Like many family owned cafes, this one can be uneven in service and quality. But day to day, the food is a good value, the service is friendly and most often efficient--except when they are slammed, and the menu is varied. The cinnamon roll is indeed excellent and comparing it to a Cinnabon is like comparing a homemade hamburger to a Big Mac. Yep, the coffee can be a little weak--and the cream can be a little warm--ask for fresh and you will get it. Soups are almost always good and the breakfast skillets are tasty and filling. We stop at the Ramona Cafe for breakfast when we head home from camping in Julian or Mataguay. The breakfasts are great! My favorite dish is the corned beef hash, but I always consider the pancakes as well. The amount of food you get is absurd! I can never finish it! I live in Ramona and went for the first time because of the DDD spot. I have been back quite a few times - love the breakfast and the chicken cordon blue. While I haven't made a regular habit of going, my son has. He has taken all of his friends there and they love it. The food homemade and you get lots. Not sure what the other reviewers were talking about in regards to service in particular. The service was beyond great, very attentive from seating us to taking our order and being patient since it was our first time there. Once order was taken the food arrived in a timely manner and we were checked upon several times as to how it was, if we needed more water, etc. The food was very good, I ordered the chicken fried steak and it was as good as everyone said. My husband ordered "The work" and was very happy with it. Our only complaint was although the home fries were tasty and seasoned well parts were cold and parts were sorta warm. Amazing homestyle cooking. Try the chicken fried steak or chicken cordon bleu--all local favorites. My son in law had the all you can eat ribs and raved about them for days. Worst food in Ramona and possibly San Diego. I ordered the stuffed French toast. The cream cheese and strawberry filling is literally cheap strawberry cream cheese. I waited 30 minutes from the time I ordered to the food hitting the table and it was cold when it got there. The worst part is there were only three tables of people. Just had the worst experience here. We waited over an hour for our food and when we got it it was awful. Basic burgers were overcooked and the French fries were disgusting. The waitress was clueless and the bus girl when asked how it was going, hinting about our food and where it was, complained that she was tired. We have never had a good breakfast here either. Long wait for food to come after ordering. Once it was served it was pretty good. Had the veggie omelet but it was watery. Ordered wheat toast thinking "whole wheat" it was just brown bread. We did get the cinnamon rolls to go and they look pretty awesome. read more

Awful! Several years ago we ate there and it was pretty good. They used to have Aviation stuff all over the restaurant. Not sure if it's under new management, but the last two times we ate there we had the worst customer service. We were almost completely ignored and the food was just so so for lunch. My mother-in-law came in town and wanted to try the Cinnamon. Rolls so I thought we'd give it one more try. Again, awful customer service and the cinnamon rolls from Pillsbury are much better! My kids got pancakes and they were pretty much inedible. They were dry and hard. We will never eat there again. Don't waste your time. read more

Hey all, been coming to this place for years, I've noticed every time I come back, it slips a little in quality and service. We decided to go to Julian to see the snow tonight, so we stopped here, there were three people in the place. The server took our drink orders, we told her we were ready to order, she said we'd have to wait for our server.....???? Ummm okay? So we wait and wait, finally another girl comes over and we order, my son got the kids cheeseburger, my wife and I split the Philly Cheesesteak and the fried chicken plate with mashed potatoes. By the time our waitress took our order, I was 2/3rds through with my iced tea. The waitress looked at my cup, and nodded, I assumed she knew I needed a refill. 20 minutes go by, we don't see her at all. The girl who seated us is all over the place, but never makes eye contact with us, I slurp loudly on my empty ice to get her attention, but no dice. at this point there is only one other person in the place. Our waitress brings out or food, even though we told her we were splitting everything, she said she'd bring out extra plates, (she didn't), she looks at my empty ice tea, smiles and says nothing, I assume she sees it, I hope? Drops off our food and she goes ghost. Fried chicken was burnt, tough and unseasoned, fries, unseasoned, mashed potatoes, bland, the one bright spot? The Philly was really good though, I tried my sons cheeseburger, no seasoning on that either. Overall awful, we were told the chicken came with cornbread, never got it. Our waitress comes back in the dining room after 30 min, walks by our table, takes an order from a couple that just sat down and leaves again without acknowledging us at all. When she comes back in 10 min after that, we get a to go box for my son's fruit, get the check and leave. It wasn't busy at all, they could have given a shit less and it showed in the food quality and service. As I said at the begging, I've been coming here for a while, but don't think I'll be going back. They don't need Guy Fieri, they need Gordon Ramsay. read more

We went on a weekday around 11am for a late breakfast, the place was clean (I didn't use the bathroom, so I can't say about it's condition), and not crowded. We had the breakfast special, eggs, bacon, and pancakes. The food was cooked correctly, the bacon had good flavor and was nice thick cut strips. The service was good, but not hovering. My family and I recently moved to Ramona and decided to try a local restaurant for dinner - we went to Ramona Café during a week night - there were maybe 2 other filled tables when we arrived. Our order took over 40 minutes - the waitress was nice and kept apologizing for the wait. My husband and I had ordered the taco dinner....when our meal arrived, the tortillas were cold and tasted like they came right out of the package (and filled with cold meat) - beans were even cold (not warm, cold). My son ordered the chicken cordon bleu, his plate was put in front of him and he was told the sauce would be right out.....10 minutes later, the sauce came - the sauce was hot, but the chicken was cold and over cooked. I gave 1 star because there is nothing lower. We will never go back and if you're wise, you will not take a chance on this place. read more

We too saw the Ramona Cafe on dinners/drive-ins & dives and thought we would drive up from the city (even with gas still at $3.83 a gallon) to check out it out. We watch guy all the time and planned numerious road trips to sample his opinions. If the Ramona cafe is any example, BIG MISTAKE!!! We went midweek around 1:30 pm. Got a parking right in front. Got to choose our table as there were only four others in the restaurant. By the time I returned to the table my wife had ordered ice tea and I found a huge glass awaiting me. We each ordered something to try and share as this was our first visit. Our waitress was very nice and her service was excellant!!. Then the food came :( :( :( My chicken fried steak was more like an oversized hamburger coverd in so-so gravy. The three eggs, two of which had yokes were ok, their home fries we're terrible. No seasoning, dry, tasteless. Worse I'e ever had. My wifes kitchen skillet was very bland. Her scrambled eggs thank goodness were on top and the best part. Everything under was just tasteless. Maybe had something to do with the undercooked mushrooms. My daughter got the best deal. Her ham & egg scramble faired the best. At least her mushrooms we're at least cooked. The restaurant was nice and comfortable. The waitress was friendly and we enjoyed chatting with her. But on a scale of 1-10, the food gets a solid "zero" So much for our road trip. read more

I had a suspicion they may have gone downhill, what with all that TV notoriety and such, but nothing could have prepared me for the absolutely horrible horrible meal I had there. I ordered the steak, figuring there's not much that can go wrong with meat and heat. Boy was I wrong. It was a gray mass of no- flavor. Wish I could give 0 stars. Walked in and felt really awkward because I didn't know if we were supposed to seat ourselves or wait, no one ever greeted us. We seated ourselves and ended up ordering the chicken cordon Bleu and chicken fried steak. We first received our salads, both of which had bad lettuce. I told the waitress and she didn't care. I read other reviews and people say both of these dishes are great, however we thought the food was horrible! The gravy had no flavor on the chicken fried steak and the potatoes were so bland. The chicken cordon Bleu was very dry and the sauce had to have come from a package. It was a greenish yellow color and had no taste...no buttery flavor, no lemon flavor. It was basically all hospital food. This dish was even recommend to us by the waitress who had no personality. We didn't want to eat the food but did anyway because I had to pay for it. DON'T ORDER DRINKS we had 2 sodas and 2 apple juices for the kids and the drinks alone were $10! The food was very overpriced for what we got. We won't be back and I feel bad about that because I'd like to keep business in Ramona, but I would rather go down the hill to get better food and better service. read more

Was surprised to see the Ramona Cafe on Triple D - as we used to go there all the time. Food used to be better, I had wondered if they got a new owner a year or so ago, but it's the same owner, the food just got bad. Over the years, I've noticed their gravy getting colder and tasting more like flour. I've always hated their cold hard "homefries" and try to remember to ask for hash browns instead. Why is their food always cold? I was pretty surprised to see on DDD that she prided herself on using MARGARINE in her cinnamon rolls! YUCK! Chemicals and food coloring! We took my sister and her boyfriend there, that was the last time we went. We ordered a cinnamon roll and were shocked to see it being unwrapped of plastic wrap (when was it baked?) It was hard and not good....that is their "Pride and Joy"! Haven't gone back since - I'd rather go to Denny's. read more
