BEWARE DO NOT ORDER LARGE ORDERS We had planned a baby shower and since we love the bentos from here, we wanted to provide our guests with their food. I called months in advance (baby shower was 5/30, I first called 3/10). I called them 3/10, 3/11, 3/13, 3/16, 3/17, 3/22, 5/27, and 5/29. I called in March to make the initial order of 20 chicken karaage, chicken teriyaki, etc. I explicitly called 5/27 and the day before the baby shower to make sure the order was in and we told them we will pick it up between 11-12pm. My husband drove 40 mins and arrived at 11:40. He calls me telling me the order is NOT ready. I was able to get in contact with the manager but he basically blamed me and his workers for his mistake. He claimed he called me to confirm the order multiple times. Tell me why I have not record of him calling me even once. He could tell his workers to let him know when I called again so he could talk to me, but he didn't care to do this. He told me that since I didn't pick up, he assumed that my order was cancelled. I called 5/27 and 5/29 to confirm the order. The person who picked up said "yup, everything is ready to go and we will have the food ready for you". He threw his employees under the bus by saying it was a "new cashier" and that he wasn't trained properly. Why was there a note for my order in the kitchen but no one bothered to cook it? Our baby shower had to start a full hour late because of their mistake, and the stress it caused me (I am 34 weeks pregnant) was horrible. He gave us a mere 10% discount and didn't really try to make the situation better. The manager is useless and does not take accountability whatsoever. I feel bad for the employees. read more

In ordered a broccoli salad, because I heard veggies are good for you. They asked dressing on top or on the side. I said on top but light, and it was perfect. A healthy amount of perfectly done broccoli, still slightly crunchy and bright green, was dressed in a slightly sweet dressing that didn't mask the taste of fresh broccoli. Consistent and perfectly cromulent - older son and I always get the teriyaki bowl, my younger son the chicken karaage lunch with rice, Mac salad and miso, and husband switches it up - this time a Korean style short rib bowl - everyone was happy with their food - except this time I was the least happy. My sons bowl of teriyaki chicken was nicely laid out sliced chicken breast that fit perfectly in the bowl, as if the non uniform ends were removed. Mine had an inordinate number of "burnt ends" as well as middle slices that we a little charred. I felt like I was given the "burnt ends bowl." This doesn't typically happen, so I'm still giving them 4 stars due to the consistency we've seen for many years. We will be back, and I'll be sure to request a less charred piece of chicken. I never write a bad review but this was horrible, I love this place and I've had amazing service but the last two times, I've had a terrible experience. I ordered a side of short ribs which they were out of but they charged me anyways, they did however end up refunding me days later. Today, I ordered a side of short ribs for $12.50 which came with 4 little pieces, I could've bought the short ribs at Trader Joe's for more bang for my buck. This is ridiculous. I went inside to show them, thinking this was a mistake and he said, yes it is 6 pieces for a Ala arte order ( this clearly was not 6 pieces and I would think 6 WHOLE pieces or at least full half pieces) not the bones. We were killing time in the San Mateo area, and the youngest member of our group was craving teriyaki (we're from Seattle, after all). The options were slim for the classic takeout/teri bento - we settled on Kaz simply for the convenience of its location. When we arrived, it appeared promising: a small operation with limited staff (one person manning the register/expediting, two people grilling/prepping the food), the smell of charred meats - I thought: this is going to be a taste of home. There was no wait to place an order, and no other people were hanging out in the vicinity waiting for orders... however: what we didn't know, but became evident after the first 20-25 minutes of our wait time elapsed, was that they had 20+ delivery orders that they were preparing ahead of ours. We didn't expect our food to jump the queue, but there was no communication whatsoever from the employees re: what was going on. Meanwhile 30-40 minutes elapsed, with us asking periodically "when do you think the ETA is?" Each time that question was asked, it was ignored. Straight up: no response whatsoever. Finally, after almost 45 minutes, one of the members of our party asked for a refund. Less than a minute after that the order was magically ready (we suspect that they just gave us someone else's order - ugh). The food itself was pretty underwhelming, especially for the price (we ordered 2 beef Teri bentos, and 1 Korean bbq chicken). Each "bento" featured a very modest portion of white rice, a handful of grilled protein (the beef was not marinated/pretty tasteless without the sauce), a sad scoop of Mac salad with surimi (fake crab), and a teensy pile of iceberg lettuce with a lone piece of miso broccoli perched on top. The sides of miso soup were so salty that they were inedible (I did appreciate the inclusion of wakame and tofu in it though). All told: close to $70 with tip, and so very not worth the wait. read more

Whenever I am in San Mateo, when on the way home to SF and not wanting to cook, this is my go-to place. I love the chicken karagge, which tastes fantastic and gives you a good portion.
