With that being said, I will be back, hopefully it was just a fluke. Cream cheese wontons and egg rolls were Luke warm and soft, not crispy at all. Almost as if they were batch made and sat under a warmer. The fried rice didn't fill up the container and had just a grease flavor. If you are reading this, don't let this review be the only reason you go somewhere else. But if you have had similar experiences, go to House of Wong in Roseville. Worst food ever. The food came out BURNT tasting, and trying to get someone to take back the food was nearly impossible. They appeared to be too busy vacuuming and talking on the phone. NOT ONCE did they come to ask how things were and if we needed more drinks. After they brought the replacement out then they asked how was the food but never offered to refill anyones' drinks. I had no choice but to re-enact the scene from "Bridget Jones Diary": order Chinese take-out and eat it alone in my hotel room while singing to All By Myself! I ordered with Red Ginger China Bistro for the first time via Door Dash. Ended up getting wontons, donuts, house fried rice, orange chicken and sweet and sour chicken. The orange chicken was probably the worst I've ever had, the sauce was bitter and the chicken was extremely soggy where the breading was falling off the chicken. I've had take out/delivery with other restaurants and received breaded fried chicken dishes in sauce that were not extremely soggy. It may be better when ordered and eaten at the restaurant, but I wasn't very impressed and ended up tossing the dish because it was difficult to eat. Sweet and sour chicken dish ended up being a chicken nugget dish because the other main part of the dish, sweet and sour sauce was missing. I heard good things about the sauce especially, so it was disappointing to not have received one of the main parts of the dish. The chicken itself was fried well and decent quality meat though. The other three dishes were good though, cream cheese wontons, donuts and house fried rice. Others may have a better experience if they try it. I was here when the old owners had this place, and I think the Honey Walnut Shrimp was better. And a larger portion. But now, WOW !!! All the Red Chinese decorations, with hand painted murals on the walls, cool things hanging from the ceilings, and paper dragon on the wall make it an Americanized Chinese experience. Works for me, because....... YES Shrimp Egg Foo Yong. Done just like I like it, crispy with a rich dark brown sauce. Even though the shrimp was on the inside of the patty and not piled on top (ick), there weren't many pieces of shrimp. However, the shrimp bites in there were large and tasty. I would rather have a few good tasting shrimp, than a whole bunch of yucky ones. I do remember more shrimp in previous visits. Hmmm.. Yes, the bar is a fun fun area, and the addition of the multiple aquariums that house potential meals like crab, lobster, cod, and shrimp are fascinating. Just beer and wine here, but that is OK. I went out of my comfort zone and ordered a Tsingtao beer. AACCCK. If you drink Rolling Rock like me, you probably won't like this hearty beer. The bar sign said Happy Time was 3 - 6pm, and included $2 appetizers. Nice . But ...no lunch menu or lunch sized portions. Darn. The wine list is embarrassing, but they do offer a Plum Wine from China that I will try next time. I honestly enjoyed eating here with a big group of family and friends. My aunt ordered a lot of food and most of it were slightly above average. Some dishes were oily and too salted. If it tasted better maybe a higher rating from me. But overall I would rate this a 3.5/5 stars for me. It was just slightly above average but not by much. I've came here a few times now so here is the low down. They serve dim sum that is not as good as Mandarin Kitchen but better then Yangtze. The service here at dinner is not very good at all. I sometimes have a hard time understanding the servers and I usually know what I want to order. The dinner food quality is slowly getting worse for my taste and service is getting worse as well. Example tonight was they brought out our Peking duck, without hoisin sauce, onions or cilantro and brought out Teapots without tea cups; just the little things that make you face palm a bit. We happened upon this restaurant when our hotel room next door was held up because half the cleaning staff were out sick. We thought we'd take a chance on this place since we were close. We are so glad we did! Huge portions (although, to be completely honest the price reflected the larger portions. This place isn't cheap food!) and the flavor was amazing. The food was spiced so well and they made our Chinese food favorites flavored differently. We really liked the new, fresh take on our old faves. The only complaint was the bok choy was not cut, so they were very large chunks and hard to eat without a knife. (Which, of course we didn't have.) Other then that, fantastic! read more

This deserves more good reviews on Cantonese dishes. I intended visiting there primarily wanting some rice noddles for the lunch in the following few days - I was not hungry. I ordered the top broth pea tip; but was told pea tip was out, and recommended with black mushroom over crispy tofu with Shanghai BoM choi garnish around instead. The temperature hot, smooth tofu coated with crispy layer, served beneath the black mushroom sautéed in light flavorful oyster sauce, you know it is an authentic Cantonese chef preparing it. I browsed the rest of the menu, there were several combination menus for 8-12 people. I saw jellyfish and pork knuckles, and asked to be included in my take out order (dry e-fun and Chinese style beef steak). The bistro has a live seafood tank, and there are many large round tables in the back section designed for Asian wedding banquet. Chatted with few American locals, all agree food is good and location is in a rare mini-mall building. read more

Hands down the best cantonese restaurant I've been to in the Twin Cities area. Sadly it is pretty far from where I live and I've never been for dim sum. They offer 2 menus for dinner (and i'm assuming for lunch). A more americanized menu and a more authentic Chinese menu. The food is always good and there's tons of things on their menu that I miss from living in CA! If I lived closer, I'd eat there all the time! I can't speak to what's on their americanized menu except i'm sure there's things like sesame chicken and general tso's. read more

Ok I've been here many times since that first review, and I have to say...this place is great. Easily my new favorite dim sum stand-by since Jun Bo (RIP). Hidden in a small strip mall between a liquor store and a Subway (I think), this restaurant is one of those places I don't reaaalllyyy want to share how awesome it is because I'm greedy and want it all to myself. But, that's not cool, and sharing = caring. Aside from dim sum, their authentic Chinese menu items, like golden fried sole, are fantastic, but 98% of my experiences here have been for dim sum. I don't think I've ever looked at the *other menu* or buffet. Some of the dim sum all-stars are: - the eggplant and shrimp dish - shrimp ha gao - siu mai - fun guo - jian dui - steamed char siu bao - lo mai gai - congee - ham sui gao The staff is always really friendly and accommodating, and the food is very consistent and, in my recent visits, have noticed them branching out more with their selection. It's almost like two restaurants in one. You might go there and see people up front eating cream cheese wontons and french fries, but look in the back and you'll find many families and lazy susans. This review is for Dim Sum only. It's been a while since I've had dim sum; most places in the metro are either too pricey for what you get or the quality/service is terrible. Red Ginger has been in it's current location for over five years and it's currently under new ownership. They recently started dim sum on Saturday/Sunday and had a special going on until the end of the month ($3 for sm/med/lg item). We arrived around noon on Easter Sunday and the place was very busy, we had to wait about 10 minutes for a table. After we were seated, waters were brought out and we gave our order for the tea that we wanted. Pretty quickly, a round of carts came by our table an we quickly ordered whatever items we liked. We grabbed the usual, sui mai, ha gao, chicken feet, pork buns, ha cheong fun and congee. Quality wise, it's hit and miss between items. Hot items were either lukewarm, warm or cold. Clearly, many of the hot items were frozen and just reheated. The chicken feet were OK and the ha gao (shrimp dumplings) were alright; I've had much better in the Twin Cities. The ha cheong fun (basically shrimp wrapped in thick uncut rice noodle) was a big miss. This is always served with sweet soy and the meat should be wrapped inside, not served over/around it. The baked items and desserts were pretty good, but the rest of the items were average (if not below that). The pricing was interesting. They had a special for $3 any sm/med/lg item (we got 17 items and 1 item that was special for $6) and the bill came to $57. Now, they charge a "service fee" and also charge for tea. I'm not a fan of the "service charge" for any size table; when it comes to large tables (say 6+) I understand, but we only had 3 people and the service charge was about $10. Also, many other dim sum places around the Twin Cities don't charge for tea; it's always assumed that tea is provided as part of dim sum. After the $57, add in the "service fee", tea charge and taxes and the bill comes to $75. Overall, the dim sum was average (for many items, below average) and not a fan of the "service fee". read more

This place needs help. And when my mom visits Minnesota from socal next month, my aunt will take her to dinner here and she will make my review seem genuinely kind. But I'm from LA so don't take my word for it. So between all the conversations I heard during the brief time I was here, this Red Ginger China Bistro was founded by owners or relatives of people at a place called Rice Bowl. I'd have to guess the quality of that place was nonexistent as well. Every family-run Asian restaurant had Asian roots at some point, right? Where did they lose their way? Is it because they're taking advantage of an area where other competition doesn't exist and dumbing down their quality? Or is it because the people they cater to don't have any basis for comparison themselves? Or maybe it's because the general scarcity of quality fresh ingredients make creating an enjoyable ethnic meal difficult (thank you for that, Cub Foods). Anyways, it seems to me that anyone and their mom could open up a Chinese restaurant here not knowing anything about the cuisine except for reading a Wikipedia article. All I ask is that you eat at 50 Chinese places in your lifetime wherever you find them (might be hard to do this in the Midwest) and decide for yourself what the baseline level of quality should be. You'll have good, you'll have bad, and you should figure out what you like and don't like. Here are some of my most memorable experiences at Red Ginger: - The daikon was hard. The daikon was boiled in a soup. Wait, what? It's still hard? Is that even possible? My irrational scientific theory leads me to believe that to survive the Minnesota winter, daikon in this region developed more dense structural material over the years. - Braised beef was very poor quality. It was the closest experience I had to eating leather. I don't know what kind of cut this was, but I've shopped at Cub Foods before and I do know that they have much better than this for very reasonable prices. - "Beef chow fun" was a nice surprise. I didn't know I could order a Chinese dish here and get Pad See Ew instead. In fact, it made me think about the Thai station at my college dining hall and how I vowed to not eat there again. - The tea and the hot water tasted about the same. The difference was that the tea had color. The melon slices afterwards made the most sense, that tasted just fine. A close second place is awarded to the fortune cookie for also being normal. The server here was charming to say the least. She's been working in Chinese restaurants for 30+ years and for a non-Asian person, knew her fair share of broken Cantonese. Definitely made my dinner more enjoyable meeting her, she's a one and only. You'd have to pay me to eat the lunch buffet here. read more

We went to dinner here. We ordered the Szechuan Beef and Sesame Chicken. We always order the sesame chicken as the "staple" chinese dish that we compare restaurants on. I am in search for tasty Sesame Chicken that compares to my hometown favorite. The beef dish definitely won the battle between these two. The pieces of chicken were so small that you were pretty much just eating little chunks of fry batter. The sauce was alright, not too sweet. However, in my opinion, there's better sesame chicken nearby at Guang Zhou (Hwy 65, 85th Ave). I'd say the sesame chicken was comparable to Pagoda (Dinkytown), a little worse than Shuang Cheng (Dinkytown) and better than Camdi (Dinkytown) and others around the Minneapolis area. With that, would we go back again, probably. Would I recommend it to somebody, probably not . . . until I had a dish that was to die for. Perhaps I will update this review once we go again. On the plus side, they do have lunch specials for $5.50. One thing that I did notice, they have a bar with a couple TVs and their beer prices were very reasonable, domestic taps were $2.50. I have been eating at Red Ginger for probably the last 5 years. I want to start off by saying that the food, staff and overall quality of everything has vastly improved since the new owner took over (I think within the last year or so). I have always liked Red Ginger, but now I have the opportunity to like it even more! They even deliver, which the old owners never did. Wish I lived in Shoreview still! The restaurant is very clean and updated. Nice seating area, or you can sit at the bar if you'd like. They do have a great happy hour from 3-6:00, also. I believe they have beer and wine, but not a full bar (I am mostly a wine drinker, myself). My husband and I always start off with the pan-fried dumplings. They are filled with a pork/veggie mixture and the dipping sauce is amazing! We get our food to-go quite a bit since my husband works near there, and the dumplings are always good but SO delicious when you can eat them in the restaurant!!! We have tried the lettuce wraps were also very good - You get a TON of the filling and it reheats very well for leftovers :) The Lo Mein here is the best you can get around, and I definitely recommend going with the house Lo-Mein. The mixture of the different meats is just perfect. If you're not a "house" kinda person, I absolutely 100% recommend the beef. Their beef is out-of-this-world in just about anything you order!! My most-recent second favorite is the Hong Kong Beef Chow Fun. It's a thicker, maybe pad-thai type noodle with garlic, onion, been sprouts, beef and a soy-sauce based sauce. My husband also just tried the Singapore RIce Noodle dish and he said it was very good. That was rice noodles with shrimp, pork and chicken (I think) in a kind-of spicy sauce with green and red peppers. Not my thing, but he loved it! Genuinely surprised by this place! I have only ordered food off the regular menu, so I cannot speak for dim sum here. It's pretty far away (30 minutes drive) from me in Shoreview, but I came here twice in one week! Beef Stew Hot Pot One of my favs so far. Fatty pieces of meat, love daikon and lettuce (on the bottom) cooked this way in a hot pot! The green onions gave it a fresh bite. Salt & Pepper Fried Soft Shell Crab Sorta pricy but very good and crunchy. Loved the chopped pepper/onions and seasoning on top. Fish in XO Sauce Hot Pot The mushrooms are sooooo goood, and the fried bean curd is great too - good breading on the outside and soft on the inside. Fish itself was not bad either, but the mushrooms/bean curds are definitely the highlights. Fried Chicken Hong Kong Style Skin super crunchy, chicken is moist, and the lemongrass/ginger oil sauce was super yummy. Tung Choy in Fermented Bean Curd Sauce Stir Fry Love these leafy veggies, and I also secretly like fermented tofu (the ones in the jar)! I think tung choy are also called water spinach? Make sure to mix it up a bit. Seems like most of the fermented bean curd sauce settled on the bottom - my leftovers were a bit salty but it was perfect when dining in lol. Sizzling Beef Short Ribs with Black Bean Sauce Beef is tender, veggies had a great crunch, and the sauce is decent - but I was more impressed by the other dishes. Clams with Black Bean Sauce The sauce itself was good, slightly on the salty side but it is black bean sauce after all. Clams not very fresh though, bit into sand for quite a few of them. Overall, I would definitely come back again. There are a few items I am eyeing on the menu, and they also have family styled dinners as well! Friendly service and large portions. Good price for a small lunch buffet and my wife and I enjoyed it. I loved the fact that they had real Chinese hot mustard! Hard to find in the northern suburbs of Minneapolis. Up here, many buffets only have packets of Chinese mustard instead. My biggest complaints are that the food is too salty; soy sauce is not needed. The saltiness should be a matter of taste for the individual. Allow the customer to control that with the soy sauce instead. Also, the only tea available was oolong. It came as single tea bag suspended in a teapot. Green tea would be a nice option and the tea should be stronger than that produced by a single tea bag. read more

My first time here, my wife and sister in law have been here a few times. The restaurant was not very busy yet as it was around 5 PM when we arrived. Our server was very friendly and she had no problem recommending dishes as well as letting us know what she would not order. We had the steamed dumplings for an appetizer and they were good. I had the Red Ginger Pad Thai per our server's suggestion and it was very good! My wife had the Chicken with Cashew Nuts and my sister in law had the Kung Pao Chicken. Both if these dishes were very nice. The Kung Pao could have been a little more spicy, but if you ordered it spicier, I'm sure they could oblige. They also have a lunch buffet that is supposed to be pretty good, but this is second hand info, not from my experience. We will definitely return. They have a happy hour until 6 PM that includes appetizers and drink specials. Nice family atmosphere restaurant with a bar area.
