Love going to Kaz anytime I have an excuse to be in the peninsula. It's only a to-go place, but oh so comforting! I always get the Katsu curry rice bowl and chicken teriyaki rice bowl. They are generous portions and absolutely delicious. Location is also great and you can grab a drink at Suruki market next door and eat at the open tables in B street that are closed to cars

Could always smell the goodness when passing by this place & finally got to try it out! It's a no seating establishment. Just order and go. I always see a line no matter what time of day. Tried out their famous Chicken Curry with fried shrimp, and it's such comfort food! The bowl was a perfect portion. I can't wait to try more of what they offer.

Quick and tasty counter for hot rice bowls and bentos, reasonably priced! Pros: Quick service, broad menu of curry bowls, Yakiniku beef, teriyakis, yaki udon or soba, ... lots to love Food was flavorful and yummy - we had the unagi bento, a beef / egg bowl, yakiudon, and a katsu curry Cons: Yaki udon was good but a little too heavily sauced No seating / pickup only Parking can be rough here given how busy downtown is

    Fried Ebi Bento Box

I've been eating here for years, and the food has never disappointed me until now. I always order the fried ebi, so I know exactly what to expect. Unfortunately, what I received this time wasn't even mediocre. The shrimp pieces were tiny, overcooked, and nothing like the shrimp they used to serve. I also chose not to eat the broccoli after I saw the cashier touch it with his bare hands after handling his cell phone, touching his face, and handling money. To make matters worse, I saw the cook take chicken out of a regular plastic bag that was sitting on the counter instead of being refrigerated. Has this place changed ownership? The quality and food handling seemed completely different from what I've experienced over the years. This used to be one of my top 10 favorite places to eat, and I truly loved the food here. Sadly, after this experience, I won't be coming back.

Need a quick, no-fuss lunch or dinner? This is the spot. They've got bento boxes, bowls, and udon ready to save you from hanger. Some folks say the portions have shrunk, but my go-to -- the beef teriyaki bowl -- still feels fair and fills me up just fine. Flavor's great, service is friendly, and you can be in and out without it eating up your whole afternoon. Austin Yee

This bento shop offers incredibly affordable prices, with most meals costing no more than $15 after tax. The portions are generous, the food is delicious, and the service is excellent. In an era where a single lunch often exceeds $25, finding such a reasonably priced option is truly rare. The shop has limited space and operates entirely on a To-Go model, which helps cut down on rental costs. The staff is exceptionally friendly, providing fast and attentive service even during busy hours. Highly recommended for office workers and families looking for a tasty meal to take home--both the quality of the food and the service make every dollar spent here well worth it.

Ben here a few times. I usually get the tonkatsu chicken and take it over to the park. For $15, it's a good amount of food and it's ready quickly. No complaints about the service or ambience--it's a corner spot with a quick in-and-out system. Recommended if you need a quick but filling bite on the go.

Used to love this place but the katsu portion size has decreased so much. Absolutely ridiculous and frustrating. 2 stars because maybe it was a one off instance... Shrinkflation

    Salmon Bento with teriyaki sauce
    Kristi I.

I tried the Salmon Bento with teriyaki sauce. In the current world of shrinkflation, I was shocked by the generous portion of salmon. The teriyaki sauce was a nice balance of sweet and savory. I liked the side of pasta salad, but the green salad's dressing tasted watered down. When I went during Sunday dinnertime, they were so busy that they couldn't pick up the constantly ringing phone. This place is also takeout only and doesn't have a seating area. Street parking can be tough in downtown San Mateo, but it's right next to the Central Garage.

    Broccoli salad with light dressing

I walked right by it because it's in a little unassuming corner spot with neon signs advertising BENTO BOX HOT FOOD TAKE OUT and OPEN, but the actual restaurant sign is tiny, so don't blink. The menus are on large lit screens worn pics and description. I got the katsu chicken curry and it was piping hot and delicious, and had a little smattering of Japanese pickles that really went well to cut the richness of the curry. The chicken was still crunchy and not fresh at all. There were one or two chunks of carrot and potato, but chicken and barely spiced sauce was the star here. In ordered a broccoli salad, because I heard veggies are good for you. They asked dressing on top or on the side. I said on top but light, and it was perfect. A healthy amount of perfectly done broccoli, still slightly crunchy and bright green, was dressed in a slightly sweet dressing that didn't mask the taste of fresh broccoli. This is a take out spot so there aren't tables (nor table service), but there are public benches right outside. Food was fast, really well priced, generous in proportion, and yummy.

    Gyoza
    Todd N.

Inspired by Kenji Lopez-Alt -- I was on the search for Seattle esque teriyaki. I got chicken teriyaki and gyoza here. Gyoza I could live without. THE CHICKEN THOUGH? THE CHICKEN THOUGH?????? Saucy, juicy, perfect chew, slightly cured/marinated for a long time flavor - I just think it needs a bit more char and it would be unstoppable. I'm definitely coming back. The service is friendly and quick. You're in, out, and enjoying your large portion of teriyaki at the beautiful park nearby.

    Korean-Style BBQ Chicken
    Lisa C.

My favorite Chicken Teriyaki takeout in the Bay Area. The only crispy skin Chicken Teriyaki I know of. Make sure to try it while the edges are still crispy. Hubby's favorite is the Korean Style BBQ Chicken. I would describe it as better than Vietnamese Five Spice Chicken. The dry parts are way better if you can wait hours till they are cold to touch. Then it's like eating jerky, but better. One thing to note is that this is a teeny weenie hole-in-the-wall, but you can wait outside and they will call your number with an intercom.

Same order , got different portion sizes.
    Elena E.

The food here is good but be aware that from time to time you get significantly different portion sizes but they charge you the same . This happened to me a few times. Next time I will open the box right then and there to check ! This is not right!

Would I be able to order a medium tray of chicken katsu from Kaz? I need it for 05/31 at 1pm. anyone know the price?

What is the difference between kaz grill and sozai corner? is it just two names for the same place?

Sozai is inside Suriki Supermarket. They make all the prepared food for the store (you can also preorder food from them). Kaz is the takeout spot on the corner, next to Suruki and not affiliated with them.

Can you call to preorder? I tried the phone number and it says the call could not go through

I ordered their #1 recommendation, the Homura Aburasoba, and immediately scarfed it down. Popping the perfectly runny egg yolk into the noodles was incredibly satisfying, and every bite was packed with rich, savory umami. The noodles themselves were thick, chewy, and had a great bite that held up well to the sauce. I also tried the Wagyu dish, but it arrived more cooked than it appeared in the photos, which made the texture and overall experience a bit underwhelming. The sauce also leaned on the creamier side, which isn't my favorite pairing with Wagyu, so I'd probably skip that one next time. That said, the Homura Aburasoba alone is worth coming back for and easily earns Kajiken a well-deserved 5/5.

This guy likes to let the hype die down before trying the latest "cool place". Kajiken specializes in Arubasoba, which is like a dry ramen. I haven't had it here in the U.S., but tried it in Tokyo and loved it. I was excited to learn that is what Kajiken was all about. I tried their signature dish Homura Aburasoba with two poached eggs. It was absolutely fantastic. I think I might have found a solid challenger to my favorite ramen place in the downtown. This dish was an incredible blend of soba noodles, spicy minced pork, fresh vegatables and egg. Wow. I am a huge fan. Just thinking about it now makes me want to jump in MINI and race down to them Italian Job-style. I also had the ponzu karaage and it too was simple delicious. The ponzu gave the wonderful fried chicken an added zip. Oh, yeah. Service was good and our service kept refilling out water carafe, which as appreciated. I needed it cool down the spiciness of the soba. Okay, time for the iPhone snaps.

There was an employee making the udon fresh in-house with a machine in a large-windowed room along the hallway to the bathroom. Service was great. Our waiter was friendly and went through the menu thoroughly along with what's popular here and what he personally recommended. He also refilled our waters without prompting. Our food arrived quickly after we ordered. Karaage - 6 large pieces of moist, juicy, well-seasoned chicken. The batter was crispy and not oily. I would've liked there to be a little more dipping sauce. I would get this again. Tonkotsu udon deluxe - chashu was tender, broth was perfectly pork-bone-milky, udon had a nice chewy al dente texture, egg was perfectly cooked with that gelatinous yolk and well-marinated. The texture of the kakuni (pork belly) was a bit too dry/well-done for my taste, so I think I'll just get the regular tonkotsu next time. Niku udon - larger bowl/portion than the tonkotsu, even though both were regular size. The fish broth was nicely blight, udon was the same great al dente texture as the one in tonkotsu dish, beef was not chewy. Mentai cream sauce udon - akin to a Japanese carbonara pasta, the sauce was very garlicky and had a kick of spice from the spicy cod roe. All of the elements came together well, from the crispy tempura bits, to the richness of the sauce, to the crunch from the green onions. In terms of flavor this was my favorite dish out of the 3. This dish can get a bit heavy as you keep eating, so I would recommend you take some home for another meal or split with someone else. All 3 noodle dishes were solidly good, so I don't think you can go wrong! My father couldn't name a favorite dish; he just says it depends on what you're in the mood for. My mother thinks everything was a bit too salty for her taste, though; she would personally rank the niku udon the best for the value and salt content and non-heaviness, followed by the mentai cream udon, and then tonkotsu last. She said she would rate this place 4.5/5. Overall, I would definitely return again to try other dishes, like the curry udon that my waiter highly endorsed, or one of the set meals (like the unagi rice bowl with tempura and steamed veggies and mini udon).

Onigiri bites 9.5/10 - this surpassed my expectations! Crispy on the outside and soft inside. I've already recommended Sushi Maruyama to several coworkers and friends, and I can easily see it becoming a go-to spot for me.

This place is always packed! I tried it once before and didn't really enjoy it as much as I thought…read moreI would. Fast forward a couple of years and a friend and I decided to dine here since we were craving sushi. At a little before 6:00pm on a Sunday evening, we were told we could have a table if we could finish by 6:45pm due to the table being reserved at that time. We took on the challenge and accepted. We quickly glanced at the menu and decided to get the 8-pc chef's nigiri for $63. It also came with a egg castella and a slice of lemon cheesecake for dessert. The fish was freshly delicious and the nigiri had the perfect amount of meat to rice ratio. I truly enjoyed the lemon cheesecake as well. The only disappointment was not being able to savor our meal but we wanted to eat and give back the table when they needed it.
