Never figured out the exact name of this place. Gave it a try after reading all the good reviews, which I don't know if it deserves. There is no doubt that he may be a good tailor and my simple hem of new suit pants was not difficult. He did get them done in a day. I had a bad feeling when I pulled up and saw the place. The bad feeling continued once inside. The place obviously hasn't been cleaned or organized in years. It needed a sweeping real bad and there were piles of clothes spread everywhere, one can only guess how he keeps them straight. I left with him saying "before 5 pm," unaware of the exact time they'd be ready. I arrived at around 4 pm, he sees me, he realizes he forgot to do my pants and tells me in a rush that they'd be done in 10 minutes. Not wanting him to do a bad rush job, I told him I'd come back in 30 minutes. He also only accepts cash for anything under $25, which was another negative. He might be a nice guy, but I probably will not go back. read more

I couldn't say any more great things about this guy and his work than everyone else hasn't said already. His work is great, you are in and out in a flash and the prices are unbeatable. He has a small shop, so of course you are going to see his work space as it is and there isn't some fancy reception area to hide what he is doing. I had a linen suit altered, and it was finished much faster than I expected...same with some pants my fiance brought in. Above all, he has a great personality and is easy to work with. For reasons that I can't completely articulate, Ramirez custom tailoring is one of my favorite custom experiences ever. I have brought him several odd fixes over the years. I have had custom clothes made in my travels to Asia, and sometimes due to timeline I picked them up as I was leaving the country. Occasionally there are weird issues with something that normally wouldn't occur in off the rack clothes. For example, the zippers in the fly were shorter than normal in 5 suits I had made in Vietnam. I didn't even notice til I got back to the states. I had asked other tailors about these issues and they were reluctant for some reason. Mr. Ramirez is happy to fix anything extremely quickly for a very low price. He gets up and goes to work seven days a week, which I respect. He is a good, hard working, friendly man. read more

Mr. Ramirez is by far the best tailor around. I've been using him for years for everything from hemmed pants to broken snaps on leather. He can and will do anything up to and including my ridiculous requests ("can you patch these ridiculously torn jean shorts with this flannel"). Most recently he patched a flannel of mine with a strip from his own pajama pants!! He's so fast, affordable and super sweet. He moved from PB to Clairemont and I would follow him basically anywhere. WARNING: If you have a deadline, DO NOT go here!!!! I was a bridesmaid in my best friend's wedding recently in NC. Two weeks prior to the wedding, I dropped off my dress here to be altered only after having read rave reviews on Ramirez. We discussed 3 different needs for altering the bodice which was entirely too big - all for $35. One week later, I drove over to pick up my dress only to find it had NOT EVEN been touched. He told me to come back the next day. So I came back the next day, and it STILL HAD NOT BEEN TOUCHED. So I let him now know my frustrations and he told me to come back in 1 1/2 hrs. No way in heck was I going to let him sew up a $120 dress in 90 minutes! With the wedding less than a week away, I left it anyway. I returned the next day to find it had only been taken in on the sides and the bust's wire had been removed which did no good since the bust was still an inch or two too big - still not worth $20!! Needless to say, I had an emergency alteration done in NC and received my dress hours before the wedding. Discovered too the seams in the back didn't even line up and because he removed the wire without proper altering the bust was "floppy" and I couldn't keep my top up all night. Perhaps he does a good job when he's not backed up, but he shouldn't accept anybody's business unless he knows he can deliver. I was beyond disappointed and frustrated. And to have to have such a beautiful dress sewn and re-sewn is ridiculous. read more

Great experience there. Very easy going. I guess his speed varies according to some of these reviews, but he got 2 pants (1 hem and 1 repair) and a zipper replacement on a jacket done in 1 day! I would concur with Bill B. that it is not posh but the work is quality. I've usually gone to drycleaners for alterations, but this is far superior. I found this guy on yelp. I am so happy!! My teenage daughter needed a vintage dress for a play altered in a hurry! We met him at his "quaint" little shop at 7am on Saturday, he was so friendly and fun! The dress was ready on Tuesday at 6:30 am just like he promised!!! I read the positive reviews on here before giving him a call, and I'm happy to be another satisfied reviewer. After calling a few other businesses and being told my suit jacket would take weeks to adjust, I called Mr. Ramirez and showed up at his shop just minutes later. He paused his work to talk to me, had me put my suit on, and told me what his plan was to make it fit me better. He gave me a quote right there ($95 -- it needed a lot of work on just about every stitch) and stayed true to it. He did a LOT of work on it and he had me stop by a few days later to check his progress and make more adjustments. Just a few days after that he was done! I think it was less than a week in total. I was very satisfied with the job he did. He's a friendly guy and runs a modest shop -- been in the business for a very long time...I think he said maybe 30-something years. I brought in a suit that I bought a while back that was quite large for my size. Mr Ramirez was able to downsize the suit and now it fits Great. He charged a fair price and it was done within a reasonable time frame. Ramirez...is heaven sent...this guy is, as stated by others, just "cool, good and AMAZING"...he is also EXTREMELY affordable. I usually leave an extra 25% on top of what he charges because I have been a long time customer and I think he is still giving me my 1987 Prom Tux Hem prices...it is NUTZ. So damned funny too how he works but you must trust him. He is a GENIUS inside his small side hole shopfront that is scary upon first arrival for some. This place has NOTHING fancy in it but for Ramirez' coolness. Anyway, he will listen to you and you will wonder if he grasps English but he does. He will then take your stuff and throw it into some random pile where you think it is lost for ever and never going to get finished. You then get no price and just walk out, maybe holding a meaningless ticket that is really nothing more than your reminder that your stuff is inside his nest. You should come back with an expectation that he may not have gotten to your piece yet but as soon as he sees you he knows where it is, an asks for "FOWTY minutes to get it finished..." you come back and it is ALL PERFECT...he is a very very kind man with great charm and unbelievable stories if he spends the time to tell them to you. read more

Saw the positive feedbacks on Yelp so I brought my bridesmaid dress here and gave them a shot. The wedding was in a few days so I needed a place that was able to provide a quick turnaround. Mr. Ramirez gets 5 stars on that alone. I was able to get my dress back the next day, however, the alterations looked average. I was not impressed because some of the threads were still sticking out from the dress. He also had to adjust the dress twice because he made it too tight the first time. I went to this tailor based on yelp reviews--unfortunately, there weren't enough reviews. I took some pants to hem, and they did okay. But when I took a dress to be custom made---sooooo wrong! I brought everything necessary-fabric, lining, even a pattern, but they said they didn't need it. We did a first measurement and he said it would be ready in about 4 weeks. I went back about 5 weeks later to get my dress. Unfortunately, it wasn't done and he said to come back the next week. Frustrated, I walked out, but returned a week later. Then when I came back, he told me another week. At that point I was so upset (however, I wanted the dress for a special occasion, so I went back yet again). It had been 7 weeks by now. I called them before I went down, they said the dress was finished and I could pick it up. I went to the store and yet again, it wasn't ready. Fortunately, he said would have it done later that day. I picked it up later that day and went on my way. However, when I put on the dress, it didn't fit whatsoever! I was so upset, I didn't even have them fix it. This little gem is located inside the older, high rise building next to Taco Bell/rite aid. I came here early one Saturday am-a dress of mine needed fixing for a wedding i had that afternoon. Mr. Ramirez thankfully told me that he could fix it right then and there pretty quickly-i was thrilled! He pulled up a seat for me to sit on and i sat & waited for maybe 15 minutes while he worked on my dress. A very nice & pleasant man to talk to. It was so kind of him to fix it on the spot-as I'm sure he had a ton of other items to fix/alter. I was so grateful he could do this. Worst experience ever.I went to Ramirez based on the reviews on yelp. Not only did it take 4 weeks to get my $350 dress back, but it didn't fit me and there was SUN DAMAGE to the dress!! That's right, it is now sun-bleached on the front from being in Ramirez's shop. As I suggested it was the light from window, he went over to it, pulled the blind down and said, "No, it's not from here because this is always closed". Yet, I had just watched him close the shade. I'm so frustrated. I only wore the dress twice. What a waste of $350. Thank you Ramirez. read more

I have been looking high and low for not just a very good tailor, but an EXCELLENT one. I am so happy to have found Ramirez though Yelp. Thank you! I brought in an expensive Diane von Furstenberg dress that was several sizes too big (I am a size zero and this was a size 6) but I loved it and bought it hoping to find just the right tailor to customize it to my size. It has a complicated pattern and cut and layers. This was not the job for the faint of heart or less experienced tailor. With barely a glance, he knew what needed to be done. I sheepishly asked if he needed to measure or mark it up in anyway, but he so sweetly (without taking offense to my doubts) assured me that he got it. And wow did he! The dress was absolutely perfect! There are several places in La Jolla that look fancier and make a big fuss about measuring and pinning and marking and apparently you pay for the atmosphere and their expensive rent but not quality of work. Yes, Ramirez has piles of clothes he is working on, yes it seems like he didn't even measure you... but let me assure you... the piles reflect just how busy and good he is. And he can tell with barely a touch just what needs to be done. He is thorough enough to tell you if you need multiple fittings to be sure it is exactly the way you want it. So the review by "Abby" is misleading. That is the point of multiple fittings- to fine tune and get it just right. Not only is Ramirez an incredible tailor whom I now bring all my high end clothes and leather jackets, he has fantastically reasonable prices and is an incredibly kind and sweet "old school" gentleman. I am so thrilled to have found him and I can't be selfish in keeping him a secret! He deserves your business and you will not be disappointed! read more

He's always gotten the work done in a very timely manner and been good about rushing things if I need something done last-minute. Love this guy. I gave him five stars even though it took him six weeks to make cushions for me and he initially said they would be ready in a week or two. They were perfect and worth the wait. Just make sure to call first if it's out of your way. He came it to work at 4 a.m. just to finish my project when I told him I was having a party and needed those cushions. I took an expensive designer wool coat ($700.00) brand new that needed some alteration. When I went for a fitting Mr. Ramirez was very much in a hurry for me to leave. When I was taking the coat off I saw some light going through the garment and when I look closer I realized there were moth holes. He pretended not knowing what happened. The coat was completely ruined. He has a moth infestation that should be treated if he wants to stay in business. Be aware!!!! read more

Reading the reviews really helped me manage my expectations so I am adding my review as well. Ramirez is darling and he definitely knows his stuff. He altered my dresses, pants, skirts...all different types of requests. His prices cannot be beat! He did not have my alterations done on time, in fact I had to go back several times until I had picked up all my pieces (although I had dropped off about 15 items). But because I read the other reviews, I was anticipating this issue so I did not give him anything urgent and I planned for delays. If you do need one piece right away or sooner than another piece, he will totally accommodate that and will not be late - but as others mentioned you must be clear. So I highly recommend Ramirez as long as you are prepared for a wait and he will not always remember to call you. But he is doing the best he can and works so hard. So if you have the right attitude, want to get a GREAT deal, and enjoy supporting a dedicated local business owner, this is the place. If you are going to stress and not go with the flow, or if you are under time constraints with multiple pieces go somewhere else. read more

After reading yelp review I decided to take a big plunge and bring in 16 shirts for alteration. All the work was excellent. The price was very reasonable. He even rushed a few shirts for a trip I was taking. The remaining shirts weren't ready when promised, but I had indicated that I wasn't in a big hurry, so I suspect he factored that into his very busy business. An added bonus is that he's a really nice guy. I highly recommend Ramirez.. Oh....and while you are there wander into the local (Javanican) coffee house next door (on the corner)....very cool place w/ really good drinks and a local beach ambience. read more

Mr. Ramirez is my boy! I came to him to have some alterations made to a custom suit. I was also interested in learning more about how the alterations are made. I've changed shape quite a bit since I had the suit made, so I had to go in for a few fittings, and Mr. Ramirez did an awesome job and basically taught me how to better order suits in the future so that they can more easily be altered. I was excited to try this place after reading these great reviews, but I was pretty disappointed with the service. I dropped off a bridesmaid dress to be altered and was told it would be done in one week. I came in to pick it up, and it hadn't even been started. I was told again to come back in one week and when I did (with a crying baby), there were still seams to be sewn. I had to wait while it was finished. The work was quality, but I was really annoyed that it took so long to be completed. read more
