Very cool spot, never thought I'd find a log cabin in the middle of Houston! Rustic in decor with many antiques and country feel. Unique menu, lots of wild game. We all had the restaurant week special, I had the Quail bites, Salmon and blueberry pie. Everything was very tasty and nicely presented. Our waiter was excellent as well, very helpful and friendly.
Came in to try out their restaurant week menu! Great choices, great environment, and a chill time. Service in the bar area was spectacular!
Met a friend at Rainbow Lodge on a Sunday afternoon for a somewhat early-ish dinner. For some strange reason, we both thought it was located somewhere else. Upon entering everyone was very friendly, and since I arrived before my friend did, they went ahead and sat me and let me know that they'd bring her to the table when she got there. The restaurant was nicely decorated and our server came over and took my drink order while I waited. I ordered San Pellegrino and our server brought me an ice bucket like they put the wine in so that it didnt get hot before I could finish it. Its little touches like that, that mean so much. After my friend arrived, and we had time to look over the menu, we ordered appetizers. The way we do it is... I order one and she orders one and we share. Thats pretty much how our whole meal usually goes. Appetizers: Me - Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes- they were pretty good, but not anything that really jumped out at me. Friend - Seared Sea Scallop with Rainbow Trout Caviar - it's served wirh a crispy potato nest, champagne butter, and chive oil. It was delicious and we both were sad that it didn't come with more than one scallop. I'm sure both of us could have eaten a few of them. Entee: Me - Griddled Gulf Red Snapper with Creole Remoulade - its served with dressed shaved brussels sprouts, asparagus and lump crab salad topped with a fried oyster. The fish was very good and super fresh. The thing I wasn't crazy about was the shaved brussels. I guess I didnt think that they wouldn't be cooked. I understand wanting to add texture to the meal, but it just wasn't my cup of tea, but I would eat that fish again any day of the week. Friend - Rainbow Trout with Lump Blue Crab and Pecan Brown Butter with sauteed spinach with garlic. I must admit, she was winning at ordering. Once again, hers was much better than mine. The trout was kind of crispy and had a great flavor. Next time I may just have to order that myself. Dessert: Me - Chocolate Mousse Cake. It's described as a decadent trio of fluffy mousse layered on rich cake base topped with chocolate ganache seasonal berries. It was very good and super rich. The mousse was smooth and the cake was moist. What more could you ask for in a chocolate mousse cake. Friend - Warm Croissant Bread Pudding. They describe it as bread pudding with brown sugar whiskey sauce, almond tuile cup, vanilla ice cream. So my friend prides herself on her bread pudding. I mean, she makes a REALLY good one, but as soon as she tasted this one, she said... this one is BETTER than mine. Thats a huge compliment coming from her. She is super picky about bread pudding. I also thought it was good. Service: This is my only real complaint and it isn't awful. Our server was pretty busy with a larger table so we kind of got neglected. She did apologize, but we did have a wait a bit to request things. We weren't upset, I would just expect a little bit more from Rainbow Lodge. Also, the valet staff wasn't very friendly at all. They didn't say thank you when given a tip. They acted like they weren't very happy at all.
It's always a treat when we get to have dinner at Rainbow Lodge. This visit was a last-minute idea, which made it feel even more special. We enjoyed sitting outdoors in the beautiful setting, and as a bonus, we even got to witness a wedding proposal -- such a memorable moment The food, as always, was full of incredible flavor, and the service was amazing. Thomas was excellent -- professional, friendly, and attentive. He truly enhanced the entire experience. Then the dessert was out of this world!!
What a great place for a date night! Great and friendly service with beautiful ambiance!! The food was too notch and the little things like the sauce the my paired things with took it over the edge! We enjoyed the taste of the wild for an appetizer, had the antelope and filet for entrees and then tried the pan a cotta and bread pudding for dessert! All was excellent! Definitely try this place! You won't regret it!
I live in The Heights so I cautioned three "newbies" to Rainbow Lodge that Chicken-Fried Chicken Sundays will be busy and essentially, if we want good service, sit in the dining room. Yet, we sat in the bar area and LAUREN was extremely attention and helpful. We did not want for anything!!!! All 5 of us had a spectacular time!!! Kudos to manager, Mary, and server, Lauren. And I'll even mention our water server who also found a pair of tweezers for my friend's splinter! ABOVE AND BEYOND. A Heights GEM!!!!
We went on a Tuesday evening at 6:30pm and there was almost no crowd. I had a happy hour old fashion and my wife had a glass of red. We split an app and each got an entree. Rainbow lodge is not cheap but it's worth every penny. I've been to other restaurants in Houston that charge 20% less but you get horrible service and bland food. Rainbow lodge has super premium food/ drink and super high end service for slightly higher than average pricing. We really enjoyed ourselves. We will definitely be back!
This was my first visit here, as we had our company Christmas party last night. I looked at the menu beforehand and honestly didn't see anything I thought I would eat. But this was the epitome of "don't judge a book by its cover." Everything was absolutely amazing. Let me start with the ambiance. Wow. The outdoor seating area is breathtaking, especially with the Christmas lights illuminating the space. It was truly beautiful. Our server, Izzy, and the other young lady (whose name I sadly forgot), did an incredible job. Izzy even shared that this building used to be an actual lodge back in 1908, it has a lot of history! The customer service stood out from the moment I walked in. Every employee we encountered was professional, attentive, and genuinely kind. You can tell this establishment takes pride in training their staff, because the service was truly top tier. Now... the food. The chicken with mashed potatoes? AMAZING. I've never had capers before, but they added a flavor I didn't know the dish needed. And my favorite part of the night? The warm croissant bread pudding. I don't know who came up with that idea or recipe, but whoever it was, give them a raise immediately. That dessert has no business being that good. I will absolutely be back for another helping, along with trying other dishes. My entire party talked about how flavorful the food was and how exceptional the service felt. This place left a lasting impression, and I'll definitely be returning. Thank you to the entire team for working so hard to take care of our Christmas party, and not only our party, but the other parties that were happening last night as well. Your hospitality truly deserves recognition.
Just to be clear, I think Rainbow Lodge deserves 4.5 stars but because there are no half stars, I'm giving them 4 stars in the review. We went to Rainbow Lodge on a Friday night with a reservation for 6 people. We had been wanting to come here for along time and Houston Restaurant Week is a great reason to try new places. We were excited for the wild game choices that we had heard so much about. Parking: This place does not have a self parking lot so valet is your only option unless you want to park across in the neighborhood and walk across a major street. The valet is free but they ask for tips so keep that in mind. Ambiance: When you walk into the restaurant, you are immediately met with taxidermy animals which represents the lodge atmosphere. The restaurant had a cabin feel with the wood and fishing rods on the wall. The seating inside is pretty standard, but one note on that is the chairs at the table were super uncomfortable. The main dining room can get loud but nothing crazy. Service: The service was very good here. We never had to ask for our water glasses to be filled and our waiter was very attentive. They spaced out the different parts of the meal nicely and we didn't feel rushed for each course. Drinks: our group got two drinks. We had the old fashion and gin and tonic. The drinks were ok. Nothing special. Food: we came here for Houston Restaurant Week for their $55 dinner menu. The menu had a lot of options but some of the high end options had an additional charge. Below are the food times we got. Warm rolls in a cast iron: we got two orders of the rolls. Each order comes with 4 rolls each and a side of pepper jack pimento cheese, bone marrow butter, and European style butter with sea salt. The rolls were fantastic! The different butters and bone marrow really complemented the roles nicely. Definitely get this if you come here! Fried Texas Quail Bites: these were a nice start to the meal. The quail was fried well and came on a bed of grits and gravy. This was our favorite appetizer. Crusted duck salad: this salad was good but nothing I would go out of my way for again. Golden beets and summer stonefruit: this was a refreshing beet and fruit salad. Once again, nothing special. Game duo of grilled Texas quail and venison medallion: the quail and venison were very good. The venison was lean and cooked medium rare. The quail had that chargrilled flavor. The crispy cheddar grit cake was also very good! Grilled bison shoulder tender: two of our friends got this bison shoulder and it was cooked very well making the bison tender and flavorful. This came with trumpet mushrooms and mashed potatoes which were also great. Grilled North American elk chop: this was the best entree the table had. It was a $38 upcharge but man was it worth it. The elk was cooked to perfection and the bone on the chop was gnawed to the bone. It was seasoned well with a coffee seasoning and you couldn't taste the gaminess of the elk. Chocolate Mousse Cake: this was a layered mousse cake that was rich and just what you would expect from a chocolate cake. Very good! Warm croissant bread pudding: this bread pudding was so good. Our favorite dessert! It came with two pieces of croissant pudding and vanilla ice cream and was a great way to top off the meal. Rainbow Lodge was exactly what we were expecting for our first time. Once again, this place is a 4.5/5. Lots of fun meats and sides and HRW made it way more affordable! We would come back to Rainbow Lodge for sure!
My friends and I came here to try the HRW menu and to celebrate their engagement. The staff was super kind upon arrival and the interior was very southwestern, Texas ranch style. I really liked it, and the menu was very cohesive with the decorations and overall vibe. The items I chose for the HRW menu consisted of the smoked duck gumbo appetizer, venison and quail entree and the panna cotta dessert with the drink tasting menu. Everything was super delicious! The gumbo was really good, not that I've ever had smoked duck, so I was really impressed with the flavors Ive only had venison a few times but it was cooked to perfection. The quail was delicious also. There was also a nice reduction on the plate as well. And the dessert was one of my favorites of this entire year. The drinks were all good, but my least favorite was the espresso martini. It was so incredibly strong lol the flavor of tequila and coffee was jarring but my friends really liked it so it is definitely a personal preference. This is such a unique place and I'd love to go back to tour the garden in the back as well.
What a fantastic restaurant. Starts with easy valet, greeted by smiling hostess, and great views in the dining area. I stopped for a drink at the bar and enjoyed a well made old fashioned by a friendly bartender. I felt like i could've stayed and chatted but my dinner guests arrived so i went to the table. We had a small group so we got to try a variety of things: antelope, mixed wild game, redfish, duck gumbo - all of it was fantastic!! And we had the best Server, Izzy. He was attentive and knowledgeable (we had lots of questions). He made the evening a great dining experience
Enjoyed the restaurant week menu. Needed to ask for it during dinner but it provided without asking for brunch and lunch. Our waiter was amazing and the whole experience lovely - should have gotten the chocolate mousse though. That was the prize dessert.
Visited during Houston Restaurant week and will def become a regular now! We went for dinner and had a reservation for 3 at 7pm. Parking is small. During dinner hours, they had a free valet, just tip at the end. Entering, everyone was super nice and helpful. We were quickly seated down and given water and menus. Everything we ordered was . It was my first time having duck gumbo and it did not disappoint. The red fish had fried pork on top with asparagus and horse radish and I'm not normally a fan of radish but the consistency here was so smooth it changed my opinion. All the flavors complimented each other nicely. We also opted to get the bread rolls and this was the star of the show. The bread was so soft and pulled apart effortlessly. The spreads were all so unique and yummy. Dessert did not disappoint either and by that time, I was so full from everything else I had to take it out. This might be my favorite HRW pick! You will not be disappointed!
Went for a couple drinks and ended up trying a couple things. The cabin feel and sportsman's decor welcome and the bar area is tucked away facing the outdoor eating. Had a couple old fashioned and tried some tequila pours. Started with the taste of the wild and it was really good, each of the cuts were unique and cooked just right. Tried the South Texas Nilgai Antelope which was perfect; tender cut of meat with a mustardish flavor, the chosen sides compliment it well. Overall great choice for happy hour or dinner. read more

Somehow I've never been here?? At least not that I can remember. Sunday funday started off with brunch of course. Seating in the main room is better than the little back room. The back room has a cute view and is generally quieter but hotter bc it's by the patio and serves as a sort of service pass through area. It was lovely, service was great and food was delish. Probably one of my favorite restaurants in Houston. I love this place. It's like a rustic cabin that has this tremendous garden view. I haven't had a dish here that I haven't enjoyed. Try everything, you won't be disappointed. They always have dinner specials which are worth a try. read more

I drive by Rainbow Lodge on my way to work a few times a week, but had never ordered from them. Their reputation is one that relies on an adventurous flavor palate, as well as a need for ambiance. The interior is intimate whereas the exterior is much like a large cabin. I ordered a Sunday special jambalaya, which had sausage, chicken, and large shrimp. It was tomato-heavy, much like the creole style from NOLA. I also ordered their duck gumbo, which was great. I had hoped they'd have rice to go with it though. I ordered to-go and the process was quick and delightful. All in all, I paid 30.00, which was pretty good for an app and entree. I'm hoping to try their chicken fried steak sometime in the near future. read more
This has been on my list of places to check out since we live in the area. First I have to say, first impressions can set the tone, and from the minute the door opened I knew the service was going to be great. We were warmly greeted at the front door by the woman at the front, she opened the door and greeted us, we hadn't even made it in yet. It was like being welcomed into her home with how warm and friendly she was! When she found out it was our first time there, she gave us a brief history of the place and said "welcome to the family!" Exactly why I've wanted to try here for a Sunday night dinner, because of the family feel I got from the reviews and its social media. Sooo, onto the food lol. Everything was delicious, cooked very well. I had the Chilean sea bass and my partner had the antelope loin. The sea bass was flaky, and the horseradish mash paotatos had just the right amount of horseradish. His antelope, not sure what the sauce was, but was rich and flavorful. We will definitely be back, for the food and the atmosphere, felt right at home. We came here for lunch on a weekday and enjoyed the welcoming ambiance - this is definitely a hidden gem type of place. I would have never expected the upscale lodge decor and gorgeous outdoor area in the middle of Houston! They have a great lunch menu; specializing in wild game and exotic meats, they know how to offer unique dishes but also have your workday-lunch standards. First time visiting this place, and we brought a very good friend of ours. Nice atmosphere, great service, and definitely the right spot if you want to enjoy wild game. I ordered the wild game mixed grill -- three delicious pieces: elk, venison, and Texas quail -- all perfectly cooked. My friends had the rainbow trout fillet, which was excellent as well. Husband took me for my Birthday, when we walked in we were greeted right away by a nice lady who asked if this was our first time there, which we both said yes. She gave us insight on the restaurant and was so pleasant! As people were leaving she made sure to tell them Ciao, Ciao, sweet dreams! I loved it! She took us to our table #32, we had a perfect view of the patio (outdoor seating) and their yard, which was gorgeous! Quan was our server, he was amazing! We started with dirty martinis which were made with the perfect amount of dirty! For an appetizer, we started with the crab cake, now then if you have ever had Pappas Seafood crab cake, you know how to compare a crab cake. It was a solid 8.2 out of 10, Pappas is a solid 10. Not to takeaway from Rainbow Lodge, but that is my truth. We then split the ceaser salad, perfect amount for the both of us. For the goods! I tried the 7oz Bison Filet special and it was delicious! Cooked a perfect medium rare. Fireworks were all in my mouth! Sooooo good! Their other special was Cobia, which I bet would have been just as good! My husband had the elk chop, cooked a perfect medium rare, with this corn that was out of this world! Now the sweets! I was torn between the chocolate mouse cake, warm croissant bread pudding or the Lemon Ice Box Pie Tart. I am a sucker for lemon desserts, so that's what we went with. We told Quan that it was my Birthday, when he brought us our dessert he had a candle and a card signed by him and the staff, nice touch!! This restaurant experience was amazing! Dined here for Valentine's Day therefore there was prix-fixe menu (starter, main, dessert) with most of the primary menu. Although, I'd looked up the gumbo before, I wanted to try more wild game so I started with the wild game starter. The winner for me was the venison, the bison was good but not as savory to me, and the quail was fine. I had a 16 oz ribeye which I couldn't finish, alongside the asparagus and au gratin potatoes. The ribeye cooked at medium was great and tender. Just enough fat to add more flavor, but enough protein to fill you. The asparagus were surprisingly the standout of the meal - steamed to perfection so they were crisp yet also buttery. I could have used more seasoning on the potatoes - they were cheesy and did melt in your mouth, but it didn't give more than that. For dessert, I had the chocolate mousse cake - I loved the berry addition to it and also saved some for later. My companion had the bison for his entree, reportedly just as good as in his wild game sampler, and the warm croissant bread pudding, which he thoroughly enjoyed. We also tried the fried oysters for an add-on. They were crispy and had a great tasting remoulade. Atmosphere is "upscale lodge," -think nice dinner at a ski resort. I think it would be nice to visit on a warm day to enjoy the patio and the outside view. Our waiter Paolo was attentive and expedient. I will be back for the duck gumbo. read more
Hadn't been here in a while. Lucky to be able to enjoy a pediatric society dinner meeting. Interesting that the space was open and not in an enclosed space for our meeting, but it was still fairly quiet. So easy to hear the speaker and be able to have a very interactive and educational dinner. The restaurant is really beautiful. A very rustic but elegant atmosphere. Service was amazing. Got a hibiscus margarita mocktail that was so cute and so delicious. Interesting that the same drinks are served in different glasses. Starters were either a salad or a smoked duck and andouille sausage gumbo. Entrees were very game oriented. Decided to try something different so I had the wild game mixed grill. New Zealand Venison. North American Elk. Texas Quail. Served with the most delicious cheddar grit cake and broccolini. Tied together with game sauce. An excellent choice. Was able to take a couple of desserts home to share with my cousins visiting from out of town. We devoured the pumpkin praline cheesecake when I got home. Enjoyed the Kentucky Bourbon Chocolate Pecan Pie with lunch the next day. Both were decadently delicious desserts. Service was great. The open room was so cozy and inviting. Okay so we ordered way more than I took photos of. I guess I was just so hungry I forgot to take photos of the other food. I had previously visited this place when I was younger. All I could remember was that my brother ordered a Bison burger and I was distraught and disgusted (I was like 12). But as an adult I thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere and forgot how great the space was. I want to host a dinner here! Our waiter, was kind but very busy - it took him a while to greet us. We started with the gumbo and the rolls. The rolls and the 3 types of butters were so good. I just wanted to eat the butter by itself at one point. The gumbo was okay I wish it was a bit hotter but it was still good. For entrees which I forgot to take a photo of I got the chefs special which was unique (a fish with a pesto sauce) and then my friend got the chicken which was good as well. For desert we got the bread pudding, it was okay - a bit on the dry side but I must say their ice cream was phenomenal! read more

This is a great place to visit with beautiful views from inside and outside. The staff is very friendly and professional. Now the food; the chef is creative. The beet salad was perfect and refreshing. The duck gumbo was good but it could have been any gumbo. The deep fried oysters were my favorite, very light and full of flavor. The foie gras dish was confusing because the raisins over powered the luxurious flavor of the foie gras-that was a miss for me. The antelope meat was great but over powered by the sauce. The trio was very flavorful and fun to try 3 meats on a plate. The lemon tart and the bread pudding fantastic. Recommendations, let the main ingredients shine and lighten the hand on the sauces. This place has amazing customer service, food and overall a great environment. The people here were super friendly and helpful especially because it was our first time here. Came in with my husband for date night. We had reservations at 8 and were seated about 10 min later. The place is really cute with a woodsy log cabin feel. There are tons of taxidermy animals all over the walls. I ordered a thunderbird drink and it was really great! We also ordered the skillet bread and crab cake for appetizers. The bread was stale and barely room temperature. The person that brought it out warned us that the skillet was piping hot. Okkk The crab cake was full of filler and most of the crab was the few pieces they put on top as garnish. We ordered the Alaskan Halibut for dinner. The fish was delicious and well prepared. Imagine a 100 year old sporting lodge log cabin nestled within a now residential neighborhood on a busy street inside one of the largest cities in the US - and then imagine one of the more rustic menus in Houston well executed with attentive service along side. Began our meal with the lodge rolls in cast iron with the bourbon bone marrow butter and the crispy Texas quail bites with white cheddar grits and bourbon bacon gravy, the roasted beets and thumbelina carrot salad, and the Taste of the Wild sampler (quail, antelope and venison) followed by a bison fillet and the grilled beef tenderloin. Raclette potato gratin, grilled asparagus and roasted forest mushrooms rounded out our feast. The warm croissant bread pudding with brown sugar whisky sauce and the lemon ice box pie tart are well worth saving some room for at the end of the meal. Finally, touring through the many rooms of the lodge and gardens afterwards was a wonderful way to end our stay. read more

No official dress code that I could determine, but a smart casual might be a wise guideline.
How is the parking? Is is valet or self park?
There's a valet out front. Dont know if there's a self parking option.
Is the outdoor area too cold in December?
Not really, and you can always ask to be seated near heat lamps
Is there a dress code? Son and I are dressed nice, we just are not in shirts with collars
Smart casual- we wore jeans, nice shirts and shoes.
Are there stairs to get inside and to a table? Asking for a disabled person with a walker...
No they have ramps. You should be fine!
Is this place 3 yr old kid friendly? More so at lunch vs dinner? Or not really?
