Quick and tasty counter for hot rice bowls and bentos, reasonably priced! Pros: Quick service, broad menu of curry bowls, Yakiniku beef, teriyakis, yaki udon or soba, ... lots to love Food was flavorful and yummy - we had the unagi bento, a beef / egg bowl, yakiudon, and a katsu curry Cons: Yaki udon was good but a little too heavily sauced No seating / pickup only Parking can be rough here given how busy downtown is

Need a quick, no-fuss lunch or dinner? This is the spot. They've got bento boxes, bowls, and udon ready to save you from hanger. Some folks say the portions have shrunk, but my go-to -- the beef teriyaki bowl -- still feels fair and fills me up just fine. Flavor's great, service is friendly, and you can be in and out without it eating up your whole afternoon. Austin Yee

    Tonkatsu chicken

Ben here a few times. I usually get the tonkatsu chicken and take it over to the park. For $15, it's a good amount of food and it's ready quickly. No complaints about the service or ambience--it's a corner spot with a quick in-and-out system. Recommended if you need a quick but filling bite on the go.

This bento shop offers incredibly affordable prices, with most meals costing no more than $15 after tax. The portions are generous, the food is delicious, and the service is excellent. In an era where a single lunch often exceeds $25, finding such a reasonably priced option is truly rare. The shop has limited space and operates entirely on a To-Go model, which helps cut down on rental costs. The staff is exceptionally friendly, providing fast and attentive service even during busy hours. Highly recommended for office workers and families looking for a tasty meal to take home--both the quality of the food and the service make every dollar spent here well worth it.

Used to love this place but the katsu portion size has decreased so much. Absolutely ridiculous and frustrating. 2 stars because maybe it was a one off instance... Shrinkflation

    Salmon Bento with teriyaki sauce
    Kristi I.

I tried the Salmon Bento with teriyaki sauce. In the current world of shrinkflation, I was shocked by the generous portion of salmon. The teriyaki sauce was a nice balance of sweet and savory. I liked the side of pasta salad, but the green salad's dressing tasted watered down. When I went during Sunday dinnertime, they were so busy that they couldn't pick up the constantly ringing phone. This place is also takeout only and doesn't have a seating area. Street parking can be tough in downtown San Mateo, but it's right next to the Central Garage.

    Broccoli salad with light dressing

I walked right by it because it's in a little unassuming corner spot with neon signs advertising BENTO BOX HOT FOOD TAKE OUT and OPEN, but the actual restaurant sign is tiny, so don't blink. The menus are on large lit screens worn pics and description. I got the katsu chicken curry and it was piping hot and delicious, and had a little smattering of Japanese pickles that really went well to cut the richness of the curry. The chicken was still crunchy and not fresh at all. There were one or two chunks of carrot and potato, but chicken and barely spiced sauce was the star here. In ordered a broccoli salad, because I heard veggies are good for you. They asked dressing on top or on the side. I said on top but light, and it was perfect. A healthy amount of perfectly done broccoli, still slightly crunchy and bright green, was dressed in a slightly sweet dressing that didn't mask the taste of fresh broccoli. This is a take out spot so there aren't tables (nor table service), but there are public benches right outside. Food was fast, really well priced, generous in proportion, and yummy.

    Gyoza
    Todd N.

Inspired by Kenji Lopez-Alt -- I was on the search for Seattle esque teriyaki. I got chicken teriyaki and gyoza here. Gyoza I could live without. THE CHICKEN THOUGH? THE CHICKEN THOUGH?????? Saucy, juicy, perfect chew, slightly cured/marinated for a long time flavor - I just think it needs a bit more char and it would be unstoppable. I'm definitely coming back. The service is friendly and quick. You're in, out, and enjoying your large portion of teriyaki at the beautiful park nearby.

Same order , got different portion sizes.
    Elena E.

The food here is good but be aware that from time to time you get significantly different portion sizes but they charge you the same . This happened to me a few times. Next time I will open the box right then and there to check ! This is not right!

    Korean-Style BBQ Chicken
    Lisa C.

My favorite Chicken Teriyaki takeout in the Bay Area. The only crispy skin Chicken Teriyaki I know of. Make sure to try it while the edges are still crispy. Hubby's favorite is the Korean Style BBQ Chicken. I would describe it as better than Vietnamese Five Spice Chicken. The dry parts are way better if you can wait hours till they are cold to touch. Then it's like eating jerky, but better. One thing to note is that this is a teeny weenie hole-in-the-wall, but you can wait outside and they will call your number with an intercom.

I used to come here all the time for bentos and always ordered the same thing. Chicken katsudon. Unfortunately today's was not good at all. The meat was so dry inside and I don't know if they accidentally gave me pork and I don't eat pork. Anyway I didn't finish it. The meat was hard and dry. Yuck. It used to be real chicken pieces. I don't know what happened. I haven't been here in over a year. Unfortunately- won't be returning.

Fast, fresh, and hot soup! Ordered veggie udon. Lots of veggies and noodles. The soup is delicious and hot. They also include egg in it too. Can't beat it. Nice street food style. No seating so you're going to need to stand and eat. Or sit own the public benches.

Would I be able to order a medium tray of chicken katsu from Kaz? I need it for 05/31 at 1pm. anyone know the price?

What is the difference between kaz grill and sozai corner? is it just two names for the same place?

Sozai is inside Suriki Supermarket. They make all the prepared food for the store (you can also preorder food from them). Kaz is the takeout spot on the corner, next to Suruki and not affiliated with them.

Can you call to preorder? I tried the phone number and it says the call could not go through

Some personal thoughts: If you want something light, or try to order for the elders, wagyu aburasoba is a better choice, since the meat is more lean and yogurt sauce help balance the richness. Homura aburasoba is also great, but minced pork is a bit fatty, and traditional sauce is also rich, so I normally find it hard to finish a bowl because I'm too full. Nevertheless, I don't say it's not great, do not order. What I meant is that if you have a preference for light food (like me), hate something too oily/ greasy or afraid of fat, wagyu aburasoba is always a better choice!

The food comes out fairly quickly by the time you get to your seat. The problem is near the end, but patience is key. They appear understaffed since the space is crowded (full seats!). The food is delicious. The noodles are perfectly cooked. The sauce is wonderfully done (spicy is mild to me). I think it was a good call not to have an appetizer since the portion on the bowl was just right to fill you up. I am curious on the appetizers next time. I saw other tables having them and they looked great.
