We eat at Ramsey's in Helmsdale (Lexington, Man-o-war) quite often. I hadn't been to the Harrodsburg road location in years. My daughter had a elementary cross country event an Asbury College so we were in the area. The building is old and doesn't look like much but don't let that fool you! The food and service is outstanding! There was (6) at our table and we wanted for nothing. My dad and I had open faced roast beef which was excellent as usual. My wife had the buffalo chicken sandwich which she loved. My son had his normal hot brown. My daughter had chicken-n-dumplings. My dad's girlfriend had chicken salad. Everything was great!! I've had good times at this Ramsey's. I try to go in the summer to get their fresh vegetables. Their sweet tea is good, though I ask for half sweet/half unsweet since the sweet by itself is overly sweet. My favorite meal of late has been the okra/tomato/corn mix with some kind of sandwich. The yogurt chicken sandwich is pretty good, and I had the best damn burger ever there the last time I went. It was seriously a delicious burger. I'm also a fan of the veggie plate, usually with green beans, potatoes of some kind, okra, and the house salad. The ranch dressing here is awesome, I believe because they make their own. The staff is friendly, our waitresses are usually prompt. The only complaint is that sometimes this place is packed, and it can get a little claustrophobic depending on where they seat you. If they tuck you away in the back room, though, it's not as loud. I've eaten on the patio a couple times, too, and it's fine. Ramsey's is my favorite American place in town. read more

I dont know if I can say enough good things about Ramsey's. While they dont offer a lot of vegan fair you can always get a veggie platter, sometimes soup, salad and fried zucchini sticks. Vegan shtick aside, what I love is their Cajun catfish! so moist and delicious :-) the secret, i hear, is the double dipped batter. I have been a patron of Ramsey's a number of times and the food has always been very good. Tonight was not any different and the service was a bit slow. This review is based solely on the experience inside the restaurant. After being seated close by the host, on two different occasions another guest just pulled up a seat at our table. Being on a date this was obviously a bit awkward to have a stranger join the table. We asked our server near the end of the meal if this is a normal experience to which she replied that she had not seen that before and inquired if the manager had seen this occur. This was when we realized it was the manager who sat and oversaw this the entire time. Other than having unwanted guests just help themselves the overall experience was fine. That this happened just a few feet from the manager on two different occasions without ever stepping in is disappointing. read more

Food: I only had breakfast, and the food and coffee itself was fine, but where the food itself was not too outstandingly memorable, the portions were. The Traditional breakfast is one price, yet it can come with up to 5 eggs, and "any or ALL of the following": bacon, sausage, hash browns (home fries really), pancakes, and toast. Whoa! Service: OK. Refills were frequent, but the dishes came out pretty spaced apart. But we had a large group also. So more understandable. Price: Great for the portions Atmosphere: Country American comfort feel, with some patio seating. Fine. A little disappointing. Had the buffalo chicken salad with honey mustard dressing. The chicken was over cooked on one side so much I couldn't cut it with a knife. The menu says all dressings are house-made, and the honey mustard wasn't anything special. My mate had a traditional Reuben sandwich. The bread was nicely toasted. The sandwich was okay but light on the Thousand Island and light on the sauerkraut. The corned beef was excellent, though, which they make themselves. The sandwich was a 7 out of 10 but would have been a 10 if it was dressed better. Service was also a little slow for 1 pm on a Monday. read more

Ramsey's is an amazing Lexington staple. The food is incredible; southern cooking! Everything I have had has been amazing! I'm a huge fan of their Cajun friend catfish! Their pies are also off the charts!!! It keeps getting better: they have buy 1 get 1 happy hour cocktails!!! And for the grand finale: their prices are unbeatable!!!! Oh, the service is top of h too (that is super important). I am not a Lexington local, but Ramsey's is a MUST for every trip into Lexington!!! I seriously LOVE this place!!! This used to be a reasonably priced establishment that qualified as a go to lunch or supper place. Sadly, tho the food remains good, the prices have increased to the point that it's no longer either a bargain or even a good buy. Lunch for two today was $27.65, not including tip! This is one of four Ramsey's locations, and the last one that I've yet to review. This one is off of Harrodsburg Road, just before you cross over to Jessamine County. It used to be an old general store and I actually remember going there as a wee little girl. I was surprised to they have a makeshift patio area... that extra area probably cuts the wait time. We got there around 11 on a Sunday and there was no wait to be seated. It was a bit crowded, but not as crowded as The Coffee Pub that's in the same shopping center area. I usually order the buffalo chicken strip salad, but this time, I gave in to change. From the lunch menu, you can choose one meat option and two side/veggie options, for $9.95. The side salad isn't listed under the options on the menu, but you can request it. The side salad arrived before the meal. It was just a basic pre bagged like salad. The ranch is amazing. They usually will bring a basket of crackers too, so instead of starter bread, Ramsey's brings you crackers. For my meat option, I chose the buffaloed fried chicken breast. The buffalo sauce is perfect, not too hot, but just the right kick for a wuss like me. The cornbread wasn't warmed, so if you order something like beans and cornbread, you may want to ask for you cornbread to be warmed. My baked potato was a bit over cooked though. The inside, near the peeling was brown and didn't taste good. The service was great. I'll still give them an excellent 4 stars... maybe I caught them on an off day. Overall, Ramsey's is a Lexington staple, one of the only places in Lexington to find the Kentucky Hot Brown, a local and tourist favorite. read more

I was totally disappointed with everything about my visit. I sat at the bar so I wouldn't have to wait 20 minutes for a table. I was in the mood for a good steak,and hash browns sounded good too, so I ordered the steak and egg breakfast. My eggs were fine, but the steak was terrible! Not the cooks fault, just cheap cuts of meat. I took it home to feed my dog, and even he had to be coaxed into eating it. The hash browns were plentiful, but not digestible. They were dark brown, big square cuts of potato that appeared to be deep fried. Totally bland, dry, cold, and hard. Not edible at all. Dang near $20 for this! All I could eat were the scrambled eggs, and dry toast, though I did get some jelly for that. The barmaid was a sweet young lady, and so I nicely pointed out my complaints, and didn't request to see a manager, just giving a little feedback. She said the hash browns always looked like that, but I'm telling you the truth, I would be ashamed to let something like that out of my kitchen. Anyway, this place was a dud on the day I went. Really wasn't a fan of the plastic from the kitchen in my meatloaf. It was the wrapper that meat is transported in, right there in the middle of my food, baked right in. Ramsey's used to be one of my favorite restaurants to visit when home in Kentucky, but after my most recent visit I'm not in a hurry to come back. Maybe San Francisco has just spoiled me with the level of service I expect in a restaurant, but it figured at the very least it was common practice for a manager to not patronize a customer. When we arrived there was a 30 minute wait for a table - not a problem, we (my parents and myself) would just wait at the bar and grab a drink. Soon we were seated at our table, and polished off the round of drinks we'd ordered from the bar. After ordering dinner, I ordered a second drink from our server (West Sixth Brewery I've missed you so!). After waiting a considerable amount of time the manager appeared and demanded to see my ID again. I responded that this was the second drink I'd ordered and the bartender had already checked my ID. I don't care - he leered - either he was looking at my ID again or he wasn't going to serve me. Whoa buddy, check the attitude. I commend Ramsey's for their vigilance in customer identification. However, it seems this manager missed the day in training where you learn to interact with customers. You know, the part where you avoid using a condescending tone? When the manager left (spoiler alert : my ID is real), the bartender rushed over to apologize. Never the less, the entire interaction left an unsavory flavor to the whole dining experience. I can look past many things while dining at a restaurant. One thing I won't look past? A floor manager with a bad attitude. read more

This is a staple for us - a "must do" every visit to Lexington! Not the best for a vegetarian but they will work with you. Salads are ice cold, family had the burgers and raved about them. I about died and went to heaven when I ate this food. The fried Parmesan corn on the cob was not to be believed. Catfish and pork were excellent. Black Bottom Banana & Key Lime pies were also outstanding. The key lime in particular had such a delicate balance between tart and sweet and was so so smooth. After a long morning at church and visiting some friends and their newborn baby girl, neither one of us wanted to cook. Comfort food was calling, so Ramsey's is where we ended up for lunch. My wife ordered the Traditional Breakfast and I ordered the Turkey Ruben with Mac 'N Cheese (which by the way is considered a veggie at Ramsey's). The breakfast looked and smelled good. My wife ordered it with bacon, pancakes and 2 eggs over medium. Everything was on par for what one might expect from a local dinner. Pretty tasty and some bites were a tad greasy. Although I've been here a few times, this is the first time I've had a chance to review it. Locals love it. I'm gonna say that this is due to nostalgia. BTW - we didn't order dessert this time, but the pies are the best thing on the menu! read more

Ate at Ramsey's Dinner with my aunt yesterday for lunch, our service was absolutely awful. My tea was empty for about 10-15 minutes twice. She never asked how we were or if we needed anything and never said thank you. Had to flag her done when we did need something. The food was okay, but not spectacular. My fried chicken and Mac&cheese were okay, my mashed potatoes were not good at all. My aunt had the Ruben sandwich which she said was very good. I got a piece of pie that was to die for. All in all I would have gone back to give it another shot, but the service was so bad I won't. read more

OH MY GAWD. Words can't even describe the yummy euphoria this place brings. Typically when we come here, the only words out of our mouths are variations of "yummmm" while shoveling delicious fried stuff into our mouths. I've yet to have a healthy, normal meal here because this is my gluttonous pleasure place, so all I've managed to eat so far are: fried chicken (the best ever), fried porkchop (that sauce!), and the reuben (how did a southern diner manage to rival the reubens I've had up north?). We took my visiting mother in law here for her birthday and traditional some Kentucky cuisine. The food and service was excellent. We were seated right away and everyone was very friendly and accommodating to us and our toddler and newborn. We started off with the fried green tomatoes (very good), my husband, mother and mother in law all got the open face pot roast... I thought they were going to lick their plates they enjoyed it so much. I had the chicken salad which was excellent and my father in law had the meatloaf that looked really delicious too. Living so close to Ramsey's, I was excited to try it for the first time (I'm from out of town, and everyone was telling me I had to go since I live so close). However, the food didn't seem fresh, or flavorful anyway. Everything tasted so generic. I also understand their kitschy theme, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't feel clean. If you want to experience a traditional Lexington experience- Ramsey's is the way to go. Love the Tates Creek and Downtown option but for some reason Harrodsburg just always feels the most down to earth and delicious! You can't go wrong with the Hot Brown, Meatloaf Sandwich, or Reuben. And if you are looking to be able to breathe after you eat, the Buffalo Strip Chef salad is awesome! ice tea and a slice of Missy's and you are golden! This particular Ramsey's is the first place I want to eat, when in Lexington. Love the rustic, "country" location (many years ago, we used to cruise the nearby roads, when this was "way out in the country"!) Love the veggie and original Hot Browns, Mum loves her Reubens, and love the fried green tomatoes and okra, and fresh local vegetables in summer. And lawd hammercy, sweet tea! The service is usually fast, and always friendly. Certainly my favorite local source for comfort food. read more
