Bun Rieu: 2 Stars ** I was expecting for a bowl of bun rieu shown in the Yelp pictures just less than one year ago. The one we had was more like a vegetarian one. I did not see tomatoes, minced pork, nor pork blood. I called and figured they no longer put pork blood in them but did not replace with any other proteins. If you are looking for a vegetarian dish with very little proteins, this could be it. Oh, they did include one tiny piece of sparerib. The extra star that I gave was only for the broth. It was not too salty and was flavorful. It could have been better if they can add tomatoes, eggs and some shrimps. I followed this place to Alameda after their Oakland location was destroyed in a fire. The Bun Bo Hue soup no longer has duck blood cubes in it which was sad for me because I loved it but it's still very good. The beef stew with egg noodles is very hearty and the broth is very well-balanced with spices. Not too greasy and very filling. I love the combo banh mi the most, it's my favorite one and I love the pho with brisket and tendon. The meat is always tender and delicious. The tendon is the right texture and softness. They never make their broth too salty like in some places and it's very clear and soothing. Both the chicken and beef pho selections are solid. The service is always so warm and welcoming, it makes me feel so good to eat there like I am eating with family and I like supporting their business especially since Tu Tai 2 closed down. Parking is super convenient and plentiful and I have never had to wait to be seated. Whenever I am desperate to feel better after a night of overindulging, my first thought is to head to Rang Dong. read more

Great spot for Vietnamese food in Oakland Chinatown. The menu can be overwhelming--there are a ton of items on the menu. I usually stick to the noodle soups. The BBH and bun rieu are yummy. I tried one of the broken rice dishes with egg cake and thought it was just OK. We were able to order quickly and got our food quickly. Parking is definitely a pain on the weekends since the restaurant is in the heart of Chinatown. It wasn't very busy on a Sunday around 1, which was nice. read more

Please bring back your old recipes! I'm glad the restaurant didn't close down, but the food is clearly not the same. I'm not sure what's going on, perhaps a different chef? Their tomatoey Bun Rieu use to be my fav in the east bay, but it's now lacking in flavor. It makes me sad because I ate at their Chinatown location since I was a kid. Also had their Bun Bo Hue recently which was just average as well. The soups use to be so rich and the ingredients more complex and flavorful. The pork pieces are smaller now and I had a piece of pork leg in the bun bo hue that was tough and inedible. I hope they figure out their dishes soon so I can experience the same tastes. Ordered from door dash. The hoisin sauce contained had a dead bug on the outside. Another small bug (identical) appeared on my table. Not sure if it came from the food. My last night on this most recent trip back to the Bay Area, I was craving soup because of all the rain and storm that passed by. Due to the time that I could have dinner, I was limited on places open after work. Thankfully Yelp found me this place to check out. This restaurant is located in Chinatown Oakland and for Chinatown, this place is really clean. The service here was also very good. The servers were very attentive and friendly. I came here with my college friend so that we could chill and sample more items off the menu. We shared the Beef Carpaccio and he ordered their Bun Rieu while I ordered their Bun Bo Hue. The Beef Carpaccio was delicious! Only thing I would change is ordering it without ginger next time. Veggies that came out were very small in portion. It was enough for just one of us. The Bun Bo Hue wasn't great but it was good and the portion size was a little smaller than what I'm accustomed to. My friend said the Bun Rieu was 3.5 out of 5. Without the appetizer, I think that I would have left still pretty hungry. After eating everything, we both left content. We could have eaten more but didn't want to order more since they were closing. Nice clean restaurant open relatively late offering hot soup. I've tried Rang Dong when they were out in Oakland and remembered the pho being extra good. The soup was piping hot which is my jam. Basically any soup that will burn my mouth, I like. Anyway, we've tried their pho, bun rieu, and banh cuon in Oakland. The pho and banh cuon were hella good at the time. The bun rieu was meh though, especially since my mom makes a bomb bun rieu. So having this experience coupled with reading their reviews, I knew it would be a hit or miss coming to the alameda location. Also, I came here for the banh mi right in the beginning of the pandemic and the chicken banh mi was pretty crappy (sorry, I could barely finish it that day). The two star is really for today's pho. First of all, the soup is still served piping hot (thank you!). But besides the piping hot soup, the rest was subpar. Let's start with the noodles. The noodles weren't the fresh made pho noodles. It was dried pho noodles that you can get at ranch 99. Cutting cost on the noodles when that's supposed to be the main part of the pho dish is a no no, but they did it. So no chewy Al dente noodles, onto the meat. I always order just rare beef on the side without extra charge, but rang dong is different from other pho places. You get charged an extra dollar for asking to put the beef on the side. Wow, how creative?! Anyway, I don't care about the extra charge as much as the quality of the meat. Well, the beef was pale in color which was odd, but I thought nothing of it until I started tasting a funk. It didn't taste fresh, but I powered through it knowing it was a $16 bowl of pho. I barely drank the soup and could care less that I didn't finish the noodles. I'm just sad that I ate a bowl of pho that wasn't that good. When I eat out, I try to find the best. Unfortunately, rang dong in alameda isn't as good as rang dong in Oakland. That's sad cuz the new restaurant has plenty of natural light and feels welcoming. The Oakland restaurant was pretty dark and dirty feeling. It felt more like a underground place for doing those things. Anyway, I wish them luck and maybe the cashier lady should be doing both the register and pick veggies at the same time. That was pretty gross. We had 2 dishes: the bun rieu and the broken rice dish w pork chops, egg cake, and shrimp cake. The flavors were fantastic but sadly each dish was lacking in important ways. The bun rieu flavors were on point (similar to how my mom cooks it) but it barely had any meat. There were a couple pieces of tofu, one pork rib, and a few sprinkles of shrimp/pork meatball. The dish was mostly broth and noodles. I also asked them to leave out the pork blood which they forgot to do. The pork chop rice dish was excellent. I loved that they charcoal-grilled the the pork, which is hard to find. The egg cake was good, but the shrimp cake was kind of oily. Like the bun rieu, this dish could have had more meat. It was mostly rice. The small dish of broth that came with the dish was extremely bland. The restaurant is quite cold. I came here in the afternoon and it was pretty busy but there were lots of seats in the restaurant. The place is located near a lot of other Asian restaurants and boba places since it's in china town too. I ordered the bun rieu and fresh lemonade and the bun rieu was really good. The noodles were nice and a good chewy and the soup tasted very fresh and wasn't overly thick. The meat fell right off the bone and the tomatoes were a good plus with the noodles. The fresh lemonade also tasted good but it did cost $4.50, so kind of on the expensive side. I'd definitely recommend my friends to try this place out! read more

I think its mediocre for the price, but what really stood out to me was the service, which is why I have given Rang Dong 4 stars. They have given best service I have ever gotten. The prices here were expensive for me, $12+ and up per entree and considering the meh decor and lack of lighting to save on energy I felt a little eh about paying up when the ambiance could be a bit better. Maybe I'm being a bit mean but if its gonna be a bit hole in the wall, the prices could be a bit lower. My friend and I both ordered the grilled shrimp and grilled chicken vermicelli and the eggroll for appetizer. The shrimp is over cooked and the chicken is bland and dry. They did a good job on the sauce though. The sauce has the perfect sweetness and flavor and went really well with the noodle. The eggroll is a ripped off. They charge $6-7 for two piece of eggrolls. If they were shrimp eggrolls then I understand the pricing. As for the taste, it's just mediocre, nothing special and won't harm not having it. We'd read that Rang Dong moved into an available space in Alameda after a fire in their Oakland location closed them down. Times are tough, so we thought we'd give them a try for take-out. When we went into the store front, we were greeted warmly & thanked just for walking through the door. The menu in the new location is limited, but we plenty of choices. Our order was ready quickly, and did not disappoint. It was delicious! Fresh ingredients, great flavors. Do make sure to ask about ingredients if you have any limitations. The new menu doesn't list every ingredient in a recipe, but they were happy to leave the jalapeños out when asked for "not spicey." I had bun tom nuong, and my wife the pho tai chin. I ordered the bun bo hue and the pork bun. The bun bo hue was packed with flavor. The broth was rich with meatiness and spice. Also, it wasn't very oily at all. There was quite a bit of brisket. No pork blood. The pork bun was also excellent. The pork was sliced thinly and had plenty of sear. The marinade was balanced - not too sweet. COVID-19 takeout was packed perfectly. Noodles packed separately, still warm, and no mushiness or sogginess. I want to try the bun rieu, pho, and banh mi next.
