The Ramona cafe is your standard American breakfast place - hearty food but nothing that special. They serve several egg dishes like scrambles and omelets, but the eggs were overcooked despite the fact that we asked for them loose. Coffee is watery ; no fresh juices. Whenever we've gone we see several groups of locals, including high school students eating big cinnamon buns. Probably just like the scene you would see at the local cafe in most small towns in America. Service is fine but no smiles from the wait staff. So if you are traveling from San Diego to Julian, you can stop in for bacon and eggs or a BLT, but don't expect much to rave about. read more

I'll start with the positive. Our waitress was super nice and always there to help us. The side salad with blue cheese and cornbread was great. Now the negatives. On the way to the table, you could notice chairs that were falling apart and the ends of the laminate tables that had come off and were never glued back. When we sat down at the table half of all the "clean silverware had dried food chucks all over it and the table felt sticky. Our kids ordered hot cocoa but I was surprised with almost a desert looking hot cocoa for 7 dollars each, it was nice but a little ridiculous in my opinion. I had the chicken fried steak. The steak was not flavorful and tasted like grease. The potatoes must have been out of a box "powdered potatoes" because there was no creamy texture and even with gravy the potatoes still had a granular texture. I could not finish my meal. It was a huge waste of money and will not be back. Thank god they have the London Bakery going for them. With all the other food venues in ramona, they need to step there game up for sure. I would not recommend this place. Ordered Prime Rib Sandwich and meat was over cooked, almost black in some places and the bread was hard as a rock (not exagerating!) I have no skin left behind my front teeth because the bread scrapped it off! Cinnamon Bun was ok, nothing special like they claim, have had better at Great Harvest Breat Company in Temecula. My son had the Chicken Fried Steak and he said it was good. Hubby had Chicken Cordon Bleu and he said it was ok. Place is shabby and everything is just outdated, guess that is why it's a dive. At a soccer tourney in Escondido for my son, so we went 30 min out of our way to go to this place. We came here for breakfast on Mother's Day and it was packed, but I expected that. We waited in the bakery and oogled the huge cinnamon rolls while we waited for a table. Once seated, the super pleasant waitress took our drink order and even offered me (the mama) a glass of free champagne! I declined, but appreciated the thought. I ordered home fries topped with bacon, onion, garlic and cheddar cheese, my husband ordered chicken-fried steak and eggs and we got pancakes, bacon and an egg for our daughters. It took a little while to get our food, but the waitress came over with chocolate-covered strawberries for us, so that helped pass the time. I expected the long wait time, since the place was crowded. I have to say that I loved the home fries. The bacon was crispy, the potatoes were perfectly cooked and it was covered with melted cheese. I'd definitely order it again. The girls' pancakes were not that great. They were a little overcooked on the outside and a bit raw on the inside, but I just chalk that up to a rushed cook. Like I said before, they were slammed. My husband didn't enjoy his chicken-fried steak, but he said that the home fries and biscuit were amazing. Passing through town, decided to try this place out. I can't remember the last time I have returned food, but the "Burger" that we were served this evening was such an abomination I had to send it back. This thing was so horrific, it made a 69 cent fast food burger look like a gourmet meal. A couple centimeters thick at best, with the consistency of a dried out piece of rubber left in the desert sun. It was truly inedible; I mean that literally - I think your body would reject it and you would convulse on the floor until it exited your body. How anyone could put this thing on a plate, or even consider serving it to another person is unimaginable. To top it off, the thing came with literally about 8 french fries. And the final icing on the cake was the price - $9+. Again, a 69 cent fast food burger blew this thing out of the water. Compared to a $3-6 "mid tier" faster food burger, this thing wasn't even wildly close in comparison. And getting into the $8-10 burger range, this thing was a downright insult to humanity. I'm looking now at the pictures on other Yelp reviews of burgers - and they look like actually OK. Those look nothing, and I mean nothing like what we received this evening. On the bright side the wait staff was extremely friendly - and I say that sincerely. They were friendly when we got there, and upon seeing the thing... once their horror passed... were more than helpful in taking back and apologetic. The rest of the food was OK. Veggie scramble is excellent. If you omit the yolk you won't miss it - the whites do the trick. Don't be turned off by the weird photo showing movie theatre nacho cheese on the menu. It's not that gross, although the cheese is melted American squares. Anyway, just ask for light cheese and you'll be good to go. The cinammon roll is delicious; a great treat before the savory stuff. If you have a girlfriend who loves sweets, do it! Sit outside if it's not too hot and if you don't mind the joyful roar of motorcycles and fast cars out for their fun. Service was great! This was my first time coming here and I am happy I did. I was in the area for work and was starving. I saw this place and decided to give it a try. Unfortunately, I would say this cute little place is subpar at best. Our server was very sweet and attentive(ish). The bathroom extremely skanky, and the food was just not it. We shared at the table, tried to the cinnamon roll french toast which was extremely dry and tasteless in my opinion and the stuffed french toast which was also just pretty whatever. And if you have any dietary restrictions definitely do not come here because there will be nothing except oatmeal for you. We were in Ramona for a wedding and the hotel associate recommended Ramona Cafe. First of all, Main Street Ramona was a refreshing change after flying into LAX and dealing with all the hustle of traveling. Real small town USA. The Ramona Cafe fits well as a part of Main Street. We asked our server to recommend what to order. She recommended the Meatloaf and Chicken Fried Steak. I had the chicken fried. As a former Texas resident, I was skeptical about the turkey gravy. However, the meal was excellent. My father in law ordered the meatloaf and my wife had the chicken cordon blue. All were excellent. Huge portions, homemade mashed potatoes. Absolutely no way this establishment earns a 3-Star Rating, that is a gross injustice that must be addressed and overturned. This eatery was fabulous ! Let's start with the staff, so friendly and accommodating, very hardworking, non stop and even in near 100 degrees temperatures, they are attentive and serve with a smile. On to the food, this restaurant is among the family style spectaculars of America, right up there with Good n Plenty. There dishes are classic favorites, I had the Crab Cake Benedict, my Son had the Cinnamon Roll French Toast, my wife had the mediterranean wrap and my daughter had the hot sandwich (turkey and gravy) all that can be said is OMG !!! The food was fantastic and the portions are huge!. If you find yourself traveling State Route 78and your going through Ramona, bring your appetite, stop and do yourself a kindness, you won't regret your decision. Went in for their all you can eat rib dinner, was told they didnt have any. So, i ordered the chicken cordon bleu, it was so over cooked, nasty. Mashed potatoes were cold and days old, smelt bad. Wow! What a disappointment. After waiting for 10 minutes, I got up and asked if we were suppose to get our own menus. I was told that they would be brought to us. Sat back down and the menus were brought out. We noticed that one of the waitresses kept going to a nice looking young man sitting with his dog at the out side tables a total of 6 times before someone finally came by and took our drink order, 3 cokes and 2 waters. Waited another long time before someone came by to take our food order. We sat down at 11:15. By 12:05 everyone was upset because of the long wait and the fact that 3 tables of people that came in after us had already gotten their food and left. I ask the waitress about this and started getting excuses. "One of our waitresses just went into labor". TMI and not the customers problem! Also she told us that the 3 tables with a total of 8 people that came in after us got first priority because it is easier to take care of small tables than 5 people. Didn't make any sense to us. Finally, we were all starving and upset so we told them to cancel our orders, that we were leaving. The only nice experience about our visit was that when I went to pay for our cokes, I was told that they were on-the-house. * * *Update 4/9/2015* * * My husband and I decided to give this local place one more try even after the bad experience with service last time. This time we went for breakfast. There were only 3 other tables with customers so we thought that the service would have to be better. It was better than last time, but still not good. At least the excuse was just as creative as last time. "I am sorry that it took so long, we couldn't find the crab". I had ordered the crab cake eggs benedict. As for the food, it was okay even though the crab cake was under cooked and the poached egg was overcooked. Not sure how people are giving this place five stars. Our family ate here yesterday for an early dinner. Walking in was a little awkward as we parked in the back. We literally came through the dishwashing station. We sat down and the first thing I noticed was all the trash and food on the floor. The girl who got our drink order looked as if she hated her job. I never saw her smile once. She was nice though. We ordered our food. Nothing too extreme. Chicken tenders, veggie burger and mashed potatoes. Holy heck we sat there waiting for 25 minutes. I watched the clock they have hung. It seemed as if they had only one waitress working and the one girl to bus tables. Then I saw about three other employees in the back. After getting our food, it was kinda like this is it? My French fries were cold while my boyfriends were hot. His burger was steaming as my chicken tenders were Luke warm. Maybe they have good breakfast. It looks like the kind of place that would. I'll never know because we will never be back. read more

Went here on New Years Eve with my kids. The place was not very busy. Took 20 mins before they took our order. When that finally happen it was another 30 mins before we got our food. My kids were going crazy they were so hungry. And my "hot" meatloaf sandwich was cold. Probably would have tasted good if it was actually hot. I didn't want to say anything because I didn't want to wait another 30 min to get it back and besides I was starving. I just wanted to get out of there. Seen on DD&D My mom & I went up to check it out on a Saturday. We found a seat and no one ever came over to take our order. The bus lady did bring our drinks and menu's. After 20 min of waiting to order, I had to get up and ask If we had a server? They had 3 server's plus the owner was taking tables. Finally after 25 minutes of waiting someone did come by and take our order. We orderd the cordon blue. So.... after waiting another 20 minutes I started seeing people that came in way after us get their food. I got up and looked in the window and our food was just sitting their. I had to tell the owner that was our food and she took to our table. The potato's were cold and the cordon blue was hard/cold. I was so looking forwards to this but it was a big let down. Don't go to the Ramona Cafe for the "chicken fried steak" unless your description of chicken fried steak is a "hamburger patty covered in undercooked dough". This was by far the worst "chicken fried steak" I've ever seen. My 23 year old daughter peeled away the (crispy on the outside, dough on the inside) coating that covered the 'hamburger patty' (not steak) and then forced herself to eat the patty because she was hungry. Being Ramona residents we're limited as to eateries so when my daughter and son inlaw were here they wanted to go to the famous Diner, Dives and Drive In restaurant featured on the Food Network. How disappointing! Our bill was $40. For what...3 sodas at $2.95 each, liver and onions that was so dry and tough. A Senior cheeseburger meal with cold french fries and Fish & Chips that were paper thin filets.. The redeeming part of the meal was that the two salads that were served with the liver, onions & fish were fresh and cold. We had to wait over an hour for our food. Their was a large party and about four other tables of four. From what we could tell it was, 1 cook, 1 waitress and one girl to clear plates and deliver salads. We had to ask for our drinks after waiting some time. The waitress admitted she forgot. Several people ordered pasta dishes and were told they didn't have pasta so they would need to order something else. We overheard people complaining about the service and quality of food. This was on a Tuesday night!!! We've stopped going to Ramona Cafe for breakfast because we have to wait so long for our food that it's just not worth the aggravation. If I could rate zero stars I would. I was first served coffee and the cream was old. It curdled when added to the coffee. I asked for another cup of coffee and found an ant. I returned the second coffee and the waitress although was nice did not offer any consolation for the two coffee issues. The fruit bowl was served in a small parfait glass and the oranges and pineapple were canned. I will not be back and it's unfortunate as I enjoy supporting local business. Stopped by here for breakfast on the way back from camping near Julian. Waste of time & money. If I wanted a plate of grease and bad bacon (how do you make bad bacon, please tell me), I can get my grease at Napa Auto Parts, I don't need to order it on a plate. Seriously, how do you make bad bacon? I think it was my first time receiving inedible bacon. Weird. Our 5 year old daughter commented "Mommy, I've never seen scrambled eggs that look like this."
