We had brunch at the Rascals in Greensboro NC on Sunday Oct 20. Even though it wasn't a week night, everyone was having as much fun as if it were! We were served by several staff members at the bar, as these were the only seats available at 11:30 am, but we still had everything we needed when we needed it. My friend, her first time there in many years, had the chicken tenders. 5 large beautiful tenders however she only ate a couple and did not take the rest home. Great Surprise. Was in town for an appointment checked my trusty Yelp App and found Rascal's. Pretty low key on the outside. Three dismal tables on the cement looking at the empty parking lot Inside we were warmly greeted by Jacob, and seated immediately. The dining room was empty. ( It was a Thursday, before noon! ). Menu looked mediocre. Jacob promptly brought water...with lemon as requested. He had us turn the menu over to the lunch section and life began to improve. Then told us the soup of the day was Creamy Rueben. Every lunch special sounded better than the one before...and all around $10! For the smaller appetite. Who shouldn't have a smaller appetite!? I chose the Ragin' Cajan', my partner got the Stir Fry with Chicken. I got a cup of soup. Fantastic, fantastic, fantastic! The soup was amazing. Rich, smooth and flavorful. The Ragin' was FULL of haliopino peppers and they were warm, flavorful and not crazy spicy. And quality, firm shrim The stir fry was full of chicken. Serving size? Plenty. More customers did arrive. But it is off the beaten path and it is truly one of my favorite spots in the south metro. Awesome. New to the area for a visit, invited another couple to join us for dinner. We couldn't have picked a better place. Super menu, great service, great food and good prices. We ordered appetizers: cheese curds and potato skins that had accompanying dips. I am picky about cheese curds and these were very good. The potato skins were awesome. Dinner was a fancy Mac and cheese that was so rich I had to bring home some for lunch. Other choices for the table where a Reuben that looked great and so did the waffle fries. I read online that Rascals served haddock for their fish fry. That is my favorite being from the east. Placed my order over the phone and the gal was very friendly. Called back to make an addition and the guy too was very helpful. They said 10-20 minutes. Boy is that fast for a Friday. Picked up was easy and fast. Took the four meals home and they were a hit! My experience here was just average, not enough to keep me from coming back but not enough to make this a go-to place on a Friday night for dinner. The food left a little to be desired. I ordered the cajun chicken tortellini which is something I was really excited for. While the tortellini tasted delicious, there was hardly any cajun that could be tasted, and the chicken was not quite cooked. A disappointing meal nonetheless, however the bright spot of our visit was our server. He was dealing with quite the rush for whatever reason and never made us feel like we were rushed, or not a priority even though it was clear he was dealing with a ton of people. If there is one thing that Rascals does right, it is being dependable and traditional. Walking into this place for the first time brings back memories of growing up in small town Minnesota. Very similar to a nice supper club up in the Brainerd Lake's areas, Rascals has a large dining area as well as a good size bar area. The menu is a collection of American classics and supper club choices. We decided to get sandwiches. Our table ordered the Gyro, Blue Cheese Bacon Burger, and the Walleye Sandwich. We also tried some Onion Rings and Sweet Potatoes Fries. The food was good, nothing unique or downright amazing but A-OK. In terms of my Blue Cheese Dressing Test, I would give them a 3* I do have to give a shout out to the staff. All younger but hard working. Kudos to the hiring manager since some young employees can have short attention spans. =) *For those of you who don't know, I have a special test for restaurants called "Blue Cheese Dressing Test". Basically, the better the dressing, the better the restaurant. I have passed by Rascal's many times and finally stopped in for a late lunch. You wouldn't think so from the outside, but Rascal's definitely has a dive bar feel to it. Their lunch menu is jam-packed full of amazing deals! Their food is an absolute bargain. You can find anything from soups to wraps to pasta, etc. They also have the "Bar Baskets" menu available if you sit at the bar or a table top which is self-seating. I decided to order a cup of their Wild Rice Soup (w/ ham and available every day) and the Juicy Lucy/Krinkle Fries bar basket ($6.75). My boyfriend ordered the Buffalo Chicken Wrap with Waffle Fries ($9.95). The reason why I am giving them 4 stars instead of 5 is for two reasons: 1) The service was excruciatingly slow. Our waitress was fine however, she was the only one that was serving people, both bartending and waitressing. She continuously went back and forth between making drinks at the bar and taking orders/bringing food out to people, so it took a long time for us to get our food as well as get our tab. They need to hire more staff, so the work isn't all on one person's shoulders and customers end up having to wait. 2) The Juicy Lucy was TINY. It was more of a Juicy Lucy bite and not so much a burger. The meat tasted wonderful, but it was gone in two bites. I wouldn't recommend getting this bar basket due to the small size. Aside from that, the food we ordered tasted great. I wish I could have had a bigger portion size, but the buffalo chicken wrap was great, the fries (both waffle and crinkle) were delicious, and the soup was my favorite. I plan to come back to try more of their menu and have a few drinks. Rascal's has some of the best deals you can find in the Apple Valley area and it's the perfect place to watch a football game. After an extremely difficult day, with the loss of a dear friend and juggling of a lot of different balls at work, our intent tonight was to get out and enjoy some good food and good atmosphere, with some old friends/servers at one of our favorite spots. While the food that was eventually served tonight was delicious, the original expediter, Jack, was extremely rude and basically ruined the entire evening. When informed of this by his supervising manager, Sean, Jack refused to apologize and made even more derogatory remarks to us, the customers. We don't ask much. We're generous with our tips. We expect good service for our money and we've always received that in the many years we've patronized Rascals, over the many changes in ownership. We've come to love many of the staff there and consider them darned near close to family. When we arrived tonight, we hugged Sean, Savannah, and Angelique. Phil, you greeted me by name and welcomed me back. We'll certainly miss the regular interactions with them and with you. Bottom line, however, is that we are your customers. You understand that, Phil. I know you do. Your entire restaurant is a team. Perhaps Jack does not understand that. Maybe he doesn't get that everyone has to make the right impression. Maybe it's his age. Then train him. Make him accountable for his actions. But also make Sean accountable for Jack's actions because Sean seemed quite put out by our request for an apology. And he made an offhand remark about me as well. Totally inappropriate. Sean has been in this industry long enough to know better. I do want to thank you, Phil, for our meals. It was, quite frankly, the least you could do. I would normally recommend this place bust since coming for the fish fry that was an awful decision. It was despicable how they served the fish. They praised it as being so great when in all reality it was not. I wouldn't come back here and spend my money on something they didn't even supply or try to short people out on. I've been here numerous times over the years but today I came in on a whim with a girlfriend for the Easter brunch. We didn't have reservations and I called ahead and she said we could just come in and try to find a seat at the bar, which we did, and got a seat right away! They have AWESOME Sunday deluxe bloodies, but today they did not. I was so disappointed, but the bartender said it was because of the holiday and it would take to long to make them if everyone ordered one, so I got the regular one, and it was fine, nothing special. The brunch was decent- scrambled eggs, prime rib, ham, cheesy hash browns, biscuits and gravy, fruit, shrimp, salmon, the usual stuff. I wished they had eggs benedict, because I am a fiend for those. They also had a table of cookies, mini cheesecakes, and DONUTS and muffins from Denny's bakery in Bloomington (YUM!) the regular donuts were nothing special, but the banana ones were fantastic. Overall a decent brunch buffet, although they only do it on Easter and Mother's Day. I've been here for breakfast a bunch of times, and it's solid, especially the cinnamon rolls! We have been here a couple times in the past and always had really good service and good food. Tonight we tried a couple of different things including the mushroom and Swiss burger. The food came out fast and was really good. If you're looking for a great place in Apple Valley that's kind of off the beaten path please stop in and try this place the food is good and the atmosphere is fun and the staff is great. They have pulltabs a large bar area many dartboards and a video game area for the kids. My french dip was okay, though the meat seemed a little dry. And the mashed potatoes were not very good at all, with what seemed like canned dark brown gravy over them. I can't recall what sandwich my wife had, but the sweet potato fries that came with them were equally boring. Alyssa R, our 6 month old daughter, and I came here for the first time to try the All-You-Can-Eat Friday Night Fish Fry. We called ahead & were informed they start serving it at 5 pm. We got there just before 6 and were able to get a table right away, with no waiting. The parking lot is shared with several other businesses. We found it to be a little tough to find a spot because of this. Nancy, our server, greeted us before we even had our jackets off. She asked us if we knew what we wanted to drink. Without being here before, we asked her what they had. She informed us they had a Happy Hour going till 6:30, so we could partake in cheaper drinks. We did. Alyssa R went with a Gin & Tonic. I did a Fat Tire. The place is set up as a Bar & Restaurant. The Bar area is separate from the Restaurant. Divided by glass windows. So, in the Restaurant, you can see all the fun everyone is having in the Bar, but not have to hear it. Nancy came back with our drinks and told us about the dinner specials they had. We both went with the AYCE Fish Fry. No choices with the Fish Fry. It comes standard with Beer Battered Haddock, French Fries, and Coleslaw. She gathered up the menus, and scampered away to put in our order. About two minutes after she left, Alyssa R & I got on a conversation about Clam Chowder. We decide we wanted to try some. We wave Nancy over, and ask her for a bowl to share. This comes in a minute. It looks & tastes spectacular. A top 5 Clam Chowder of all time for us. Very homemade. Clams in every bite. It is a must try. I thought about licking the bowl clean. Maybe if my daughter wasn't looking. When the Fish Fry's get dropped off, I gotta say, I was disappointed in how it looked. The plate had O'rida style crinkle cut French Fries and 1 inch x 2 inch cubes of breaded fish. We got a side plate of two small bowls of very creamy & white coleslaw. No color. It also came with a wedge of lemon and a ramekin of tartar sauce. As far as taste? The fries tasted just as they looked. O'rida-ee. The coleslaw was off. I swear it tasted fishy. I asked Alyssa R what she thought, and she thought the same thing. She said she thought the cook put the essence of fish fry into the slaw. It wasn't good at all. The Fish? Great. The Beer Batter was spot on. Crunchy, yet light. Perfectly done, flaky, white Haddock inside its golden shell. I wish they would keep the fillets intact for the eye appeal it brings, but the flavor wasn't compromised by cutting them up into cubes. The tartar wasn't anything special, and seemed store bought. It was sufficient, though. Nancy was on top of her game, and checked in with us often. We got a 3 piece reorder between us. They came in about three minutes. It didn't come with tartar or lemon. We needed to ask for these. I asked if the fries or coleslaw was also included with the All-You-Can-Eat. Not that I wanted anymore of either. It was not. Just the Fish was. Boo. When our check was dropped off, it totaled just over $42 after tax. $13.95 for the AYCE Friday Night Fish Fry. This price point is too high for what you get. If they are going to charge that much, they should be including everything as AYCE. OR....They could give you options with the Fish Fry. Like a choice of potato and side. Also, maybe another style of fish. Like Baked. But nope. They don't. That's going to be a factor going forward for us in choosing if we want to go here again for another Friday Fish Fry.
