Bought two new Trek bikes and a Thule bike rack for my car. Problem is, I didn't have a hitch. Was worried about putting something on there that would detract from the look of my 2012 Passat TDI. I love my car and didn't want an ugly looking hitch on there. BUT a hitch bike rack is far easier to put on and take off plus my old rack (a Bones rack) had left marks on the paint of my last car. Friend recommended these guys as someone she goes to all the time. No issues. I found them to be very helpful and knowledgeable. Went into the store, ordered and paid for the hitch which would come in the next day, appointment to install the day after. Dropped car off for install but got a call an hour in. They had mistakenly ordered the hitch for a Jetta and it wouldn't work on mine. Bummer. The reason I still give them 5 stars is for the way they handled it. The owner (possibly store manager) took care of me himself when I returned. Sincere apology, they paid shipping on the replacement hitch AND since I had paid for a Jetta hitch which was $90 cheaper, they absorbed the difference. THAT I would not have expected! Hitch was installed a week later, no hitches (pun intended) in the process this time! Can't wait to take my bike to the beach on it this weekend! read more

This review is two years over due, but came across it since I was looking for a place to get a bike rack. I came here two years ago looking for a relatively cheap bike rack for my hatchback. Although they initially recommended the top rack, I did not want to spend that much since I am not an avid biker. They only had one trunk rack for my car. My bike was also right on the limit for the rack but they said it would be okay. I knew nothing about racks so I went with their recommendation. I had to drive to Davis with the bike+rack. The rack ended up denting the ledge of the trunk from the weight, I never used the rack again. I spent around $300 for something I used once. If you're looking for a hitch rack or top rack this is your place to go. But if you want a trunk rack, go somewhere else. read more

Updated review. A really bad experience turned awesome. Read through for a twist. I called them early in the week to schedule hitch mount and bike rack purchase and installation. Was told Wednesday - awesome! Called me on Tuesday - we can't make it, we don't have it in stock. Scheduled install for Saturday. Called on Friday at 5:30 pm that they cannot do anything for me before Monday. Apparently the delivery truck broke down. At this point, I wrote a one-star review, and canceled the appointment. Come Saturday, they call me around noon and say they have what I need, and that I can come any time to have it installed. Since we were still, sort of, within what we agreed, I decided to give them one more chance. I went over there, and within one hour had a hitch and a bike rack installed. I had a great experience at Rack N Road! The customer service was really great and the rack installation for my car rack and SUP carrier was very quick and efficient. I called in originally to get a comparison quote and installation quote. I purchased my car rack and SUP carrier on Amazon, but the price Rack N Road quoted me would have come out to about the same price. Installation (plus locks) came out in the $125ish area. They were able to squeeze me in for an appointment the same week even though my schedule really sucks and I could only just make it in their last installation window of the day. I think they were doing another installation right before mine, so it took a total of ~1.5 hours from beginning to end. The guy who rang me up was really great about explaining how to use the carrier, load a board onto it, and secure it. All of my questions were answered and the price was, in my opinion, pretty great. While I was waiting I also overheard them having conversations with potential customers who walked in, and it was really clear that the two staff members who were on the floor were very knowledgeable about their products. The sales-clerk showed us two other options, one of which ended up being better for our needs for the same price. We put the deposit down and then scheduled the install. I am in the market for a trailer hitch for my Volvo SUV and called RackNRoad. The sales person on the phone was super helpful, talking through all the different options and suggested that I use the Draw-Tite hitch as it is lower profile and saved my information in their system. I finally found some time to come to the store a week later to purchase the hitch and schedule the install. This is where things when south. As I pulled into the parking lot, I saw a SUV up on jack ramps and some kid under the SUV installing a hitch. There was no install bay, no hydraulic jacks; it was very make shift off to the side of their parking lot (yea, that's what your $350 install fee gets you) Anyway, I go into the store and a young fellow came up to help me. I told him about my saved information in the system but he never pulled it up. I told him that the person on the phone suggested the Draw-Tite hitch. The sales person shook his head vigorously and in a condescending tone: "We don't recommend Draw-Tites here, you should only use Curt hitches. If you use the Draw-Tite, your Volvo warranty will be IMMEDIATELY voided. In fact CURT hitches are the ONLY aftermarket hitch APPROVED by Volvo that will not void the warranty. I guarantee it and you have my word on it, call Volvo, you will see that I am right. Oh and we have a sale on CURT hitches." [BTW, this is inaccurate info, see below] Wow, I was a bit taken back and told him that his colleague suggested the Draw-Tite over the phone and that I did not like how the Curt hitch looked. There was no effort to try to find a solution for what I wanted, he pretty stood behind the counter staring at me, now annoyed that I questioned his recommendation. Thanks for making a potential customer feel uncomfortable. I then asked a few other questions about bike racks but clearly the sales guy could care less. I left the store and actually called Volvo USA directly to confirm if the sales guy was right or pulling info out of thin air. Volvo USA told me that using ANY after market hitch does NOT void the warranty right away; if there is any damage, it will be up to the warranty assessor to see if the hitch was the cause of damage. Also, Volvo does not endorse nor approve ANY aftermarket hitch (only their OEM hitch of course). I get sales people need to move units so I don't mind the hard sell for the CURT product. What irked me and just totally put me off was the blatant misinformation about the Volvo warranty and the arrogance to stand there to think that I was dumb enough to eat that up. On top of that, no effort to try to work with the customer to solve the problem (which would have been at least a $1K+ sales). Such a shame, I was ready to plunk down some money and close the deal today. Thank you for such a bad experience. read more

I had a really great experience here today. I called Rack N Road and this is my first time buying a cross bar kit for my 2017 Dodge Journey. Anna was very helpful, kind, knowledgeable, & most importantly she helped me find used cross bars for my SUV (I am all about saving money). What I also appreciated was that Anna fit me in the schedule today because my installation wasn't to difficult, that was also greatly appreciated considering that I live in Northern California, I visit my father when I can . My father approved of Rack N Road because they are awesome & they were done in a reasonable time to install my cross bars! Also installation has lifetime warranty & if you lose your keys to your locks for your crossbars they can help you with that as well! This is a long overdue review. I bought a rack about two years ago. Chris helped me locate the appropriate one, and I bought it because it seemed rock solid. Alas, a year went by and I did not use it, as I had to undergo surgery on one of my elbows, and the original rack was a bit too heavy given that I was emerging from rehab. I knew that I had no basis to ask for anything -- but decided, on a whim, to call Chris anyway. He told me to bring the rack along and said he'd do what he could. Upon noticing that the rack was brand new, he decided to replace it and sell me a less heavy one, which has served me quite well. I should add that he refunded me the price difference from the original one. Chris could simply have shrugged his shoulders when I called and I wouldn't have held it against him -- but he just went above and beyond. I should have written this a long time ago, but thought I'd do so at least now during these crazy times. I can not recommend any store more highly than this one and recommend them without any reservation. Can't wait to find an excuse to go there again before long! read more

I was looking for a hitch mount ski rack for my wives Lexus CT200 as she did not want to put a roof rack on her car since she already has a 1.25" reciever hitch for her bike rack. I stopped by Rack N Road and Stevie told me neither Yakima nor Thule made one that would adapt to her Thule bike rack as her bike rack is a wheel mount rack (this was the same info I was getting online) and they do not have a ski add-on option. He told me he would research it with his managers help and get back to me (sure you will I thought). The next day he left me a message they had located a company (Inno) which made a rack that was exactly what we were looking for (although a bit expensive). They ordered it that day and in 3 days it was in their store and assembled (I payed the $40 for assembly). Awesome team work by Rack N Road! read more

I filed a rack bike warranty claim and was a nightmare to get solved by these guys. They did the imposible to not extrañar the item that wasn't function. I spend more than 2 weeks to get an answer from them and when I got the approval to exchange the item any associate wanted to finish the installment. I had to wait there like 2 hours just for a bike rack installment. The associate responsable for my warranty claim was issued other duties than mine that supposed be priority as next costumer. Rack N Road was my go to place for roof racks and hitch receivers for 15 years, until it wasn't. I was recently in to purchased a bike rack from them. It was a T2 Pro with a two bike extension from Thule. In short the rack doesn't fit my 4 bikes despite it being marketed as a 4 bike carrier. It also caused cosmetic damage to my $10k bike, as well as my pedals caused damage to the rack itself.(More about the rack and why I don't recommend it for some full suspension mountain bikes at the bottom paragraph) My problem with Rack N Road specifically is that when I told them about damage to my bike, and to the rack itself from my bike pedals rubbing on the rack(more evidence of narrow spacing between bike trays), they simply tried to say they had no idea that was an issue and then they proceeded to point me to Thule for a warranty claim. I told them I was not happy with the rack, and the fact that the rack can not safely transport my 4 bikes at the same time, basically rendering the rack useless to me, and that I only bought the rack because Chris(the owner and manager) of Rack N Road highly recommended it. In fact, they still recommend even though I have tried to explain why they might not want recommend it to everyone. Anyway, Chris said that they have not heard of this issue before, which makes sense, as not everyone has four new wide axel full suspension mountain bikes. Instead of trying to understand why the rack doesn't work, or trying to make sure I was happy(with the non functional bike rack they sold me) they just tried to pass the buck and send me to Thule. I told them I was not happy with there response, and that they basically sold me a rack that doesn't work for me. They again said they are sorry, but couldn't offer anything more than that. $1,100.00 out of my pocket with no support or help when the product doesn't work. I guess I would have liked them to offer something. Maybe buy my rack back, maybe credit towards a rack that would work. Instead I just got sorry. If I'm spending my money in a local shop instead of buying it cheaper online and shipping direct, then I want a company that owns their errors or at least can support me if there is an issue. I have never had a company leave me dry like that before, and it definitely won't happen again. FYI sites like Jenson USA and REI constantly have these racks on sale, and have always been eager to help if problems come up. To be fair to Rack N Road the bike rack should have been designed better, and it wouldn't be obvious that this rack wouldn't fit full suspension mountain bikes, as they only more recently have become wider in the rear with boost spacing. But the way they wrote me off and didn't offer any support was a major red flag. Also to be fair, this was my first really bad experience here in 15 years. Why I don't recommend the T2 Pro with the extension for boost spacing. If you don't know what boost spacing means, it's a reference to rear axel spacing. 12x 148mm in the rear. Its not brand new, and it's only been around for a few years now. Bikes with this wider standard are just that, wider in the rear, and some bikes are made tougher like my DH race bike so they are extra wide. Anyway, as new mountain bikes get wider rear ends, racks will need to learn to give more space in between bikes. The T2 pro works decent for two boost spacing bikes, with exception of the wider mountain bike pedals scraping the rack(happens to me all the time with the T2). Take the pedals off and you are fine, and it's only slightly inconvenient. But when you add the 2 bike extension there is less space between the 2nd and 3rd bike trays. There is barely enough room for the bikes to clear the arm of the tray, and when the rack starts bouncing(from any driving) the bikes wobble and scrape the arms of the tray right on the seat stays(top of the rear triangle of the bike). With non boost spacing there is enough room, but with my bikes it's not even close. So if you have 3 or 4 bikes with 12x 148 rear axel spacing, or "boost" consider other racks. Thule acknowledged this when I brought it up, and offered me a discount on a new rack as well as sending me a new arm to replace the one that was really chewed up from my pedals hitting it. More than the nothing thatrack n road offered. Response to Rack and Road: So your sorry that my rack doesn't work as advertised, but you can't help. Thule offered no compensation, but did warranty the arm, so at least the rack looks nice and new. This rack still doesn't work as marketed, and I still am out eleven hundred dollars, and I still have to sell this rack. I still need to buy a new rack which I found online. So in short, you would like to help, but you can't help at all. I think at this point, more than a month after I tried to get help from you guys I'll just move on. Honestly every response you give me about how you want to help but can't is just throwing salt in the wound. read more
