Red Chilli is an unexpected gem among Bay Area Indian/Pakistani restaurants. It's relatively cheaper and they give you a lot of food. Like expect to take home some extras. They have a pretty extensive menu covering dishes from Pakistan to India to Nepal so you're bound to find something to interest you. It is run by a family who is very nice and makes you feel at home. Would definitely recommend even if it's a bit of a journey. read more

A tasty gem on the border of the Tenderloin. A bunch of Nepalese dishes to choose from and some Indian dishes for the less adventurous. Very reasonably priced and so tasty! Chicken MoMo: Always a must when having Nepalese/Himalayan food! Thicker skin than a typical dumpling with spices other than the familiar Chinese 5-spice. Also, no soy/vinegar dipping sauce, instead some nice thick spicy dip. Very hearty and satisfying! Chicken Chilli: Somewhat like Chinese stir-fry, but with a Nepalese twist. The chicken chunks were breaded and had a thick spicy sweet sauce. That sauce also covered the peppers and onions quite a bit. I'm a fan. Kathmandu Roll w/ Paneer: The filling was similar to the chicken chilli, but with small chunks of paneer obviously. Lots of sauce, so it's a bit messy, but that also means it's really tasty. The naan wrap was up for the task, not breaking despite all the filling. Not sure how authentic this dish is, but it was definitely delicious. Chiya: A mildly spiced milk tea that was very rich on the dairy front. I needed some sugar to contrast the rich cream flavor though. read more

Oooooo just ordered delivery from this restaurant and truly satisfied with the meal. The butter chicken was smooth and had just the right amount of spicy. Also, I liked how they didn't skimp on the chicken! Moreover, the saag paneer (spinach and cheese) was tasty. It really complimented the butter chicken by providing some balance to the meal. Oh, and the momos (dumplings) were jam packed with flavor. I was surprised the momos were green and not the typical white flour wrapper. I ordered the Lamb Kadahi (Karahi), Chicken Naan, and a side of Basmati Rice. total with tax was : $18.00 they asked me if I wanted mild, medium, hot, or extra hot. I told them to make my food extra spicy hot. they're hella awesome I tell you. the lamb Kadahi was tender, spicy, and it was packed with flavors! the rice was good, fluffy and nice. the Chicken Naan was something I've never experienced before with bits of tandoori chicken inside the naan bread. hella tasty! service was really good, the place was tiny but clean and cozy. very homey. I haven't ordered form Thai place recently because I've been trying to cook my own food lately. But, it is definitely my go to place for Indian food! I love their butter chicken and lamb masala... love the naan the most, always hot and soft. I have also been to the physical location once and they are pretty warm and welcoming. My go to order here is Dal Makhani, Chicken Karhayi, Tandoori chicken/ platter. Its hearty, fulfilling and absolutely delicious. I like chowmein as well and their onion naans are great too! Ordered this today and it was delicious! I do not order Indian cuisine very often but still wanted to give my opinions. The chicken biryani was very flavorful. I loved that they put a lot of veggies (veggies as in onions and herbs LOL). They did NOT skimp on the chicken so for $12, this is extraordinary. The fish pakora and sauce that came on the side was delicious. I like the sweet sauce. So, funny story... a small group of us friends were hell bent on getting a burger from a fav spot here in the city. Drive to the spot and sure enough they were closed. Bummed, we all decided on Vietnamese food down the street. We drive down the road, windows rolled down, and as we drive past "Red chilli", the lovely and tasty smell of spices snaps all of our attention, I jokingly say that we would pull over to try the spot another day. We get to the Vietnamese restaurant and a little lady comes out exclaiming that they had closed. We all smiled and whipped right around and headed off to the tasty smelling hole in the wall up the street. The two gentlemen manning the dive were so nice and kind! Some great Indian food came out of that kitchen and we all enjoyed it soo very much! Come and give this spot a try, you won't regret it. read more

We were originally planning on going to a spot called NeWa close by, but it was closed when we got there so we followed our cute lil noses and walked here based on the reviews and our craving for Indian cuisine and culture. What the place lacked in space, it absofruitly made up for in flavor. Lagunitas IPAs for $4.50 in SF - don't mind if I do! Heads up to the parties of 3+ out there - get a family meal!!! We decided not to split our main meals and that left our table super full. We split the rice and bread. Dude if you like cheese quesadillas, just try the cheesy naan! Shit slaps!!! Some might say it just hit different. Here's a weird observation..my butter chicken was bright red? Strange right? Not to the flavor! Really Really really bad food quality. I cannot emphasize the word really bad. I ordered a big item for delivery to host for my bday and i was embarrassed! 10 items and there wasn't a single item that was edible. Its almost like the chef was angry and poured in a bottle of oil in each dish. Before even opening the plastic boxes i had to wipe down the dishes with tissue because there was SO much oil. Then when i opened them, it was over flowing with oil. Talk about artery clog in a day for years worth of artery clog if i ate all that food. Look at pics attached. 1. Goat dish was missing 2. Channa masala was crushed lentils filled with oil - see pic 3. Fish pakora - there was no fish just hard oil filled batter 4. Malai kebab special - pink inside and undercooked, hard outside. Don't order this! 5. Chicken kadhai - overflowing with oil. 2/3 oil to the top 6. Chicken seekh kebab was wet and soggy 7. Dal makhni - how can you go wrong with dal???????? There was no salt, no flavor and so much oil I threw everything away and complained to Caviar but this place deserves a bashing for the audacity they have to deliver such food. Go to North India instead! Skip this place unless you want to end up in the hospital from bad food poisoning or a heart attack with the amount of oil they poured. Ordered the goat karahi and the meat was limited. Mainly none and fat with pieces and meat here and there. Informed the cook and he came by poking at the small pieces of meat on my plate saying "is this meat, is this meat, is this meat". I thought it was pretty hilarious that he did that though. My first time trying Nepalese food! Came with two friends for dinner on a Monday evening and the restaurant was pretty empty. It's a small and cozy place with only 4-5 tables, so I would recommend coming in a small group or ordering takeout, which is what most people seem to do here. My friends have never tried Nepalese food either, so we ordered the chicken momo to share ($9.99), and I went with the California Combination ($11.99) for my entree, which is a fish and shrimp curry. The chicken momos come with a special curry-like dipping sauce, which already makes it very different from the Chinese dumplings I'm used to. I thought the dumplings were okay but not great. I couldn't taste exactly what was in the filling but there are definitely spices used for flavoring the meat as opposed to Chinese dumplings which rely more on soy sauce and salt. I asked for my California combination curry to be as mild as possible, but unfortunately it was still too spicy. One bite had my whole mouth burning up (yes, I'm pretty sensitive to spicy food), so I asked my server whether there was a way to make it less spicy, and she suggested bringing out a cup of their milder curry. I agreed, so soon I found myself scooping out the fish and shrimp from my original curry and dipping it into a new tomato-based sauce that was lighter and less spicy. My server tasted my original curry and said that they didn't make it any spicier than the base, so I guess I just can't handle the curry here. The fish and shirmp used in the curry was very fresh and I thoroughly enjoyed them after I switched over to the less spicy curry. I appreciated the service and my server's thoughtfulness in suggesting that she bring out a new curry sauce for me. read more

Good food! We were the only ones in the restaurant at first which might have been a bad sign but the food was worthy of the visit. We got butter chicken (highly recommend) and lamb vindaloo (wouldn't recommend). The lamb was really chewy and didn't taste good, so I wouldn't recommend. The basmati rice was average. Nothing special but not sure it needs to be special. The garlic naan bread was terrific. We got the cheese naan and I wouldn't recommend it. It was just ok. You gotta eat that one fast while the cheese is hot and not let it sit and get cold. I got a soup and it came out as cold frozen vegetables. I'm sure it's authentic Nepalese food but I did not like it. Tried one bite and blech. The great thing about this place is that it's super cheap. read more

It's my 3rd time ordering my favorite Kathmandu Chicken Roll.... when I ask spicy they listen. The butter chicken especially is flavorful. There's often a line of double-parked cars outside. I always take that as a good sign regarding restaurants. Their goat curry is worth the wait. We ordered it and several other items for carry-out. but they had just begun cooking the goat; so, they asked me to come back to get our order in two hours. So rich and flavorful. Great little Indian restaurant! First time here but the food was super fresh and had perfect amount of kick to it. Got the Nepali tea to start off with. Tea was great and reminded me of Chai from India. Probably was the same! Small little cup but very smooth, only had to add a bit of sugar to get it right Next got the Nepali thali. It's pretty big. My eyes went wide seeing the amount of food they brought out! Easily enough for 2 people. The carbs weren't even most if it. The 3 different curries took up most of the plate. Chicken was slightly hot, but the dal and beans curry were both perfectly seasoned. Kinda mild actually. Between the three and my chai tea the entire meals spice level was only medium. The dessert price kheer, wasn't overwhelming but it's kinda hard to find kheer that is. Including tip the bill came to 17 dollars, which is low for Indian dinner. My favorite was the spinach and cauliflower. The raw onions cut the richness of the veggies. The naan was lightly buttered and was delicious as well. MANGO LASSI Hands down best lassi I've had thus far. Perfectly creamy you could taste the freshness of the yogurt and the mango wasn't too sweet, but so flavorful. My friend loved it so much he ordered 2. Everything we had was so flavorful and the right amount of spice. We ended up in this hole in the wall after being turned away from another establishment due to our friend not having proof of vax. What a great place to end up. Saag Paneer is a greens/spinach and fresh cheese dish. Perfect seasoning and spice, deliciously made. It's my all time favorite. Bengan Bhartha. I'm so sorry if I'm spelling it wrong. But it's my second favorite dish. It's an eggplant dish with peas and other veggies. The version I had here was so deliciously seasoned I could probably eat 2 bowls, without any sides. California Combo. I didn't order this but I know it has a meat and seafood combo. And wow the sauce it comes it was actually my favorite. I kept smothering my rice with the sauce. So packed with flavor and just the right amount of spice. We paired our meal with garlic & cheese naan & pilaw rice. The naan were tasty and straightforward, nothing noteworthy, but still tasty. The pilaw rice was so refreshing because it had little pieces of cashew in it which provided a soft crunch and some raisins which gave it a light sweetness, definitely not overpowering, but made it an all around balanced side for our main dishes. All in all, they know what they're doing here. Nothing was lacking. The staff and possibly owners were super friendly and welcoming and attentive. And their flavor was 5/5. 3.5 STARS I was feeling a little delicate on Friday, March 11th due to some late night drinking the night before. What does that mean? I'm craving the comfort of Indian food for dinner! I placed an order for takeout through Eat24 since I had $2 off coupon code. Scheduled the pickup for 5:45pm since it's a short walk from work. *Vegetable Samosa (2): Deep-fried turnovers stuffed with onion, beans, spiced potatoes and peas ($3.99) *Chicken MoMo (10): Minced chicken marinated in Nepali spices stuffed in flour wrap and steamed, Served with a special MoMo sauce ($9.99) *Chicken Tikka Masala: Tender boneless cubers of BBQ chicken breast cooked in creamy sauce, Tomatoes ($8.99) *Garlic Naan: Freshly baked naan with fresh chopped garlic topping ($1.99) Tha samosas were crispy on the outside, soft and creamy on the inside. I love samosas with mint chutney, but theirs didn't have much flavor. I've never had chicken momos, but they are raved about here, so I had to try them. I love dumplings and these were great. Meaty with the minced chicken and the sauce was creamy with a little tangy. The chicken tikka masala was nice and creamy as well. I thought it was too sweet and not spicy enough the first day, but when I ate the leftovers the next day, the sweetness had mellowed out and a spiciness surfaced. The garlic naan was good, but I found it small and thin. Not enough to eat with the tikka masala. You'll need a couple of them at least to finish an order of curry. Scaling the Himalayas of the Tenderloin, i.e., the Jones Street hill, is not the same as hiking the Annapurna circuit, but one could argue that hazards abound in both situations. If it isn't about a Yeti sighting, then it's the deranged street person chasing you up the sidewalk with a shopping cart and a baseball bat. Welcome to the Tenderloin. But like the Annapurna circuit, you can come upon a jewel of a place that will give you nourishment during a respite and allow you to face the demons that may lurk on the outside. Funny thing is that I just had Nepalese food last month up in Sebastopol where it's served in the most highly rated restaurant in town, the Himalayan Tandoori & Curry House (review: http://bit.ly/12IQKhB). It's not a common cuisine, but I tend to like it a lot because it's a lot like Indian food with distinct Chinese influences and lighter in taste than either. Case in point are momos, which look just like Chinese pot stickers but are doughier and filled more liberally with ground meat. I frankly prefer the denser texture of momos because they remind me of the thick ravioli you can get in trattorias in Venice and the Veneto. The $8.99 Chicken Momos served here are superb. You get ten of them filled with minced chicken seasoned with Nepali spices, shaped as crescents in a flour wrap that's been lightly steamed (photo: http://bit.ly/1bHCaid). It comes with a spicy dipping sauce that provides the ideal contrast. Honestly I could eat these every day and watch my hips barely squeeze through the doorway. You HAVE to try the Kathmandu Roll. How is this not legendary among SF foodies yet? A Kathmandu Roll is your choice of chicken or paneer, sauteed with peppers and onions with spices and rolled in naan bread. It's basically an Indian burrito (but wrapped in naan, which in my opinion is even better than a tortilla), and it's HEAVENLY! Warning, it's pretty spicy. Couple that with the huge portion size, and you probably want to split your Kathmandu Roll with a friend. You might also need a mango lassi to help cut the spice. At just $7.99 for a very large serving, this is one of the best value meals in SF. A great price for a high-quality, unique dish! read more

I really like the garlic nan. It was warm and moist. Chicken Chilli was extremely good. It was spicy and the chicken was tender and moist. It goes great with nan. The milk tea was good. The palaw rice was so-so. It was spicy, but had very little flavor. Chicken Tikka Marsala was OK, but nothing special. On a second visit, I tried the Sadeko Badam. It was pretty good. It was like eating mexican salsa mixed with peanuts. It was in a bowl made out of papad. It had a unique flavor. Also the Lamb Biryani was good.
