I went to Millie's Kitchen & Cocktails on a Saturday morning for brunch with my wife and our toddler. Millie's is a popular neighborhood seafood restaurant in Houston's Oak Forest area, known for Southern and coastal-inspired dishes, craft cocktails, and being genuinely family-friendly. They offer both indoor and outdoor seating, including patios and a dedicated play area for kids, which already sets them apart. They have private parking spots out front and a large outdoor patio facing the street. We walked in without a reservation and were seated right away. They brought out a high-chair for our son immediately. Inside, the restaurant was busy, but it was a colder morning so the front patio wasn't being used much. They also have a separate backyard patio with a turfed, enclosed area where kids can safely play, which is a huge plus for families. We ordered from the brunch menu. [BRUNCH] +Lobster Roll for $38 - Maine lobster poached in butter, served in a brioche-style lobster bun with fries. My wife ordered this with fries, and I ordered the same dish with a Caesar salad. This lobster roll was excellent. They served the lobster folded into thick Texas toast and brought extra butter on the side. Easily one of the best lobster rolls I've had. It's definitely pricey, but absolutely worth it as an occasional splurge. The fries and salad were good, but the lobster roll completely stole the show. - 5/5 [KID'S MENU] +Basket of Fried Shrimp for $7 - Served with fries or fruit. My son didn't eat much of the shrimp, but I thought it was solid. He ate all the fruit. He had already eaten at home, so hunger may have been a factor. For the price, this was perfectly fine. - 4/5 Overall, Millie's Kitchen & Cocktails really impressed me. The lobster roll alone is worth returning for, and now that I've seen how seafood-forward the menu is, I'm excited to try more dishes on future visits. Add in the family-friendly setup, outdoor play space, and smooth service, and this is a place I'll gladly come back to for brunch (and more)! read more

We have been here twice and we have LOVED the food! Service is always fantastic we went for our anniversary and my girlfriend was given one of the best dirty martini's she has ever had. Ambiance is great inside and out we have sat in both and we were able to hold a conversation and hear each other. A random find for Saturday lunch and a good one at that! We didn't know what to order so we just ordered a bunch of random stuff between the 3 of us to split. Cool ranch chips with roasted vegetable queso - 10 out of 10, the chips were delicious and the queso was good too. Shrimp cocktail was basic but good Wedge salad with shrimp, delicious and good dressing. Seared branzino was flaky and delicious, but will try grilled next time. The mashed potatoes were good and most of the vegetables. We got the creme brûlée but wasn't a big fan , the custard was a bit thick and not smooth. I would opt for something else next time. Will definitely go back to try more things as well. I think only 2 ppl were working but service was still good and we felt bad that every thing was on them. read more

I realllllly wanted to love this place because I love the space and location. the interior is super cute but the weather has been so nice lately, we opted for outdoor seating. we also had our dog with us. we ordered mixed fruit infused prosecco to share. for the price, it felt like it was all fruit and no prosecco. they were quite generous with the fruit, none the less. 2 of us ordered bloody marys and they both were made differently. one was super salty with a gazillion capers and the other was salty with no capers. for food orders, we ordered: -bbq shrimp and crab was a huge bust. it tasted like ALL hot sauce and definitely not like new orleans or bbq shrimp like it was described (did I mention i'm from nola?!) -the burger bowl-- our chief complaint was the burger patty was tiny. nothing special about it -a bowl of gumbo but that too lacked protein but the flavor was good -hash brunch dish which had mainly hasbrowns with again, little protein -scallop and grits, had tons of vegetables and not enough grits but flavor was surprisingly delicious. scallops were different but were a little burnt but was ok. food took long and they didn't seem too busy. overall, I rate Millie's 3 stars. not sure if we will try again as the bill was close to $250 and service and food was just mediocre read more

What an amazing find. It doesn't look like a restaurant from the road, but inside it is so cute. I wanted to give it a 5 star but a couple things fell short. I'm sure the manager could discuss those with staff, but I review what we see. First of all Food was amazing. The menu items had some different choices than we are used to and we were thrilled. Our service was great. Everyone helped each other and all were willing to accommodate even if was not their section. The ambiance def family friendly and has outdoor dining and a small play area for toddlers, not really set up for older kids. Please give this place a try and don't judge a restaurant by the exterior. We would have missed a great find if we had kept driving. Ok. Now for the things that were negative in our book. Serving soft drinks in the can. Men's bathroom was completely out of soap. Limited Parking so they use a valet. We did not know ahead of time to bring cash for a tip. A couple of coworkers had recommended this spot for lunch and I finally got to check it out the other day. They've got a great lunch special! $20 for an appetizer and an entree from a pretty solid list of options. As soon as I saw lobster hush puppies on the app list, I had to try them. Did they taste like lobster? Not really. Were they still delicious? Definitely. For my main dish I took my coworkers' advice and got the hamburger bowl. Its basically a deconstructed burger without the bun, served with fries, queso, and a fried egg on top. I didn't read the full description beforehand and thought I was ordering something on the healthier side... turns out it's smothered in queso, so not exactly a "light lunch," but no regrets. The burger patty was well-seasoned, the fries were my favorite part, and the whole mix together was so good. Heads up: the portion was huge. Normally that would mean leftovers for the next day but this isn't the kind of meal that reheats well so come hungry if you're ordering this! Service was super fast which is perfect for a lunch break. There was plenty of parking when we went at around 12pm on a Friday. You can choose indoor or outdoor seating which is always a plus. Ordered off the Eat, Drink, HTX menu. This is basically the little sister of Houston Restaurants Week. Brunch and lunch are $15. Dinner is $25 for an appetizer and an entree. Our table got wedge salads and Caesar salads. Reliably good. Service was also very good. For dinner, we all got Gulf Red Snapper. Blackened. Grilled. Seared. The only prep we missed was fried. The blackened was the best of the three. Served with creamy mashed potatoes and steamed carrots and Brussels sprout, it was really a nice special. Next time, I would not get seared. The interior is so cute. Patio seating is available when the weather is nice. Limited parking, but they have complimentary valet available. A nice local spot for dinner with friends. read more

My wife and I have been to Millies Kitchen several times and the food has always been good. We stopped in to today for lunch and we had a very poor experience. She ordered the chicken marsala and it was extremely salty, to the point it was un edible. When we informed the waiter about it he said he would inform someone about the dish. When he returned he said that there was nothing that could be done about it. No manager came out to apologize or to offer to remake the dish...nothing! Instead we asked for to go boxes and payed our tab. We will not be returning to Millies again and informing our friends in Oak Forest of our poor experience with sad customer service as well as non existent management. read more

A charming Oak Forest neighborhood restaurant featuring a large covered patio up front, moderately sized indoor dining area with a private room and covered patio out back with a playground for the kiddos. This has become a go-to lunch spot for us. They have a two course lunch menu that features many of the entrees and starters from the main menu. The gumbo is good, smoked redfish dip is great and calamari good with a cornmeal (?) breading. The lobster bisque is my favorite. Fish and chips is a single fillet that is huge. The Texas Rueben is a clever take on the classic sandwich. My favorite is the Texan Lost in Philly - an excellent version of the Philly cheesesteak. Tried this place for brunch a few weeks ago and was looking forward to coming back and checking out dinner. Definitely didn't disappoint. We started with the grilled oysters that had really good flavor and a bowl of lobster bisque. For entree I had the shrimp and scallops over cheesy grits. I was looking for a good option to grab lunch with my mom that was pet friendly so that I can bring her grand dog. I love the outdoor seating is spacious and covered so there's plenty of seating options and there is a separate patio in the back for families with children. Our server greeted us immediately upon sitting down as we were the first party to get there. We opted to do their lunch special for $20 we both had lobster bisque, which was really good and had plenty of lobster meat in it. For entrées, I had the spicy Nashville chicken sandwich I was not a fan of the mayo I asked for no mayo, but it was still put on my sandwich. I just scraped it off and dipped it in ranch instead, the sandwich was not spicy at all in my opinion but had a nice crisp to it. We both ordered a glass of rosé I love when restaurants offer a full pour for wine instead of a half you get the most bang for your buck. It was also happy hour all day when we went on a Monday. Took a large group for lunch on Friday and the whole experience was top rated. The restaurant was beautiful & eclectic. The service was impeccable. The food was absolutely delicious and location was close to the Heights, so easy to reach from various suburbs. It is rare that everyone is truly impressed with the restaurant choice, but Millie's managed to do that. Luis and Jared were an absolute pleasure to work with. Definitely will be back again. I came the first time for HRW brunch. This time I came for HRW dinner menu. Inside was very cold so we decided to sit outside on the patio. For starters I had the clam chowder and smoked fish dip. The chowder was really chunky, and creamy. I loved it! I also enjoyed the fish dip as well. I tried the mussels in a white wine, garlic cream sauce my husband ordered and the flavor was on point with the sauce. For my entree, I ordered the Scallops & Shrimp w/ grits. The sauce was phenomenal and I really liked the cheesy grits. My critique is that the dishes came out too fast. I still was working on my first two courses and the entree came out fast. So it was sitting getting cold as I'm finishing my appetizers. For my dessert, I tried the bread pudding. It was thinly sliced and a little on the dry side. My husband "slice of cake" came out and looked like it was already a piece of cake that someone already ate. They cut the cake so sloppy and crumbly. We thought it was a joke when it came out thinking the waiter just sat a plate down from another table for a minute. Hubby was not happy with the blackened grouper he ordered initially. I've only been once but liked it immensely. We each had the two course Lunch Rush special. Companion had the wedge salad and Chicken Picata [sic], and she said both were good. I had the Lobster Bisque and Fish and Chips. Both were very good. It was a bit late for lunch so it wasn't busy at all, but the service was great. They left the water carafe which was appreciated. Went for the pimento cheese and shrimp poboy. The pimento cheese was nice and the house made pickles cut through the fat in the cheese. While a smaller portion for the menu it was still plenty. The poboy was good - Barry large shrimp but the breading had a hart time staying on. Sauce was good. This was a nice find while driving through the neighborhood. Parking is valet only though you can find a space on your own nearby. It's housed in an old gas station and the staff wear shirts that are a tribute to its prior iteration. The cocktails are good and varied. The cold brewed old fashioned was delicious and the chocolate espresso martini was sweet and perhaps best as a dessert. We had the lobster hushpuppies which felt a little pretentious and tasted fishy. I had the grotto platter, shrimp, scallops and cod. Nicely breaded, the shrimp and scallops were well done. If I were on death row, my last meal would be Millie's fried pickles. Millie's has risen in my life to the go-to brunch spot for my family in GOOF. They are not fussy. This is nice, down to earth, clean neighborhood service. They have a small dining room (~12 seated appx) for semi-private dining. Food is always really great eating. There is no expresso here. Just as an aside -- Historically, I'm not a huge fan of how coffee is sometimes served in styrofoam cups here (was an issue once back in April but haven't had the same issue the past two times I've gone). I appreciate how my request for a real mug is consistently abided by the staff, so just remember you can do that when eating at places insisting on still using styrofoam. read more

OK, so I wanted to support a local business on Small Business Weekend, so I decided to try Millie's in GOOF (that's Garden Oaks - Oak Forest, for those of you in Rio Linda). Short version: a very quaint locale with a lot of customers and pretty decent oysters, but be armed with patience and a good bottle of hot sauce. Long version: I was craving some comfort food after the annual Thanksgiving binge, so when I found out that Millie's had both a 2-course lunch and dollar oysters on Friday, I was on it like a duck on a bug. Here's where things go a little loco. I had no idea who my server was! One guy asks me for a drink order, then he disappears after delivering my water and I don't see him again until later. Then a Hispanic woman behind the bar asks me for my order. Uh, who dis be? So I order a dozen on the half shell. If there's one thing I don't like, it's not knowing who your server is. ZAP - one star gone. Now, the one good thing about this place - hence the 3 stars - are the oysters. Not only were they freshly shucked and fat, but also delivered with a ton of condiments. Pic attached as proof. But Millie's - do you know how to count? I only found 11 oysters on my plate. I asked for a dozen. After trying to wave down the clueless girl behind the bar for what seemed like an eternity, the first guy (who took my drink order) finally swings by and I explain the situation. After another wait, I finally get my twelfth oyster. Did a manager come by personally to apologize for the mishap? NO. Was I offered anything else? NO. ZAP - second star gone. The oysters were OK but could have been a little saltier. Given the fact that they were so fat, I would guess that their oyster supplier probably didn't let them mature in salt water. Let me explain: You see, in Southeast Texas and all across southern Louisiana, oyster beds are usually started in freshwater so that the oysters can grow quicker. Then, about a month or two before being harvested, they are transplanted into salt water so they can absorb the sodium and make for a delicious bivalve. Not these oysters. They were too flabby and sweet, which necessitated a good douse of Tabasco and lots of lemons. In this instance, size didn't mean anything to me. (Yes, I know what I said, bitches!) Anyway, the oysters were the high point of the lunch. I ordered the 2-course express lunch, which is a steal at $17. I decided on an oyster po'boy with the andouille gumbo. The gumbo was served piping hot, which was great. However, it was probably the blandest I've ever eaten. Plus, it too needed a lot of Tabasco to pick it up. This experience is rare for me - I've had gumbo from all over, many of which were infinitely better. Heck, even the Pappas people know how to make gumbo - and you already know how I feel about them. The oyster loaf was good. The oysters - 4 or 5 in all - were breaded in cornmeal and quick-fried, then served on a dressed bun like they do in New Orleans. Not bad! The accompanying salad was delicious, with the strawberry vinaigrette on the side. What really bothered me was the whole atmosphere here. As some of the previous Yelpers have noted, service is either hit or miss. And on top of that, you could tell who the regulars were from the way the bar staff was treating them. The real zinger was the first guy who took my drink order and then was AWOL for most of my lunch. He actually picked a fight with the Latina cantinera behind the bar, right in front of me! Uh, excuse me, but you should either take it to the back and straighten it out, or just not argue in front of the customers and let a manager sort it out. Speaking of which - where the heck WAS the manager? It seemed as if it was nothing but controlled chaos in the front of the house. Someone needs to step up and make sure that this restaurant is running like a well-oiled machine, because it sure wasn't the case when I was there. SMH... So - will I return? For the oysters, maybe. One of my favorite brunches this year. We found Millie's on Yelp while waiting to be served at another restaurant in the area for almost 45 min. Brunch was on our mind, and Millie's serves it 'til 3pm. Our table of four was immediately seated, and we started with a dozen East Coast oysters and calamari. The calamari was perfectly cooked and served with a zesty marinara and arugula dressed with lemon vinaigrette. Our table rounded out brunch with the caesar salad with shrimp, Creole omelette, salmon benedict, fish and chips, and pancakes (for our dessert!). Salmon benny is my go-to brunch order - I get it anytime it's available; and Millie's is my favorite in Houston - salmon was perfection, as was the hollandaise. My niece loved the fish and chips, but take note that the filets are thicccc; actually, all of the portions are large, so consider sharing. My sister's favorite was the side of grits with cajun cream sauce, which came with her creole omelette. There isn't much onsite parking, and what's available is valet. But you can find street parking. No complaints. It was an all around lovely brunch. We didn't try any desserts (other than the deeeeelish, homemade tasting pancakes), but would love to see beignets on the menu. :) read more

The portion size, the ratio of bread to lobster, the flavor, the texture, the everything. Absolute perfection. If anyone asked me how to describe a lobster roll. I would say to come here. I don't do repeats but this is definitely an exception. No Bueno calamari - too fried and thick batter, loved the arugula Salad it came with though. Brussels sprouts - good flavor but nothing special Hush puppies - didn't taste lobster and didn't like the sauce pairing. Not really sure what I was expecting here. Flounder - good lemon butter sauce. Great dish. Gumbo - salty and peppery. Great customer service. Decent timing of food to come out. Clean. When we got there, I noticed they had valet which was absolutely ridiculous because the parking area is so run down. So it just feels like an unnecessary money grab. Anyways, we parked a little further up the street and walked over. It was packed when we got there but we were told to sit wherever so we grabbed a table on the enclosed patio area. I wasn't taken in by the ambiance or much of anything but, I was willing to give it a try. Out of the RW menu, I got the lobster hushpuppies, and the crab cake Benedict, along with fries. I tried to get a flavored mimosa but they didn't have the one I wanted. Our food came very quick and it was disgustingggg!!!!! The hush puppies were so nasty, the crab cake Benedict was mediocre and the fries were horrific. Then, on top of that, my friend's pancake wasn't cooked all the way and her shrimp & grits had to be remade.
