Staff are nice, dining rooms are pretty and are mostly comfortable, NM's second James Beard American Classic award vouches for the food. (The carne adovada is actually made with local (precious!) heirloom Chimayó chile; everything else is mundane Hatch.) The pricing is warm and the only cell connectivity you'll have is via T-Mobile (which is why I've never checked in here, although I go once a year or so). I don't love the place enough to make a special trip, but I'm happy to get dragged to the Rancho de Chimayó every year while driving through the area. Don't miss it. read more

We had not been back in A few years. This visit is bittersweet since the lovely founder has recently passed away. Unfortunately, this visit fell flat. The usual meals were not as rich, the flan(our reason for going back m) was not as delicate, luscious. Not much modification of interior design , seems old and worn. The kitchen has been revamped and the gift shop has moved (this was true of our last visit, so not that new). It's a beautiful spot, it will hold in my memory. The chicken on the flauta plate had not seasoning, tasted as if it was just boiled and then fried in the tortilla. The rice wasn't cooked all the way so there were some hard bits, in addition it tasted as if it was made in tomato paste. The beans were probably the best tasting thing on the plate. The enchiladas were sopped in chile sauce. Also flavorless other than cheddar cheese. Service: The waitress that took care of us was very nice and fast. Ambiance: It is a very busy place with bus tours coming in for meals. If it wasn't for it being close to the Chimayo Santuario or because it somehow seems to have made it as a "place to see", I don't think many people would stop by. Day 1... we had lunch and shared the combination. Started off with a couple margaritas and chips and salsa. Our server was Eluvina, she was so sweet, personable, and attentive! Sopapillas are a MUST. Minus the fact that the restaurant flooded due to the rain, it was an incredible experience!considering I've been coming here for 40 years, it was like coming home. Honestly, if you're hungry and in this area taking the high road to Taos, I'm not sure where else you'd even go to eat. This restaurant was recommended by a local at an art gallery, so we decided to check it out. We came right after they opened on a random Thursday, but the parking lot was already full, and the restaurant was busy and filling up. We were seated outside in a covered and shady area with lots of plants around. There is a ton of seating, it would seem, just lots of little rooms indoors, and multiple outdoor areas. Service was okay, but borderline slow. I had the Plato vegetariano pequin, which came with a chile relleno, cheese enchilada, and bean and cheese taco. It was good but not amazing. We love the red chile at Rancho de Chimayo, so much so that we will drive from Rio Rancho to enjoy it. Because of their different breakfast hours, I made a reservation. We arrived at our reservation time and were asked to wait. After waiting about 15 minutes, we were seated. I noticed lots of open tables and servers, so a wait to make them seem important? We quickly ordered huevos rancheros with sopapillas. Then we waited, and we waited, and waited some more. We noticed other tables served before us. Finally, the waitress said our food would be right out. We waited! It took 45 minutes for a simple order to come out. Sadly, the owner was not at her reception stand when we left. I was last here over 30yrs ago when I stayed across Juan Medina Road in Chimayo at the Hacienda before going to the Santa Fe Opera. Rancho de Chimayo has been open continously since 1975. It's their 60th year. Florence Jaramillo is still the owner despite being 95 years young. They offer classic New Mexican dishes that heavily use chiles but are not overloaded with cheese. I was served by Joshua. I started with a Herradura Silver Coin margarita. Very nice. I added a bowl of green chile stew made with their green chile. I got the 60th anniversary combination with a pork tamale wrapped in corn masa, rolled cheese enchilada, pinto beans, rice, beef taco and a fresh hot sopapilla. Large jug of wildflower honey on every table. A very nice meal. I noticed a fair numbers of locals and a few tourists like me. I came back the next evening. I had their Chimayo cocktail with Montezuma Gold tequila, apple cider, creme di cassis with a cinnamon sugar rim. My food was the Carne Adovada in red chile. This time I got 2 sopapillas. I added a local beer, Marble Brewing Double White IPA. Very nice. Despite the sopapillas, I got a caramel flan. I bought their 50th anniversary cookbook, wildflower honey, red & green chile powders and sauce, salsa in their inside store. Wonderful meals. read more

Hadn't been here in a couple of years while visiting as I was disappointed with our (lunch) meals. This time around we decided to have dinner and it was a much better experience! We started off with the chips and salsa (lots of chips, but they charge now: 5.45)! My mom and BFF ordered the chile rellenos and I ordered the stuffed sopaipilla with shredded chicken (breast). I got mine with Xmas (red and green chile) and the rellenos automatically come with green (assuming you ask for red otherwise). Both were very flavorful with the green being hotter. At first glance, everything on the menu seems pricey; however, the portions are HUGE! You also get a complimentary basket of sopaipillas and our server gave us a total of six so we took some home. When we received our check, it was 85 bucks via debit/credit card & 82 bucks cash (not including a tip) which wasn't bad for three people! The only cons about our visit was the service was very slow, but our server was very nice and kind! The 2nd con was I the extra surcharge to use a debit/credit card. I understand merchants have to pay a fee for the service of offering this payment method, but that's a cost of doing business and they shouldn't pass this on to their customers. Been coming here for several years. But we are sad that, with the passing of Mrs. Jaramillo, the decision was apparently made to no longer allow dogs onto the patio. First thing to over come is finding the restaurant. That took us several tries before we realized we kept driving by the driveway. The restaurant is tucked into an off the beaten path road. Ambiance was really pretty cool. We were happy that we had reservations because for Saturday afternoon, it was packed! We were seated in the greenhouse area. This place is extremely disappointing and I've had better frozen Mexican TV dinners. $73 for 2 drinks and 2 anniversary specials which was some of the most flavorless and mediocre Mexican food I've had in ages. My husband said the sopapilla was good. The service was prompt and efficient. The food came out of the kitchen at such speed that the Anniversary special had to have been pre-plated and it showed in the tepid temperature and very sloppy presentation. We read about this restaurant in the official visitors guide under the day trips section. We took the scenic high road to Taos and had lunch here. There is plenty of parking. We were greeted and told it would be a 20 to 30 minute wait so we looked in the gift shop and went to the bar to have a drink. They sell local Santa Fe brewed beer at a reasonable price. They have lots of tables inside and on the patio. I ordered the stuffed sopaipilla with chicken smothered in cheese and Christmas chile. It also came with a large helping of creamy guacamole. It was the size of a small island, wow! It was so delicious I ate the entire thing and I was stuffed for the rest of the day! My spouse got the carne adovada burrito. It was big and delicious as well! Our meals also came with a sopaipilla each. After we received our bill it was great that we could scan the QR code and pay with Apple Pay making it quick and easy. In Santa Fe and was looking for a dining adventure in the area. Rancho De Chemayo is on the way to Taos and a previous James Beard award winner. This seemed like a good option for a fun evening off the beaten trail. 28 miles later we arrived at Rancho De Cheymayo at this beautiful old house that looked like it was straight out of a movie set. We were seated outside on the upper patio. The weather was perfect and had a hint of cooler breezes. We ordered the green chili shrimp enchiladas and black beans. The beef tostados were also ordered with refried beans and rice. The chips and spicy salsa were good and had a nice bite. The shrimp enchiladas was good and a bit spicy. The beans were good but the rice was dry and without flavor. The staff was attentive and helpful navigating the large menu. Rancho De Chemayo has been a pillar of the community for over 50 years. The building and landscaping is impressive. The food, I found to be ok, but not flavorful. I did not feel a need to return to taste other choices on the vast menu. Reservations are coveted and must have. I am glad we spent the time and an effort to try this iconic establishment. Perhaps, I ordered the wrong meal. This place hands down has the coolest atmosphere! When you walk onto the restaurant's beautiful grounds you are greeted by the sweetest sculpture garden and the lovely hanging red chile pepper ristras that serve as a symbol of welcome. When you walk into the restaurant, you are greeted by the hostess dressed in traditional colorful skirt and billowing white blouse. There are so many rooms with so many different vibes that you could visit half a dozen times and probably get an entirely new perspective. There are rooms with lots of windows and there are rooms that a bit more cavernous. We were seated in one of the open rooms with tons of windows and were immediately brought fresh chips and salsa. The chips were not overly salted and were delicious accompanied by the fresh salsa. I bought some of the salsa in the gift shop to take home, along with many other goodies. I ordered the prickly pear margarita and it was nice and refreshing; but it could have been a bit stronger and more tart than sweet. I would probably just go for the house margarita or perhaps the spicy margarita next time (and there WILL be a next time). My husband ordered the burrito de carne with chicken and "whole beans" instead of refried beans. I ordered the carne adovada burrito with refried beans. Both of the plates were served with delicous spanish rice and a little side salad (very small) that added a pop of color to the plates. The dishes were gorgeous and the food was really clean and flavorful and you could tell that the food was made from scratch. The beautiful shredded pork roast with adovada sauce tasted like something you would have in a traditional Mexican home. So very good. I really enjoyed the refried beans and thought my husband's whole beans were very good too. The other reviews indicate that there is no air conditioning in the restaurant and that is true. However, we visited on a sunny Sunday afternoon in late September and were very comfortable. One should plan accordingly based on their "sensibilities." I bought jars of green chile sauce and salsa, as well as ground red chili powder and ground green chili powder. I have used the red chili in a pot of white beans and they had a bit of a kick (I bought the mild) so be warned. When the meals finally arrived the server spilled a bowl of salsa on the table and left it there until I finally asked her to clean it up. After all that, the food was unremarkable at best. This placed totally sucked, they have zero customer service skill's, and I don't know what clown was in that kitchen that was by far the worst plate I was ever served in a restaurant. Stopped at Rancho De Chimayo on a weekday afternoon. The dinner service was just starting, so no wait. Start with the location, about 15 minutes outside Espanola or a little under an hour from Taos. Picturesque adobe in a beautiful setting. The hostess was friendly, got us seated quickly and our server was right behind. Oyr server was friendly and knowledgeable. Food was great, from the trio appetizer (chips, Guac, salsa and queso) to the carne adavado, enchiladas, tamales and finally pork flautists. All fresh and well prepared. The adavado was just the right amount of heat and the port fell apart on the fork. The masa on the tamales was exceptional. I really liked the posole as a side. Sopaipilla and honey is part of every meal. Desert was flan, which was smooth and rich. There's a cute jewelry store on site, a gift shop and wonderful area outside to take in the natural beauty. It's kind of a strange thing. I've lived in Santa Fe now for 34 years and only just gotten to the Rancho de Chimayo for dinner and I must say I was sad to be so disappointed. Rancho is indeed a very comfortable, quaint and picturesque venue. It is pretty far back into the countryside so it's a destination restaurant. The architecture is pure NNM: adobe exterior, appropriately and tastefully decorated. It's is larger inside than you'd expect, and there are several outside or semi-outside dining areas. It's lovely, to deal in cliches. Some drives out from Santa Fe are picturesque and scenic. Others travel though depressing poverty. We were greeted cheerfully enough and shown to our table (reservations are encouraged). Service was initially slow, and we waited a while for our waiter to fund us. Past that, it was prompt and solicitous. Everything came out promptly, and our water glasses were kept full. The chips and a salsa (which you do pay for here) were very good, particularly the red salsa. Just enough kick, thick in texture and adequately spiced. For my entre I had the Combinacion Traditionale - a pork tamale, an enchilada and a crisp taco. The tamale and the enchilada were covered with New Mexican red chile, which is ubiquitous in NNM cuisine. It varies from restaurant to restaurant. Rancho's was superb - thick, full of chile flavor with enough added spices to deepen its complexity. The tamale was well executed - not encased in a metric ton of masa. The meat was well spiced but not too spicey. Very savory. The same applied to the enchilada - everything well crafted. The taco was a disappointment though. The ground beef was dry and lacked any intensity. Applying some of the red salsa to it only marginally improved it. And that shouldn't have been necessary. The side of rice was hard and undercooked, and the beans were average. All in all, a bit disappointing given their reputation and the James Beard Award history. OK, so looking at all the reviews, it seems to depend on the time and the season you go, which will depend on the quality of food you get or how crowded it is in the restaurant. That makes sense, right? It is what it is, I guess... but after looking at other reviews, I will say this. I would never be dumb enough to order the trout almondine there and then comment that it's maybe too dry...in the middle of summer. Seriously? Did you think that they would go down and catch a warm water trout in the nearby lake and serve it fresh for you? Here's a hint... There's no such thing as a warm water trout. Stop ordering trout in the summertime! OK, I digress a bit... Personally, I have always enjoyed the food here. It is classic Northern New Mexico food. I'm not sure how you can mess that up real bad (unless you are so high maintenance that you are never going to be pleased anyway...or if you are so pretentious that you refer to yourself as a "Foodie"...gimme a break!)...and I'm not sure how you can dress it up real well, although a couple of the fancy places near the plaza try that to some success. But I'm not (ever) in the mood to spend $200 for a plate of New Mexican food. Seriously, what you come to Rancho de Chimayo for, is a really cool setting in a really interesting area that is really remote, quiet and peaceful. I live only a couple miles away, so it's not a stretch for me... And I've been there many times. Again, the food is always perfectly adequate NNM food, and if you have a couple of their super strong margaritas and (pay for!) the chips and salsa, with an entrée, you will get out of there for around $110/$120 for a couple. Not bad, right? OK, so why the three stars? This has happened to me again...maybe the fifth of the dozen times I've been here since I've lived here, so the camel's back finally broke....sorry! I almost always go on a weekday, and I almost always go before the dinner rush. It's the advantage of living close by. OK, so go in, ask for a table for two, get greeted by one of the lovely hostesses or waitresses, and get taken back to your table... pass by the very sour looking owner or manager sitting at her desk, whoever she is... But she has a business to run, so, whatever! More often than not, we get seated in the greenhouse (of the twelve times...we were seated twice in the main dining room, once in a side room off the retail space, and the other nine times in the greenhouse. Not a problem... It's lovely, and it's currently decorated for Valentine's Day. But here is where they lose two stars, five out of 12 times. Well, forever now... For some bizarre reason... And I understand restaurant zoning for serving staff tables, I'm not an idiot ... but if there is one couple sitting inside that greenhouse when we arrive, we are always seated RIGHT NEXT TO that couple. Then, 15 or 20 minutes later, the next couple or group is seated RIGHT NEXT TO US, and so on, and so on. On my last particular night, the greenhouse never filled up... Maybe four tables... But we were all grouped together - over two different server's zones - so we could hear every single conversation and practically touch each other. So much so, that the woman behind me was jealous of my beautiful flowers on the table, so I reached over and gave her mine because she didn't have the Valentine's Day carnations on her table. She was grateful, I was gracious, but I was annoyed as hell! I tried to explain this unnecessary crowding to the hostess, and she looked at me with a blank smile, as if I were speaking kryptonian, so I knew it would fall on deaf ears, as it has the previous four times this has happened to me and I have commented about it... Every time. All I'm saying is, if you like to go early as I do, and HOPE to have even a relatively quiet or private conversation while you're dining, it's not going to happen for you. You will be seated next to whomever is there regardless of the vast amount of space in the restaurant. If you ask to be moved by one table, you will set a vortex in motion, which will throw the space time continuum completely out of balance, and your hostess will short circuit and probably fall over in front of you. Probably because the grumpy looking lady behind the desk is staring at her and making sure that she doesn't breach protocol. To me, that is bad ...no... it is ridiculously inconsiderate customer service... and for that, Rancho de Chimayo will ALWAYS lose two stars. read more

We made a reservation for a party of 5 before coming because of the size of our group, but there were plenty of walk ins as well on a Friday afternoon. We made our reservation by calling them a few days in advance. We admired their relaxed environment and small gift shop. Our table shared the Appetizer trio, which was their house chips plus their salsa, queso and guacamole. All were very good, my favorite was the queso. Chips and dip are a tried and true opener. I ordered a spicy margarita which came with a tajin rim to accompany by Combinacion picante. The margarita was wonderful-it was balanced well and it had a nice kick to it. It was hard to pick an entree so getting a little bit of everything was the right call here. My favorite item of this dish was the carne adovada, but everything it featured was wonderful. This is very sad. This restaurant used to be a classic - part of the New Mexico magic. Years ago, the food was incredibly delicious, atmosphere was good, and the staff splendid! Went yesterday, three people, total bill was $98 including a $15 tip. The tablecloth was dirty. The food was awful, and the wait staff were rude, very rude. The food was barely warm and had very little flavor. It was slopped together. The server was impatient, and right before we finished she rudely asked us if we were going to go or were we going to keep hanging out. Terribly disappointing. Nothing like it used to be. Will not be returning to Rancho De Chamayo restaurant. read more

My first time to enjoy this iconic restaurant. The traditional new Mexican food was delicious. Enjoyed eating outdoors on one of the patio/terraces. Loved the sopapillas served with honey. I will definitely return the next time I visit the area. read more
