What started off as a great breakfast morning turned south real quick. We were greeted and seated promptly, and our original server/waitress was a SAINT. Extremely nice, patient, and careful with our orders. She got our orders out but then wasn't seen for the rest of our meal. We got our food and my friend quickly realized that there were eggshells in her eggs. We brushed it off because it was just a small mistake--nothing to make a fuss about. When we finished eating we both sat there for 10-15 minutes before our plates were cleared, and waited for another 10 minutes for our bill to be dropped off. After our bill was dropped off we sat and waited for ANOTHER 10-15 minutes for someone to come pick up our cards. Eventually, we had to ask the nearest waitress if she could run our card only to have her LITERALLY slap the card off our table and snarled at us as she walked away. At this point my friend and I were shocked at how we've been neglected and practically stranded there waiting to be rung up but were even more offended when we saw that same waitress wave us goodbye from inside the kitchen as we got up to leave. The worst part is that we actually both love Rainbow and their menu but their lack of service during our meal was appalling. Not to mention all the other waitresses ignored us as we sat there waiting to be helped, and when we finally got the attention of one of their servers they responded with the rudest behavior I've ever experienced. If we didn't try and grab that other waitress' attention, I have no doubt that they would've left us sitting there waiting for who knows how long. read more

I really wanted to like this place. I would say the food was 4 stars and the service was 2. Me and my friend were meeting a couple of other friends here this morning, and for all the hype this place has, I expected more. Upon arrival we were not greeted so we just went to the patio to try and find our friends who had already arrived. They told our server that two more would be joining us but we had to get up and find menus on our own. She didn't give us water or place settings either. When our server finally stopped at our table, she was short, unfriendly, and seemed upset that the two of us joined the table. And I work in the food industry, trust me this place was not that busy. We all ordered another round of drinks (the funny bunny- pineapple, orange, and carrot juice with citrus infused vodka) the first one was amazing so that's why I ordered it again, but when we received the drinks they tasted so much different than the first one ordered. The inconsistency really bothered me. I wouldn't have ordered an $8 cocktail if I knew it would have been so weak and inconsistent. Almost tasted like there wasn't any alcohol in it. The food was great for the most part. The only thing is that the falafel in the falafel wrap didn't seem like it was fried, it was just the raw falafel paste. I was really looking forward to some crunchy delicious falafel in my wrap. Everybody else was very satisfied with their food though, the sweet potato burrito is AMAZING and the garden quesadilla was perfect with the house made tortilla. The service was just not up to par with the food and ambiance quality. If our server had been around more, I would have brought up my issues with her directly but she would only stop by our table for a second and didn't seem to care about our dining experience at all. This restaurant is a renovated bank...never would have known if I had not been told. Our group of 17 had reservations and a nice place outdoors to sit in some very nice September weather! Good choices of beer and wine for people, along with bread rolls. Gluten-free meal was available. I chose the chicken parmesan and quinoa salad and it was good. However, my friend had a salad with vegetables and they were way to heavy on the soy sauce so it was tooooo salty! Later in the meal the waitress thought of offering me some gluten-free bread....just the usual ....I have yet to find a gluten-free bread that knocks my socks off. I've been eating here for more than two decades, but just had the worst imaginable experience after being verbally assaulted twice by the "new" owners, who are the sons of the founders. Dan was clearing our table and asked how things were. I said that my friend and I had been disappointed that their menu had been decreased from many pages to only one. He got defensive, a response which shuts down communication and devalues true exchange. Then he asked what I liked that was missing from the menu, and I responded that I'm a disabled person who was already at the end of my capacity to function coherently for the day, so I couldn't answer his question at the moment. So what did he do? He fetched his brother Patrick to confront me yet again. WTF?! My friend had since returned to the table, and Dan just kept firing questions about, "What's wrong?" then dismissing anything we offered with, "Well, we are very busy, but we're not for everyone." If he truly wanted the feedback he was seeking, he'd have listened with true curiosity, not angry defensiveness. When I go out to eat, half of the excitement is indulging in something that's likely not as healthy as a home-cooked meal. I have very little trouble finding items on the menu that engage my sensibilities, but getting my salivary glands on board is a different story. Everything I've had here tastes like something that wouldn't be too hard to make at home. Ethnically labeled dishes don't quite hit their mark. The Israeli couscous soup just tastes like chicken noodle, the Thai peanut pasta is piled too high with plain steamed carrots and broccoli to register as Thai food, and the falafel sandwich was real pasty and served in a tortilla instead of pita or flatbread. They use so many fresh, healthy ingredients, it's a shame I don't enjoy their food more. Servers are professional and prices aren't too bad either. I'd love for them to kick their fat boy appeal up a notch and a half. read more

Absolute gem of a place.y boyfriend and I stopped in while on a long road trip and to find a place like this after you've been on the road and camping for almost a month is such a treat! The shade offers some protection from direct sun and the space between tables allows for conversations to be private. Most restaurants have patrons sitting shoulder to shoulder, but this is not the case at Rainbow. Service is always great without being intrusive. When it came time to order, I was having a hard time choosing. I ended up going with the Ali Baba; according to our server, it's been on the menu for over a decade. With staying power like that I figured I couldn't go wrong. It is a yummy deconstructed lettuce wrap that can include chicken, tempeh, or tofu! I chose chicken and it was seriously delicious. The fruit that came with it was very diverse and perfectly ripe. The two dipping sauces were excellent, but I must say the peanut one was my favorite. I had walked past this restaurant so many times in the evening so I was excited to finally head there for lunch. I was with three other people and we ordered an assortment of dishes. I had a falafel salad which was wonderful. My husband had the sweet potato burrito that was amazing as well but the star of the show was the cup of potato soup he got with his meal. It was so tasty with chunks of yummy veggies. It reminded us of my mom's soup (that's a huge compliment). One of our friends had the curry and another the ali baba. My friend and I stopped in for brunch after a workout class together. We chose this place because of the vegan options and reviews. I think that rainbow may be one of my new favorite stops. The staff were so friendly and kind, they offered us coffee while we waited for a table. Once seated our server was knowledgeable and helped me choose the best vegan dish and also explained substitutions that could be made. I ended up with the vegan French toast and it was amazing. Flavorful, filling and not too sweet. I love the fresh fruit and nuts that were topping it. They didn't drown it in sugar which I appreciate. I even jokingly told the manager that stopped by that it was so good it was hard to me to believe it was vegan. There were so many things I liked about Rainbow that I wish I could give them 3 1/2 stars. I think they deserve more than 3 for the cool patio, the unique menu and some of the best bacon ever. However, I don't feel right giving them 4 stars or more when breakfast took nearly two hours. Breakfast, I am talking pancakes and eggs. None of this stuff takes that long to cook. I actually started to think we had been forgotten. Maybe our ticket slipped under the fryer and was gone forever. Just as I was about to give up all hope of eating breakfast out it came. And it WAS really good. I loved their herbal tea, the hashbrowns were yummy and they have a really good and cheap kids menu. I don't know... maybe I was impatient because trying to keep the kids happy at a table for that long is a feat. Maybe because I had a hangover and wanted some eggs before lunchtime. I wanted to paint a warm, vibrant picture inspiring a cascade of memories of family meals seated at the table, where everyone smiled while sharing the details of their day. I wanted to create a scene of family happiness and love that centered around wholesome, healthy comfort food. This is what I feel when I eat at the Rainbow - it feels like you're eating a family meal in someone's home, possibly the home of your favorite Aunt who loves to cook, and makes your special dessert for when the family meal is finished and you help her with the dishes. But I just couldn't do it. Because, let's be real - while my core family with my husband and boys is relatively normal (and I say that loosely), we have the most jacked-up dysfunctional extended family ever, without Norman Rockwell moments like this. I write what I know. I write what is real. And what I was trying to write wasn't. My brain wouldn't let me put it out there for the world to read. Clearly, I'm not cut out as a writer of fiction. But, what I do know is that while you can't pick the family you are born into (or marry into), you can create your own extended family. Family is what you make of it. I've had many wonderful meals around Fort Collins with amazing friends who are always willing to join me for lunch. We eat with our kids in tow, creating a family meal of our own. This is what happens at the Rainbow. The Rainbow has been a Fort Collins landmark for 30 years, being the longest standing restaurant to offer fresh vegetarian and vegan dishes. There are options to add chicken for those who need some animal protein in every meal, so nobody is left out. It's a family-owned restaurant in a renovated house on Laurel, which makes you feel like you are actually eating in a family room (I guess you really are!), complete with a fireplace mantel decorated in old family pictures. There is also a beautiful patio, secluded from the hustle and bustle of traffic driving by on a busy college street, and reminiscent of backyard family summer picnics. Service at the Rainbow tends to be hit or miss. Sometimes we've had excellent service, other times - not so much. During this visit with friends, it was a bit off. We had a cluttered table with very little room to eat; we had to clear it out and place plates on the table behind us. It also took a very long time for us to receive our bill, and we were waiting for the kids to explode in impatient fidgets. All of us discussing this at the table thought it's something that you just brush off, because "Hey. It's the Rainbow." Surrounded by good friends, happy kids and fresh, healthy, home cooking in a unique and comfortable atmosphere, our lunch reminded me of those cliche family meal moments. I was thrilled to share it with people that I enjoy being around. Family really is what you make of it. And it helps to make it even more enjoyable being surrounded by delicious food. The Rainbow has been a vegetarian mainstay for a long time. Only two ala carte meat items on the brunch menu. Luckily with such a diverse menu, carnivore like myself had no trouble finding something to enjoy here. The patio is large, charming, and with the shrubs surrounding it, feels secluded. Very nice! Service was spotty. Literally, we waited 10 minutes for someone to arrive with water. It took 30 mins for food to arrive once ordered. After turning away from the place that was suggested to us due to the mass of people waiting for a table we yelped up Rainbow and had a seat within minutes of arriving. They have a nice menu with plenty of selections and nice sized portions. I had the special which was their potato pancakes with egss, bacon and a friuit salad. My boyfriend had the arnold (?) benedict that has avocado instead of canadian bacon and a light cheese sauce instead of hollandaise. Both were very yummy and enough for each of us to eat half of what we ordered and half of what the other person ordered. The wait staff was kind and helpful despite being a little bit distracted. We totally understood being that it WAS mothers day and the place WAS full of mom's and their doting famililes. Overall very happy with our breakfast that day. I remember this restaurant when it was located on Laurel east of College where the Thai Pepper is now. It was very rustic with picnic tables back then but with the popularity of this Fort Collins institution, it moved into a renovated house down the street. Before the move it was seen as more of a specialty restaurant but now is more mainstream. But the food hasn't suffered at all taken to this new level. I no longer live in FoCo but I always go back when I visit because I am never disappointed. I love the tempeh stir fries, the salads and the fruit plate is massive. Seriously, they must have a dedicated fruit cutter with how much you get and the presentation. Most entrees have a choice of a tofu/tempeh or chicken so carnivores can have their fill too. And they are served with salads and bread knots. I recommend the miso dressing. They have a kids menu and hand out coloring pages and crayons while you wait. The last waitress we had was very sweet and so good with the kids. She must have been a mom because she knew how to serve the drinks (NOT in glass) and made sure they had enough coloring pages and knew exactly what I meant when I said my youngest did not want the sauce on her pasta, just bring out a big side of parmesan cheese. She knew *exactly* what I was talking about. And her interaction with them was very nurturing which is a nice change from many wait staff who probably cringe when they see kids seated in their sections. (probably for good reason though) The wait time for food varies. It doesn't seem to depend on size of the crowd either, but if you get an entree, problem solved. Your salad and bread come out quickly. They have a decent selection of microbrews as well. The patio is a nice addition and a great place to enjoy a meal with friends and family. Enjoy! read more

I've taken both friends and family here and they stuff themselves, because the food is too good to stop eating. I'm vegetarian and have vegan friends and we all love going to this place. Plus the atmosphere is so homey (because it's literally a house turned into a restaurant). The only reason for this not being five stars is that the wait staff needs to be better trained, particularly in refilling water and general smiling. It's been a problem every time I go here. The quinoa, tofu, and tempeh round out the rather hippie set of offerings. Benedicts, Tex-Mex style breakfasts, and omelettes are the go-to, as with any eatery, but the unique takes on these items, studded with certain "powerfoods", afford you the breakfast of champions. The thing with Rainbow is not so much about the food other than to navigate around their peculiar business hours. I have even tried to go there once when they said they were open but no one was there. On the food level it is pretty good other than the way they cooked their tempeh is a lot to be desired. It is squishy and tastes a bit funny when tempeh should have a hard shell. I recommend going to Tasty Harmony the hours work around your schedule not theirs. I can respect and 100% agree with supporting local business but what happens when it is not great and they are not even open to service their local clientele? read more
