My husband had the chicken fried steak with mashed and green beans $28 and I had the tenderloin $65 with broccolini and I sub'd grits for mashed; both were outstanding. They have both indoor and outdoor seating with the outdoor covered and heated during the winter. We both had the prickly pear margarita (very delish) and then I had a glass of red with my meal. Ranch 616 is world-famous for a reason. Anyone that has dined here knows they were just screwed over for not getting a Michelin star. Its a damn shame especially with all the stars that are being thrown around austin like a meteor shower. The food is unique and the drinks are staples. Do you really need more? The Brits may have lost the Revolutionary War but the way they serve their gin and tonics is perfection. If you're untraveled or have been and just unobservant, they serve a cup of gin with a glass bottle of tonic for you to mix and enjoy at your own discretion. As if we haven't stolen enough from the Brits, Ranch 616 stole this magnificent delivery system added a Texas twist, and made it better. The ranch water that is now a beloved standard order for everyone in the Lone Star State originated in the confines of the 616 bar. Or so they say. The "original" ranch water is a delicate blend of tequila with a perfect amount of lime juice and a mandatory glass bottle of topo chico on the side. Served differently is a disgrace to the drink. Margaritas are for you underaged kids who don't know how to drink yet. Go ahead and start ordering ranch water. I would mention there other drinks but if you order them you would be mistaken. I'm sure they are great, but don't be an idiot. The food is as Austin as it gets. Great and weird. Appetizers of fried frog legs and entrees of Quail cooked any way you could ever imagine. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu. And of course, all the food pairs well with cold Ranch water. Have I mentioned the ranch waters are great? 616 is the perfect place to take visitors especially if they have never been to Austin. The only concern I have is the crazy number of bachelorette and bachelor parties that you are surrounded by. I get it, marriage is usually pretty long and you want to celebrate it properly but maybe don't all book the same damn place. It's also pretty obvious to spot y'all with the twelve identical brand-new cowboy hats with your initials on the side, not to mention the sashes and all-white attire. It's not your fault, but still very annoying. Maybe get a private room so everyone doesn't have to see you having so much fun without us. Pro move (please disregard if you are a bachelor or bachelorette party): the bars on the street heading towards 6th Street are phenomenal. I would stop at each and every one. Bless the staff at Ranch 616 for catering to our groups very *specific* needs and for Dimitrius's (sorry if the spelling is incorrect) patience. We had a lot of questions including asking for advice after dinner for where to check our drink spots that Dimitrius answered flawlessly. We ordered a variety of dishes and all were good portions- many of us took home leftovers- as well as delicious. The quesadilla is a must for either an entree or an appetizer. Home of the original ranch water and outdoor seating had us sold. We went on a Friday and a DJ starting playing at 8pm. We were able to make a reservation for 11 of us and our waiters were great. My waitress suggested to substitute my side of rice for potato mashers and it did not disappoint. We took a fire in the hole shot and it surprisingly was a vodka shot not tequila. A former student of mine took me out to dinner to celebrate their successes in 2023 and picked Ranch 616. It was my first visit. First off, it's just a little north of West 6th street, near the action, but near a park and the restaurant has lots of colored lights outside so it felt like entering a cool funky part of town. I arrived first, and sat at the bar and chatted with the bartender who was friendly and gave me suggestions for dinner. I took her advice and ordered the redfish and cheesy grits which were both excellent, but the grits were unique and are definitly worth trying. We had calamari appetizer which were fresh and crisp with a tasty sauce. The food was excellent, and the ambiance funky cool, but the standout feature was the staff and their hospitality. Every single person I encountered seemed to love working there. We arrived around 5:00 before the dinner rush for an early dinner, but stayed a couple hours because it was fun to reminisce with a student and have.a couple glasses of wine. Came here Friday night for dinner. Glad me made a reservation as it was extremely busy which is always a good sign. First things first, a drink. Interesting cocktail list and the Paloma I tried was very tasty. Order calamari as an appetizer which was very fresh with light breading. A couple of nice dipping sauces but the portion was definitely too small for 4 of us. However given the size of the mains, maybe it was best it was that small. Now for the mains, I had the tomahawk pork chop which was amazing. My wife had the red snapper which was delicious and our friends had the fried chicken steak which was massive and the jalapeño trout which looked very good as well. Of course we needed to polish off a great dinner with desserts. A chocolate fudge tart and banana pudding were shared. Very good ending. Only downside was the noise level. It was very difficult to hear each other. People just seemed to be getting louder and louder. But the decorations make the place very eclectic. If in Austin, check this place out. read more

I had the Chicken Fried Steak with garlic mashed potatoes. The steak was ok, but the buttermilk gravy was lacking and not very creamy. The mashed potatoes looked like they were mashed using water rather than milk what there was of them. Maybe it was the breading, but I have never seen a Chicken Fried Steak that was dark brown. The drink was good and stiff and the service was pretty good. I did enjoy eating outside. read more

We came here for Sunday late lunch, which was brunch for them. The ambience was superb- totally Texas, pics from the past as well as mounted animals. The food was ample and delicious and came out very quickly. Mimosa was, sort of, make it yourself ( they gave you ingredients and you poured all yourself). Full bar was available for brunch. This used to be one of my favorite restaurants in Austin. New management changed the menu and "updated" some of the best dishes. The chicken fried beef medallions (chicken fried filet) have been replaced with a chicken fried steak that was so chewy I saw multiple people send theirs back (they did take mine of my bill - so 2 stars). Same w the jalapeño maize chicken (caviar what??) and the fried pies...taste different and by different I mean much worse. I'd love to love Ranch 616 again- please bring back some of the classic recipes and longtime customers will be back!! read more

I went this past weekend with two friends for brunch. I felt like it was just "okay" We sat outside and it was cute! The live music was fun. I got the Bloody Mary for a drink and it was tasty. My friends ordered a bottle of mimosas. The biscuits and gravy wasn't the best I've had. One of the biscuits was burnt on the bottom and hard as a rock so I ate around it. I ordered a side of bacon and that was really good. Our waitress also never brought me silverware so I sat for a while as my friends ate. One of my friends decided to go inside to ask for silverware and she said she saw our waitress in the back eating.
