Don't come here expecting a beautifully well maintained park, you won't find it. What you have is a huge dirt lot with various obstacles (trees with holes in them, a steep little bridge, some other fallen trees) and plenty of benches for humans to sit on. Our dog seems to love it. She loves socializing (and jumping on people - if we've been there at the same time I have no doubt that Lima has jumped on you before). She just tears back and forth across the park, making sure all the other dogs are around to follow. For what it is, it's great. It's pretty funny reading all the other reviews, people complaining about mean dogs. Sure, sometimes there are dogs there that might be a little too aggressive for our dog, but when that happens we just make sure to either keep them separated or leave and come back later. You can't really blame that on the park, can you? read more

HAVEN FOR PARASITES- Beware I loved this park. Took my pup there almost every day when I first got him. He had been de-wormed and was clear when I got him. After taking him there almost daily for about 3 months...he started getting diarrhea and I took him to the vet and discovered he had not one, but THREE different parasites living in his poor little tummy :( Cost me about $400 to treat. I'm pretty sure they came from this dog park because it is all sand and dirt, no grass, and I was taking him there every day. I will say this- before the trauma happened, I absolutely loved it there! If you have an adult dog that doesn't lick dirt, by all means, there are tons of fun dogs and friendly people here, and it is big. But if your dog is young or a bit sensitive, monitor him closely here and don't let him or her drink the water! read more

My terrier Tyson loves this place!. I bring him at least once a week (right before I bathe him, of course). Large separate areas for large and small dogs. Plenty of room to run around and tire out. Great place to hang out and relax with you dog(s). I would recommend to all the newbies to not be nervous when bringing your pet for the first time, your dog will get used to it before you do. Ok so my husband is making me not write about the comparision of this dog park to the one in HB and how the people are WAY friendlier in HB, but this park does deserve 4 stars. This park seems to be well maintained, big enough for big dogs to run, fun obstacles to play with, and the water bowl was very clean. Overall this place seems to be well maintained and the dogs were very nice. We have a medium "solid" dog and a little wuss so to be fair we didn't spend all our time in the little dog area. We carried around our wussy dog "Banshee" while our other dog "Go-Go" played. Both our dogs seemed to have a good time. The dogs were all very friendly, and I saw no fights, while the owners all seemed attentive of their dogs (which was pretty great since at other dog establishments I've seen people engrossed in conversation, ignoring the fact that they're at a dog park with their DOG). I really liked the park surrounding the dog park too. It was very grassy and clean. Our dogs really had fun. Oh and btw the parking wasn't bad at all. There were lots of spots along the driveway. We missed it driving by the first time as there are no signs from 7th street but just watch on your left (if going towards the 22) for a driveway and gated in area or for guys casting fishing poles (casting practice area I guess.. my dogs wanted to swim in it). read more

I enjoy this dog park. I started going here ever since Cal State University of Long Beach started it's semester. Since it's only a few minutes away from CSULB I decided to give it a try and Ranger loves it. He gets along so well with the other dogs even though he's the shortest thing there. Ranger is big at heart and that's where it counts. I also love how well kept it is and clean the park is. Who likes stepping into dog poop any ways. I don't have to worry about that here. They're many dog walkers that come here so they bring tons and tons of dogs. I enjoy that because it gives Ranger tons and tons of friends to play with. read more

I really like this dog park. Sure grass would be nice but the dirt is fine. When we first got our puppy, a few people told us to beware of this park. I wanted to form my own opinion on this park and so far it is great! Our dog Coconut has a great time and poops herself out! :)There are many balls for the dogs to play with so you don't have to bring your own. We have met many friendly DOGS and people here. We typically go during the week around 4pm or Saturday mornings around 7am. You can have a bad experience at any park you go to, all depends on when you go and who is there. If there is a not so friendly dog, I just try to stay away which is easy to do since the large dog side is so big. A great place in Long Beach for your dog to play and socialize! read more

So not the most pretty of dog parks, but it serves its purpose. It is free to park vs. the one at El Dorado. Occasionally parking means parking on the grass near the Casting (Fly) Club. Since my dog is considered "small" we spend most of our time in the "small dog" side. When I deem it safe enough, we make our way to the bigger side for more space. If the bigger dogs get aggressive or gang up on my little guy, we make a beeline back to the smaller side. I suggest wearing your work/gardening/dirty shoes, and preferably closed-toe. As someone who frequents this park on a (nearly) weekly basis, I would recommend that everyone take a few minutes and walk the perimeter and clean up park - there are plenty of scoopers provided, so use them. Pick up poop, trash, and cigarette butts. read more

My dogs tends to enjoy an actual grass dog park but I understand that it's to hard to maintain at this location. My dogs enjoy it and I enjoy it but yes there are better parks out there...... just not closer ones. As for peoples reviews of the owners at this park.... that has nothing to do with the park itself... every park has pet owners that don't do their job as an owner. The bigger issue I have is with the dog walkers that are paid to give attention to paying customers dogs..... instead they go to the park and the dogs just sit with little interaction.... but I digress... again this is not the park itself. read more

The park is over 2 acres in size, and uses decomposed granite (which drains very easily during rain storms where I can still run my dog even in the midst of one, and is easier to clean up after your dog since you're not smudging into grass or wood chips like what you'll find in many dog parks) which is remarkably easy on the joints for both humans and dogs alike. There are 3 water stations for the dogs (two in the large dog area, plus one in the small dog section) so you don't need to bring your own supply unless you really want to. There is also an isolation area for "problem" dogs as well. As it is a "Dog" park, there are plenty of shaded areas and benches for us humans to stand/sit under, yet there are plenty of obstacles and other things to occupy our charges. As primarily a night time user (and part of the after-hours "vampire" group, though I've been at the facility at all hours), the park is well lit. Even after-hours, the ambient light from the regular park lights do a reasonable job of covering the majority of the area (though it is recommended that you carry a flashlight to help in locating and cleaning up after your companion). Also, if you're worried about dog-walkers (for which many of them are pretty good about handling their clients): they are only found during the daylight hours. During the evening, you have individual owners and their bundles of energy running about. Like with any other park, there will be incidents. Yet, for my own witnessing over the past year of being a regular visitor, most owners are on top of matters. Compared to other parks (and I won't name them), Rec Dog Park is my primary and constant go-to regardless of time of day or night. Other parks might be more "owner" friendly, yet this one leans towards being "pet" friendly...as it should since it's a dog's park. Finally, in defense of the "vampire" group, for which I am a proud member: we've been bashed in this forum by a few people. Honestly, until you've really been there and met the gang (composed primarily by a retired CSULB professor, an adult ESL teacher, CalFire Captain, UPS tech, accountant, a former newspaper editor, a Ralph's employee and her small pack, a family and their pack of dogs, and other regular people living regular lives...no gang-bangers in the lot of us), please hold your opinions to specific individuals and not the group as a whole. Great size and very clean. The big dog park is HUGE and spacious. The little dog park is quiet small and I wish it were bigger, but it's still pretty clean. The dirt, sand is nice since it doesn't get muddy like the Silverlake dog park. There's not tons of shady in the little dog park so in hot weather I try to go before the sun comes out. read more

Amazing dog park! I brought my dog for the first time Last week, and have brought him every other day since. The first time I came I parked on the street and walked over. But there is a private parking right next to the dog section. There is a smaller section, I guess for small dogs. It's normally pretty empty because everyone uses the big open area. It is about the size of a football field so plenty of space for pups to run in. They have a few ramps and obstacles for dog training. Plenty of seats for us humans to be lazy on. They also have two water fountains with bowls for puppy hydration. Everyone I have ever encountered at this place is friendly with well behaved dogs. Have never seen anyone leave dog waste behind. Have no complaints about this place and will continue to bring my pup. Best dog park in the area!!!!! read more

So the first time I took Bella(she was 5 months at the time) here was a disaster. I took her on a gloomy Monday afternoon and there were barely any dogs. Two male dogs were trying to dominate here and I just did not like it at all. Me and my boyfriend left as soon as the male dogs were harming Bella. We had to try it out again since it is the closest dog park from where I lived. We actually went on a Saturday afternoon and it was like dog heaven! There were all kinds of dogs and they were all getting along fine. My puppy which was 6 months at the time was having so much fun! All of the dogs were friendly to her and now that she has grown up a little bit she does not let the male dogs dominate her, she stands her ground. For some reason it is a miracle every time I go there with her because all of a sudden she knows how to fetch or she knows how to go through the obstacles and climb trees, it is pretty weird if you ask me. After that day we have gone to this dog park 3 times and they were all a good experience. I would recommend bringing your dog, big or small, here on Fridays and Saturdays. I do not recommend going on weekdays because nobody is barely over there. I also do not recommend an annoying puppy running around barking at everything coming here because the owners will get annoyed. (And I am not talking about mines!) read more

Sorry! It was my first time ever going to a dog park with my puppy, and it was enough to know that I will probably never return to this particular one. Its just a fenced area of dirt where the dogs can run around. Its not the cleanest place to go to if you're bringing a house dog with you. Be extremely careful when driving up to this place, especially at night -- there's hardly any signage anywhere that designates one where to go. And it can definitely cause a collision if you're not being careful when turning into the park. I went during the evening, so there were a fair amount of people there who took their dogs after work. The people I encountered weren't very social. It looked like everyone picked up after their dog. Other than that, that was pretty much it. Nothing too exciting. If you live in LB you know we lack green open space for dogs to burn some energy. Because of that, Im grateful for the Dog Park.. I didnt give it more than 3 starts, because quite honestly its sub-par. Its a dusty dirt pit, and not well maintained. Dog walkers are always there with a pack that they simply can't control, which leads to bad dog behavior. There should be a 2-3 dog limit per person. I have seen dogs, and people attacked as these walkers have no control over their pups. Its unfortunate and shadows the experience. Like most dog parks you have an abundance of bad owners who can't control their pups, but thats everywhere. All in all, I do out of necessity. I will continue to go, and do in fact appreciate the park. But like a lot of things, I see room for improvement. read more

Good place to take your dog to run around. The area is very huge, with plenty of space for dogs to roam. There are also lots of benches under shady trees to sit under. There is no grass at all only dirt, many trash cans and baggies to clean up after your dog. The place was a little hard to find for me since I'm not from the area but there is a sign outside so watch out for it. Plenty of parking. read more

Oh, what a nice surprise. I'm typically very much not a fan of fenced dog parks but this one has so many entrance gates that it eliminates a lot of the territoriality that comes with multiple dogs using the same entrance. It also has owners that pay attention to their dogs! What a novel concept, right? The park has water stations, shade, benches, plenty-o-trash cans, and a lot of really fun obstacles for the canines to enjoy. Agility equipment, a giant fallen tree, mounds to dig in, it's really good times. it's also big enough so that if there is a problem dog, you can simply head to the other end of the park. Easy as that. It's a dirt park, but it's not as dusty or filthy as you'd expect. That was also a nice surprise. Clean dirt, go figure. This is a nice park with nice owners and nice dogs. it's still not San Diego, but it's a lot better than the Redondo park! read more

WOW...super nice dogs and owners...it was our first time to the park yesterday and boy did we get a warm welcome...everyone was super nice inside the park...and so were the dogs...what I love most about this park is that there's a separate section for small dogs...Presley felt right at home...they were a bunch of dogs in the small dog section when we got there...then it slowly dwindled down...and then there was consistently maybe 5-8 at any one time... The only complaint I had was that I wish there was grass in the small dog section...and that they had poopy bags there...I could tell that some owners weren't as conscientious as others when it came to picking up their dogs poop...I'm a stickler for this...so please pick up after your dogs! read more

This place is good. Two water fountains and a large area for dogs to run in. The people are nice here and for for the most part the dogs too. One thing I don't like is the dirt and how you have to wear good shoes for this. If you want you and your dog to stay clean, then just double think it because of they're having fun, chances are they are coming back dusty or muddy. The parking is not the greatest but I've never been able to not park. The park is a little older but my puppy doesn't see all that, it's a large enough space for her to bolt and have other dogs chase her. So if she's happy then so am I. Just like any time you take ANY dog to a communal area, try and make sure their shots are up to date and have flea medicine so your pup doesn't come back with anything you don't want to pay for at the vet. I've been to quite a few dog parks in Orange County and LA and this one tops them all so far. The best part is NO grass and NO wood chips... just dirt. My biggest dog park gripe is owners not paying attention to their dogs when they take a crap and thus not picking up after them. Dirt makes it much easier to see and avoid their poops! The big dog area is quite large and there are various obstacles (bridge, tunnel, tree trunks, etc) to play on. There are also some large trees so the humans can watch and stay out of the sun. The small dog park is much smaller (duh) and is suitable for the smaller dog breads to run around and sniff butts. There is also a large tree for shade. Sometimes the parking lot is full so you might have to park on the grass. Thanks Long Beach! read more

Yeah as others have stated it would be nice but there's only so much city can do It would be nice to have more in the area We as owners need to clean up after our dogs. Park is well maintained for the amount of dogs that frequent. It would be nice if they would ad some plants or grass area but I'm guessing that would be expensive I usually keep my small dogs in the small dog area as I've heard some of the big dogs can be aggressive. The small dog park is SO SMALL. My dog did not enjoy this park because their is limited space for her to play. It's all dirt very dusty we were sneezing the whole time. Now the big dog park is Massive with lots of obstacles, tennis balls the whole 9 yards I'm sure if you have a big dog your dog will love it. It's just not the park for us we will stick to our regular El Dorado dog park or Home Run dog park. read more

First time going to a dog park that's open until late at night. Dog parks usually close when it gets dark, but not this one because there are light posts throughout the dog park; on the large side at least. That's actually the reason why it only has 4 stars, the difference is like daytime at the large side & nighttime at the small side. The small dog side doesn't have any light posts inside of it. The little light it has, comes from the lights of the large side, and a lot of it is being blocked by trees. Trimming the tree might allow more light to come in. A lot of dog parks are just fenced in grass or dirt, and this is a much better park because it has stairs, tree trunks, tunnels & etc. to keep your dogs entertained. This is a nice, large park with lots of room for my two labs to run around... there are a lot of tennis balls to kick around, a large tree trunk my year and a half old pup loves to climb on... the grounds are kept nicely and generally, the owners are good at cleaning after their dogs. I haven't been there much when there are dog walkers there with the big heards and I see the complaints posted on those. I'm generally there with the "work" crowd... later afternoon and weekends... Most owners keep a good eye on their pets. I feel it is personal responsibility if an owner senses an aggressive dog to move their dog to another area of the park. I cant control other dogs but when I sense that one is getting aggressive, I take my dogs to another part of the park. It's big enough to do that and my dogs obey me when I herd them somewhere else. My one complaint is when there are small dogs, which I have no problem with, on the big dog side who tease the larger dogs into playing and then owners get upset when the big dogs start to play with them. If a small dog owner doesn't like big dogs playing with them, they should keep them in the small park area. That being said, there are wonderful small dog owners whose dogs are fun, lively and engage well with the bigger dogs. It's a great park, clean, lighted until late and it makes my life SOOO much easier to have an area where my pups can run and run... read more

First time i went, even after i was warned about this park, i parked my bike out front and immediately stepped in dog poop. And then as we were about to enter, a lady came walking out with blood on her ankle who looked in shock saying she got bit earlier. But against our better judgment we still wanted to give the park a try as she did mention the dog who bit her was no longer there. I have a small schnoodle so we went to the small dog section which had obstacles courses and looked really great, until we were greeted by two dogs who were very territorial, obviously regulars. The owner was sitting reading a newspaper and did not even look up when the dogs started to aggressively nip and bark at my pup. Eventually he said, "they get a bit nippy", and looked back down. DO NOT BRING YOUR DOG TO A DOG PARK IF THEY DONT LIKE OTHER DOGS!!! Then another dog came in with their owner and this dog was more aggressive then the other two, as well as bigger. It should have been taken to the big dog section but because these are obviously selfish and irresponsible dog owners they really could care less about other dogs safety. So we basically were in and out of this place within 5 minutes because of these dog owners. I get that you want to exercise your dogs, but get off your butts and go for a walk instead of put other dogs lives in danger if you have not socialized them properly. My advice is to check out eldorado park's dog park. You have to pay for parking but you can get a yearly pass for cheap and it really weeds out the jerk owners! Everyone pays attention to their dogs and picks up after them. read more

This dog park is local and therefore convenient, which is a plus. It is also very large - another plus. Drawbacks - too many pitbulls. Gravel/dirt ground instead of grass/turf. At night it is poorly lit, which contributed to the smash and grab that took place on my SUV and resulted in a broken passenger window and thousands in cleaning/repairs. Park Rangers were sluggish to respond - to say the very least. Make sure if you go at night - don't park in the fringe areas. read more

Great dog park! Very large area for the dogs to run and play. Hand full of tunnels for the pups to run through when they are playing chase. Several water dishes and pooper scoopers there to clean up. Everyone is super friendly. Separate area for the little dogs. Only down side is that it is dirt... so dogs get a little dirty if they like to roll around but worth seeing them happy! read more

Yucky! I use to take my dogs to this park on a daily basis until far too many bad experiences. It has some positives...... it is relatively close to my house, less hassle then the beach with its sand and saltwater, and it is lit at night but FEAR has put a stop to our visits there. For example at the LBC dog park, most of the owners are too busy on their cell phones, smoking cigarettes, and talking to each other to pay attention to their dogs or their dog's waste! The last and final time I went to the LBC park was a Sunday and the park was packed. Owners were not paying attention to their dogs and there became a pack mentality among the dogs. My dog, a Sheltie, became the target of one of these packs of rottweilers and pit bulls. I quickly intervened and took hold of my dog. As I looked around for the other owners, there were none to be found. When I started yelling for them to get their dogs they finally showed up and told me I needed to let my dog 'play'. Now, playing to me is NOT my dog crying and 6 other larger dogs surrounding him. Now anyone that knows Shelties, knows that these are the MOST friendly and loyal dogs. They are not attack dogs and do wonderfully with children. Now I don't blame the other dogs or their breed types. I blame the owners for not paying attention and bringing aggressive dogs to the park that do not belong there. This park also sucks because there is NO grass....just dirt and gravel......mix that with water from the drinking bowls or morning mist and it's a mess. Also, did I mention that my friend's dog was bitten there! Uhhh ya! Their chocolate lab, that has no interest in other dogs but just loves to fetch the ball from her owners, somehow got bit leaving the park. Thank goodness she is okay after stitches and a $800 bill. Also, lots of dog walkers take their dogs there and there is NO way one person can effectively watch (and pick up after ) 12 dogs at one time! Need I say more about this park? read more

My small Pomeranian-Chihuahua mixed dog was ALMOST KILLED at this dog park. I have been to this park twice. The first time one dog drooled excessively over my dog (I'm talking gobs), while another, much larger dog tried to mount her over and over. It was disheartening, but not enough to deter me permanently from using the park. The second, and obviously last time, right as I was opening the second gate a large pit bull grabbed my dog by her neck and was thrashing her around. No one could get the pit to release its jaw. Several grown men had to come and cut off the pits air supply in order to save my dogs life. The pits owner told me the dog had a history of behavioral issues and a trainer even told her the pit shouldn't be at the dog park. It had been two months since she was told that, so for some reason figured enough time had passed and her dog would magically start behaving. What was even more alarming than her incredible lack of judgement was the fact her dog was STILL being aggressive towards the other dogs that were coming in, and she didn't understand the severity of the situation. I don't think she gives a shit about anyone else's dog. I would STAY AWAY from this park!!!! Anyone is allowed in, there are ZERO regulations. This will definitely happen again. read more

I'm a regular here with my pups. Although I love coming here, it's just waaaay to dusty. There's no grass what so ever, but there's always a handful of dogs there my pups can play with and there's plenty of space. I like that there are pooper scoopers around and stuff for the dogs to climb,benches for the owners to sit at, and trees for shade. Used to bring our dog here all the time however after a bad bout of giardia & numerous run ins with irresponsible owners we stopped coming here. Another down side is that it's all dirt/gravel, which tends to tear up dogs feet...don't bring your dog here if you care about their health & safety. read more

Just moved to Long Beach and we love this park because of all it's trees!

I really like the setting here at the park, it is next to a golf course and casting pond so the scenery is very pretty. It's a good size and has a seperate area for small dogs. There is a restroom but you need to pay five dollars to the Dog Park asscociation to get a key (helps prevent vandalizing). It could use a better water station at the far end but all and all a nice place for dogs to play and strech thier legs. read more
