My fiancé and I came here on a Sunday night and the place was packed! (Highly recommend making a reservation). After looking at the reviews, it seems that the filet mignon is the way to go, so that's exactly what I ordered. I love that the entrees also come with warm bread, a salad and potato option. The filet mignon was seasoned and cooked perfectly (I ordered medium). It was super tender and the sauce it came with made it a yummy combo. My fiancé ordered the opened faced ribeye sandwich, which essentially was a huge piece of ribeye on 2 chewy pieces of bread. He was not impressed and unfortunately the cut of ribeye wasn't the best. There wasn't much on it that was edible. I guess we were expecting for it to be shaved on top of the bread, which would have made it a lot easier to eat. What a great find! This a very comfortable venue done in an Adirondack motif. Beautiful view of the garden that provides the flowers decorating the interior. But beauty does nothing for appetite. The menu than enough options with beef, seafood and pasta being the offerings. We started with a wonderful chilled house salad with crumbly blue cheese dressing and raspberry vinaigrette. For our entree we had the Red Fox seafood pasta. I had the white version and my wife had the Red version. Both were great and generous portions. We had the leftover for breakfast and it was better still. It seemed that there was almost too much seafood it's such a thing as possible. Uniquely the seafood was cut up into smaller bites that you didn't have to cut yourself and so each spoonful of pasta had just the right amount of seafood to make it and enjoyable experience. All I can say is I hope they're open during the iced castle festival because when we come back we'll want to stop here and eat again read more

We thought we had fond memories of this place from a few years back. Either a lot has changed, or we were just so tired and hungry from walking up from town that it was good because we were starving. The building itself is really beautiful, it has rustic appeal with unique lights and local scenery framed on the walls. Today's experience was meh. The fresh loaf of bread with butter was good. Salad was ok. The mozzarella sticks were perfectly fried, but the tomato sauce lacked seasoning - it didn't even have salt, oregano - no, garlic - no...just plain. For our main meal, we had prime rib with rice pilaf, and filet mignon with a baked potato. So, the prime rib was super thick, but also super fatty and had a lot of gristle, good thing it was thick. The rice pilaf was served in a side dish, lacked flavor and looked like something you might get from a low budget cafeteria. The filet mignon was cooked exactly as I asked and was served with sauteed mushrooms also cooked just right. It was also accompanied by a teeny dish of gravy which looked and tasted like something from a powder or can/jar. The garnish on the plate with the filet was a wilted piece of lettuce and dry looking slice of tomato. Baked potato served still in foil on a side plate with a single serve container of sour cream, also very cafeteria like. (See price of meal at bottom) We ordered dessert... Why? Because we were celebrating our 24th wedding anniversary (on the actual date this time). Tiramisu - was good, not great, missing a lot of flavor that you expect in tiramisu. Homemade cherry pie a la mode. I don't know where to begin... The crust was thin, almost as if it was way over-mixed and over rolled, the cherry filling was so dark it didn't look appealing, and it was over baked too. I believe it was the owner who stopped to ask why I hadn't eaten it. I didn't know how to explain without being rude. She said she made it herself. I didn't respond because nothing nice came to mind. She said she used sweet cherries and not sour and that she made the crust and maybe that's why it wasn't what I expected... Oh, no, it was just really bad pie. She did take the pie off this bill for which I was thankful. The short of it, they need to use salt and spices, learn how to plate dishes in a more appealing way, don't bake if you don't do it well, and update the menu with some less 1970's dishes. All this for 84$ before the tip. No, we didn't have alcohol, just water and iced tea. Oh, side note, soda is charged per glass, no free refills which is ridiculous considering just how cheap soda is to serve and especially so when you put 3/4 of the cup full of ice. Thanks Owen and the other guy with the beard, you two were awesome. I left you a tip based on the assumed total if the pie was included because it's not your fault we didn't enjoy our meal. My husband and I do contract work in the Adirondacks, and we have a list of great places to eat. Any time we are in the neighborhood of Saranac Lake, or driving through on the way to somewhere else, this is our definite stop. The food is superb. I love the duck. My husband raves about the lasagna, which I can't eat due to a food sensitivity. I did have a very small bite of his, and he was right. amazing! I have had both the steak and the lamb in the past. Both were delicious. The atmosphere is quietly elegant, nothing too fancy. The servers have always been competent and welcoming. This is fine dining, so it isn't cheap. But it is quite reasonable, especially considering the quality. There are a lot of restaurants in nearby Lake Placid that ate twice as expensive, and really no better. read more

Well. Where to start. We were seated for a 7pm reservation. Our party was seated by 7:10. So far so good. Maybe took until 7:30 to even bring over water. Ordered drinks and food but I'm pretty sure it was near 8 at that point. They were prompt about the soup. Which was about a 4oz shot so we were all finished with that in minutes. Also we were given 1 thing of bread with the water. We were never offered a refill or anything even if it was an extra charge. Our salads weren't served until at least 8:30. At this point we're all starving. Lettuce and a like 6 pieces of carrots. Ok. By the time our dinners came out it was about 9pm. First dinner brought had sauce and a vegetable that was requested not put onto the dish. The waiter admitted all they did to resolve this was scrape off the mushrooms and sauce. So they offer to make another one. Fine. As soon as the second steak was requested, we all started eating. All of our food was either undercooked or tasteless and greasy. At this point we decide to just end the dinner. When I offered to pay for the drinks but definitely not a bunch of dinners we weren't going to eat (each dish had 1 or 2 bites tops eaten, so it's not like we killed the dinner and asked for a free meal), we were met with some anger from the woman who I can only assume runs the shift or the entire place. After a brief back and fourth she finally agreed to take the dinners off the tab, and after realizing I already agreed to pay for the alcohol and had sent my card to the bar to pay the tab, she decided to return my card and let us leave. Dinner was awful. The handling of the situation was awful. Just all around bad experience. According to a local guy we met the main cooks were a family that took a vacation. This was my first time at the Rex Fox Restaurant as I am from out-of-town. I hosted a dinner for my family and close friends (approximately 24 people). The food and service were excellent. We had several appetizers followed by salad, soup, and a choice of three entrees (Prime rib, Chicken Parmesan, or Salmon). Each of the entrees were very nice size portions and came with a choice of sides. Afterwards we had coffee/tea and a choice of three desserts. My wife had the duck, asked for it crispy, again, perfect. The chef garnished it with orange rinds and the orange meat, with a slightly sweet orange sauce. Excellent!! We were blown away by the amount of food as well as how delicious every plate was. I ordered the Lamb and it was so soft that it felt like cotton when I was eating it. Food was so great that, we came back the following night and ordered something different and it was still great. The decor is completely elegant and from the minute you step in, you feel welcomed and at home. When going for the dessert, you def have to try the tiramisù.... Is super delicious. Delicious! Amazing! Must come here (but just don't take my Prime Rib!!!). I have been coming here for years and years at the Red Fox with my father and brothers. They do it right every time I'm here and I hope they never change. Let's make this a good review, shall we? Food: I've had multiple dishes here, and I mean multiple. Prime Rib is my personal favorite and the house favorite. Cooked medium rare and coming out medium rare every time (10x+) is absolutely tasty and satisfying. You have the regular cut or the king cut - do the king for a couple bucks more. The rack of lamb is delicious and cooked medium rare as well every time. The au jus that comes with the steak is tasty. Pasta dishes are alright - nothing to brag about. Soups are okay as are the salads. Atmosphere: Elegant for up here. No need To dress up or even business casual. Jeans and a nice shirt will work just fine. Overall: Good place to eat for up here. They pride themselves on the meats. Soups are decent, basic salad. The pasta is okay - stick with the meat. You have to take the bad reviews seriously and ignore the positive ones regardless of where you choose to eat. I can't deal with a $50 plate when the filet is topped with canned mushrooms. Canned mushrooms are gross and the lobster tail was lacking flavor and shouldn't require a steak knife to cut through. The soup was good but I'm pretty sure it came out of a can. I just can't get over the canned mushrooms at a place like this. I've cooked at enough places to know what I'm eating. read more

Where to begin? This is our favorite restaurant in all of the Adirondacks. My husband has a family business in Ray Brook and I come up once a year. This restaurant is the place I HAVE to go every time I'm here. We go back year after year and take friends and family here. We love the scallops and prime rib, but you can't go wrong with anything on the menu! The Caesar salad is out of this world, the best we've had. I ordered a steak and scallops (I was a bit reluctant to get seafood concerned about freshness due to the location). The jumbo scallops were very fresh and prepared perfectly. The steak was very good, also prepared perfectly. A large portion of fresh bread came out (which I did not finish as it was a lot) and the starter salad was also fresh. Wow! We have passed this place every summer for many years and never stopped in for a meal until last week. On our last night in Saranac Lake, we decided to try it. The outside is unassuming but once you enter the front door, the interior is very nice. The service was amazing and the food just blew us away. They bake fresh sourdough bread (we had 3 loafs) and the meals come with soup and salad. The kids meals are a bargain (and huge) and the prices are reasonable overall for what you get. My oldest son had the adult steak and shrimp and says it's the best steak he's ever had. He loved the seasonings. I had salmon and it was delicious. This is our favorite restaurant in the Adirondacks now and we will make sure it is now a part of our summer tradition. read more
