I had a positive experience with Luis back in 2020 where he fixed a bad skim job by another…read morecontractor for me with a bunch of patches, and I thought Luis' skills were pretty superior. Over the years I have been doing DIY fixing of more bad spots around the house but I also work so I was never going to get around to all of it. I decided to call Luis back recently because I didn't want to do it myself anymore and I want to repaint fresh non-patchy walls. I hired Luis to reskim two bedrooms and two accent walls and some other miscellaneous spots that I added after he started working at my house. Luis was at my house for 3 half-days (1.5 in total) before telling me he was finished with the walls. I was (still) happy as a clam at that point and paid him in full for what was completed, fully trusting that the work was done skillfully based on my prior experience. (He was coming back one more time to finish the misc. stuff that I added on and I would pay for that part then.) Anyway, imagine my horror when I checked on his "finished" work and saw imperfections everywhere and tons of sanding dust still left behind on the walls, switches, and even mud on the door knobs. I'll let the pictures speak for themselves from here with brief descriptions of what's being shown. -Pictures 1-3: Some of the imperfections from the first time Luis said he was "finished." -Picture 4: His first fix-it visit(half day). He was supposed to find all the imperfections and patch them (the yellow highlighter spots), except he was patching bubbles with more bubbles. I had to patch all the spots again with my own compound and added a ton of other ones that he missed. Took me two full nights. -Pictures 5&6: His second fix-it and final visit (another half day). He was supposed to sand over all the patches and walls to leave them with a smooth & uniform finish that's ready for primer & paint. This was how I found them after he left. I sent him these pictures and told him to not come back as I had given him 2 chances to fix and he failed both times. There was no response from him. -Picture 7: I made only a partial payment of the balance on Luis' last visit because part of the remaining work was him making the corners of a ceiling overhang crisp, the corners are crisp but somehow the overhang is now squiggly when that wasn't the problem before. -Picture 8: I had taped up all my trims before Luis came as I didn't want any mud/compound to get on them, but I thought my crown molding were safe. They were not. He had busted them pretty badly with his electric sander in 7 spots and dinged them in at least 10 other spots but those were minor and I was able to superglue them back together. I did take on the repair of the major dings myself because I wanted to tape all of it up before he came back for more sanding. Luis and I had good rapport and I actually liked talking to him, but once the job took a turn for the worse, he never acknowledged that he didn't do a good enough job. He instead said things like, 1. "You're not supposed to look at the walls with a light from the side like that" and "I've never seen anyone look at a wall like you." --Yes, technically he's right, walls usually have paint on them which would have made these imperfections painfully obvious even when looking at them straight on, but until there is paint, this is how drywallers check for imperfections and fix them before they get permanently sealed with paint. (I had two painters (who also skim coat) come over for quotes and this was how they both checked to see how much prep work they would have to do before painting). 2. "I could fix these walls 10 times and something will still come up."--it really shouldn't if he did it right the first time, he's supposed to be a professional, not a DIYer like me. 3. "You've got to be kidding me. I'm at a point where I want to just refund your money and get out of this insanity"--after he came and saw all the patches I added to the walls (that he missed). I know what he was trying to imply and still gave him my electric sander to use so he could finish the job. With all that said, guess who is still stuck sanding the walls now after paying Luis to do the job and saying I didn't want to DIY this anymore. And with all these patches that I had to add to cover up his mudding imperfections/bubbles, it's looking like I'm going to end up with patchy walls again, which is exactly where I was when I handed Luis this project. What a joke. And the crown molding that I fixed up? That still needs to be repainted as well. I wasn't going to leave this review, but after several weeks and my walls still needing to be finished, I thought I would share my experience.

Writing this now because I just saw an outlet underneath the sink that's not at all mounted to the wall and was reminded of how ridiculous this whole ordeal was. They'd come maybe 2 times a week, maybe less, sit in the driveway and wait for each other for a while, and they'd always forget what they were supposed to do. Then they'd say "ah ya we remember now, gotta go to Home Depot" and take another 1-2 hours. The pace of work was incredibly slow. When they were redoing our kitchen, we came home and saw that the main handyman had bought cabinets for the sink that opened straight into the fridge and stove, so you could barely open them. It was on a corner, so clearly a corner / lazy Susan cabinet was needed. Delayed the job by however many days. They cracked the sink they put in, and there's carvings in the countertops from where they messed up with sloppy cutting. When they installed the AC window units, they stained the window panes, sink, and the outside of the house with the insulation foam and didn't attempt to clean it until I asked. They didn't get much up; still stained. They didn't put calking around the countertop they put in behind the sink. There were a bunch of other times where similar things happened that I had to ask them to redo it or do a part of the job they'd missed.

Called Rick late on a Friday for a quote on badly needed repair on two walls of lath and plaster in our kitchen. He returned my call the next day and an appointment to review the damage came later on that same Saturday. After review of the wall damage in the kitchen and some dry wall damage in the garage the quote for the job was quite reasonable. Rick also set up a work date two days later on Tuesday at 7:30am. Sure enough, Rick his 23 year old son, Ryan and a helper were at my back door on the dot at 7:30am. The work began immediately and expertly with complete protection laid out on the hardwood floors and adjacent walls. The demolition and underlying wire were done and a brown coat was prepared and applied. Soon after drying the final coat of plaster was applied most professionally and smoothly by the crew. While this early work was attended to by Ryan and their helper, Rick quickly and expertly repaired the dry wall damage in the garage before joining the rest of the crew in the kitchen. Without a break, the walls were repaired and a full-fledged clean up was performed leaving the floors spotless by late afternoon. I could not have been more satisfied with the entire undertaking. All this and the entire crew could not have been more affable and easier to deal with. My wife and I have owned this home in Mar Vista for 46 years and have had many jobs around the house done by various contractors, Rick and Ryan of RCS Plastering are at the top of my list! Recently, I had some electrical work done in our master bedroom. The light switch had to be moved to accomodate a new and larger switch, which left quite a large hole in the bedroom wall. Rick patched up the hole and painted the wall so nicely that there was no sign of the hole; even the electrician said it was a super job. Afterwards, I asked Rick to do some more painting in other areas in our home. That job was also super. Rick was very careful and neat in his work. Wow !! We have a 90 year old house that is all plaster and RCS completely re-furbished 2 rooms and ceilings that were falling apart and made them look like they did the day they were built 90 years ago. They were on schedule, on budget, and were totally professional in preparation and cleanup. We had coved ceilings and textured finishes and they made them look perfect again. I contacted Rick Suggs on Saturday for an estimate. He came out Sunday afternoon and quoted a reasonable price for plaster and stucco work after plumbing repairs. He did a very professional job on the first part of the work on Wednesday of that week and followed up with difficult ceiling repair the next Monday, after further plumbing work was done. He was always friendly, yet extremely professional. He was timely and always checked in before arrival by telephone. Called RCS for an estimate to repair damage from a prior roof leak a week ago. The owner came out to assess the job. He said he would email the estimate and his availability to do the job, as he was booked for the next three weeks. He never sent the estimate. Recognizing that sometimes email fails, I called and left a detailed message providing my email again and still nothing. I Think it is very unprofessional to not provide the estimate or at the very least, give me an update if for some reason beyond their control it's delayed. read more

We also needed someone to paint the entire house, including the eaves, wood windows, trim, and exterior doors. As the project progressed, we also added on removing a window, re-siding the back of our house (a long wall without stucco), installing a new back door, and replacing our old garage door with a brand new one. Ailyn came by to take the initial inspection of work and was very friendly. She took measurements and was able to speedily prepare an estimate for the work. They were willing to work with my schedule even though they are fairly busy. They communicated very well throughout the whole process and kept me up to date even days leading to the job date. Ailyn and the framer were prompt and on time. They go to work and delivered exactly what they said they would. Franklin made a stop by to also check on the progress. Day of, I even had a 3rd area of concern and they were willing to also complete this as well with no prior heads up. They go out of their way to accommodate and execute. They even helped with replicating the decorative facia around the post to match what was originally there. They were very reasonable and fair with their pricing. Two wouldn't take the job because it was too small. Franklin came by and gave me the best price. After the initial deposit, his crew came by about a week later and finished the job in one day. I think they did a pretty good job replicating what had existed before, although the work seemed a little sloppy. I saw a few gaps in the framing, but they were able to seal it up with bondo. Also on one of the posts there was a large crack in the wood, but that was sealed as well. For the price, I think this was a pretty good value. Would definitely recommend for smaller jobs like mine.
