    Liwetan Platter
    Holli G.

Such a unique and delicious meal with fabulous service! The Liwetan platter was amazing and full of unique takes on things I've had before and things I've never even heard of. Our waitress was extremely knowledgeable and explained everything on the plate. She also was willing to answer any questions we had. The restaurant decor was adorable and inviting as well! It's a small space so it felt intimate which I thought was a good thing.

We made reservations for the Liwetan on my husband's birthday and had an absolutely delightful experience! The food is served on a basket lined with banana leaves. You can choose to have at it with your bare hands or use silverware - we chose to do the former as is the tradition. They do a good job explaining each item on the basket - which is quite a lot! We couldn't finish all of it but glad they provided boxes to take the leftovers home as I didn't want to waste any of it. At first, it may seem slightly expensive at $100 pp (as of Dec 2024) excluding the tip but it was totally worth it. The seafood and meat was delicious, the basket had many sauces each with a different flavor profile and it had a bunch of tropical fruits as well. Their bathroom is very spacious, they have a chalkboard where you can write your thoughts (maybe give them some compliments), there is a chest of drawers, filled with Indonesian candies (coffee, cappuccino, coconut) and useful toiletries that every bathroom should have. It is perfect to celebrate a date or a special occasion and I would absolutely come back for the Liwetan again.

One of the most special meals and experiences I've had in Philly to date. I contacted the restaurant early about allergies and they accommodated extremely well. The ambiance is tropical, bright, upscale, and fun. This is a two-person establishment, with the chef and her partner serving, which creates for an elevated and intimate experience. Every dish was bright, flavorful, and outstanding. I especially loved the creativity when it came to the Balinese salad and the beef rendang was out of this world. The owners came and sat with us and talked about the meal for a bit after, which really made this stand out. I'm shocked this isn't as well known. It clearly is one of my favorite dining experiences to date - and BYOB!!!!!

As a picky eater I was really on the edge about a pre-fix menu, especially one that was more seafood forward. But I stuck with it and I am so glad! The space itself is super cute, and the hostess was amazing, she put me at ease and was happy to switch my first course which was too seafood forward to a vegan alternative. My favorite course were the satay that were served on lemongrass sticks and the chicken with potato's were amazing. All in all a great BYOB experience! Go try and support our AAPI community!

Rice & Sambal is a new pop up/catering/private dinner operation from Diana Widjojo of Hardena fame. You may remember her #notapizza boxes during the pandemic filled to the brim with delicious Indonesian food - noodles, crabs, veggies, satay, anything goes in the pizza box (except pizza). She's been selling those out of Daankbar and doing a 7 course Rijsttafel dinner there as well this August. I was able to get a seat for the Rijsttafel and it was amazing! She was also doing vegan nights but we opted for the meat. We started the meal with 3 sambals and tapioca chips, absolutely loved the rendang bitterballen and the drank up all the broth after polishing off the mussels and clams. Our favorite dish was the pork belly followed closely by the chicken, but even the rice (flavored with coconut, pandan, lemongrass, and galangal) was delicious. It was also the prettiest kangkung I've ever seen! It's so refreshing and fun to have a fancy coursed out high end Indonesian meal with one beautiful and delicious dish after another, rather than the casual atmosphere of Hardena we're used to. The neon sign, menu, Indonesian decorations, and Indonesia coffee candy in the bathroom really added a special touch to Dankbaar. She's also popped up at Hale and True so check her Instagram for details. Can't wait to see where Rice & Sambal pops up next and highly recommend if you need catering!

It is buffet style, so all of the dishes are laid out on a food line and you order at the counter. I highly recommend the Nasi Padang ($14) as it was SO much food and everything was very delicious. The kale was cooked in coconut milk which was aromatic, creamy, and slightly spicy, but still retains that slightly bitter edge. The egg is coated in sambal which is definitely spicy but pairs so well with the rice. The beef was tender and fall apart and the sauce was thick and so flavorful. The chicken was also fall apart soft. The highlight of the dish was getting to eat each component with the coconut rice. The coconut rice is some of the best I've ever had!! It's hard to explain what it tastes like but it's the perfect blend of coconut, salty, sweet, and very savory. I would say it's much more traditional tasting compared to Sky Cafe (another popular Indonesian spot). They take cash/venmo/zelle (I think)! It is incredibly worth it for the price. Definitely want to support a smaller, local business!

There's not a lot of places, especially in LA area that have savory Martabak, but this one nails it. I was only doing day trip to Philly so I was able to place a pick up order and they were very nice to have me pick up way after the opening hours because I was running late. Just keep in mind that they made it fresh so it's better to call couple hours in advance for them to make your order. I would say 3 to 4 hours before. They are combined store with other type of food like fried chicken and have a similar name so I can't wait to come back to Philly and try those fried chicken! When I went there to pick up my order, it was raining, but there were people waiting for that chicken orders. The auntie is also very nice. Their sign and color is very catchy so it's hard to miss. Vibe is very homie as well.

While the food was excellent, a warmer and more welcoming attitude would have made the overall experience even better.

Their popular Smashed Chicken Rice was spicy but good spicy that my friend couldn't stop eating! They had a sweet soy sauce on the table which helped with the spice. For dessert we got the Coconut Banana Ice, which was unique and not overly sweet. Originally wanted to get the Green Banana Ice but they were out. The service so good that we tipped them extraaa. I was WOWED by the shrimp with lady fingers (okra), seamless service (reminiscent of a well-oiled machine), and an unexpectedly large interior. --- I dined as a party of two for lunch on Sunday. When we first entered, we were shocked at just how large the interior of Banana Leaf was as compared to the exterior. It is also decorated very fun inside. We ordered the mama's chicken, shrimp with lady fingers, and homemade roti canai. Just a note that the most updated menu is online instead of the photos here. (Also rice is not included with the entrées, but needs to be ordered separately.) (1) Shrimp with Lady Fingers- I would come back for just this again and again. It was not too salty, and it was very flavorful (just the right amount of fishy), and the okra was cooked just perfectly. I am a little bias as an okra fan, but I LOVED this dish. My only issue is that the shrimp wasn't deveined. (2) Homemade Roti Canai- The roti was very flaky and had an excellent texture. I guess it's no surprise that it's the biggest thing advertised on the menu. The curry was pretty standard that came with it. It was just a little strange to me that the roti canai was completely cold when it came out. (3) Mama's Chicken- The chicken was dry for us, probably as a result of the smaller pieces being fried. Overall, it was pretty OK, but we wouldn't order this again. The service was excellent- food was quick to come out & anytime we finished a dish, needed water, or needed the check, the servers were at the table before we had to say anything. Totally streamlined!
