my wife got her jeans hemmed here. he did a great job. but when we called 24 hours after they were supposed to be finished, apparently he hadn't done them yet. they seemed to be completely forgotten. he told us they'd be done in an hour, and they were. but i can't give a 5* review. just something to consider if you need something done on a very strict timeline. you may want to call and prod things along. but with respect to the alteration itself: top notch at a decent price. read more

Thomas is the jean god!!! He can hem any pair of jeans you take to him and keep the original hem... not that he is the only tailor who can do that but you seriously cannot tell they were hemmed. He is super friendly and you are in and out of there super quick. Definitely call a day before you are supposed to pick up your stuff to remind him you are coming. Mr. Ramirez is very good at his job. He really knows what to do if a piece of clothing needs tweeking. He has done many different hems for me, tightened waists, sewn straps, and lots of other sewing. I just discovered Ramirez Custom Tailoring this morning, and I'm so glad I did. Mr. Ramirez knows how to get the job done (quickly, but also with quality) and he knows how to treat his customers. He's very friendly (much unlike several of the other tailors I have visited in PB in the past), and his prices are reasonable. I had a dress that I needed altered ASAP for a weekend trip and he was able to turn it around THE SAME DAY. I went to Ramirez's Tailoring after reading the reviews here on yelp. While he did a great job on the items we brought in, they weren't ready when he promised. It wouldn't have been a big deal if we were local, but we drove 20 minutes to find that he needed a few more days. Needless to say, we were a bit annoyed. If he told us up front he would need a week or so or even if he called us to tell us that it wouldn't be ready that day, it wouldn't have been a big deal either. Just don't tell me it'll be ready in a couple of days if it won't be ready in a couple of days. read more

This guy is AMAZING. I needed a skirt taken in for someone else, however it was going to be complicated because the skirt had a lot of pieces to it and that someone else wasn't there to make any measurements. All I had was another skirt that she was able to fit in to compare it to. He pretty much eyed the other skirt and knew what he had to do. I was a little freaked because he didn't need me to leave the other skirt for comparison. I came back the next week and to my amazement it fit the girl perfectly and didn't look like it was altered at all. This guy is good. read more

I needed to have a dress I recently purchased altered (as in adding fabric to cover up some parts of the dress) for a wedding I was attending. This was my first experience having to go to a tailor and I can honestly say it couldn't have gone better. I have a strange body shape and have to get my clothes altered, so I always try to find a cheap but quality tailor in the cities I frequent. Thanks to Yelp, I found Ramirez! Ramirez is friendly, laid-back and really funny. He prices are extremely affordable (about 8 or 9 dollars to hem pants) and he knows his stuff technically. The turnaround time is really good to. One more plus is the parking situation, I had no trouble parking either on Grant right in front of his shop or on Cass on the corner of his shop where there is 15 minute parking (which more than enough time to get measured and drop off your clothes). For reasons that I can't completely articulate, Ramirez custom tailoring is one of my favorite custom experiences ever. I have brought him several odd fixes over the years. I have had custom clothes made in my travels to Asia, and sometimes due to timeline I picked them up as I was leaving the country. Occasionally there are weird issues with something that normally wouldn't occur in off the rack clothes. For example, the zippers in the fly were shorter than normal in 5 suits I had made in Vietnam. I didn't even notice til I got back to the states. I had asked other tailors about these issues and they were reluctant for some reason. Mr. Ramirez is happy to fix anything extremely quickly for a very low price. He gets up and goes to work seven days a week, which I respect. He is a good, hard working, friendly man. read more

Okay I haven't really written a review because I am a really tolerant guy but this one I think really deserves a negative review (would have given zero stars if possible). Be warned that this is a pretty long review. I went searching for a local tailor (I live in PB and my tailor is in LJ village) and found great reviews for Ramirez so I went there Saturday to get two pairs of jeans hemmed. I went in and got welcomed by a short and chatty tailor. I thought he was pretty nice and well... chatty. It was pretty busy that Saturday and he was very quick taking my measurements (not really a bad thing), said they'll be done Monday night, and gave me a ticket with $26 price quote in it (one original hem - $16; and one regular hem - $10). Really standard pricing so everything was still fine at this point. I came back Tuesday morning to pick up my jeans. He kind of shuffled a bit trying to find my jeans, saying "he thought he's done it (worked on them)" and then finally finding my two pairs not done. He told me to wait 30 min and he's going to work on them but I politely said that I was just going to come back the following day (thinking I wouldn't want him rushing on my jeans). Like I said, I am really tolerant to people so I was just cool and didn't give any attitude. I came back the following Wednesday morning to pick up my jeans. They were done but he made 2 mistakes: 1) Both pairs had regular hem (one pair was supposed to be original hem) 2) One of the jeans were long. He hemmed it an inch LONGER than the spot where we marked the jeans to be hemmed (the mark was still there). At this point I was a little annoyed but I was still cool and still didn't give an attitude (I really don't unless I am very pissed off). I politely explained that one of them should have the original hem and even showed him the ticket he gave me for $26 ($16-original, $10-regular). He checked his own records and then again (he was never apologetic, even giving me that "annoyed" look) told me to wait 30-45min while he work on the jeans. I politely declined and told him not to rush and I will be back Thursday morning. I didn't want him to ruin two good pairs of jeans by rushing his work. He then said (perhaps realizing that he screwed up a couple of times), "Ok when you come back tomorrow, I am going to CHARGE YOU $23 INSTEAD OF $26." I didn't ask for any discount but thought it was necessary because of the inconvenience so I told him sure I will be back tomorrow morning. So finally came back today (Thursday morning). Both pairs of jeans were alright so I was ready to pay him. As I was grabbing my wallet, he said $26 for the two paris. I then told him (still calm), you said yesterday your were only going to charge me $23 because of the inconvenience. He then said, no, it is $26 because one of them is original hem. I again reminded him that he said he was going to give me a discount because of his mistakes. He said, alright "I AM NOT GOING TO CHARGE YOU FOR IT." Kind of puzzled but I was still calm and even managed to say, "No, I still want to pay for them but for $23 like you said yesterday." Then he said in an annoyed tone, "I AM NOT GOING TO CHARGE YOU FOR IT BUT I DON'T THINK I WANT YOUR BUSINESS ANYMORE." Wow what a total asshole. O well, I wasn't really coming back but thanks for the free alterations. On the downside, kinda ruined my morning. Screwing up a couple of times, promising a discount and not honoring it, and still managing to become THE asshole - now that is different. Sorry guys, I know you love Ramirez but he is the worst tailor I've ever met. Go to CASTELLI's in La Jolla and you will be delighted. Really good and VERY PROFESSIONAL. He charges the same amount although he only takes cash or checks. I only tried out Ramirez because of his proximity to my house but I am definitely not coming back. read more

Although they usually arent ready when he says they will be, Ill let it fly because he does a great job and he is sooo sweet.
