Absolutely incredible pastries and super delightful and kind people. I found this place while on a quest for excellent croissants as a replacement for the formerly excellent croissants that you could get at Patisserie Claude in the west village - I want CRISPY outside and soft, buttery inside. That is surprisingly hard to find. This place does croissants PERFECTLY to my taste. I will go here when I want croissants. All their other pastries that I have tried are similarly well done. Correct salt level, correct sweetness (for the sweet pastries), correct texture. Definitely get their bourek if you are going. I also have to say the people there have been super kind to me when I've been in-person. They helped me in and out with my stroller and were sweet to my baby. Red Beard is a genuine East Village gem--an establishment filled with heart and soul, impeccable hospitality, and an evident reverence for craft. Cihan, the owner, creator, and visionary behind it, has brought something truly special to the neighborhood: a Turkish-inspired bakery and coffee destination where every detail feels considered. The croissant was, quite simply, exceptional. Its exterior offered the most satisfying delicate crispness, followed by an exquisite succession of airy, meticulously defined layers. At its center, it was impossibly fresh, feather-light, beautifully buttery, and so tender that it seemed to melt away with each bite. It is unquestionably among the very best croissants I have had in New York City--and, in my view, rivals those served by many esteemed French bakeries. The strawberry custard pastry was equally memorable: silky, luscious custard; beautifully fresh strawberries; and a refined balance of sweetness, texture, and lightness. Nothing overwhelmed; every element was in harmony. Red Beard Coffee & Bakery is not merely a place to stop for coffee or a pastry. Everything about this small Turkish bakery is wonderful. We tried their almond croissant, regular croissant, this cheese and sauce pastry, as well as their green juice, and beet juice. I will start with their juices. They had 3 ingredients or less, no sugar, just fresh pressed and tasted like it, the green juice had no apples or fruit to cut the sharpness of the veggies, but I found myself drinking it more and more & feeling great afterward. The same with the Beet juice, minimal ingredients, which is definitely a plus when we need it during certain times... I don't typically eat plain croissants and yet loved this one. It was so airy, light, and yet buttery...everything a croissant should be. For those of you searching for the best croissant in the city, this shop may be worth your visit. The almond croissant's sweetness was light and the almond paste was flavorful. This was our favorite and we finished it rather quickly. Lastly was the cheese and sauce pastry, which tasted very traditional in Turkey. The cheese is browned, the tomato sauce is rich, not too salty, and all of it is filled in this hearty pastry that is neither sweet or too savory, just a solid vessel for the pizza pie filling. Came to check out this cute coffee shop that has Turkish coffee as I saw advertised outside of the shop. I did not get any of this coffee though. I got a shaken espresso which was tasty I will say. The atmosphere of this coffee shop was fun and art work the popped out as you can see in the pictures. Staff I felt could have been a bit friendlier but maybe just was an off day we all have those days. If I am in the area and need a caffeine fix yes I would stop in here and try out another coffee drink. read more

I should have trusted my instincts the moment I walked in. The space felt unusually warm, and I noticed flies on the other side of the food counter. That should have been my cue to turn around and leave. But because this place had been featured on ABC News, I thought perhaps I was being too quick to judge. I had specifically come to try several of the items that had received attention and seemed to be highly recommended. Unfortunately, there was not one thing I purchased that I enjoyed. The pesto chicken sandwich was terrible. It was incredibly bland, with virtually no flavor, and the bread itself wasn't good. I also ordered the spinach and cheese börek, expecting something savory and flavorful. Again, it was remarkably plain and flavorless. I tried the simit, the traditional Turkish sesame bread ring, and found it extremely dry. Having eaten simit in Turkey, this was definitely not what I remembered or expected. Finally, I tried the pistachio cube, which seemed to be one of their signature items and was one of the main reasons I wanted to visit. Even that was dry and disappointing. I couldn't finish it. I genuinely don't understand the glowing reviews. I went out of my way to try several of the items this place is known for, thinking surely something would be good, and unfortunately I couldn't find a single thing I would order again. Now I'm a sucker for anything with Nutella, so naturally the Nutella banana croissant was my favorite. Even with the Nutella, the structural integrity of the croissant remained and it was perfectly flaky and buttery. Red Bear Coffee & Bakery is a small cozy addition to the East Village. the coffee shop has several tables and seats in a bright welcoming interior. while it's a fairly cozy space and doesn't feel cramped or cluttered. very well maintained and clean. of course, the magic happens at the coffee bar where a menu of coffee centric drinks are served along with offerings of sweet bakery items as well as savory items like simple sandwiches and such. stopped here twice so far--tried the drip coffee which was solidly good and worked well when you're in a rush. also got an Americano coffee on the second visit. my Americano was really good--smooth medium roast coffee served hot and a great coffee taste. there are another of bakery items on display--still regret not getting a big cookie that i eyed. the service is very friendly and attentive. if you're looking for a place to get a cup of coffee or a small bite to eat then Red Beard has you covered. plus they offer wifi if you need to sit and work or study. read more

Grabbed a delicious iced lavender latte and seasonal strawberry matcha latte on what was a very mucky and hot Sunday afternoon. We grabbed a pistachio muffin as well. Everything was so good! That pistachio muffin was DELICIOUS - the pistachio cream inside was everything I wanted. The lavender latte was subtly floral (ideal for us) and the strawberry matcha latte was actually ok! They just need to blend up the strawberries a bit more so that they can be sipped through a straw. They've got a bunch of pastry and coffee options (Turkish coffee!!). I came here after the spa and enjoyed a nice coffee and Egg Bagel sandwich: the bagel was toasted and dense with seeds, crunchy/dry to go well with the egg, it tasted fantastic. I usually just try to focus on food when writing about restaurants but I encountered one of the weirdest and rudest workers ever on my first visit here. From the moment I entered the restaurant the guy with the long ish hair in a ponytail gave me a look like I was entering a KKK meeting . It was bewildering , so I said hi to break the ice . He then nodded all while sporting a disgusted look and proceeded to go behind the counter to assist . I asked him about a pastry as it was my first time having Turkish pastries while being extremely mindful of my tone and tact . He seemed to get even more perplexed and bothered at my inquiring about the pastry. During this uncomfortable time , two customers entered . I was immediately skipped over them by the strange worker without a "one second" or "hold on " or any other polite phrase . Another worker , ( polite female) came over and assisted him in getting the new entrants their pastries ahead of me . No problem, I took it on the chin and looked at it as an opportunity to practice patience . Now, after getting rid of the other customers , it was now again my turn to continue ordering . They were both now just dealing with me . I asked a couple more questions while the girl now is taking charge realizing the awkwardness of the situation. The weird guy now relegates himself to just holding the bag open to place the pastries . I must have asked about 3 pastries before this guy , while holding the bag proceeds to react like a petulant child. He storms towards the back again sporting a disgusted and bothered look . Now , all doubt was eliminated . This guy was either a definitive weirdo or maybe didn't like people like myself . I proceeded to ask a couple more questions to the sweet lady before choosing a couple things . I even asked her if everything was ok with him . She tries to cover for him by saying, "he has a headache." Still standing now 15 feet or so away and sensing he might have messed up he proceeded to come back in the fray in the last moments and put my stuff in a bag for me to leave . This was truly one of the most uncomfortable and just downright ridiculous first time encounters in a food setting I've ever faced . Despite having what I think are quality pastries that seem to be even on the more "healthy" side, this encounter has really soured me on ever returning . I hate to think it was because of how I look I got this treatment but the signs points towards that . read more
