I tried the garlic pork with mild spicy. I got extra bamboo for $3, which seems insanely pricey to me. The pork was well-cooked and the broth is tasty, if a little salty. In short, I would recommend this shop. As usual, let me start with the disadvantages. First of all, it's pricey. Sure, it's a Japanese restruant, I kind of know about that, but it's still pricey. Second, even though Japanese doesn't really have a lot of choice for food, but it's really limited to ramen here. Basicly, you got about fore choice. As for the spicies, you also got four and only four choices. Soy saurce, miso, etc. You will have slightly more choices for the dinner, but again, you are looking at basicly raw food or fried chiken or teryyaki. What really surprised me was that, you can also also orde a bowl of rice. Don't get me wrong, I eat rice everyday, but eating ramen with rice? Never! That's like the worst combination. It's like fried potato with potato! Ok, let me discuss the advantages of this ramen shop. It's a tiny shop, but it's designed to leave enough room for both costumer and the shop attender. This place is baller. Quaint little joint where all they serve is ramen - and a few apps. When i first walked in - had to use the bathroom - and you have to walk through the kitchen - looking around - all i could see was that I was surrounded by awesomeness. My friends and I came here on a Sat night and the wait was long. We waited for at least 45 mins for our table. I've always wanted to try Ramen Dojo because I've heard about it a few times. It was definitely worth the wait. There's not a lot of different soup base you can chose from but I like how you can customize your ramen. You can chose from Spicy garlic pork, soybean (miso), or soy sauce soup base. Next you chose how spicy you wanted. I had mild and it was pretty spicy. So if you're not really into spicy food, I would stick with non spicy or mild. It comes with quail egg (1), roasted pork (2 slices), veggie, green onion, and fried garlic. You can always add more toppings for more. I think the soup base was average but the ramen noodle was what made it delicious. It's very different from all the other Ramen places out there. The things that I didn't like was the parking situation. I'm really spoiled with private lots when it's outside of SF and they didn't have one so it's straight street parking and I wasn't exactly thrilled. It's located by a quieter side of San Mateo so it's little bit by residential area, so it's not likely that ppl are gonna move their cars much...which meant parking is really by luck. Then, there's also the wait. When I went, it was like a 30-40 mins wait, it was such a small place that ppl were spilling out of it. It doesn't make it fun when it was a cold night too. I've goteen the GARLIC PORK RAMEN... mild or medium spicy. That's all I can really handle. It's pretty spicy if you beyond mild. You can always add extra toppings for extra charge, but well worth it. The both is literally the BEST... Don't come here if you're a fan of the soft boiled egg -they don't do it as well as Orenchi does. The pork is delicious though -and I'm not even a fan of pork. The noodles are perfection. Wavy as they should be. I'm in love with this place and I make an effort to come here when I'm visiting California. The portions are decent. I really like this ramen spot in San Mateo, and I want to say that I still like it... But I went there recently and the quality has gone down a bit. Or maybe it's because I was spoiled by the most amazing ramen ever in Hong Kong that I waited over an hour for in the heat and risk of a level 8 typhoon striking..? Not sure, but something didn't feel right. Two things: 1) The slices of pork became chunks of pork, which make it stringy. It was also missing the fat, which contains most of the flavor! Also, it was slightly over-charred (aka burnt); 2) The broth was contaminated by tiny black specs from the char on the pork, which gave it a slightly bitter aftertaste. The spicy garlic pork ramen is very good and the regular spicy is actually spicy (Japanese people don't really eat spicy foods, besides wasabi). The noodles were the perfect texture, broth was flavorful, and the toppings were all really good. I came back another time around 12pm on a weekend and the amount of broth they gave me was half of the bowl! It barely covered all of the noodles. If you're trying to ration the broth at the beginning of the day, please make more in advance so something like this doesn't happen. I don't think it's worth the wait anymore. read more
