I needed a quick combo meal, so I stopped by Rainbow Garden. Which is located between Domo Sushi and Marshalls. When I walked in the lady behind the counter was busy between taking orders and answering the phone. She said she'd be with me shortly. She was nice but she didn't have time for any fluff. She was working working. Lol. So good job for her! They have typical Chinese dishes, lo mein, wontons, chicken, egg rolls, and etc. The prices seemed reasonable. The lunch specials are slightly cheaper with a smaller portion until 2 or 3pm, and they come with fried or white rice, a soda and a pork egg roll. I ordered the sweet and sour chicken combo with crab rangoon. The sweet and sour chicken was decent. They had alot of breading on them, but tasted fine. The sweet and sour sauce was ok also. The rice was a little skimp! Most places they give you rice on both sides, but they separated theirs, and it wasn't a lot.. So I didn't get full off the rice. But the chicken portion was ok. I usually have leftovers, but I ate it all in 1 sitting. I did like the crab rangoon with the sweet and sour sauce. It had a slightly sweet taste which I thought was tasty. I don't know why, but Mom wanted to have Chinese for dinner and "quick-order" Chinese to boot. Mom went with a chicken and broccoli. She's been here before so she knew to ask for the broccoli "well done" since it's usually rather crunchy. I ordered a simple pork lo mein, sticking to a classic that they would have no problem preparing. And yes, it was done nicely with plenty of pork in there and the pork fried rice with it was excellent. A little hot mustard and we were at perfect. It use to be my favorite Chinese spot and I would travel over 40 minutes to eat here and bring friends from out of town here to share this great cuisine. I noticed about a year ago when I came it wasn't as good but still better than most. Today I was in the area and decided to get sesame chicken and sweet and sour chicken for my father that was visiting. The sesame was so chewy I was embarrassed I had given it to my dad and the sweet and sour was tasteless along with the chicken fried rice not even the duck sauce and soy (which I normally don't use especially soy) couldn't bring it around. $30 wasted I hope one day they can revamp the place I use to know. read more

Ok so Covid household so we ordered door dash and picked rainbow garden for the 4.7 star reviews. We had sweet n sour chicken. My dil and granddaughter had this but for $11 the serving was small. My son ordered Mongolian beef but it was 1 pound of white onions, a sprinkling of green onions(had to look for them) and maybe 4oz. of beef. SERIOUSLY! NO LIE! We had to look for the meat! It should be called MONGOLIAN ONIONS! The wings were crispy but really small. Normally Chinese restaurant wings are huge. These were small. $8 for 4 small wings. The hot n sour soup was good but had no meat(pork and chicken strips are a mainstay) and no tofu. Flavor was good. There were plenty of wontons in the wonton soup so that was nice. Was in the area so I decided to try the lunch special for Rainbow Garden. The first thing I noticed when I walked in was how clean it was. This is one of the cleanest Chinese places I've seen. They get an extra star for that. The prices I think are little more expensive than a typical place. It took about 15 minutes for them to make the food. The food was ok, nothing to write home about. We ordered the crab Rangoon, chicken with broccoli, orange chicken, and Chicken Lo Mein. The Lo Mein was really good though. I'm not sure if I'll be back but I wouldn't not recommend them. The family special is a great option that will leave you with plenty left over. They also have a diet menu. I have to update my review and say that I don't recommend this restaurant. I'm extremely allergic to shellfish (shrimp, crab, etc.) and ordered only items that do not contain those ingredients. I've been having an allergic reaction ever since I ate lunch early this afternoon. This is very dangerous. I'm not sure what is going on in that kitchen but you need to be more careful. Adding ingredients that are common allergens can literally end someone's life. I didn't order shrimp and yet here I am with a swollen throat, and a puffy, itchy body. How this place has anything more than 2 stars I guess I will never know.. I ordered a simple beef lo mein and chicken fried rice. For lack of better terms, this was THE WORST Chinese take out I've ever tasted. Let's be real here, this is just chinese take out, I'm not expecting much here. I'm not walking into a Mcdonald's expecting a perfect Kobe Steak Burger. Just some noodles and fried rice. My LARGE beef lo main had about 9 slices of celery (?!) in it, a SINGLE piece of green onion lost in there, and I kid you not, 8 tiny shrubs of "beef". Not to mention it was SO BAD TASTING. It was SOUR. My chicken fried rice was even worse. There was nothing but rice in it. I had 4 pieces of chicken in it. It tasted so bland that I had to put it in my frying pan, re-cooked and re-season the whole thing. Take a look at the photo of my "Chicken Fried Rice" when I poured it out into my pan, it's pathetic. Food was ready quickly, tasted amazing, and was affordably priced. We had plain lo mein noodles, broccoli chicken lunch special, and general tso's chicken lunch special which came with rice. It was enough for my 4 kids (ages 2-11) and I to have our fill and have a little bit of leftovers for under $20. I honestly think it's my favorite of all of the Chinese places I've tried since moving to Chesapeake a year ago. Interior is not a fancy restaurant by any means but it's clean and much nicer than similar Chinese food places I've been too. My only complaint was it was SO hot inside. It must have been 80-90 degrees easily and it was a beautiful day out (in the low 70's). I wish they would have propped the door open (kick stand was duct taped up otherwise I would have done it). I have had a lot of Chinese in this area and this place is in my top 3. They do take out and delivery and I find the delivery to be a real bonus. Tonight we dropped around $40 in this place and everyone was happy. We got the General Tso's Chicken, Pepper Beef, Garlic Beef, Sweet & Sour Chicken, Mixed Veggies, Crab Ragoon & wanton soup. All the food was really good. The crab rangoon was actually sweet which was different for me but still good. I really enjoyed the soup. Ordered takeout last night from Rainbow Garden. I ordered sesame chicken for myself and orange flavored chicken for my boyfriend. Our meals came with the exact same sauce with sesame seeds sprinkled on my chicken and orange peels sprinkled on his, and the sauce tasted like sweet and sour sauce. The brown ginger sauce dish was amazing in taste; the broccoli and carrots were cooked just right. It appeared to be a clean establishment - floors, walls countertop. Rainbow garden used to be our go to Chinese restaurant. Over the past year or so the food has become more hit and miss. Recently more miss than anything. The General Tso's is hard and the rice has been crunchy. The lo mein has not failed me yet but we will be looking for another place to eat. I finally found a Chinese take out place that doesn't make me sick! Rainbow Garden is delicious and their food is fresh and flavorful. Their egg rolls are crunchy and delicious and not dripping with grease. I wish I would have ordered more than one! While most take out places pack their pork fried rice with huge chunks of onion, Rainbow Garden put in just the right amount and chopped them up nice and small allowing them to compliment and not overpower the other flavors in the rice. Their chicken and broccoli is divine! The chicken tastes fresh and melts in your mouth, not dry or gummy, and the broccoli had a good crunch. And of course it was smothered in that fabulous sauce that was not overly salty or full of garlic. Just the right blend of flavors. I will definitely be trying more from their menu. I have been going to No. 1 chinese for YEARS! After seeing the great ratings on yelp for Rainbow I decided to try. And there food is amazing!!!!!! I still like No 1, but let's just say I haven't been back there since I've tried Rainbow . I always get the shrimp and broccoli and it is cooked well each time! Finally, I found a very good Chinese food restaurant near my house. I go to Harris Teeter and Yo Mama frequently and never noticed Rainbow Garden was right there. I'm glad I saw it now. The General Tso & Sweet and Sour Chicken was excellent, and the lo mien was on point. I knocked off a point because Chinese restaurants have (in my opinion) the best sweet tea...except for this Lipton Tea tasting place. It was good, but I can make better at my on house. But I can't make good Chinese food. Great taste! read more
