We wanted to try Harumi Sushi next door, but there was a one hour wait, so we decided to try Ramen Kagawa so that we didn't have to wait outside in the heat. There was no wait at Ramen Kagawa. The ramens were not great. In my bowl of Hokaido (missing a K in the menu by the way. It's Hokkaido) Miso Ramen, I had broth, noodles, soft boiled egg, cabbage (why?), chashu, corn, and about a tablespoon slice of butter. The noodle was undercooked. The corn was room temperature. The cabbage was really cold. The inside of the soft boiled egg and chashu was cold. The butter didn't even melt because the broth was luke warm. The server was explaining to me that they put the ramen together with ingredients that are premade, refrigerated, and put into the bowl. For the chashu, they shear it before it's put into the bowl, he said. I'm guessing the corn was room temperature because it wasn't refrigerated and was from a can that was at room temperature. We had three different bowls of ramen, and all were the same. It's one thing to not make the broth or the noodles in-house. I can understand Japanese restaurants that don't want to spend the effort in making the noodles. I can also understand if they don't want to make their broth, however, I will refuse to eat a bowl of ramen if they don't at least make their own broth. However, to put food together with premade ingredients and not even heat them up is pretty lazy and terrible. At least make it so your customers don't notice that you're cutting corners. The karaage was overcooked and dry. My guess is that they get overcooked because it's premade and being refrigerated (frozen maybe?), it takes longer to deep fry. They also don't make their gyoza. They buy them frozen, and heat them up. Google the term Kodawaru. If a Japanese restaurant is Japanese owned, they should be pridefully serving good food. What's the point if the food is terrible? After I spoke with the server about the ramem being cold, he gave us a 15% discount. I think he should have just taken the ramen off the ticket. I would not return, and I don't recommend you go. read more

The traditional tonkotsu ramen here tastes a little off. The broth was a bit too salty and the vegetables the bowl comes with aren't really the typical ones you'd expect from a Japanese ramen restaurant. Normally, you'd get some combination of garlic, woodear mushrooms, seaweed, bamboo, scallions, and bean sprouts. However, this restaurant provides cabbage, pickled ginger, and scallions. The flavor combination was strange and the ginger flavor dominated everything else. The pork also didn't seemed like it was slow-braised and seasoned like traditional Japanese chashu. The texture was somewhat dry, so I'd bet the pork was rapidly boiled. That being said, the ramen wasn't bad tasting per se, just not what I expected at all read more

I couldn't believe there would be a dedicated ramen joint in Phoenix. Being from Hawaii & going to Japan a bunch of times, I wasn't expecting much. But we were surprised at how good the experience was! They open at 5, which also starts the 2-hour Happy Hour! The Sapporo beer that comes with the three different appetizers is a single can, so we ordered the takoyaki & gyoza combos, to get beers for me & the wife. Both were tasty & enough to share with three of us. We also got several cold sake, which was half price. Son & I ordered the tonkotsu ramen, with added soft boiled egg. Very tasty! Noodles were great & veggies were generous. Wife did mostly "pupu" style, so she also got seaweed (ocean) salad, seared pork (really good), unagi bun (not enough unagi & bun a little dry), & edamame (with another beer!). There's also chicken broth, miso & spicy miso ramen. Not a lot of choices, which is a good thing! The best restaurants never have a large variety. When you're good at something, focus on that! This is a small building nestled in downtown Phoenix that is definitely one to check out! I loved all of the anime posters and vibes of the place. It looked like there was possible outside seating but was empty, but I did go at night so it was probably put up. I was able to seat myself and the server helped me order. They were extremely friendly and check in every so often if I needed anything. I ended up getting the Tokyo shoyu ramen and added a soft boiled egg to it. It came out quickly and was nice and warm. We visited Ramen Kagawa for dinner after hearing good things about this place. First impressions weren't great. It was incredibly warm inside the restaurant. I understand that's partially due to the open kitchen but it was a little uncomfortable. Also the staff at the counter checking people in weren't super friendly. They don't have a conventional waiting area or check-in process, so we were a little unsure where to stand since the whole restaurant is full of tables. We ended up just waiting outside, which was fine since it was nice out. They actually seated us quicker than initially stated. The second miss for me was the food. We ordered a couple appetizers - Karaage and Takoyaki, and two Ramen dishes. The Karaage was good but the Takoyaki was undercooked. The Ramen was just okay. I'm don't consider myself a ramen expert by any means but ours was definitely lacking in the seasoning department. The broth didn't have the same depth of flavor I've had in other ramens previously. We dined here for my birthday recently and we were greeted by the most friendly server when we walked in. She was our server and also running the front whole front of house - and she did it all amazingly! I was impressed. I ordered the Tonkotsu pork ramen (I always add an extra egg) and it was SOOOOO GOOD 11/10! One thing to note is their eggs are served cold due to how they are prepared and stored which was a little different than what I prefer but they warmed up a little after mixing with the broth. I do wish the broth overall came out hotter. My husband and I like to normally let the everything to sit for a bit in the super hot broth but the ramen here came out warm so we ate it right away. The ambiance is very inviting and we love that it's a small restaurant! The reason this got 4 stars instead of 5- Not sure if this is a normal thing to do these days with all of the to go orders, but the chefs microwaved the to go food right before the delivery guy came to get it haha. They had a happy hour where we got a beer and 4 dumplings for $5 as well which was great. Other than the food this restaurant was just okay. The broth is flavorful, chashu packs a punch, and the menu is simple so I want to come back to get the same thing over and over again. Only qualm I have is you have to add the egg as extra, so I didn't get to properly judge this visit around. Visited Ramen Kagawa on our recent trip to Phoenix, and was really looking forward to a delicious bowl of ramen. We were seated promptly on a chilly Friday evening, our waitress was friendly and helpful she took our orders quickly. Our sake and food came out quickly as well. I got the spicy miso tonkotsu ramen with corn, and it did have a lot of flavor but the spicy aspect was underwhelming. Also, I wasn't a fan of the noodles they were a weird texture for ramen noodles. Almost too slimy? I don't know how else to describe it. The pork was also over cooked and not very tasty. Their ramen was also ok. First off, I'm not a local so I was just wanting to eat something simple that was nearby. This place happened to be close so we swung in and there were barely any people at first. I was trying to be nice to the server because she seemed really welcoming at first. However, after a while, there was bad energy and I thought I was overthinking it but didn't want to waste anyone's time so we began to order. When I began to order so did the confusion and chaos. First I pointed at the dish I wanted on the menu which was a combination dish and she nodded; thus, I thought she put in the dish. Overlooking that, we trudged on with our order and listed a few other dishes. And most notably she asked us if we wanted to add an egg (which wasn't big and actually pretty small) to the ramen without telling us that it was a two dollars extra. Additionally, we ordered an eel don and she started asking us if we wanted it fried or homemade to which we said homemade. Obviously, we assumed it was relating to the eel but after receiving the the homemade GYOZA we realized she was referring to the gyoza which we never mentioned before. By this point the place started filling up and it started to get really hot I low key would have appreciated a fan but it wasn't too bad On a different note the lighting was really bothering me. There were like three different colors of lighting: yellow, orange, white plus the red lanterns that were bright even without any type of light. Also, the food is mid and average. The high point of the meal was the green tea cheese cake. It's a perfect portion for one person or two folks to share. It's a really complex and delicious cheese cake. Probably would have done 2 stars if not for the cheesecake. The seaweed salad is on par with what we would expect. The vegetarian ramen is wild tasting. Like maybe a sweet potato something? Ramen Kagawa has the vibe of a pop up restaurant, which usually I have no problem with. Unfortunately, it is run as though they just opened. The one unlucky waitress who served the entire restaurant seemed to be constantly running around. She looked rushed, made me feel rushed to try and order. My go-to order at any ramen joint is the tonkotsu ramen. The egg costs extra, which I was disappointed about. But the egg is also a must. I would argue that it's the star of the dish. My chashu was a little chewy and red, almost like a Chinese chashu. Broth and noodles were fine, no complaints. My partner got the pork rib tonkotsu ramen which is a much better deal - you get almost a half-rack of pork ribs in addition to the ramen. We also split a potato croquette curry that was aesthetically more pleasing than the ramen. I really like the pickled ginger addition as it adds some acidity and a nice kick to go with a medium-heavy curry. Overall - decent spot. Service is good, but if there's a lot of people, it might take a while for them to get to you. Food is OK, definitely recommend the pork rib chashu for value.
