In a panic I went back to the store as we had 16 people coming for dinner with the intention of buying the green beans. Sammy could not have been nicer and more helpful and cheerfully said, "Mistakes happen. You keep the baked beans and let us give you your green beans." He really saved the day for us as most of the kids present did not like baked beans. He said, "Have them try them, they'll like them", and they did! Incredibly disappointing. Moved out to Carmel recently and have driven past this place so many times. Decided today to give it a try and wow, that is a poor excuse for barbecue and poor value for the money. Most importantly is the food quality and I have to say the only thing that was good were the hush puppies. The pulled pork had zero flavor, the nonexistent brisket was overcooked and hard to eat and I saw them take the sausage out of some plastic bag and just heat it up. The mac & cheese was inedible, and the corn pudding had no flavor. Same thing for the Bread. Soggy without flavor. On top of that, check out the pathetic portion size for over for a +$30 meal. This is a good choice for ribs in the Indianapolis area. Always tastes freshly made. Friendly servers. Hardly ever busy inside either and the seating area extends to the outside in a semi private area which allows for conversation and convenience. Aside from the ribs, I recommend the turkey is delicious too. Shout out for solid baked beans and collared greens. Pro tips -- visit on a Tuesday for discounted individual ribs on the bone. We came to city BBQ, which we do a lot! We like coming on Mondays and Tuesdays. On Mondays, you get double points in the reward program. On Tuesdays, you get a discount on ribs. Today was neither day. But we have always wanted to try their chili so we thought we would give it a go. It sounded good on a cold day. Unfortunately, we would not recommend it. For a bowl, which was a small bowl in our opinion, it was almost $10. If you got a side and a drink with it, the price is around $15. A bit expensive in our opinion. For the price, at least, the chili was made with brisket rather than ground beef. It was OK. We went to the ice sculptures in downtown Carmel a while ago. The various caramel fire stations were having a chili cookoff. Thank you fireman for your service! You are also very good cooks! One fireman had a brisket chili which was fabulous! In fact, in our opinion, it was much better than City BBQs. As mentioned, we love City BBQ. However, go for the ribs, brisket, and pulled pork. Not the chili. I've been here several times and it's usually decent. The food comes quickly and it is ok. This visit the greens were a a little off. Just really salty like they had been there awhile. The brisket is good as is the pulled pork. The sausage is decent too. Sometimes the brisket is a little loose. The service is counter style and you take your tray to a seat. I have a love-hate relationship with this CityBBQ! I love their food, but I hate that they constantly run out of turkey! The last four times we have gone they have not had turkey (and it has not been late in the day!). Yesterday I called about 430 to see if they had plenty of turkey left (would have placed a mobile order if they were low or save saved myself a trip if they were completely out) and was assured that they had plenty. By the time I got there (about an hour later) they were completely sold out. I was sad and it's understandable that this will happen sometimes but I feel like it happens so very often that they are out of turkey. City BBQ provides excellent BBQ and sauces, plus they know how to prepare barbecue to perfection! I can't believe that I haven't reviewed City Barbecue yet, as I stop by here on a fairly regular basis. Prior to COVID, I had dined inside but during COVID I have taken advantage of their excellent curbside carry out. Service is always great and the food is excellent. City BBQ is perfect whether I am picking up a quick lunch for myself or ordering for a large group. My favorite lunch order is the three sides plate. Their sides are all so delicious that I have trouble deciding which ones to choose. Home style potato salad, green beans, corn casserole, slaw, and many more all taste like they came out of my grandmother's kitchen. The hot chicken tenders weren't very spicy but did have a kick to them, I was pleasantly surprised by how juicy and crunchy it was. We thought the leg/thigh was also pretty excellent! My only issue with them was that they are a bit salty. Mac & cheese was very cheesy, which I loved, and the hush puppies were amazing!!! The slaw was less than average, it was very watery and didn't really have any flavor to it. The banana pudding was okay too, I wasn't overwhelmed with flavors, and it wasn't too sweet which I liked. I've had food from here before at catered events, but this was my first time going into one of their restaurants. I was glad other Yelpers explained how this works because it is a little confusing. Basically, you can order a sandwich sized serving of meat, with or without a bun, or buy meat by the pound. All meat comes plain and you add your desired sauce, pickles, etc. from the bottles and condiment bar over by the drinks. Sides can be purchased in single servings, but it didn't seem there was an option fir larger "family-sized" portions of the sides to go with the pound servings of meat. Beware, they run out of things. They have a sign that says to expect this. At 6PM on a Tuesday, they were pretty much down to pulled pork and brisket; they were out of just about everything else (ribs, burnt ends, chicken, stew). So...if you want something in particular it's probably best to call in an order ahead. That said, I was not disappointed with my brisket sandwich. The meat was tender and flavorful and the assortment of sauces was good. I tried the bourbon sauce, original and one other that I can't remember, but based on the name it sounded like it would be spicy, but wasn't really. I had sides of green beans with bacon and baked beans with brisket. No, there is not much for vegetarians here and I'd say nothing for vegans except for maybe the side salad. Both sides were good and portions were fairly large. They have calories listed on their menu board which is helpful because sometimes it can be hard to guess how much damage might be done with a given side...I mean no one should be delusional enough to think anything here would be low calorie, but it does help to have this information in making decisions. read more

First time in to this fast-casual experience. You order at the walk-up counter & then they call out your order, like they would at a traditional BBQ down south (only exception - in the south all the hot-table options are in pans on front of you & these are in the kitchen so there's a slight delay). I do wish the gal at the counter would have asked if we'd been there before because I didn't really know that's how it worked and it look me staring at the menu for a bit and saying "so do we order here, then seat ourselves" to know what to do. We had a brisket sandwich & pulled pork sandwich + mac n' cheese, green beans & vinegar slaw. There's a sauce & toppers bar near the drink station. I felt like they were either really sweet or really spicy - so I mixed the tangier mustard with the house sauce. The meats were flavorful on their own, though! Mac and cheese was cooked well & had a creamy sauce - tasted like Stouffers to me, which isn't necessarily bad but... yeah. The vinegar slaw had good flavor but was really wet & should have been dished up with a slotted app on the green beans were tasty - with a great bacon flavor and just the right amount of saltiness. Calories are posted on the menu but I did not realize that under sandwiches it was only meat and no bun (at least that's how it appears when I compare to nutrition info online) - mainly because it gives you the option to order it "naked".
