After a long week, the last thing I wanted to do was cook dinner. It was late fall and I was keen…read morefor a drive so I pointed the car in the direction of 'Nashville's Queens' and looked for a place to strike my fancy. Surati had been on my radar for a long while so when I drove past, I knew that I had made my mind up. Despite it being a Friday night, it wasn't very busy. The inside is small but not so much that you'd have a claustrophobic attack. Parking is easy (thankfully; a rarity these days) so after walking in... I sorta stood there. I'm not new to small mom & pops but I didn't quite know how things worked here and rather than call out, I waited to be greeted. I would have to continue to wait. No wanting to stand in silence with a nearly empty dining room, I asked about the ordering process. Maybe the kitchen (and front of house) was busy with online orders? My service was standoffish at best. Normally I would have left but open hours on Friday night can fluctuate and I didn't want to start over in another queue (it was after 7). Had I eaten in, I would have gone for a dosa. Not knowing how that would travel, I opted for Szechuan fried rice (medium). I hadn't so much as ordered and sat in a booth to look at my phone to waste some time when I was told my food was ready. Either Surati has the fastest chefs in the city or my food was not made to order -- and I certainly didn't experience the 'extras' other Yelpers describe. Not wanting to get into it, I paid and left. I came home to a generous amount of well-seasoned biryani rice and vegetables with just enough heat to let you know you're alive but not so much as to wreck your mouth. I took the W. Food was good enough and I felt that I got my money's worth. Everything else about my experience, though, led me to conclude that this would be a one and done for me. Onto the next.

We went at lunch time on a Friday and the place was totally dead which felt weird, but the service was great and food was made to order and delicious. Lots of flavor. The shrimp chowmein had a lot of cilantro and onions. Fair warning for anyone who doesn't like that. I feel like this place would be a great place to go with their live band some nights. Definitely give it a try if you are in the area.

The momo were definitely the star of the show. We had all the different fillings and cook methods, and all were fantastic! Chili was my personal favorite. The dal bhat was also very good. The waiter was super nice and very helpful, giving us suggestions on what to try since it was everyone's first time. He was the only one working though, so the service was very slow. He said multiple people called out. It took quite a while for the food to come out, but once it did everything came flooding out. The only other thing was that it was much too dark inside. Once the sun went down you couldn't see much. Maybe that's the ambiance there were going got but it made it difficult to see anything. Outside of those small things, it was a great time! Will definitely be back.
