Before yesterday this was my go-to TexMex when visiting Conroe and would have received four stars minimum. Went for a late lunch/early dinner on Saturday. As always the service was prompt and the staff very attentive. If I could score just the service they would have easily earned five stars yesterday. To the issues: The "jumbo Patron" margarita was short on tequila and definitely not "jumbo" unless compared to a child's cup. The queso dip raised an interesting question we spent some time debating: What would you dilute theater nacho sauce with to achieve the queso we were served? For context, years ago I had my first TexMex queso at Rancho Grande and while it was never super thick it was always cheesy. We ordered it with ground beef. Received a side plate with something akin to ground beef that was probably in contact with chili seasoning at some point. I ordered the chimichanga with beef (I hadn't seen the queso yet) and it was just...bland. My daughter had the beef tacos and a quesadilla. She loved the quesadilla and left all but one bite of the tacos It may be a surprise, but I am not done with Rancho Grande. This experience was so different from all the past that I want to try again. Hopefully someone was making poor choices about ingredients and preparation that day. So if anyone from the restaurant reads these reviews, a rave review is yours for just getting back to the quality of food that has been served in the past. read more

Food: The carne guisada was some of the best I've had, I could eat a whole bowl of it by itself! My husband had the Mike Special and was very satisfied with the flavor profile. The chili con queso is pretty large though, even with the two of us we didn't finish it. Service: Top notch! Rancho Grande has the charm and taste of authentic Mexican cuisine. The salsa is served warm and has a nice kick. Fajita chicken and beef are great as is the pork carnitas. Rice, beans and queso are very good. All employees were very friendly and courteous. Cherry on top was ice cream dispenser of chocolate and vanilla and swirl with a cone. This place is always so busy looking that I finally had to investigate. From the entryway, you know you're getting authentic food. Smells of cilantro and peppers catch your attention immediately. The FIRST thing I taste at any Mexican restaurant are chips and salsa. These were exactly what I was hoping for. The salsa was thick yet juicy with chunks of tomato, onion and peppers. The top had a light cilantro garnish, a little different but really good. Chips were light but strong, necessary since the salsa is so chunky. I settled on ordering the shrimp quesadilla appetizers, 1/2 plate. Wanted fish tacos but NOT with tilapia . My quesadillas were great too. I got 4 in that 1/2 order, rice and beans. They were suuuuuper cheesy and I appreciate such indulgences. My daughter raved on the Cherry Coke. It came with a couple cherries and she swore they added the cherry flavoring directly. Happy Hour was $2 domestic and $2.50 import, (yuuuup, I enjoyed those bud lights with 2 fresh lime chunks per beer!). read more
