I spent over $100 per person for one of the smallest, most disappointing meals I've ever had at this subpar, overpriced restaurant. The good: Absolutely beautiful inside & out: classic structure & picturesque view. Delicious cheesecake. Friendly, knowledgeable staff. The bad: Everything else. The lobster pasta was served lukewarm. It was not bad, however at around $50 I'm expecting more than just "not bad" and a reasonable portion. This main course was so small it could more appropriately be called an appetizer. I photographed it next to a coin to show scale. The high priced Beet salad & side of carrots were also comically tiny. Neither knocked it out of the park in terms of quality. For the price, one expects far more. Most of the desserts on the menu were not available. The staff, while friendly & helpful, seemed overworked and overextended. This resulted in underwhelming, inattentive service. Our water glasses sat empty without an offer of a refill for an unacceptable 5-10 minutes. The staff gave one of us a free coffee and cheesecake slice. I appreciate the gesture however it cannot start to compensate for the very substantial problems here. read more

Had brunch at Rams Head Inn. It was a rainy day but the sounds and coverage of the patio area made such a nice and moody vibe. My boyfriend and I ordered a Spritz and Rams Head Martini to drink as well as the Eggs Fluke and Shrimp and Avocado Omelete. When my fish came out I was a bit surprised by how small it was, the size of the plate also did not help. While I understand the egg was a quail egg, it still was a bit of a small portion that seemed to rely on the side of potatoes to fill me up as oppososed to the fluke. My boyfriend's omelet was absolutely delicious, still on the smaller size but more reasonable. We went here for dinner as a group of 7. The grounds are beautiful as we ate on the back patio and overlooked the water in the distance. The kids had chicken fingers and fries, which were quite good. The honey mustard had horseradish or wasabi in it as it had a little kick to it, but it was really good! For a drink, I got the Harelegger (I think). It was solid. Could taste the bourbon with a hint of sweetness. For dinner I got the burger, which was cooked well and my wife got the lump crab au gratin. As a bonus we got a plate of popovers. They were really good and the butter was delicious. Overall really nice time. And also the kids loved seeing the sheep! read more

We went to the restaurant on July 4th. Drinks came quickly, apps came quickly and then dinner took more than an hour and 15 min to come. I had the Eggplant Milanese which had 3 thin slices of eggplant and completely dried out and inedible and priced at $40!! We had scallop dishes which had 3 scallops each . No one apologized to us for the long wait or did anything to make up for the terrible service and we spent over $900 for a meal that was beyond unacceptable. The fact that there were no apologies is what upset me the most. I would never recommend this place . They could have done a lot better.. read more

The Good: Grounds are gorgeous and the water view is great. Staff was kind and attentive (when they were on duty). The Bad: The Inn is riding the tails of the past reputations. Decor was dated and worn in the rooms. No amenities like TV or an available Wi-Fi (there is Wi-Fi but it's locked; when I asked for it the staff was off duty on the front desk. So, effectively, no Wi-Fi. The rooms needed a good deep cleaning and a seriously refresh. You would think that art on the walls might reflect the beautiful vistas of Shelter Island; instead there were creepy pictures that looked like off the set of "The Shining". The ventilation made for a hot, stuffy atmosphere in the rooms. Hot water took a good 10 minutes to come up and was tepid warm at best. My travel companion left an unfavorable review on Google and I received two phone calls from management implying that the poor rating would hurt the hotel and what I could do to change them. I had nothing to do with that review, but I own this one and I would encourage management to focus less on online reviews and take a good hard look at the product that they are selling. At a price that is closer to $1000 a night than $500, a premium price demands a premium product and on this point, the Rams Head Inn fails miserably. Unless there is a complete renovation and perhaps a change in ownership, this property is a hard "avoid". read more

We came back to Ram's Head Inn after many years. We have always had such good memories visiting there and looked forward to having a delicious dinner. I was immediately disappointed because they were not serving the two selections I previously decided I would like to have tried when going over the menu. I was, however, more disappointed in the not only the portions served, but how they were prepared. My selection of eggplant was thin, fried and soggy. Pretty gross. My husband's chicken and potatoes dish was also too oily without a hint of honey, orange nor thyme it claimed to have. I am sure my previous selections would have been just as bad. We frequent many high end restaurants and I must say that this was the worst meal I have had in a while. read more

After spending the day exploring shelter island with my uncle, we drove out to the rams head inn and grabbed a crisp glass of wine, and enjoyed the hotel and its grounds! Getting there is half the fun. We took a much earlier (North) ferry then necessary, so we just drove around Shelter Island for awhile exploring. What a unique location! We arrived as they were opening on a Sunday, for brunch, and it seemed like maybe they were not quite ready for guests. Once settled in, the food and service were fine. You've heard about the "bread" basket, and if not, you'll be pleasantly surprised by how good it is. The setting and decor are like something from the last century, in a good way. You feel like you are visiting your Grandma's house, if your Grandma was related to the Gardiners or other old-school Long Island dynasty! Food-wise, nothing stood out as horrible nor exceptional, but certainly very good. We walked on the lawn after our meal, they have cornhole and other games setup, I assume for guests of the Inn, and we fed the sheep that are on property. All in all, a great way to spend a Sunday, before taking a (South) ferry over to Sag Harbor and the long ride home. read more

Eight of us enjoyed a perfect afternoon at the Ram's Head for Mother's Day brunch. My husband and I enjoyed a signature cocktail recommended and prepared by the charmingly affable bartender, Brendon., as we were waiting for the rest of our party to gather. From there we were taken to our table on the veranda overlooking the expansive yard and the bay beyond. Families were gathered on the lawn, playing bocce ball and and croquet. it was a scene reminiscent of the Great Gatsby. A three course meal was ordered and beautifully served. All of us found the menu selection to be diverse as it was delicious. Everything from the various starters to the main courses were exquisite and portions, most ample. Nothing but compliments to the chef, the staff and the general manager, Nick. And the baby lambs on the property were a real hit! Great experience. read more

We stayed at the Ram's Head Inn and the experience was wonderful. The staff was very friendly and attentive from the moment we walked in. The manager even gave us a tour of the Inn while sharing interesting facts about the history of the property and surrounding area. Our room was very cozy and well appointed, with good wi-fi and strong water pressure. We enjoyed a game of chess in the parlor by the fireplace and then dinner in the main dining room. The meal was excellent from beginning to end. Thank you to everyone at the Ram's Head Inn for making our getaway so relaxing and memorable, we look forward to visiting again! read more

Ordered a salad that had small green dry leaves,a single strawberry cut in 3 pieces.3 dots of goat cheese.Awful. Also had a pasta dish with unidentifiable veggies,sparse pasta bland sauce very small portion. 2 main portions of rubbery cold Duck Breast, not crispy or sliced. With 2 tablespoons of couse couse.places with balsamic vinegar taking up the place. 1 roast chicken portion.nothing special. 1 kids chicken fingers & a shrimp cocktail. $400.00 + tip. This was always a upscale venue. NOT NOW!!! Only the overpriced menu is. Ruining a special occasion. P.S.just recieved a call asking about a V.M.I left more than a week previously. Charming! Here for a wedding last summer and the staff did an outstanding job of keeping the party going, even when the skies opened up right after dark. A hurricane like down pour was addressed quickly with rolled down shelter and enough space for all guests to spread out indoors while still maintaining distance. The quick action on the part of the staff was definitely key to keeping all the guests happy. I was onsite for several meals during my stay and can say the food, especially the raw bar, with restocked oysters, clams, and shrimp was fresh. A seafood boil the night before the big event was executed with precision. This is no five star resort by any means but there are some activities to partake in for old and young; a backyard giant connect four, x-large hammocks for more than one, bocce, and a nearby sandy area right by the water for little ones to enjoy are just some of the stuff that is available. Even though it was the summer, the ample trees on the property, shielded much of the grounds from direct heat, allowing for a pleasant outdoor experience. I did stay at the inn for the event and enjoyed the fact that I didn't have to drive home after a party. Now the rooms are a little dated, they are a little small in terms of square footage, the walls may be just a little thin, there may not be enough outlets in the rooms for all your devices, and perhaps the limited temperature control is a little archaic, but hey that's the charm of staying at Ram's Head Inn. Ram's Head Inn is from another time, and must be appreciated for glimpse of a past memory. read more

Informed the waiter of this when we first sat down & asked him to bring it out first. Never happened. Our dinners showed up & when we asked about the pasta, it took another 20-30 minutes. Have been here a few times and never disappointed! The ambiance is wonderful, nicely decorated for the winter holidays and cozy with multiple fireplaces. The cocktails are well done, (Manhattan, mulled wine and spiked cider) great wine list and the food is delicious. Our favorites were salmon, roasted cod entree, lobster pasta, winter salad appetizer, artichoke soup and the burgers are great. The brunch is also incredible, great that they had a Santa brunch and a holiday dinner show this year! read more

My first and I'm sure last experience at The RamsHead Inn. Lovely ambience and staff, but that's pretty much it as far as the niceties .First, we were told there was no food being served, only drinks. Myself, not being a drinker settled for water, ,my brother in law & sister each had a cocktail Next we got a menu with only one item at $72 each, the which was the Wednesday seafood boil, which consisted of a two clams ,3 mussels, three fingerling potato's 1/3 of a corn on the Cobb, three shrimp, and a lobster tail that was about 1/8 lb. and all this arrived in square plastic trays. Classy. There was also some kielbasa that was about two inches long, two absolutely flavorless mini corn muffins and a cookie. At least the bowl to discard shells in was ceramic ,and only 1 for the three of us. We each got a fork, but no knife for the 2" sausage. My lobster tail (small as it was) was seemingly glued into the shell, and damned near impossible to extricate from it, making the process rather unpleasant .eEverything was covered in butter making it a real mess to eat and impossible with the single utensil provided us each. When all the butteriness came time to remove from my hands after wrestling with this fare came time to address, my single napkin didn't quite cut it, so I reached for the WetNap provided, guess what? The WetNap was dry when opened. I was like, "Are you friggin kidding me?" Overall a remarkably unpleasant experience to say the least.Burning the money spent would likely have been a more viable option. Unless you don't mind $72 apiece to look at the water, eat somewhere else and avoid ruining your day with a sub par meal served in take out meal plastic containers. read more

I have eaten at the Rams Head Inn many times under different management. It was always good--not amazing but good. Tonite I had the worst meal I ever had and it was not cheap. First, they do not advertise that during the week they do not have a dining room menu. I went for a birthday dinner expecting what I saw on the web site. Instead I had a very expensive $39 terrible hambuger very small, not what it said on the menu and very average. The cacio e pepe was awful could have had mac and cheese from a box--maybe it was. The Caesar salad was a joke a few pieces of lettuce on a plate with dressing no anchovies terrible. Do not go unless they get a new chef and management. We waited for 1-1/2 hours for our entrees. When the food finally came there was confusion between our meals and meals for another table! One in our party had her food served only to be taken back moments later. When our food arrived it was cold. My filet was very tough and over cooked. One in our party had chicken that was raw in the center. We probably should have sent our meals back, but by the time the food arrived we dared not wait another 1-1/2 hours. We had allowed 2 hours for dinner and had to reschedule our cab. We have dined here before and had good meals, but not last night. Beautiful place. I came for a wedding and really enjoyed everything about it. The wedding ceremony overlooked the water and was very picturesque. We sat at a long table for dinner and it had a cool country vibe to it. They have a dance floor inside where a band played and we had a lot of fun. Heavenly spot on the water. The private beach is your haven on this precious island. It's a short drive from town to the swish of the screen door welcoming you in. Rachel greets you with a smile and details on the restaurant (divine) and game options (bocce, tetherball, SUP boards, kayaks). The rooms are made for sleeping ... the inn was built in that era, so plan to be doing things. Ashley will make sure that you have a refreshing cocktail in the charming bar ... she has secret potions. There is a beautiful restaurant ... but you can punt on the table service and take your dinner to the expansive lawn and enjoy in an Adirondack chair with cool breezes. We arrived in time for our reservation but we're told there were no tables. The front desk staff were dismissive and unhelpful. We sat at the bar and 30 minutes later we're told we had a table, no apologies, no acknowledgement that our reservation had not been honored. The upside was that the food was quite good and the service was attentive. I am not sure we would return. The initial contact put a damper on the entire experience. The food was very good although we only tried eggs Benedict and a burger. The table next to us ordered a few different items and they all looked good. Starters were nice - I'm certain these were made by a restaurant distributor and not on site, duck spring rolls, crab cakes and burrata. Ordered 2 lamb specials, swordfish and chicken. Lamb; medium rare - served medium well & covered in pesto which was not mentioned in description. I'm guessing this was the "farm to table" aspect the new owner is bringing tho the restaurant. It wasn't good pesto. The swordfish, was so dry needed a knife to cut it. BAD. The chicken, the safe choice my daughter got was the smart choice, was good. They "re-did" the lamb, brought back lamb that had dark "grill marks" but was more well done all in about 2 minutes. Not sure what went down there. Desserts, skip. Well, at least the cheesecake it had a granular sugar texture. Chocolate cake, below par. WARNING!! I wrote the Ramshead Inn after a horrible experience on Wednesday the 27th of July. "I brought my husband and brother to the RHI yesterday to observe the view, get dinner and have a drink. We were told dinner is not served on Wed and decided to have a drink listening to the music. Then we were told there was a dinner for $75.00 a head, a seafood boil that looked amazing on the menu. That was the first joke. It was a total rip-off. The lobster was smaller than a jumbo shrimp, dry and stuck to the shell. The shrimp, all 3 of them, hard as a rock, over cooked. You could not even spring for a whole corn, we got a third of a tasteless one. The corn bread, dry and tasteless. We had no knives to slice the chunk of Kilbasa No small forks and one napkin and a "dried out" wet nap. The mussle shells had to be forced open. There was about $6.00 worth of food, all sub-par for $75.00. You should be ashamed. The meal was over $300.00 with 2 drinks. It was served in black plastic containers like chinese take-out for $75.00!! Not a real piece of dinnerware in sight. We were robbed. At first we thought it was a very poor put together meal for charity but after asking, we found out that you keep all the money while your advertisement for the night portrays itself as a charity event to save the oysters with a man standing in front of the diners, talking about oysters during the meal. Will never frequent your dishonest establishment again if this is what you consider a meal that is fair or decent. It was disgusting." read more

Just returned from enjoying the new mushroom ravioli at the stylishly renovated bar. Chef Joe masterfully surpassed "al dente" and transcended mere pastadom for an almost pierogi, dumpling/wonton-like subtlety few are able to create. Complimented with a light but flavourful sauce, and perfectly sautéed mushrooms.... indeed less IS more... and this is farm-to-table fresh minimalism at it's finest. This is a slice of heaven on Earth. The moment you walk through the doors of The Ramshead Inn it's like entering a more peaceful, beautiful world. We made reservations for our anniversary just a few hours before, yet when we walked in we were treated like VIP guests who regularly dine here. Troy the host was kind enough to offer us the most beautiful 2-top right along the rail to watch the orange, peach, and crimson hues of sunset as we had a Tuna Tartare that was perfection, and Roast Duck and Pork Chop equally 5 stars. This feels like home. Even for us first timers in a long time...Ill def be back, and it wasn't even that expersive compared to many other lesser picturesque places in Shelter Island. Id rate it 6 stars, but I am only allowed five. read more

Spectacular setting for a wedding. Our son and his wife had their wedding here in November and it was wonderful in every way. Even the weather! Beautiful setting with the water in the background. Great setup in the outdoor tent for dinner. The food was excellent and so well choreographed that I think it was hot for everyone! The cocktail hour spread was picture worthy. So many problems at The Rams Head Inn... Had a terrible experience this past weekend while celebrating our 30th anniversary. We were a table of 10, and my husband and I were also spending the night . First, our room was down graded without a word, explanation or apology to us. When we inquired about why our $750/night room with a water view turned into an ugly shoe box with a parking lot view, Dennis told us there was a plumbing problem in the room we booked, and that also, because we booked on line, he couldn't see our room type. This makes no sense- he knew the room we booked, and we did not book on line. Only after we complained were we given a new room. I guess he was hoping we wouldn't notice? The room did have sort-of a water view, but the furnishings were garage sale finds. We love antiques and old furniture, but The dresser in our room was missing the top handle and the pictures were water stained. No accessible outlet for charging phones- if we moved the bed, we would find an outlet. Not at all what you would expect at that price point. Not charming, not nice. The bathroom was well done. We then went to be seated by the arrogant host Troy. After telling him it was our 30th anniversary ( and after at least two calls confirming our outdoor table and noting the special occasion), he informed me that it rained, as if that's not a natural occurrence that fine establishments can deal with- especially when hours had passed since the storm. Unbelievably, Troy brought us to our table and WET CHAIRS. Troy's offered us napkins to sit on--and I'm not even joking!!!!!! His attitude was so dismissive and rude- and he certainly felt we were being unreasonable in not accepting his napkins for the soggy chairs. A table of 10, a 30th anniversary celebration, PLUS A ROOM STAY Of $750 and this is the special welcome we received? I thought I was on candid camera. Troy literally walked away as were were standing, shocked , around our drippy table. He has no idea what he is doing . Only when our fabulous server Liz came over, was the situation resolved quickly because of her actions. Troy-would it have been so hard to pull dry chairs from the basically empty bar? Liz was a great server. Some of the food was good, some of it was just okay. In the morning, My husband and I expressed our disappointment to Dennis, who made excuses for Troy and the terrible behavior and the initial downgrade of our room. He promised to call us "after to speaking with a few people" to let us know how he could make the situation right. That was Sunday morning at 10:10. Today is Wednesday and we have not received any call from Dennis. I am surprised after he seemed to express regret for the multiple failings- but I guess that was only because we were sitting in front of him. There is something very wrong happening at the Ram's Head Inn. For Dennis to sit and see how upset we were, make excuses and apologies but then not follow thru with a call back to us is unreal. People visit special places to have special experiences, not to be disregarded, and dismissed. I predict the place will shutter its doors if the owners don't take drastic action to remedy this terrible situation. My family would have returned to the Rams Head Inn for special family dinners for years to come. We have a few couples looking at wedding venues soon- we will look elsewhere. When Troy and Dennis are replaced by people trained in hospitality, perhaps we would reconsider. Read all the reviews that are negative- they all say the same thing. Management is rude, dismissive and that Dennis doesn't return calls when things don't go well for the customers. Disgusting. You've been warned! read more

The Ram's Head Inn, with its gorgeous location and property, is squandering lots of potential by apparently forgoing any hospitality training whatsoever for their staff. Came here for dinner recently with my wife. Was greeted by the host Troy - who is more interested in telling you about how many years he worked at Mar-a-Lago (shocker, given the attitude!) and his yoga classes - than customer service. The table we reserved wasn't ready, so we ordered a glass of wine in the beautifully decorated inside bar. Kudos for design, but points lost for a bartender who was deer-in-headlights when I asked for an oakier chardonnay. (As someone who works in hospitality, that's a pretty standard wine ask). What we got was vinegary after clearly being open for a few days. Finally got seated and waited a while longer for service. The food was fine, when it finally came. Cooked at the wrong temperature, and not nearly up to standards of the price point, but passable. The desserts delivered were blatantly wrong. When I got up to use the restroom, I observed a lovely yelling match between Troy, a manager, and another server. Nice touch. I get that hospitality can be overwhelming on a busy night, but Troy and his staff (he's running wellness programs, btw? Lol.) need to work on replacing arrogance with actual service. Mistakes can easily be forgiven when hosts and servers are understanding and apologetic. Not when they're dismissive. Maybe also train your busboys to bus instead of placing dishes at the edge of a table cramped with empty dishes. Love this whole project: beautiful spot, lots of potential for local farm to table stuff (love the partnership with Cornell Coop Extension), but guests are here to dine, and they pay a pretty penny for it. My husband and I took my father in law out to dinner for his 78th birthday. My father in law is a Shelter Island resident. We brought along our 1 year old son and had a great time! They do have a high chair so our son sat in that. My son suddenly needed a diaper change and the staff was so amazingly gracious. Even though the bathrooms did not accommodate this, they guided me to the sunroom where I changed my son behind closed doors. The staff kept checking in on me to make sure all was ok, this was definitely NOT something I was expecting to happen at that time. I apologized profusely and thanked them! Customer service was superb! The food was excellent, I high recommend the clam and corn chowder soup for an appetizer. We will be back in the summer to watch the sunset and grab drinks on their immense courtyard. read more

We had a nice time here for lunch. We ate outside and enjoyed the beautiful setting. The servers were friendly enough and our orders accurate.
