We certainly enjoyed our evening at Rare. Parking was a breeze and the location was in a real simple location to find and the restaurant is decorated nicely. Seated nearly instantly and our server was cordial. Ordered a filet for dinner and it was cooked precisely how I ordered it. Certainly give this a 4 star for flavor and plating presentation. Ordered a hot stone appetizer of tuna and wagyu to get the meal started and this is where I got a little stuck. It looked like quartz or granite and my proteins got stuck to it, which was a bit of a miss for the price. This needs to be a hot rock, consider a change here, otherwise this app is going to suffer. We arrived for dinner at 3:00 pm (senior citizens). Most of the "options" were not available to us until after 4:00 p.m. (our mistake)! A little far from us but a really good meal! We live about 45 minutes from Star so getting to Rare Steakhouse was a bit of a drive but it was so yummy! The funny thing is, we were actually on the other end of the street for dessert and decided we needed something savory for dinner (not just ice cream). So, we wandered on over to Rare Steakhouse. The atmosphere is somehow both very laid back and Idaho-upscale. If you know, you know. The staff was incredibly friendly and we were tucked into a corner where we could watch the Boise State game on TV. No major appetizers on this trip but I did ask for my clam chowder to come out first. And ya'll...this is the best clam chowder I've had in the area. I honestly was not expecting to like it as much as I did. Highly recommend! My husband and I shared the prime rib and it was also very tasty--and a good cut, too! Easily enough for both of us with a few yummy potato sides. The only reason for knocking it down a star... The water was kind of weird. Our waitress assured us it was triple-filtered but it had an off-putting taste to me. If we're ever in the area again, I'd honestly probably bring a water bottle. If I was rating this on our lunch experience alone then it might be 3 stars for the puts and takes among ambiance, service and food (both quality and price point). But in considering how important are these longtime "mom-n-pop" type, local owner restaurants to the communities they serve, in particular one like Star that has had a big gentrification influx of people from California into this tiny, conservative territory, modest living for long timers Idaho town, I'll lean to 4 stars because these owners have had a tough row to hoe and have managed to adapt as needed. It used to be a restaurant called Rustic Table and reviews were not in great shape. The owners changed the name to Rare Steakhouse and the menu to that format but also expanded hours to be open for B as well as L and D. They did this in about Summer 2024 and now a year in, it seems they have found their audience and footing. The add of breakfast in a town like this where those options are very limited was a brilliant idea. We live only about ten minutes away from Star and we'll head back to Rare for breakfast some Tday. But this is not the kind of place for lunch or dinner that would have us return for those meals. Different strokes for different diners. VIBE: In the way of tell me your politics without telling me your politics, you'll note the plethora of American flags outside and in general the Star community is one where red hat wearing voters are the great majority. Also when we mentioned that the French fries, while super crispy had an unusual yet somehow vaguely familiar flavor for us, our hardworking and sweet server proudly said they used only beef tallow for frying and "non of those bad seed oils". OK then. (I was a nutrition major for a while and the topic is still a passion, so in that context I notice the seed oil v tallow thing is a political hot topic right now with the information on it largely wrong in some circles that also think Tylenol contributes to autism. I'll leave it at that.) The place was packed when we arrived on a weekday at the tail end of lunch hour and it seemed an all locals crowd of all stripes and in ages ranging from babies to octogenarians. I loved that about eateries like this. I posted photos of the interior, not certain I could describe it accurately, but it is what a small town might find upscale. EATS: On this sort of traditional, and comforting in the way of familiar in a rapidly changing world, menu we chose a sandwich we had not had in a long time, Club, and said we would share it. We chose fries from the "...or" option and also ordered a side of the blue cheese slaw that we had heard good things about. We are glad we ordered all of them but none of them would be do again choices, in particular the slaw and the fries. We were happy they split the meal between two plates for us in the kitchen and there was a split charge added to the bill. That fee is fine with us, it causes kitchens more to split, but it was a surprise. MENU & PRICE POINTS: BREAKFAST runs $22 for things like steak (or ham or pork chop) and eggs, to $16 - $17'ish for things like omelets or stuffed French toast to $12 for avocado toast. There was a tent card on the table that listed specials for about $9 daily. LUNCH menu features things like sandwiches (club, French dip, hot turkey, Reuben, turkey with pesto and so on) for $15-$17'ish. Also several kinds of burgers $17+ and salads from $18 - $22'ish. In general this would be a difficult place for vegetarians but there are a couple of those options. DINNER is steakhouse focus with appetizers ranging from $12 - $18'ish, mains of steak and seafood from $25 - $51'ish but with one over $100 and pastas in the $25'ish +/- range. LIBATIONS: Full bar. VIBE & SERVICE: There were two servers on duty and they were both running full speed to try to take orders, serve food and bus tables. This is the kind of place where the busing tub was brought out to the table to load dishes into it. When we arrived some tables had dirty dishes remaining on them because there was not enough help to clean them off. When things slowed down, remember this was end lunch time, the servers were diligent in getting dishes into the bus tubs and back to the kitchen. I seem to remember there was music on the sound system but at a low enough level to be able to hear the conversation of the adjacent table as well as each other. Standard height tables and chairs throughout, so hooray for accessible for everyone, as well as high top seating in the bar area. ACCESSIBILITY: ADA parking in lot. Some tables throughout seem to be useable for diners in wheelchairs. I didn't check the loo. PARKING: They have a parking lot which is a good thing! A (DELICIOUSLY) GOOD NEIGHBOR: Sea Salt Creamery is just a few doors down in this strip mall. We went on a friend of ours recommendation. We were greeted and seated right away. The host was friendly once seated our water glasses were filled by our server. And offered us our menus and drink menus. I had a Texas mule which was made perfectly. Ordered the half rack of ribs and grilled prawns. The ribs were slathered in bbq sauce and tender fall off the bone good. The 4 prawns were cooked a just the right amount of spices. I also ordered a bowl of clam chowder which was probably the best in the valley. Great service, great food I would highly recommend. read more

Rare had a full page ad in a local flyer with coupons on various items. One of the was for purchasing one entree and getting one of same or lesser value. We had never tried Rare before and thought this was a great opportunity to do so. When we got there a piece of paper had been taped to the counter stating that the ads in the paper did NOT apply to any steak items! There was no mention of this with the coupons. We pointed out that their steak offerings were "entree's" and the young man told us that even so it did not include steak entree's. We felt falsely lured to the Steakhouse with this ad only to find that at the Steakhouse no steak dishes were included in this special. How do have a steakhouse featuring buy and entree get on free and not include the main menu offerings of a steakhouse. I haven't been back to Rare Steakhouse since the name change and when they introduced breakfast, so I excitedly grabbed the opportunity to go when it became an option. I feel like I'm the only person not overly impressed with this place, so my review may be the exception, not the rule. Overall, the experience was wonderful...great ambience, service was attentive and the happy hour drink options are fantastic (the orange creamsicle is outstanding!). My issue was the food. I ordered the grilled chicken sandwich with fries. As you can see by my photo below, the chicken breast was split or two separate breasts were used in one sandwich, which made it difficult to eat. The chicken breasts were large and unfortunately overcooked. Since there were two large chunks of meat, one bite would send each one to one side or the other, making the sandwich a mess to eat. I almost felt like a cave woman trying to gnaw through the chunks whilst getting any other thing, like the cheese, lettuce, bread or avocado in the same bite. I ended up to using a knife and fork, making myself small bites with all the parts to the sandwich so I could appreciate more flavor than just overcooked chicken. If I could leave this place 10 stars I would!! My husband Drew and I just celebrated our wedding anniversary here and our night was perfect. It was nice and cool inside and I love the calm vibe inside. The food was amazing and so fresh! We started with the giant pretzel & beets. Drew had the ribeye (I had a bite, YUM) and I had the salmon. Everything was SO good. Now... the star of the show, TRAVIS!!! This young man is a reason in itself to go back. He's so kind, his service is top notch and he works really hard. A++++++++ for him! He made our night! At the end, we even got a card signed by the staff wishing us a Happy Anniversary. Very very cute place! Still looks the same as when the previous owners had it for the most part but with subtle changes. Burgers were very good! French fries and sweet potato fries are gluten free and they do offer gluten free buns! They also have 1 gluten free pasta option. The open faced turkey sandwich was amazing! The ravioli was ok, a little under seasoned for our taste, but not bad at all! We were offered drinks really quickly. This is an exceptionally great tasting dish and a visual masterpiece The ahi is perfectly seared and when combined with the wonton chips, avocado and the savory sauce drizzled over it it becomes culinary masterpiece. Okay, a party of four on a Monday at 4pm for dinner should be pretty easy as avoiding the crowds go. On that note, here is what happened. Got there, got seated, gave our order and the salads arrived fairly quickly. Without question, the worst salad that anyone of us had ever see. Warm, kinda versus cold and kinda spicy even. Two of us had a Caesars Salad and it arrived in a bowl, not tossed and dressed at the table. The waited simply disappeared and eventually we asked another employee for some more dressing as they were so dry, she promptly avoided getting them and eventually got a different employee to get us a couple of small servings of additional dressing. Salad: Zero Points. Then the main course arrived, two of us got the 12oz Ribeye, one a Filet and the other a Duroc Pig Pork Chop. The good news first. The Pork Chop was Outstanding (truly the best thing I suspect) surpassing any dinner house pork chop by a huge margin. The 12oz ribeye? Those were the Thinnest Cuts of Ribeye that I have ever seen, much less been served. It is to the cooks credit that they were able to cook anything that thin to a perfect Medium Rare, but that is the extent of it. Too fatty, a huge scoop of butter on it to somehow sweeten the deal (which just made it greasy) In the end both of us only ate half of it and declined taking the rest home in a To-Go container (I might add that is the first time in my 75 years that I can recall NOT taking home any leftovers :( and the Filet was about 3/4" inch thick (NOT 2" like you would expect) but at least properly cooked. Don't know who is cutting their meat, but they need to go back to school for that. I am guessing that all of their food is consistently cut super thin, as their cook is evidently used to not overcooking what they have to work with. As sides went, their baked potatoes were excellent. Idaho Number One Bakers, fully loaded. Need to leave some additional butter and sour cream for them when they are served, as there is no way that the initial dressing is sufficient, but perfectly cooked, nice and hot and the right size for 'Steak House' The veggies were overdone, IF I ever went back, I would only order the Pork Chop and even then, I would ask to see the actual portion that they are going to cook, to avoid a sandwich sized portion landing on the table in front of me and a hard pass on the salad. Drinks? Nothing special, but hard to screw up three waters and one order of alcohol. I truly wish I had something Positive to say. The pictures of their various dishes on the Internet LOOK Good and they seem to have good reviews, but for our first time there AND taking relatives from out of town that were visiting, for the money we shoulda' gone to Chandlers or Barbacoa in Boise. As an aside, I knew when I sat on the threadbare, worn out chairs that this wasn't going to go well. For the prices they are charging, get some chairs with comfortable seats and backs, cut your steaks to a decent thickness and learn how to make a proper salad. If you are successful now (which it appears you are) just think how much more successful you will be when people are both comfortable, happy and full of good grub! Caveat Emptor! read more

Eh I'm torn on Rare. Food = 100 stars. Sooo delicious. Pricy but food is worth it. However...the service. Id give 1 star. It was a busy Saturday, but we had 3 different people talk to us and only each person once. I couldn't even tell you who our waiter or or waitress was. Our water was empty halfway through dinner and wasn't asked if we wanted more until after we paid. We were sitting right by the front door so you would think we'd been seen. It was very disappointing considering we were there for a special occasion treating another couple out, so we spent good money, but tipping 20% on that large bill when we got pretty much no service? We really enjoy this restaurant and appreciate having such a great place in our town. The people who work there are so great. Extremely nice and they work hard. The food is great! Everything we have ordered thus far is tasty and well prepared. With that said I wanted to offer a bit of constructive feedback: First, our meals have arrived before our drinks every time, which made the experience feel a bit rushed. Normally when we dine out, our drinks arrive and then we are asked what we would like to order for our meal. Second, the smoke coming from the hot rock steaks was overwhelming. Strong enough that when we walked in we considered leaving. Improving the ventilation or fan system would make a big difference in the comfort for guests.
