Rangoon has been on my list for soo long and I am excited that I was able finally stop in for lunch. Had the full experience with some colorful characters from Chinatown to round out the experience but that did not take away from the soul of Rangoon. Reminded me of authentic food I had in Myanmar but with an elevated flair. The spice level was perfect and each ingredient really stood out. Tried the most popular items but need to return to sample a bit more! Two thumbs up thus far!

Flavorful, textured beyond belief, and such an exquisite dining experience. Highly recommend for big groups, and if you want some really elevated South East Asian dishes. It was my first time having Burmese food, and it was delicious. Service was prompt, charming and made great recommendations. 10/10

Food was so amazing. One entree is enough to serve a whole family of 4. Drinks are BOMB. I WILL BE GOING BACK..... After I'm finally not feeling stuffed from eating all the amazing food we ordered. Omg 10/10. Server was so sweet to us, just perfect.

Second time back and honestly... I think this is entering my regular rotation! Food: - Brussel sprouts with vegetables - sooo yum! Great portion size, perfectly seasoned, just delicious. - Burmese shrimp kebat - absolutely divine. I will order this 10 more times. The shrimp portion is generous, the curry sauce is unreal, and the flavor is out of this world! It's also got a perfect spice level Trust me, you need this. - Ginger salad - they had to modify this salad a lot because of my food intolerances so I don't feel like I got the full experience. It was fine and fresh, but nothing special. I think you should get this as intended and judge for yourself. I love this restaurant and I will say that they are AMAZING with food allergies/sensitivities. So kind, so chill, so accommodating. Super unique cuisine and absolutely worth trying! Please go!

This restaurant was plugged to me by a friend who likes to be worldly and adventurous (read: trying different cultural cuisines), descriptors reflecting a personality which may very well be a discussion for another day. Nonetheless, this friend steered us in the right direction as the food here stayed true to the culinary standard of Southeast Asia. My party of four ordered the platha (flatbread), the pineapple fried rice, the nan gyi thoke, the garlic noodle, the myeik pan fried noodle, the Burmese pumpkin stew, and the Rangoon tea leaf salad. All of these items were quite delicious, and also our eyes were bigger than our stomachs. These dishes, however, become the type of leftovers you might argue over. The nan gyi thoke was delightful and comforting, and we naturally had no leftovers of this. Myeik pan fried noodles tasted to me like a Burmese analogue to pad Thai, with its familiar taste profile. Everything else was also delicious and very much worth trying. The most difficult part of eating here was deciding which items to try. Perhaps, I will need to return here to eat through more of the menu.

Came here because free feasting my way through Hawaii, needed something with vegetables-that's still delicious! Had a hankering for tea leaf salad. Daughter clearly needed veggies too since she wanted tofu instead of meat! We had the Burmese chicken noodle stew , a basil tofu dish and my longed for tea leaf salad! Service was friendly and fast, vibes were nice too . We came here four years ago last trip to HI and it was great both times!

Let's talk about the most surprising recommendation I've got On-Island! My co-worker recommended I come to Rangoon because I told her I was looking to try something new. The vibe when you walk in is very casual with different genres of music playing throughout the meal. We were greeted by our server, Anna, who was super attentive throughout the meal. We ordered the Mango Salad, Myeik Pan Fried Noodles, Pork Belly with Mustard Greens and a side of coconut rice. We ordered thinking we would have enough to take home later but the flavors were so good, we ended up eating everything! The mango salad was so refreshing, with a sweet and salty kick with every bite, the fried noodles were savory and fresh with a hint of squeezed lemon on top, and the pork belly with mustard greens and side of coconut rice was my winner of the night. The flavors were so unique!! It's been a couple days since we visited and I still can't get the salad dressing flavor out of my head. We also got some cocktails (not pictured) but if you're looking for a new spot to come and have some great food, come to Rangoon! 10/10 will be coming back again

Unique, flavorful There are so many different Burmese food dishes to sample here: salads, curry's, soup, noodles We loved the Mango salad; so much flavor we should have bought two of these two share. The Mo Hin Ga was the national dish of Burma and was so savory. Similar to pho but I enjoyed it even more. Also enjoyed the Burmese Curry, Pineapple fried rice. The Shan noodles we would likely skip next time; lacked in flavor. Highly recommend for people looking for authentic delicious SE Asian food !

This was the spot that was picked for my bro-in-law's birthday. Only a few of the 7 of us had dined here before. It was my first time. We made a reservation which I would recommend if you're going at normal meal times. We ordered: Mango Salad $18 Tea Leaf Salad $18 Burmese Samusas $15 Salt and Pepper Calamari$17 Burmese Curry with Potatoes w/chicken $18 Garlic Noodle $18 Myek Pan Fried Noodle $19 Basil Stir Fry w/beef $20 Eggplant Curry $17 Rangoon Fried Rice $18 Lemongrass Prawns $18 For the most part all of the food was really good. Lots of good flavors in every bite. Our least favorite and probably the only thing we wouldn't order again was the Lemongrass Prawns. They are a whole shrimp which isn't an issue. I don't mind separating the head from the tail and they were large but we didn't like the sauce that covered them. I LOVED the eggplant curry. The eggplant melted in my mouth and the curry was delicious. I ate the leftovers for lunch that week and got to relive the experience. The salads were both good and fresh. The calamari was nice. Our other favorite was the Myek pan fried noodle. It had shrimp, chicken and calamari in it but it was just so full of flavor. If I lived closer that would be a meal I'd eat weekly. Restaurant is nicely laid out and the staff were very friendly and helpful when navigating the menu. We'll definitely be back.

This place is wonderful. Servers were friendly helpful and knowledgeable. We had the tofu appetizer which was tasty and delightful...I love anything with makrut lime leaves. The tea salad was a fantastic mix of flavors and textures. The restaurant interior is lovely.

This is my first time trying Burmese food. Now I want to book a trip to Myanmar. Two words come to mind clean and bright. Those are the kind of flavors you can expect. The crispy tofu with salad stuffing was very delicious and refreshing fried tofu stuffed with cabbage and other goodies. The tea salad was another one of my favorites, fermented tea leaves tossed with cabbage, some peanuts. Fried garlic and tomatoes was such a refreshing dish. Definitely a must order when you visit here. The fried calamari was perfect, crispy, but very late with jalapeños and other peppers and nice chili dipping sauce. Plenty of street parking also a big city parking lot about half a block away. Service was impeccable since this was our first time here our server made great recommendations. Definitely be back.

First of all, the staff is amazing. The hostess, the bartender, the waitress, the food runners, they were all attentive and friendly. The vibes inside were mellow and relaxed, there was no pressure to order or eat quickly. The drinks were strong and tasty. We didn't have reservations but were seated almost immediately on a Friday evening (maybe the first warning sign?). I recommend making reservations if you have a group larger than 2 people. Now the food, eh. It was bland. The ingredients were there, but just barely. I called it an introduction to Asian flavors. Nothing had spice which is weird because I could see the peppers used. I recommend the restaurant solely for the drinks and vibes. Maybe get food elsewhere.

Ask the Community - Rangoon Burmese Kitchen

    Is this restaurant dog friendly?

I have never seen any dogs there so I’m not sure. But a service dog is welcome anywhere.

Do they ever pick up their phone?

Yes, but not in between lunch and dinner.

Where is parking for this place?

Street parking. And there are at least two Chinatown lots or garages within a few blocks.

I called the number listed but it goes straight to a non-existent voicemail box. I've tried both during business hours and outside of it but no luck. Any other suggestions?

I just posted menu photos with the current phone number. June 2021.

What's the dress code like, casual?

    Yes, can be casual!

Do they have a different phone number? I've been trying to make a reservation and the line goes straight to voicemail? The voicemail isn't set up but thanks to Dana I kept trying and got through! Thanks!

It's the same phone number on their website. You might have to try calling multiple times in a row before they answer. If you call before they open, it will go to voicemail. Call only during the open hours.

Can you bring your your own beer ? Corkage?

Yes it's BYOB. Not sure what the corkage fee is but they provide you with glasses too if needed

Is the food served family style like in Chinese restaurants?

Yes it is. The servings are good sized enough for 5-6 people with multiple dishes.

    What is corkage fee?

    BYOB. No corking fee.

    Is Parking available?

No. Try to find street parking or park in one of the nearby municipal lots.

Are they still open called three days?

    Yes Call now

    Is it BYOB here?

They are no longer BYOB and now offer a cocktail menu and have a $12 corkage fee.

    Where to park?

I usually like to park at Smith-Beretania municipal parking lot, the Maunakea Municipal Parking lot or the Chinatown Gateway Plaza.

Review for Indochine 1938…read more Outstanding food and service undermined by unacceptable cigar smoke exposure. We've dined here 10-12 times over the years (including during COVID) and have always had wonderful experiences--until this visit. First, a high five to the chef, kitchen, servers, and bussers. The food was excellent, our server's recommendations were spot on, and the team is clearly working hard under pressure. Even the manager and host, though overwhelmed, were trying to accommodate. However, the cigar smoke situation is unacceptable in a dining environment. We were offered outdoor seating and immediately encountered active cigar smoking. While it may be noted somewhere on the menu, it is not clearly communicated or reasonably expected, especially for returning guests who have never experienced this here before. Even inside, the layout allows smoke to drift into the dining area. By the end of the evening--and into the next morning--I experienced significant allergy symptoms directly tied to that exposure. As we were leaving, other guests were asking where the smoke was coming from--only to see people actively smoking right at the entrance. This is where ownership needs to step in. For a public-facing restaurant, this raises concerns about guest safety, basic dining standards, and potential compliance with local smoking ordinances. At minimum, there needs to be clear separation, ventilation, and enforcement--especially at the entrance. People can absolutely make their own choices--but guests also deserve to clearly know what they're walking into. If there is going to be active cigar or cigarette smoke as part of the environment, that should be clearly disclosed upfront, not discovered after being seated. For those with allergies, asthma, or sensitivities to smoke--this may not be the right environment, and that's important to know ahead of time. Bottom line: Your staff and kitchen are doing everything right--but they are being undermined by an avoidable environmental issue. We would return--but only if this is addressed.

For the dishes we knew would be a hit, we ordered doubles. The clear favorites at the table were the imperial rolls, crab cakes, mushroom curry, noodles, and the ribs. The vibe is warm and really fits the restaurant's name, with a cozy 1930s feel. And bonus points from me for the comfortable seating--I'm always a fan of a place where you can actually relax and enjoy your meal. Overall, this is definitely one to add to your must-try list. This family owned and operated neighborhood restaurant serves authentic Thai food made with traditional recipes passed down through the generations, cooked with skill and love, and served with joy and Aloha. The restaurant is clean and beautifully decorated. It features an open kitchen and you can watch the chefs, who hail from Thailand and Laos, cook up crave-worthy culinary creations. The sounds of sizzling woks and the fragrance of fresh herbs and spices exude like exotic temptations from the kitchen heightening the dining experience. But, the food is just as appetizing if you enjoy it to-go, which is what we typically do. Either way, service is exceptionally efficient and exceedingly courteous. Chiang Mai is more than just serving Thai food, they are about sharing their culture with the community. Now about the food...top-notch in every way. I especially enjoy that they offer many vegetarian and pescatarian dishes. Their vegetarian spring rolls are crunchy and savory, served with fresh veggies it's a brilliant start to a meal or a perfect light meal by themselves. The Pad Thai with tofu is delicate yet flavorsome. And the curry veggie noodles is an aromatic and truly comforting dish. I get this if I can't decide between noodles and curry.
