I took my parents here as mom is looking more for vegetarian options . They have tried Burmese food . I'm glad to say that the Burmese food is almost on par with California. From my parents , they said it adds a freshness to their palette . Food wasn't as greasy . Staff were great and attentive with refilling water . Decor does transport you to South East Asia Located on Nuannu avenue , a primal location for walkability and other businesses . The only critique I have is the tea leaf salad . The lettuce isn't chopped as finely and it requires more tea to my taste. I also did not know there's a Burmese version of biryani . The food here was great! I tried the Rangoon tea leaf salad and it had fresh, unique flavors including garlic, jalapeño, and peanut. The coconut veggie curry was also amazing. I had enough leftovers to take home for another meal the next day so it wasn't bad on price! Sad to say but a little disappointed with tonight's dinner. Arrived for our 5 pm reservation only to find a dark unlocked restaurant But the best thing was we were able to meet the chef! Who greeted us, took our order and delivered our food. He also guaranteed that all the food served would be gluten free for our guest. He was the best. The food was a bit disappointing....starting with the water served at the table. The water tasted like disinfectant. Which when i did speak to the waitress, admitted that the staff was working on the disinfectant concentration so happily corrected the issue. My favorite tea leaf salad was so disappointing, tasteless and bland. Then the pea appetizer was so hard, i was afraid i might crack a tooth...so different from the past fluffy delicious puff pea confection. Different from the undercooked Brussel sprouts. Loved eating here before watching a show at the Hawaii Theater nearby. We had the fermented tea salad as well as a few other dishes. I need to come back and try a few more! During my visit here, my friend said this was his favorite restaurant to go to, and I can definitely see why. We tried their samusas, potato curry, fried tofu, and garlic noodles; everything was amazing. The servers are all super nice and attentive, and the ambiance is perfect for a nice dinner. I've never gone out of my way to write a bad review. Unfortunately we door dashed from here and there were hairs in multiple dishes. I'm more concerned because it was a delivery order and after the original pick up driver left cause it was taking too long for the food 50 minutes I called to see if the dasher was confused. Verbatim I told them don't worry about the timing and was just clarifying if the dasher was confused. Somehow two dishes ended up with hairs in it. Was this them being angry I called to clarify what was going on? Either way it's a huge health and safety concern. I have enjoyed the restaurant in the past and hope someone responds. read more

This place always has people in it and the decor looks very steam punk meets Indochine SEA so I was excited to try it. I'm not familiar with Burmese cuisine and it's not exactly mainstream so the servers are important to create the right experience. We were met, greeted and seated nicely and then as we looked through the menu, it got a little complicated. Also, I was very hungry, not a good state to order unfamiliar food. I ordered the beef pumpkin stew with Flatbread. My husband ordered the Phad Thai like noodles. We ordered drinks and water. After we got our water and the waitress left to put in our order, I remembered in my low blood sugar state I'd forgotten to order the green papaya salad. So I asked her if it was too late to add it, she said no problem. Our drinks arrived and then my stew, the bread, and noodles. No salad. She said it was coming up. Halfway through, still no salad. At this point I'd discovered that half the pumpkin chunks were raw, hard as a stone while the rest of the pieces were done to perfection, the sauce was a beautiful and tasty sauce along with tender meat cubes. I was confused as to how you can mix cooked and uncooked pumpkin in the same pot. It got me wondering about the kitchen, and not in a good way. How long had my sauce been in the slowcooker? Was the beef ok to eat? Still no salad when we were basically done. So I told the server that we didn't want the salad, she said it was fine. She walks over to the kitchen and calls out, forget the salad. The cook asks, they cancelled it? She says "yes". We then wait a very long time to get our bill. The bill comes with just a total. No itemized receipt. I didn't know this was legal. So we ask, did you take off the salad? She replies, I think so. The total seems very high for what we ordered so I ask her to tell us what the charges were to bring it to that total. She says she needs to go and double check. She walks back and says the salad you ordered and then didn't want was on there. She was not as friendly as when we first walked in. I was kind of speechless. Are they that dishonest? I said, well, we waited and asked about it and you told us 3 times it was coming. A salad. Nothing to cook, but I can see it might have gotten out of sequence since we added it to our initial order but you said it was ok. I also asked if you would take it off our bill since we were finished eating and it still hadn't come out. We left a 15% tip but I had an uneasy feeling in my stomach. It was like it was our fault we didn't get our food and then they try to charge us with a bill with only the total. I've never seen this before, do other restaurants just give you a slip with the total and expect you to pay and tip? If it was just the hard pumpkin pieces, I think I would give a solid 3 stars close to 4. But this is a dubious 3 stars and the experience raised more questions than comfort. I will try it again and see if the food and service are better and indicative of their true score. read more

Had an excellent meal at Rangoon Burmese Kitchen last night, the reason why I'm not giving 5 stars is that there were clearly some items that deserved a 5 star and some that deserved a 4 star, so if I could give 4.5 stars overall that would be appropriate. Another note: our waitress was a little surly, granted she seemed to be covering every table in the restaurant and she was very efficient but she was not particularly friendly shall we say. Now onto the food: - tea leaf salad, 5/5, super delicious, just how a tea leaf salad should be - mango salad, 4/5, good and nothing particularly special (matchsticks of mango, red pepper, other items) - platha with curry, 5/5 for the platha, 3/5 for the curry, we ended up ordering more bread to go with the red curry leftover from the lamb curry, that was an amazing combo - coconut curry with lamb - 5*/5, this was a favorite item for sure. The lamb chunks were tender and the curry was just right - not too spicy, very flavorful - burmese fish curry - 3/5, we ordered the mahi mahi and maybe that type of fish doesn't hold up as well in the curry. or maybe the curry flavors weren't as intense as the lamb red curry, in any case I would not order this one again - stir fried basil eggplant with fried tofu - 5*/5 another standout item, I could eat this again and again if I could! came also with some green pepper - myek pan fried noodle - 4/5, said it came with shrimp, chicken, calamari, we only saw one shrimp in the dish and did not observe any calamari. Tasty but disappointing for the lack of seafood as advertised - coconut rice - 4/5, I would have opted for plain rice so fully appreciate the flavors of the other dishes - indian rice - 4/5, same as above Parking was easy down the street, just don't stray one block over onto Hotel Street where things get a bit more dicey. I was excited to try Rangoon again since I remembered how flavorful the dishes were on my last visit. They do accept reservations, and it seems like you can also walk in and sit at the bar area (don't quote me on that!). The tables are set pretty close together, so it can feel a bit tight. Unfortunately, the timing of the dishes really took away from the experience this time. Our side dishes came out first, along with what we thought was the Burmese eggplant curry, but there was no eggplant in sight. When we asked the waitress, she acknowledged the dish we ordered and said there was a mishap with the ordering system. The disappointing part was that we had our sides with nothing to pair them with, and by the time the fish and actual eggplant curry came out, the sides were cold. My drink didn't arrive until halfway through the meal either. That said, the food was delicious (when it was warm). I would still go back again, hoping for a better experience next time. read more

First time trying Burmese food and this place knocked my socks off! Highly recommend the whole fish and the platha with curry dip. The platha bread is super flakey like something you'd get from a high end bakery and the curry was so delicious the table ate it so quickly. One friend mopped up every drop from the bowl. The whole fish was packed with flavor. I brought a small piece home for my son and he wished he had more. We will definitely return. The lamb in the biryani was so soft as were the morsels of chicken in the curries. I got the coconut curry and the house curry. My husband and son liked the house curry better. I thought both were nice and glad that I ordered them with chicken. I highly recommend the Brussel sprouts. It comes with salted fish or pork belly. We paid an up charge for both and I do not regret it. Perfectly cooked, even my husband ate it and he usually doesn't like Brussel sprouts. Flavors of curry, cardamom, allspice, fish sauce and turmeric are sprinkled throughout the dishes. We started with the BURMESE SAMUSA Hand wrapped with potato, onion, mint leaf, green pea, spices. Delicious interior. Potatoes were soft with a slight pungent onion flavor. The skin were super crispy and thinner than the Indian Samusa and a bit on the oily side. Loved the spicy garlic dipping sauce with a hint of sweetness. PLATHA & CURRY DIP Multi-layer buttery bread similar to naan bread except it's much thinner and instead of baked in a hot oven, the platha is pan fried. Served with coconut chicken. Another great starter. The multi - layer bread were thin, flaky and addictive. The curry coconut chicken dipping sauce was very coconut milk forward and could've been a bit thicker. KACHIN WHOLE FISH Bone in branzino marinated with Kachin traditional herbs. Steamed in banana leaf, chill, garlic, black pepper, prickly ash with vegetable. My fave dish of the meal. Super moist and flavorful with pronounced citrus and garlic. BIRYANI with Lamb Basmati rice, spices, light butter, raisins, tomato, mint, fried onion, cilantro, cashew nut, green pea baked in clay pot encased in thin buttery plates bread. An ideal family style rice dish. Fluffy ,nutty rice with fragrance of cardamon and cinnamon. I'm a lamb fan but here it was rather gamy. Although very tender. There are also options for chicken, beef or vegetables. The platha bread made for good little tortilla like wraps. RANGOON TEA LEAF SALAD Mixture of cabbage, fish sauce, garlic chip, beans, peanut, garlic, pillow split pea, green split pea sesame seed, sunflower seed, tomato, jalapeño, lime. The shredded cabbage got lost in the abundance of peanuts/seeds and made this salad into more of a nut salad dressed in fish sauce. Hence very crunchy in texture with pungent flavors of fermented tea and fish sauce. Good salad but a bit on the salty side for me. Next time I would ask for less fish sauce. BASIL CHICKEN Stir-fried with fresh basil, garlic, bell pepper, carrot, onion, ginger, sweet sauce. A good dish with rice but the least distinctive Burmese dish of the meal. I couldn't help but think that it tasted like any other Chinese stir fried chicken dish. Overall a very enjoyable meal that holds true to its Burmese roots. Friends raved about the Burmese food at Rangoon and took me there. I let them order because they had been there multiple times and had their favorites, Tea Leaf Salad, Mango salad, pumpkin pork stew, and fish curry. I picked chili chicken. Tea Leaf Salad was the clear winner of the bunch, Fermented tea leaves, romaine lettuce, tomato, jalapeño, and lime and lots of crunch from beans, peanuts, yellow and green split peas, sunflower and sesame seeds and garlic chips. Im not much of a salad eater but this is my kind of salad! Lots of texture doesn't taste over dressed or too healthy. A definite must try! Mango salad was also good but more toward what I'd consider a normal (but fancy) salad. More refreshing from the mango and the mint, there's also cabbage, red onion, red bell peppers, fried onions and coriander, and sprouts, there was some crunch from cashews and peanuts. There was some fish sauce which I don't like but I couldn't taste or smell it so I enjoyed it. Pumkin stew with pork was very good, I didn't really taste any pumpkin but I was told there were some cooked down pieces, I guess my friends got them all before I did.. LOL. It's braised with locally grown pumpkin, onion, garlic, ginger and Burmese spices. The pork was very tender, you won't need a knife. Burmese fish curry. Red curry sauce, tomato, marsala, tamarind and cilantro, you can choose salmon, red snapper or mahi mahi. We chose red snapper, think I woulda chose mahi mahi, but it was not my choice. This was my least favorite dish, still very good, I just liked the other dishes better. Chili Chicken, Sliced chicken, jalapeno, dried chili, chili flakes, garlic, ginger, onion, green onion, and coriander tossed in a wok. Reminded me of a Chinese stir fried dish. It was delicious, it had a nice spice to it but not overpowering. Coconut rice was a nice addition to all the Currys and stews to soak up all the sauces. I didn't taste the coconut too much, but its worth trying. My first time having Burmese food, I loved it. Burma or Myanmar is located in south east Asia, between India, China, Laos and Thailand. The cuisine is its own thing, but the curries remind me of a more mild Indian food. Some items have fish sauce but much less than Thailand or Laos. While some reminded my of Chinese stir fries. So a bit of a mix of its surrounding countries but with restraint. It blew me away that my favorite dish was a salad. The place is located on the outskirts of China town so we found paid parking in an underground lot. Great food, terrible service. Lunch hours are stated from 11 to 2 pm. My friend and I arrived at 1:22 pm and the server said the kitchen was closing in 5 minutes so we needed to order fast. Hours should state 11 am to 1:30 pm if the kitchen closes at 1:30 pm. The food was delicious, but we were literally rushed out the door at 2:06 pm. The server dropped to go containers while we were still eating our food, then came over to take payment while we were still eating. Honestly, I'm disappointed in the terrible service and don't think I'll come back. The food is good, but not that good. There are plenty of great restaurants in Chinatown. It came with a chicken curry dipping sauce which was rich and heavy. It would have been better with a yogurt dip or something to clean the pallete. There was only 1 waitress for the entire restaurant. Our food came out 1 plate at a time so we all sat there waiting for the last plate before eating. By that time it was cold. Consistently high quality food It's a nice sit-down restaurant near Hawaii Theatre which makes it a great option before or after a show. She was craving Indian food, I'm always in the mood for Thai food, and we met in a middle for some good ol' Burmese food at Rangoon, a place that we've wanted to try for a little bit now. I get everyone's complaints about the subpar service here, it's slow even on a quiet Monday night, there's no sense of efficiency, but to be fair, there's only two servers here and they try their hardest from what we saw. We honestly loved how laxed it was, please leave us be, don't hover and we are okay with the food and the company of one another. Others, like tourists and angry folks might need a bit more customer service. Drinks: wife got a cocktail and it was beautifully presented, she stated it was tasty. Heineken for me, that came out a bit warm in a bottle, but it was fine. Food: Samusas were delicious, potato wrapped in spring roll wrapper and deep fried? Devoured. Mango salad was fresh, with unripened mangos, garlic, nuts and absolutely fresh, but just needs a little bit more dressing. Stuffed tofu needed a wet component to the dish. It was very dry, beautiful presentation though. The star of the show I say, was the snapper curry with coconut rice. Whoever cooks the curry here needs a raise pronto, it's rustic curry. It honestly reminded me of my grandmother's curry and I appreciated that. Just enough amount of spice and coconut milk, fish sauce was perfect, dried peppers were a nice touch. Will stop in for the curry in the future. The set up of the place is nice, not too loud, perfect music selection, enough space between each patron and private party section if you ever need. It was the first time I tried this eatery. I saw from fellow Yelpers that this is a sister restaurant to Dagon (which was on my list of places to try). This place is located in Chinatown close to Mark's garage. I love the look of this place inside - colorful umbrella style decor hung from the ceiling and a gong I'm the front of the restaurant. I remember when this place was Restaurant Epic - another place I wish never closed because their food was epic :( There were 3 of us and were told that dishes are done family style to share with the whole table. We chose the platha and curry dip for our appetizer (terrific choice). For entrees, our favorite was the lamb briyani - omg, the lamb was tender and the rice was very flavorful. Eggplant and basil dish was also tasty with the flavor of oyster sauce. We all thought the kebat dish would be more hot spicy with having chilies and cut jalapeño, pieces, but we couldn't really taste much heat. It was an interesting flavor though - with lemon squirted on the dish and spices throughout the plate. Our least favorite was the Burmese fish curry - the fish taste overpowered the dish and made the curry bland tasting. Overall, we left satisfied. A dear friend and I share a one day apart birthday and it was my turn to pick the birthday restaurant. I decided on Rangoon Burmese. I had eaten there before and enjoyed it. Frances had never been and she needsedto try the food here! I made our reservation for 11am and was asked if it was for a special occasion, and I shared about our birthdays. Nigel said he looked forward to meeting us and our celebrating there. A little something on Burma... It's one of those Asian countries, roughly the size of Texas and wedged between Bangladesh to the west and Thailand and Laos to the east. Fun facts for you...Some ninety percent of the globe's rubies come from Burma and rice is Burma's biggest exports! We arrived and Nigel greeted us outside with birthday wishes and set us at a lovely window table. After taking in the menu ordered several different dishes to give the full flavor and typical Burmese eating experience. Platha & Curry Dip Brussels Sprout with dried fish / pork belly Mango Salad Papaya Salad Kebat with Shrimp Myeik Pan Fried Noodle Biryani We also ordered two mocktails, a Gin Bramble and Mandalay Mule. Both were very good. I especially like the ginger in the mule. A slight burn in the back of my throat. Everything was absolutely delicious. I would eat there once a week if I could, I'm not even kidding). Did you know Burmese food is heavily influenced by the neighboring cultures of India, China, and Thailand? (but there is something very different in how they mix their spices). It's crazy how tasty complexity comes from straightforward cooking. Nigel was excellent and added value to our time there! Wow this was so bad. The place was pretty busy and there was obviously not enough staff, so we waited for like 45 minutes for our food. When our dishes came out, they were stone cold. The paratha was ok and the curry dipping sauce was good. However, the fish curry was terrible, lacked seasoning, tasted super fishy in a bad way, the fish was super bony and tough (completely overcooked cheap fish).
