I was pretty excited for our meal here but it was an underwhelming experience. The space is beautiful and the menu looks good. Our server, maybe she was new; but she seemed a bit flustered. Also, none of our party could hear her in the loud, upstairs dining room. For appetizers we had some oysters & clams, one of the pizzas, an order of the bacon, and the onion tart. Each of these was very good and met my original expectations for the food here. Our entrees on the other hand were a different story. The three of us that ordered steaks (1 KS City Strip, 2 120-day aged ribeyes) all agreed that they were way under salted. The two other members of our party, had the crab-stuffed shrimp which also needed salt. We also had some sides: grilled asparagus (good), creamed spinach, and the lobster mac & cheese. The spinach in the cream spinach was undercooked, too much water was left in the dish; diluting the flavor. The mac & cheese had a good amount of lobster in it, but it lacked any cheese flavor. It seemed to be pasta with lobster in milk, topped with cheese & broiled. Like the spinach, it was watery. Overall, I would return to eat at the bar. Listen, this place is beautiful and the ambiance can't be beat. However, we booked the Wine Cave for our rehearsal dinner last week, and I think we hyped this place up in our minds a little too much. Steaks were decent, I've had better by far in North Jersey. The staff we had assigned to our party were just rude. We booked a beer/wine/soda package along with our dinner choices. My husband aka the groom of the rehearsal dinner wanted to drink Stella... our waiter had the audacity to tell him "that's all the way upstairs, so I'll get this one, but if you could chose another beer to drink the rest of the night that'd be great" Seriously? Go get a pitcher of it from "all the way upstairs" so you have it on hand, better yet, I don't care if you have to walk upstairs, do your job and leave it at that. I've bartended and been a server for many years of my life, and I could NEVER imagine telling a customer this. Considering that happened within the first 5 minutes of our arrival, it immediately put a bad taste in my mouth. It just seemed to get worse from there. My 2 nephews didn't like the veggie that came with their meal, and our waiter was politely asked if we could get a different vegetable for them, even if we needed to charge it separately or we needed to pay extra for it, not only were they completely rude about it, they flat out said no... Our party was booked until 9:30, at 9:28, the groom and best man wanted a shot of tequila before heading out and the bartender told them "your party is over, I don't care if you're the 'guests of honor' it's time for you to leave". Certainly not any way to treat people if you wanted an additional tip on top of the 18% you were getting from the party. We are notorious for overtipping wait staff because we've been in the industry before, but I could not in good conscience give any more money to such a bunch of rude staff. At this point, I literally wrangled our 36 guests out because I didn't even want to be there anymore. Booking with Pat Leone seemed great at first and then the lines of communication seemed to drop. Every time she called me back 4-5 days later telling me "oh, I just got back from vacation"... this happened 3 times in the matter of 2 months... there's no one else who works with you that can handle anything in your absence? Not to mention, anytime I sent an email, she "never got it". Mind blowing. Do yourselves a favor and don't have a party here. It's not worth the hassle or the price tag, very disorganized and the staff working their parties are rude. The entire process was completely disappointing. Everything from the ambiance to the food was wonderful. I sat at a high top in the bar area accompanied by two others. The fire place was nice. Started dinner with the tuna tartare as an appetizer. The tuna with the guacamole was delicious, the sauce was a little spicy for my liking, but was still good. For dinner I had the filet mignon with a double stuffed baked potato. The filet mignon was cooked to perfection, the potato was good, but I've had better. Jake was our server. He was attentive, knew the menu and was very friendly. Overall I am extremely happy with my experience at Rails Steakhouse. I go back and forth with how I feel about Rails. I like their menu, but for the price, I'd​ say the food is only decent. I've had a few great dishes and a few bad ones. Same with the service, we've had some great experiences and some rude ones. Last time we sat at the bar and the female bartender was great, I​ wish I could recall her name. Next time, I called for a reservation and the hostess laughed as if it was so ridiculous that I would think they would have an opening on the upcoming saturday night. How hard is it to just be nice? Owner is very rude as well so I suppose it starts from the top. - do not have private parties here - my friend had a terrible experience hosting one. The restaurant allowed random people into the supposedly private area, they ordered drinks on our hosts' bar tab and then we were thrown out 3 hours early due to a water main​ break at the restaurant. things happen, but the owner treated my friends terribly and refused to work with them on a resolution. read more

We had been meaning to try Rail's for quite some time, but never quite had the chance. I am so glad we finally got the chance to try it this evening! I cannot say enough great things about our experience. We had a fantastic dinner. Our server was excellent, and Mark the manager made sure our experience was absolutely perfect! My husband and I went to Rails about a month ago. From the baked bread to start of our meal, to the gelato at the end of the meal, it was hands down one of the best meals of my life. So we go to the same places every time for family dinners (Rod's Steakhouse, Tabor Road Tavern, Grato), but this time, we decided to go on Yelp and look for something new. It took us about 30 minutes to drive out to Towaco (in the Lincoln Park area). The town is beautiful, a lot of large modern homes, looks to be a very affluent area. The steakhouse is right next to the train station, so the location is fantastic for those commuting in the area. They have a beautiful interior, all wood, very classy, great for special occaisions. At first, they seated us in an odd rectangular shaped table in the back, but they were quick to find us another table once we requested a change. I appreciated the fact that the hostess did not make a big deal out of it or give us the stink face for this request. Anyway, on to the food. This place has a great selection of appetizers. We ordered the tuna tartare, the crab cake, and kobe meatballs. Our favorite was the crab cake. You know how when you take that first bite of some seafood, and your brain just immediately identifies it as certified F.R.E.S.H.? Well, this was one of those times. Do yourself a favor and get the crab cakes here. The tuna tartare was also excellent, the fried chip on top was a great complement. Finally, the Kobe meatballs were also pretty good, but I wouldn't say it stood out. The meatballs tasted freshly made, but it didn't taste much different from other meatball dishes I've had in the past. Ok, onwards to the entrees. As it is a steakhouse, we naturally decided to go with all beef entrees. I ordered the new york strip, my dad ordered the filet mignon, my brother ordered the Waigyu steak, and my mom ordered the kobe beef burger. We all ordered our steaks medium rare, but unfortunately they ALL came out medium. Cooking steak beyond medium rare should be considered a SIN! I would much rather have my steak undercooked instead of over cooked. I'm not sure if this is an American style of cooking, because it happens quite often (at least in my experience) in American steakhouses. I was also disappointed in the waigyu steak, as the taste did not stand out much, and there was not much fat on it. Interestingly enough, the best entree of the four was the kobe beef burger. The beef tasted fresh and juicy. Sooo for entrees, the only thing I can recommend is the kobe beef burger! Finally, there are the desserts. We got the creme brulee and the carrot cake. The creme brulee was disappointing as it was cold. I know most upscale places offer this dish, but unless it's a french restaurant I would recommend against getting it. The carrot cake, however, was a different story. They cut us a HUGE slice (enough to feed all four of us) and it was delicious, the perfect amount of richness. All in all, my review is pretty mixed, you're not going to get all around great food, you need to read some reviews beforehand, but there are some excellent options here. The service is extremely professional, and the decor is beautiful. I would definitely give them another try, but I wish that a steakhouse could just make great steaks :( read more

Birthday dinner disappointing! I've Been going for years and supported them through the pandemic. I accepted slow service when they were short staffed, but can no longer continue to dine there. I had reservations for today on main dining floor and even confirmed it in the morning and when I got there they did not honor the request. I sat outside with sun beaming and humid temps. The front desk did not care and the service was not great. Food had to be sent back so we did not eat at the same time. We left without dessert because it was not an enjoyable time. We love Rails. It's consistently good and great for a large group. The appetizers are great and we started with the burrata, the Kobe meatballs and the cured bacon appetizers. All were delicious, but we particularly liked the burrata. One of the couples we were with ordered the porterhouse. It's made for 2-3 people but the two of them cleaned the bone. I tried it and agree it was super flavorful and worth it for those who have a very large appetite. I ordered the short ribs. They were very tender and flavorful. Highly recommended. My husband had the filet. It's always tender but not as juicy as the porterhouse or NY strip. We somehow made room for dessert, which you should not miss. We ordered the chocolate 10 layer cake, the butter cake, the key lime pie, and the linzer tart. Surprisingly the butter cake was all of our favorites but the key lime pie was a sure second favorite. No one really likes the linzer tart. I think when you order something that is so well known and they made it slightly different it can be disappointing. But all other desserts were amazing. So be sure to make room. We loved all of the speciality drinks we ordered. The wine list is vast and never disappoints. We headed down to the speakeasy. It's a nice place to enjoy an after dinner drink. There were a few very large groups celebrating 30th and 40th birthdays, which we all agreed is a great idea. Highly recommend this place. read more

Last weekend I ordered the the exact same steak at a hyped steakhouse in NYC (American cut). That steak was 3x's the money and not half as good as the steak Rails put in front of me. I took my boyfriend here last night to celebrate his birthday. This was our first time coming to Rails. We arrived at 7:15 for our reservation and we were seated promptly. We ordered the crab cake appetizer, it was very good! For our entree, I ordered the Kale salad (but replaced it with arugula) and the skirt steak. The salad was delicious, highly recommend. The skirt steak was good, cooked medium rare perfectly, but fatty. I was only able to enjoy 70% of it. My boyfriend ordered the NY strip steak, it was perfect in the middle and a little too burnt on top. The double stuffed potato was great, highly recommend and you can definitely share it as a side. We also got the Mac and cheese, it was delicious!! For drinks we had a glad of the Rose it was very good (I can't remember the name of it but it had the peach flavor). Dessert we ordered two: the Creme Brûlée & the Brownie. The brownie was good but a lot of fudge and very sweet, I could not finish all of it. My boyfriend for the Creme Brûlée, he liked it, it has a very potent banana flavor. Ok. So it was one of my favorite places, even defending everyone saying how much money it was... I would always say you get what you pay for......STOP ... that thought... so not true... Not sure if they have new chef, or just trying to make even more money... But we ordered a lot and nothing was GREAT. Service was so off. So ridiculous... They act like they say it's gonna be a wait, place was 1/2 empty... waitress had no idea what she was doing, sent food out immediately after appetizers, the guy that delivered the food rolled his eyes because we asked to have the appetizers to go... First I want to state that the food and service far exceeded our expectations. I made a reservation at Rails on May 27 for June 8 at 5:45 for our anniversary which I noted on the reservation. There was traffic, so we called the restaurant to tell them we would a few minutes late and were told that we had a 15 minute window before they would give our table away. We received a text at 5:57 saying our table was ready as we approached the hostess desk. She directed us to the upstairs hostess who brought us to a high top table in the center of the deserted bar which was unacceptable to me. Upon checking, she realized that I did request a table and went downstairs to see what was available. After a few minutes she came up and told us to wait a few minutes and that they would be setting a table for us. I wondered what happened to that text to say that our table was ready? By about 6:25 we were seated at a four top at the entrance to the dining room where every guest and worker had to pass by. I didn't think that this was a place to celebrate an anniversary when there were several more secluded tables for two around, but I was annoyed and didn't say anything. The hostess asked if were were celebrating anything and although it said it was an anniversary on our reservation, I confirmed that it was our anniversary. We had delicious drinks, expertly prepared, appetizers and our meal were delicious and our server Julia was a true professional. I had no expectations but between my reservation for an anniversary dinner and our hostess asking about the occasion, I guess I assumed that there would be some acknowledgment in the way of a dessert or drink but nothing was ever brought. I think that the hostess didn't think we would make it on time, so she gave our table away and got caught because we made it within the 15 minute grace period! Overall they took what should have been a special occasion dinner at an upscale restaurant and turned it into an ordinary meal out. I emailed the restaurant personally but never received an acknowledgment, so I know my little review and patronage don't matter to them. I so wanted to love this restaurant since I've heard so much about it, but I can get good food and service in a lot of restaurants, and still be made to feel special like my dollars are worth it to them. read more

The food overall was really good. We started with a dozen oysters, half east coast and half west coast. It was good. The only problem is that it took a really long time to get everything. We ordered the porterhouse for 2 and a few sides to include the lobster mashed potatoes, mushrooms, and asparagus. The filet was phenomenal but the NY strip was a little too charred. The sides were really good as well. The service we had tonight was just subpar. There was a table of 4 who sat 15 min after me and my wife and got their food 10 mins before us. Recently celebrated my sister in laws birthday. The ambiance is really nice- upscale steakhouse. We had a party of 21 - and early reservations, so we got a room upstairs. For apps, we had the meatballs, calamari and octopus. All were tasty. For dinner I had the short ribs and my husband got the dry aged steak. Kids menu was decent - has filet mignon as an options!! We bought our own cake so I can't comment on the desserts, but we did get the coffee and it was pretty good. The 3 floors (Speakeasy, Restaurant and Lounge) are fantastic. Service is impeccable. Everyone is friendly and warm. Like the atmosphere. It then starts to deteriorate... Food is overpriced and not worth what they charge. Drinks are even more ridiculously priced. Folks, this is Towaco NOT NYC. I can honestly put this place on par with Outback in regards to quality. "Can you move your bag, so I don't fall and smash my face". Always something you want to hear from a food server. Where to start with Rails. I watched it get built from the ground up. I was very excited once I heard it had opened as I had moved away. Immediately booked reservations with a group of 8. Tried through open table but they only took reservations for 6. When I called they were more then helpful to get us the table. When I walked in and was greeted at the door I was thinking this is the new place. Great looking bar and little tables to relax at. That's about the end of the good stuff. Oh and nice comfortable chairs. We actually joked about them, because the table we sat at seemed to be a banquet foldable table, "seems they ran out of money after the chairs" We arrived at 7 for our reservation and were promptly sat. We had to wait for one other individual but that wasn't going to stop us from ordering food as I knew what she wanted. Unfortunately our waitress didn't ask if it was going to affect our ordering so we didn't order till 7:30. During that time we got our drinks. 1 soda came first. Then a few minutes later our water then a few minutes later adult beverages. At 7:30 we final ordered. Apps, salads, soups, steaks, sides, raw bar. App: (not all had by me) Bacon: meh. Covered in syrup (I had) French onion soup. No good compliments. Salads : ok nothing great Raw bar: didn't smell or taste great. (Will find out later tonight how there really were) Sides: fine. Asparagus, Brussels sprouts, mashed potatoes. Issue here is the some apps came out first. Then soups and salad came out. Ok, but not for the people who ordered soup as the app to be followed by salad. So everything was ok, NOTHING, mind blowing. Now we wait. Till 8:30. Dinner finally came. During our wait though, a few drinks were ordered. Multiple times, and rarely came. My wife order a glass of wine before dinner to have with dinner and didn't get it till we were half way done. Some of you might say why didn't you ask the waitress. 2 points. We did when she came over and She rarely came over. Side note regarding her: we over heard her telling a table how she used to handle 20 tables at a time. I find that VERY hard to believe. So dinner. Steaks all around. My wife and I split the porterhouse for 2. It was at best, average. When I think porterhouse for 2 it has to stack up to Peter Lugers, or a closer restaurant, Wayne Steak house. I was far from impressed. Nobody spoke about how great their steak was. Unfortunately nothing was impressive. Even the seafood "tower" (I forget the name) wasn't impressive. It was all on a plate with ice, no presentation. Oh and back to the comment that started the review. That is what was said to us from a food server while trying to place our porterhouse onto the table. The act of the serving it to us was an embarrassment. Trying to spoon juice onto our steak pieces. There was no juice. Disappointed. So. Would I go back again. Sure. In a year when hopefully they have really learned how to run a great restaurant, because I believe it can really be one. I'll preface this review by saying I have a love-hate relationship with steakhouses. On the one hand, I love the generally classy ambiance, which this place definitely has, but I also despise the heavy mark-up on wine and the a-la-carte menu theme. Yes, in most steakhouses, I usually expect to pay $7 or $8 for a baked potato, but I only expect to pay three times more for a bottle of wine versus what I would pay in the liquor store, even though most restaurants pay their distributors way less than retail. While us consumers should consider this highway robbery, a 3x mark-up on wine is average. And I understand why steakhouses do this. They need to compensate for the handful of customers who are going to send their steaks back to the kitchen, claiming they're overcooked. Now that once-beautifully dry aged hunk of beef gets tossed in the garbage and the chef has to prepare a new one all over again, hoping it's to the exact liking of the picky customer. At Rails, however, the mark-up on wine is about four times what you would pay retail, which really IS highway robbery. Consider the J. Lohr Cabernet, for example, which I know retails between $12-14 (because I buy it all the time at various liquor stores). $53/bottle at Rails. If location factored into the initial rationale for this mark-up, I think it's time Rails re-evaluates before they go off the rails. Four of us walked in here on a Friday night and had to wait an hour for a table. Not bad for only being opened for 10 months. Then again, we were by far the youngest people in the joint so I'm not sure the regular clientele would care too much about my price surge diatribe. I now digress ... As for the food ... The housemade mozzarella salad ($13) was nice and fresh. Not sure where the tomatoes came from, but they were damn good. The broth for the cockles and chorizo ($13) was awesome. Awesome to the point where I could have eaten it as a soup, but I estimate 10-15% of the clams were served to us unopened. Bad clams or not cooked long enough? I wasn't sure, but I wasn't about to find out either. The Maryland crab chowder ($7) was very tasty and had just the right consistency. Not too thick, but not watery either. One of our two porterhouses for two ($44/per person) was cooked to a perfect medium-rare, as we ordered it. The other one, which was supposed to be medium, also came out closer to medium-rare, but better undercooked than overcooked. (For the record, I did not order the medium.) Overall, the steak was delicious, but my preference is to have SOME seasoning, and by some seasoning, I mean just salt and pepper. No need to ruin it with anything else, but this seemed to lack any seasoning. As for the four different sides we ordered, the mac and cheese ($9) was the best. Just the right amount of cheese, just the right cook on the pasta so it was still al dente and the mushrooms were a nice touch without making the dish watery, as mushrooms tend to do if they aren't cooked separately. The sauteed spinach ($7) had no flavor whatsoever. I'm guessing this was another case of not using salt and pepper. The parmesan truffle fries ($5) didn't blow me away, and I'm ashamed to admit, as a self-proclaimed fry connoisseur, that I left wondering whether they were frozen or fresh. I'm leaning toward the former. The mashed potatoes ($7) tasted like they came out of the box. I hope I'm wrong, but the only reason I'm inclined to think they didn't is because I did catch a clump at one point. I'd prefer clumps in every bite, but that's my preference. As for the service, it was prompt, but perhaps a bit too pushy and aggressive at times. We wanted to take our time, but it seemed our waiter did not. Perhaps this is because we didn't get seated until around 9 and he didn't want us hanging out all night. I get it. Been there, done that. Aside from the service, the valet is completely unnecessary considering the parking lot is right next to the restaurant. As for the "speakeasy" downstairs, yes, it's fun to figure out which book from the shelf needs to be pulled in order to open the door, but the whole speakeasy theme is kind of ruined by the fact that you can actually see inside the bar through the giant meat and cheese room window. read more

My wife and I dined at Rails on Saturday . We were celebrating our anniversary. When my wife made the reservation on open table she requested a booth in the dining room and noted we were celebrating our anniversary. When we arrived for our reservation we were seated in the side dining room at the end of the bar at a table in the corner. We decided not to make a fuss because at 5:30 it was already quite busy. We ordered drinks and an appetizer. Our appetizer was the calamari, it was fresh but definitely overdone. The side dining room is extremely loud with people moving chairs above in the upper area. Our entree's were filet mignon, it was cooked to perfection and tasted excellent. We also ordered hash browns and grilled asparagus which were good. The service was a bit off it took us time to get refills on our drinks. They certainly did not rush us but I wish they were a bit more attentive. I wish they would have at least acknowledged our celebration. That would have made our experience that much nicer. read more

Rails Steakhouse was better than the Best! We went there tonight for my husbands Birthday Dinner and truly enjoyed it! Briana was the BEST waitress ever, Great Customer Service and made us feel so welcomed! Answer all questions and advised us with a smile, so sweet! My lamb chops melted in my mouth as did Tommy 's steak! So delicious! Then the Manager Mark came over to be sure all was well and we had everything we asked for, Great Customer Service! To me Customer Service is #1 and Rails passed with Flying colors!! Can't wait to go back, truly such a great experience! read more
