Was visiting the Bay Area and really wanted to get Burmese food as I heard they had a large population of immigrants in this area. The restaurant was so-so. COVID-19 wise was very safe: they checked our temperature while entering the restaurant and had us wear our masks the entire time unless we were actually eating. The bummer were the cocktails ($15 per drink which is pricy): our server said that the Bartender was not working that day, so he could try to make a few drinks off the menu. We got the lychee martini and a tiki cocktail: the drinks were very watered down, with a lot of fruit concentrate and overall do not recommend getting the cocktails. Tea leaf salad - rating 3.5/5 The fermented tea leaf seasoning was good, we chose the romaine lettuce option and did not add the cabbages. In hindsight, we should have ordered a mix of the two. The salad tasted good but was dripping with olive oil which disappointed me as it impacted each bite I took of the salad. Also it was low on salt and pepper, we asked for the seasoning and this made the salad better. The nuts and garlic seasoning definitely are great ingredients in this salad. Rangoon Ruby is one of the best Burmese restaurants with its authentic Burmese, Chinese and Indian flavors and cuisines. The drinks are unique and pack a punch! I continue to come here for Burmese food each time. The parking abundant with a parking lot right in front of the restaurant. Waiters are kind and fast whenever I need extra napkins or utensils. Oh order spicy with coconut rice! The coconut rice is such a nice companion to the spicy food on the gastronomic journey down the gullet. Oh my! And the portions are quite good, easily big enough for two people and even perhaps three if one of your party are not really hungry. The wait staff are attentive and quick. My favorite combination. Rangoon Ruby is a burmese place found unexpectedly in the heart of Downtown Palo Alto. From what I've heard, Rangoon Ruby used to be pretty dang good, but I'm not sure if it lives up to the hype anymore. While the dishes were certainly very expensive, there were a lot of missteps that made me wonder how it's survived in the cutthroat downtown Palo Alto market. We ordered the tea leaf salad (of course), the basil chili chicken, the fiery beef tofu, walnut prawns (lol?), and the coconut rice. If it sets off your alarm bells when I say that the walnut prawns were the best dish we ordered, you'd be right: The tea leaf salad, while having all the necessary components of tea leaf salad, was *incredibly* oily and combined with the fermented tea leaves, the salad was pretty cloying and not refreshing as usual. I can usually polish off a whole plate of this at Kyusu in Saratoga, but this place I had to stop after a portion and a half. The basil chili chicken was also oily, overcooked (perhaps because every piece was a different size), and lacked any meaningful portion of the advertised chili flakes, jalapenos, onions, and did not have a basil garnish at all (we found a couple of oily leaves at the bottom). So it was just a mound of vaguely basil chicken that got cold extremely quickly. I get that it's Palo Alto, but with such strong flavors (if they were present) I would have been 100% happier with dark meat. The basil chili beef was... *hard* to eat. You have thin strips of beef, thin strips of bell peppers, thin green beans (again, oily), and then giant slices of tofu that didn't properly pick up the sauce it was tossed with. At $22 I honestly felt cheated. Walnut Prawns: honestly, pretty good haha. I know it's hard to mess up shrimp fried and covered in sweet mayo, but they hit the nail on the head. Order this if you must. The one saving grace of this place is their service - the staff are very attentive and the food comes out pretty fast. They'll even mix your salad, which was very extra but also very nice. If I had maybe asked what on the menu was good, I might have had a better dining experience. Finally, while it's fair that this place is expensive, as are most places in DTPA, but if you're a voracious meat eater like me, just note that almost anything on the menu with a non-egg protein is going to set you back $20+. While I don't normally dock stars for "value", considering what you get, it's a bit of a hard pill to swallow. I came here last year in December and it was great but I would have to agree with the reviews that the quality has definitely gone down. Garlic noodles with pork Would not recommend sadly. Ordered MOHINGA, TEA LEAF SALAD, and BASIL CHILI LAMB for delivery through UberEats as a weekend pandemic treat. Everything arrived fresh and delicious! I just split the mohinga portion into two bowls with the soup and microwaved for 1 minute each to heat it up some more. The portions of all the dishes were perfect for two people. We made a reservation ahead of time and ordered the tea leaf salad, fried tofu, and some pancake with curry sauce (I think it's the best appetizer out of the three). It was my first time trying Burmese cuisine and experiencing their service. The food was delectable, and I was blown away by fermented tea leaves salad. It is definitely unique dish to begin with. We do have samosa in India, but they offer samosa soup which was yum. The eggplant curry was okay and tasted very close to an Indian dish. Though I would have preferred it little more cooked, but its flavor were spot on. With humble service very close to what we get in India, or I would say Burma, this place steal my heart and I would recommend them to everybody whether you want to go out and eat casually with your friends or celebrating a special occasion. My first time at this restaurant, but I recall having their food at a yelp Elite event two years ago. My bf and I ordered the parata (like roti) with curries chicken, the Rainbow salad, and the Garlic noodles with shrimp. We didn't have reservations, but since it was 6pm on a Friday, they gave us a table, but we needed to be done by 7pm. Food was delicious and light on the portions. The salad had good flavors and combinations of textures, which was a surprise. Parata was a bit oily, though. Garlic noodles was a smaller portion, good for one, wish it was more. We went pretty early around 4:45PM so were lucky to get a seat as we did not have a reservation. Service was attentive and friendly throughout, and the interior was modern and clean with some Burmese elements adorning the walls. The menu was diverse and presentation was more upscale. Portions were moderate for the price, with prices on the higher end. As for the food, I enjoyed the nan gyi dok and tea leaf salads the most, with the other dishes tasty but I have had better. The staff is very helpful. I originally call to San Carlo's store by mistake by they pass the information to Palo Alto store. They accommodated our group lunch of 30 with flexibility of order by our own (other restaurants ask for Prix-Fixe menus). Although we sit in 2 long tables but were able to order by small group to share. The food were all goods. This is one of the few Burmese places in the Bay Area, and overall, the quality was kind of mid. I ordered the pad thai and samosas. The taste for both dishes was probably average for these dishes, but worse than comparable items at Thai or Indian restaurants in the area. I'll note that the portions were surprisingly big, I ended up splitting these two dishes and I was still very full afterwards, so keep that in mind when ordering.
