The espresso martini was by far one of the best ones I've had easily, a top 3! The food came out in about 25 minutes and the rigatoni verde was absolutely delicious! Al dente pasta with a really good sauce! This was a very delicious meal, easily a top 3 Italian restaurant experience I've had! Staff were friendly! Beautiful restaurant inside and out and fantastic service. I hit up happy hour and these are my thoughts. Bruschetta- not bad nice spin on a traditional dish but definitely not bruschetta. Rhode Island Calamari- very different from any calamari I've ever had. The calamari was cooked perfectly very tender and it wasn't chewy at all just not my cup of tea. Mozzarella Di Bufala- Definitely the most disappointing dish of all. 13 dollars for 4 small bites??? Absolutely not worth it. Now they claim the espresso martini is the best in Mystic.?? Not sure how many bars are in Mystic but if you're claiming you have the best espresso martini it should be amazing and it just wasn't. Vie Emilia in Mystic is outstanding. Handmade pasta, beautifully balanced dishes, and creative combinations done right. We started with the meatballs--moist, tender, and full of flavor--followed by a light, fresh frisée salad. For dinner, the fish special and seared tuna were excellent, but the mezzaluna with porcini filling was phenomenal. We honestly wished we had ordered two more. Drinks are a hit--don't miss the espresso martini with its subtle, refreshing lemon twist. Sat at the bar since no reservations and also love peppering and annoying the staff with our questions about what is coming out of the kitchen! They were entertained (I hope) by our presence. I ate so much bread and the accompaniments that I didn't think I could handle the pasta but "where there is a will there is a way" and I persevered. That porcini mezzaluna was DIVINE. Even hubs who doesn't care for ricotta was in my plate the whole time. Don't skip on the dessert - we enjoyed tiramisu and that decadent Italian flourless chocolate cake back at our place. Great service, and was so looking forward to this meal but my pastas were not good. My appetizers were delicious and I thought I was in for an incredible meal. The octopus pasta was insanely salty, to the point of being inedible, and the short rib pasta was so gross. The meat was somehow dry but also mushy and felt like it was giving cat food. Everything was exceptional. The scallops were perfectly done while being sweet, crunchy, and chewy. The calamari is not your typical calamari, not being fried and actually having a touch of spice. The sauce is not typical Marinara sauce. Nonetheless, it was delicious. The melanzane was amazing, crispy, saucy, perfect for eggplant lovers like me. I have to say everything that we had here was great. However for the price I think there are better places. I think we walked out with a 250 dollar bill after an appetizer, two entrées, some wine and a dessert. I still think the experience was worth it but there are so many other wonderful restaurants in the area and around town. We stopped in on a Saturday night with no reservation. The manager was able to seat us at a high top table in the bar. I couldn't wait to try the expresso martini. It was advertised as the best ever! It definitely was made well! No baileys, real expresso and a rich froth on top. We sampled the charcuterie board. It was a nice array of meats & cheeses. I personally could do without the Mortadella and would prefer Sopressata or salami but a choice wasn't given. The short rib Ravi was flavorful, even though the rib was a little tough. Not enough sauce was provided, so ask for extra if you order this dish. Chocolate Torte I expected more cherries to be inside the torte. Without the garnish of cherries on top it was kind of bland. The wine Invetro was a great paring with the pasta. There is no skirting around the fact that Mystic is a charming city. Add to that a great Italian restaurant in the center of town and you've got yourself a scene straight out of a movie. Via Emilia reminded us of one of our favorite Italian restaurants in Bar Harbor, Maine. It had a similar vibe -- cozy and welcoming yet elegant and refined. The restaurant was perfect for our weekend getaway in Mystic, given its central location, right by the famous Mystic Bridge. We made reservations earlier that week for Friday dinner, and I am so glad I did; they were packed! The menu was extensive and had many options, everything from pasta to meats. The pasta included Italian classics, but they added their house twists to most dishes. We started with the mozzarella cheese as an appetizer and were quite impressed -- the hot peppers on top made for a nice combo and added a spicy kick that you don't often find at Italian restaurants. My partner had sweet potato gnocchi with Fontina cheese. It was delicious, but it was also quite heavy. The fontina cheese was the star of the dish. I had the Pollo: two chicken pieces served with gigante beans and braised greens. The sides had more flavor than the chicken. The chicken was good, but it could have used more flavor. We ordered a bottle of Venetian wine to go with our dinner. Most of their wine costs around $45-50 for the cheapest bottle. Service was top-notch. Our server was attentive throughout the night. We spent $140 for two, which included two entrees, one app, and one bottle of wine. Not bad! We left satisfied and would return. read more

However, the host advised that I call back a day before the reservation to see if anyone had canceled. Thankfully, someone did and I was able to get the time that I wanted. The menu had a nice variety of dishes, and included the ability to substitute house-made gluten-free pasta (which was fantastic). Our waiter was really knowledgeable and helped us understand what could and couldn't be made GF, as well as options for requesting vegetarian dishes in case we didn't see the exact right option on the menu. The wine list was wonderful and when it was time for dessert, our waiter also brought out a sample of an amaro to taste because we did not know what those were! The food was absolutely delicious! I was particularly impressed with the mushroom ravioli dish - it is very common to have a vegetarian option at an Italian restaurant be mushroom based, but I have found very commonly these dishes are way too heavy and have an absurd quantity of mushrooms. Their Mezzaluna ravioli dish was delightful and beautifully balanced. We actually all had it, including a variation the chef created so that one of the dishes would be gluten-free. We all agreed that our meal at Via Emilia was just what we needed for a warm and comforting way to finish off a family wedding weekend. There was great intentionality with everything they did here - I really felt like they took time with us and wanted to give us an outstanding experience. The caramelized shallots, garlic and Rosemary on top of the cut then add the most amazing combination of flavors that you will for sure savor every single bite. Squid Ink Lobster Ravioli From their Specials menu, so happy we asked to hear the specials. This special item immediately stood out as a must try. And it certainly delivered in abundance. Cannot even begin to describe the insatiable flavor profile that this dish delivered. The raviolis were fresh made with a perfect ratio filled with deliciously seasoned lobster. I simply have no words on the sauce. Absolutely incredible. If this item is still part of their specials, you must try it. Could not have been happier with our choices of entrees. In full disclosure, I'm an Italian food snob. The ambience, customer service and overall restaurant were awesome - centrally located in Mystic, quiet restaurant and excellent host/wait staff. Unfortuantely, the highly recommended (by the staff) tagliolini was terrible. It was definitely my worst meal in Mystic that week, and the red sauce was really bad. It was also not pipping hot when served. My friend's melanze eggplant dish was good, however. And IMO, Italian restaurants shouldn't charge for bread! read more

Friendly welcome as soon as I walked in. I chose to sit outside because it was a beautiful Friday evening. The waiter came immediately to take my drink order and tell me the specials. I opted for the appetizer of the day, prosciutto e melon which was beautifully presented with honeydew and cantaloupe draped with prosciutto drizzled with olive oil and topped with mint. It was a delicious and refreshing bite but the cantaloupe wasn't quite ripe enough. A minor miss. I ordered the eggplant rolletini for my entree. It came an acceptable amount of time after I finished my appetizer. The sauce was perfect. Not a typical thick sauce you get in Italian restaurants but the same light, tomato-y sauce my mom used to make. The only misstep in this dish was that the cheese sat under the broiler a few minutes too long and was burned. Really unfortunate because it could be tasted in the bites of eggplant touching it. I finished the meal with the cannoli and OMG they came with 4 mini cannoli and a berry coulee that I could have drank from a glass it was so good!! I would love to come here again. read more

We ordered mozzarella di bufala as an appetizer. The mozzarella with peppers was fresh and had great oregano and basil flavored olive oil that we loved dipping our bread in! For our entree, we had the Agnolotti. It was unlike anything I've had, made with homemade pasta and a light and refreshing lemon flavored sauce.
