last thing: the owner, Rob, is a very cool dude and always a pleasure to talk to when he is around. Smoky Hollow Tasting & Taproom has gone through some significant changes in 2018 that has seen an expanded menu, newly remodeled tasting room, the addition of VIP memberships, and more fun and excitement for all. Rob and Team- you've done a great job so far and I do look forward to seeing what's in store for the future. So if you've made it this far through my lengthy review- don't wait around any longer. There should be two $ for this place and not one. Beer is decent but not worth the price, the atmosphere and ambiance is cool, maybe that's why their beer prices are high. They do distill their own liquor here, but didn't get to try it. I'll come back again to try the liquor, but won't be back for the beer, at least not at their current prices. read more

Last weekend we went to a couple breweries in the El Segundo area. Started out at 3 Weavers then went to EL Segundo. While at El Segundo a friendly guy mentioned Rob Rubens down the street. We stopped there last and boy am I glad we did. Great speakeasy vibe, friendly bartenders and an incredible hazy IPA (my new fave). This place seems to be operating under the radar as I hadn't heard it mentioned before. If you're into the hazy unfiltered IPAs, you gotta come try their offering. Can't wait to go back! read more

Another little gem in El Segundo! Located in the industrial side of the town, quiet, out of the way. It has the feel of a "speakeasy", great 20's atmosphere, dark, open and inviting. Beautifully furnished with warm, classy furniture, comfortable and very welcoming! I was blown away with the beer, had the Hitman (delicious!) then the Citra beer (I forgot the name), and tried the cream/grapefruit. They all were fantastic. I can't wait to go back and try more. Such a great atmosphere with a speakeasy theme. Even the bartenders are part of the theme, with "name tags" using numbers (#054, #033, etc) because it was illegal to serve alcohol during prohibition. If you come during non-peak hours, the knowledge imparted is superb. The beer is equally amazing, with the hitman on caffeine being my favorite (Valentine's Massacre in a close second) and the specialty brown ale being my husband's favorite. read more

Great spectrum of flavors on tap here! We used the tasters to go from the Grapefruit-Infused Cream Ale up through the German style Hitman and on to the Saisons. Don't neglect the cream ale - such a lovely beer but so easy to drink you could overlook the subtle flavors. If you care about coffee make sure you try the Hitman with cold-brew Intellegensia poured on top! It was a little tricky for us to figure out parking, but there are spots on the street that work out. read more
