We had dinner here yesterday and were happy to find free street parking directly in front of the restaurant, as parking is complimentary after 4:00 p.m. on weekdays. We were warmly greeted and seated promptly. The restaurant has an elegant, refined atmosphere, with crisp white tablecloths adding to its classic setting. We began with a pistachio martini, which was creamy, smooth, and delicious. Our server, Caylah T., graciously went over the evening's specials with us. She was pleasant, attentive, and professional throughout the meal, making the experience all the more enjoyable. For appetizers, we chose the red and yellow beet salad with arugula from the evening's specials. It was beautifully prepared and absolutely delicious. We also shared the tempura coconut shrimp, which was wonderfully flavorful. Four perfectly prepared shrimp were served over a small accompanying salad with a delicious coconut sauce that complemented the dish beautifully. It was an outstanding appetizer and one of the highlights of our meal. For our entrées, Hubby enjoyed the organic salmon, while I chose the seafood fra diavolo. Both dishes were cooked to perfection and packed with flavor. My seafood fra diavolo was particularly satisfying, with fresh-tasting seafood and a wonderful balance of flavors. First, my server was great! Very friendly and overall very upbeat, definitely a key point to the experience however. In the beginning, as it was a plain, typical weekday evening, business was slower and it took a bit for anyone to come greet my party and I until we got seated. It was not at all a lengthy time, just enough to twiddle your thumbs and look around, waiting. For the price, the food is really mediocre and I'd say avoid eating here if you're accustomed to good food. If not! Go ahead, it's not bad, just okay, maybe overpriced albeit everything is expensive in this day and age. I could be wrong, I'm not a chef, but the vegetables tasted frozen and reheated alongside the mashed potatoes ... resembling instant in terms of its taste. (Take the potato part with a grain of salt because I'm not confident on that as a fact) Steak was definitely Choice grade ... maybe half the price. Cooked well at least. Chicken was rubbery with a rather subpar taste; it reminded me of the chicken Parmesan at Olive Garden and I didn't even get that... it has that particular 'flavor' to it. I really like chicken, I like it more than any other meat, yet I couldn't finish their sautéed dish. The table bread at the beginning reminds me of the microwaveable garlic 'rolls' you can buy at your local supermarket. It probably is frozen... Also, the food came out room temperature even if the bottom of the plate was warm/hot. Still want to mention that my server was so incredibly affable and that's really why I chose 2 stars instead of 1! Not that it makes that much of a difference... My husband's was rare. Vegetables were tasteless and cold. Finally, we witnessed the owner being crazy rude to other customers. We were trying out the restaurant for a possible location for a large anniversary party. Absolutely not there. Skip this one. There are far better dining options in the Berkshires. DISAPPOINTED- Mr.Romance and I came in expecting good food at a good price. The prices were perfectly matched for the items in the menu. Unfortunately the items on the menu were mediocre at best. Scallops wrapped in bacon, bacon was medium raw. The Lobster bisque had no seafood in it at all and the bisque was just colorful water. We have been here twice - once in a very large group and once with a few friends. The first time was very good considering the numbers. The second time was kind of a disaster. It took more than an hour and a half for our food to come out, which all told was pretty mediocre in property despite charging premium prices. Restaurant did notinng to try and make things right. The steak, vegetable in the salad, French onion soup and fried calamari are excellent, as good as food that you would expect from top restaurants in NYC. In comparison, the sushi is not at the same level that you expect from top Japanese restaurants in NYC. I think they would do better by not offering sushi at all because the level of the other dishes raises the level of expectations so high that it is hard for the sushi to meet. read more

We went to Rare 297 recently. The atmosphere and service were great. We were seated right away and then read a special list of about 20 items - was really overwhelming and we sort of spaced out. Maybe hand out a sheet with them on with the menus. We ordered cocktails - a nice selection of wine although bourbon on the rocks didn't even cover the rock. We started with apps - bacon wrapped scallops (was ok) and coconut shrimp - no coconut to be found but the fried shrimp were good. We ordered the 40 oz Tomahawk, filet Oscar, paella, and special swordfish. The steak was good and cooked as requested and the garlic mashed and veggies were good. The paella was just ok and the swordfish was way overcooked. Dessert of cheesecake (great) and carrot cake (just ok). Total bill after tax and tip for 4 was over $700. With the prices charged we were really hoping for exceptional that would make us say we can't wait to come back and try something else - definitely didn't happen. read more

We made reservations last night for a date night out. It was a nice surprise to walk in to live music and the ambience was perfect for a date. Our server, Caleb, was phenomenal, very attentive and kind. We both had filet mignon and I had mine Oscar style which was delicious. Brand new steakhouse inside the Hotel on North in Pittsfield - witnessed some minor service SNAFUs (food to wrong tables, etc) but they're brand new, so it's excusable, and I personally received fine service - based in the very positive attitudes from the staff, I'm sure these things will be fine tuned in no time. The ambiance is great - compliments the hotel nicely and has a great rustic steakhouse feel The watermelon mojito was excellent - not overly sweet, but had a nice, balanced flavor The oysters were very 'meh' - would have liked to see a mignonette, especially given the lack of a briny flavor and a more mineral heavy taste. Though at $3 each, it's a good deal if you don't need the mignonette The pasta was awesome (no surprise as I understand this was opened by the owners of RJs). started with oysters which were fresh served with the basic sauces . only one oyster option blue point my least fav .Unfortunately must agree with other reviews that this is just an overpriced basic steakhouse. My rib eye special was cooked a bit over than my requested medium rare and for $65 just was not very good beef. Supermarket whatever. And by supermarket I mean cheap. Outback and Applebees have better steak.beef slathered in a over salted mushroom goop sauce that was billed as truffle with zero of that flavor. mashed potatoes were cardboard -tasted box made. star of my plate was grilled broccolini which was delicious . rib eye had nice char and seasoning but meat was just not good. I don't know why they served the steak on the smallest plate ever so I could not escape the atrocious mushroom goop sauce I was given . The positives are that it's a swank restaurant/bar and my cocktail was tasty and strong. Perhaps appetizers and sushi are better than what I ordered .Not bad though limited wine selection. service speedy and attentive. I was staying in the hotel so if I came to Berkshires again might try more drink and apps before going someplace else for dinner . In fact, I heard many, many compliments after the dinner. The food was excellent. Santiago at the restaurant worked with me to accommodate dietary issues and budget constraints. The staff (service) was attentive, and the ambience was exceptional. We held the event in a private room. Every detail was anticipated. Santiago worked with me on table placement. First time at Rare 297 on a bike riding visit to the Berkshires with friends. The ambiance and service were impeccable. Kenneth our waiter could not have been more delightful and accommodating. The brussel sprout appetizer, a special was amazing and memorable. Our party was also very pleased with the mussels and calamari. The bread was also delicious. The filet mignon was also top notch and comparable to the finest steak restaurants in New York. I gave 4 stars only because we were disappointed with the flounder stuffed with crab meat. Three in our party had it as the waiter said it was a good choice. The flounder was soggy without taste and drowning in the lobster sauce that lacked much lobster. This was just very unimpressive compared to the rest of the dinner. Other than that , the drinks and dessert were also excellent. We will definitely return, but not for the flounder read more

My girlfriend and I are here in MA for snowboarding for our anniversary so I found from what i saw on the internet to be a nice restaurant to splurge on the occasion only to be tremendously let down by everything that was brought to the table. The $65 T-bone steak i received was an embarrassment to any steakhouse. They did not render the fat, causing the fat on the edge to be hard, white and not edible. The veggies that came with the steak were completely unseasoned and tasted like they came from a bag that was thrown in a microwave. But the real surprise of the night was the rare297 "salad". Little did we know (and the waiter did not tell us) it was not a salad even though it was listed as one. It was a caprese. This should not be listed as a $16 salad. They brought out 2 slices of mozzarella, 2 thin sliced onions, and 2 tomatoes. On the menu the "salad" stated it came with roasted peppers as well which were no where to be found. Granted we said something and they brought us out a small actual salad on the house to split. By far the biggest waste of time and $200. Do not go to this restaurant and spend your money elsewhere. We had a wonderful dining experience at Rare 297 yesterday with friends. Everything we ordered was delicious and the service and presentation of our food was over the top! I had the pistachio crusted Halibut that was delicious and perfectly cooked moist with a light cream sauce and mushrooms. My husband had pasta with vodka sauce and chicken which he enjoyed very much. They have many bugs to work out. Took 20 minutes for someone to take our drink orders, then 25 minutes to get them. Another half hour to take our food orders during which we had to ask for bread and water. We finally got our food an hour later (2.25 hours after our reservation and arrival time). Never got the appetizer and baked potatoes had been in a hot oven for hours. The steaks were good. Sat with dirty dishes in front of us for 15 minutes and finally got our checks. It's too bad because they did a great job setting up an upscale restaurant. The manager came over and asked how things were, so we told her and her response was almost nonchalant. read more
