If you are coming here its all about the burger. They have other great food but the burger is what you should be trying. Its very good. It is pricey since it is dry aged meat so have to be willing to spend the money. One thing Red Hook gets right about their burger where most places get wrong by over loading it with to much toppings isRed Hook keeps it simple with just cheese. They let the meat shine which is what it should be about. When you over load with too much toppings it overwhelms what you should be tasting, the meat. With each bite you taste the meat which is full of flavor. Good stuff. My only complaint would be is for it to be served with a legit order of fries instead of three big steak fries. Make sure you have a reservation it gets very crowded. The host will take good care of you and he is extremely friendly and affable. read more

Getting to Red Hook Tavern is quite the trek coming from Upper Manhattan, especially if you want to use public transportation, but it's well worth the effort. We arrived at the restaurant half an hour past our reservation time, and to our delight, they graciously held our table for us. We all ordered the infamous burger and it was everything you'd anticipate from a $30 burger--absolutely phenomenal. It was simple and topped with just cheddar and a slightly grilled onion, yet incredibly delicious and I wouldn't change a single thing about it. read more

The place just feels like an old school Brooklyn homestay. It's as if it's been there forever. Let's face it, the burger is one of the greatest burgers to ever grace planet Earth. The servers have fashionable attire, are affable, and exhibit a professionality with ease and comfort. I've also had the croque monsieur which used a delicious gruyere and a liberal, but not overdone, amount of mustard. Really excellent. I look forward to exploring more of the menu, but God is it difficult to not just order that burger each and every time. My review isn't all that different from others here. It's -- okay? The burger is good, but hideously overpriced. You don't get enough fries. Otherwise it's fine. Also, they were super nice, but they seated us about 40 minutes past our reservation time. I have been sending my Bf pictures of the burger for about a year now. We often would dissect the burger and talk about trying it when in the area. My wonderful BF surprised me last Sunday afternoon!! He made reservations and we ate outdoors. We started our meal with a wedge salad which was perfection. It was probably one of the best wedge salads I have had in my life. The thick cut bacon, mustard seeds, dill and decadent blue cheese made that salad! We wanted to try the French onion soup but they forgot to take it off the menu. (I believe they sold out) As for the burger, I ordered mine medium but got medium rare. I couldn't have been happier with the way the chef cooked it. This burger is hands down a game changer!! It's one of the best burgers I have eaten in my life. I have had the peter lugar burger and there is NO comparison!! People may have their preference with the type of cheese, bun, onions, lettuce, tomatoes they prefer but everything about this burger works!! The seeded bun is airy, light but was able to hold that juicy burger without being too doughy. The burger itself was dry aged and properly seasoned with salt. The American cheese and onion melted into the burger. Not only was the burger delicious, wait til you try the fries!! They were like a baked potato on the inside and a perfect crispness on the exterior. I had the best experience at the Red Hook Tavern! It's pretty clear that the owner, Billy, takes a lot of pride in his restaurants because we saw him go out of his way to make guests comfortable AND the place was close to spotless. I'm sure seating was tough for a little while, but the outdoor spaces they created were perfect. Covid made that a reality for everyone. Back to the food, it's a ton of amazing flavor mixed with backstory. You eat a kimchi taco because that food meant something to Billy growing up. All his plates have a story like that and it's 100% worth it to ask him about them if you catch him. Great stories with even greater tastes. Don't go in expecting only smoked meats and don't pass up the chance to try something you hadn't planned to, because it's ALL GREAT! When your done eating, go down to RedHook Tavern for a drink and incredible dessert. If you're lucky, Rebecca and Daniel will be working when you go in. They are awesome. Needless to say, Billy's restaurants are more than worth the price of admission. Our evening eating at both places and meeting the awesome team at both locations was one of our favorite dining experiences we've ever had. Great spot in Red Hook that opened up in 2019. Its run by the same folks who run Hometown bbq down the road from here. Love the vibe and look of this spot. The staff is super friendly and got to chat a little with their Sous Chef Johan and learn a little about their kitchen and Connor their Head Bartender. We started with the Country Ham Croquettes which were ridiculously good! Could've had a whole bowl of these. They were made with one year aged white cheddar, house made dijonnaise & rye bread crumbs Romaine wedge salad with apple wood smoked bacon, blue cheese, pickled mustard seed, sourdough crumbs & buttermilk herb dressing. Really tasty salad. Did not expect that from from a wedge salad. The burger was the star during our visit..appeared like everyone there for the evening was ordering it and it definitely did not disappoint.  This is a solid, classic burger with no frills made with a mix of dry aged meat and other secrets that makes this one of the best burgers you will have in NYC . Definitely worth the trip to Red Hook to have this burger! Its served with  American cheese, raw onions, side of potato wedges and pickle. We saw someone dip the wedges into a side of creamed spinach, so we did the same! Looking forward to going back soon. They open at 5PM daily and there was a line when we got there at exactly  5pm. They do take reservations. We didnt have reservations; however were seated at the bar right away. The servers were awesome! I had the dry aged burger. The burger itself was good however there were two things I didn't like. 1. The white onions on the burger were lightly cooked. I believe the burger could be improved by substituting white onions for red onions or the white onions being caramelized. 2. The burger had a bit too much pepper for me. One of the two best meals I've had in the last six months. The other was in Maine but more on that in a separate review. I made an early reservation because it was the first one available. No big deal for me as I planned to go IN and I prefer to have ample time for my dinner to settle. Upon entry you quickly realize it does actually feel like a local tavern where all are welcome. The hostess was very nice and we were seated immediately. We started with wine and ordered quickly. We were hungry! We ordered the salad, clams, croquettes, and the burger. EVERYTHING was delicious! I wouldn't change anything. The salad dressing was so good I could have had it as a drink, the croquettes were both crunchy and creamy, the clams were perfectly cooked, and the burger was seasoned to perfection. Although, I could only finish half because looks can be deceiving and it was more filling than i thought it would be. No worries, it still tasted good later that night at home. read more

as of december 2022, after his long search for the best burger in the city, after one bite, my bf declared the burger at red book tavern, "the best burger" he's ever had in nyc. he's a honest and fair critic, a bunnoisseur of burgers and a lover of meats, and to declare such a bold statement.. it means something lol ok enough bunnanigans, this place really is the freakin teets! i came here once during the summer of 2020 pandemy and got the burger to-go and even then i was blown away and wanted to bring my bf earlier this year but saw that it had closed down bc of a fire. it was only a few weeks ago when i saw the burger featured in a instapost of the best burgers round up that i found that i was open again! we got rez here for tuesday evening at 7pm and we got seated immediately by one of the amazing servers. the place isn't huge with about 7-ish tables and a bar. service was impeccable and everyone was super friendly. the vibe is like that of a neighborhood spot meets old-timey bar meets a cafe? the interior has so much character and i overheard the owner tell another table that nothing from the bar is newer than 1911 and that the lamps used to be the original gas lamps they used outside to light the streets that they made electric - so cool! i really enjoy the small touches like that! anyways ok to the food sheeeeeesh. we started with the shrimp cocktail, shared the tortelloni and each got a burger. i know.. we can EAT. shrimp cocktail - fresh, perfectly cooked and the cocktail sauce was extra horseradishy, just the way i like it. tortelloni - omg. this. was. so. good!! the sage! the hazelnuts! the kabocha, oh my! ever flavor so perfectly balanced, each bite bursts with so much flavor of the original ingredients. we were BLOWN by this dish. burger - the grand finale. if you are looking for a good quality, juicy, no frills, of meaty, cheddary, crispy briochey burger? this is it. someone call lizzie mcguire bc this is what dreams are made of. they toasted the brioche so it had a crispy exterior. the onions were raw which helped cut thru the greasiness of the freakin flavor filled patty and the cheese wasn't too cheesey but you could taste the cheddar.. i'm drooling rn. my bf got this with bacon which was a fat slab that really could've been enough for two people. i had a bite and i'm not a huge bacon person and it was good. but again, i preferred my burgers without bacon. the burgs came with round fries which weren't my favorite - i preferred the log steak fries that it came with the last time i went but they were still good - and a spear of pickle. so, so perfect! my bf also got drinks which he said was really well made! go just, go. do it. but make a rez bc it got busy, quick. read more

So let's start by how difficult it is to get a reservation here . Why ? There's only maybe 10 tables inside . Weather permitting and you can withstand the cold & rain you can sit in the outdoor area they built. Weekend menu much smaller which would be fine . We had to order any appetizers and meal all at one time. Received the ham & cheese croquettes?? No taste other than the oil it's cooked in and SALT!! Next received the French onion soup a a whopping price of $18!! Steep. Well another disappointment, soup was flavorless no cheese on top of soup but somewhat melted on side of a smaller size cup. Definitely was missing something and seemed to have some type of vinegar taste in the back. NOT GOOD AT ALL and no way worth $18 !! From this point we waited over 45 min for 2 burgers as we watched other tables seated after us receive their food before us. Waiter never visited the table during all this.finally got his attention to ask where the burgers were and when he walked back after supposedly checking very small portion of tables he walked right passed us never gave us an update . He clearly forgot our order. a manager approached me to kinda apologize for it taking sooooooo long with the excuse there is just so much room on the grill. The size of the grill isn't the problem !! I explained that many other people who were seated way after us have already received their food ! He seemed to be somewhat annoyed by what I said but was just stating a fact. Got a couple of minutes? Good... here's a little back story for you. July, 2019... I'd been anticipating the opening of RHT for some time; reading about it in article after article after article and getting hyped because a) it's a new restaurant in the neighborhood and b) I'm a Hometown BBQ fan. Couldn't wait. A friend and I were heading down to Ikea one night and I had realized that RHT JUST opened the evening before. Perfect. We'd get there when they open, put our name in for two seats at the bar (if available at all) - didn't really mind how long we'd have to wait because our intent was to go to Ikea and well, either way, there's a lot to do and see in Red Hook. We arrive at RHT - the place is bustling - just as anticipated. We met Benny as we walked in, asked if it was even a possibility to get. Benny took our name and said it'd be about an hour wait. Awesome. So we went and had a drink down the street. We went back to Benny after close to an hour and there still wasn't anything open. That's okay, it's opening week... however, this happened time and time again that night, extending our wait time even further. We must have been waiting a total for close to 2.5/3 hours. And so the pattern begins... Fast forward to January 12, 2020... a Sunday evening, 4:47pm - (RHT opens at 5pm). We walk over from Fort Defiance where we had grabbed a cocktail until it was time to walk over to RHT. As we're walking over, we see a line of about 15 people standing in front of the door and... at this point, our plan is slowly starting to unfold the closer we get, but, it is what it is. As they start letting customers in, the party of 2 just in front of us wound up getting the last two seats at the bar for walk-ins. With that, we put our name in for 2 and were told by Benny that the wait would be anywhere from an hour to an hour and a half. Not too bad. That was a real cute estimate because once again, that timeframe was drastically off. Fast forward almost 3 hours later aaaaaaand... YOUR TABLE IS NOW READY! Really? Is this a joke? Nearly 3 hours later? For a party of 2 to sit at the bar? On a Sunday evening? When we were the very next party of 2 and were quoted half of that wait time? And we were there 13 minutes prior to the doors opening? Something smells fishy to me - and it's not because we're in Red Hook and close to the water. We ultimately got a spot at the bar after almost 3 hours, the first time we tried getting in, (July), so below is my review of that one event. This past Sunday, we wound up leaving. Obviously get the burger and the wedge salad. Both amazing. Ambiance: 3.9 Cocktails: 3.1 Food: 4.3 Service: 3.3 Wait Time/Check-In Process/Reservation System: 0.7 Billy - this isn't your first rodeo... this is your industry. With all of the resources you have readily available to you, there's gotta be a better way of giving your customers a more accurate wait time & understanding of your reservations system. I mean, I dine out quite frequently and haven't had this much of a disaster being quoted a wait time, not once but twice! Guys, c'mon... get it together. The one and only thing I can say so far that's been consistent here is the inaccuracy of their wait time. 1983 called... they want their reservation system back. * Full transparency, I'd love to actually review Red Hook Tavern again... once we actually get in & have a fair shot at it.* read more

Burger Review Time! After a disappointing first burger experience a few months when RHT first opened, I decided to hold back on writing a review until I tried it again. Perhaps it was an off day for them... Well, I headed over to the Tavern to give their hyped cheeseburger another shot and, sadly, I wasn't blown away. Despite the burger being cooked perfectly and having a slight "funk" from the dry-aged beef, it was WAY too salty and dry. However, the thick crispy fries on the side were delicious and seasoned perfectly. Worth the wait, hype, and price? Nope. There are plenty of superior spots with excellent burgers in the city, from Peter Luger (which is basically the same style of burger for less money), Brindle Room, Minetta Tavern, and The HiHi Room. read more

We are regulars to RHT - literally have dinner there like once a week and love the cozy feel and warm decor. Connor, the bartender is a great dude. I dream of the wedge salad and burger nightly. We also took advantage of their special Chinese New Year menu and it was insanely delicious. Let me start by saying the service/atmosphere is 5 stars. Benny the host is so friendly, patient, and warm. A friend of ours was scoping out reservations for weeks and couldn't get one; still, we took a chance and arrived at 5:30pm on a Saturday night. We were told then that it would likely be a 2-2.5 hour wait for our party of 4. We grabbed drinks at other bars nearby (the restaurant itself is not big and there isn't room to wait at the bar) and checked back in after 2 hours. Benny said that he could seat us faster if we could split up, but he would try to seat us at least close together. So very accommodating on a busy night! When seated, our waiter was also very friendly. He came to check on us throughout our meal and didn't make us feel rushed at all despite a long waitlist. We were seated around 8pm and overheard Benny telling incoming parties that the wait was still 2+ hours and the kitchen closes at 10:30pm. Plan accordingly! And be kind to Benny! We came for the burgers, obviously. Our waiter informed us that they prepare their burgers on the rare side. So, if you're going for medium, expect medium-rare. By all accounts, it was a fantastic burger. The cheese really is made to be on it. My least favorite part was the slab of raw white onion on the bottom. The juiciness from the burger I'm sure is meant to help cut through the onion, but whew it's a lotta onion! I took out some pieces so I could keep eating and enjoying. The three fries are not as ridiculous as they look. They are very good, served so hot they probably came right out of the fryer, and well seasoned. Wanted more of them. Also ordered the wedge salad which was SO good. I'll be judging any salad based on this wedge salad moving forward. Talk about a swing and a miss. Traveled all the way here from the financial district on a Sunday evening to just be utterly disappointed. To start the place basically had as many dogs as humans at it which was ridiculous. Then I ordered a coke as my drink and the waiter brought over a cold brew (ew, never have had a coffee before) and they showed no remorse for their mistake. We were so wanting to love this place. We are big Hometown Barbecue fans. We have been following it's construction and opening since its inception. It's advertised to be a local tavern with dining. Here is where it starts to go downhill. As a business owner, I never write bad reviews, but we did not have a great experience there. My husband made a reservation on Resy. He put down first choice table but bar was okay. They sat us at the counter which are high tables lining the front windows. This is the area that should be set up for people having a drink or waiting for table and having a drink. My husband told the hostess that we had made the reservation weeks in advance and this is where we are sitting? The response was that Resy puts it on some kind first come first serve order. After telling the hostess that we didn't want to sit there they blamed the online reservation system and they had no control over who got what table. We replied that this was unacceptable. I wanted to leave right away but my husband insisted on staying. I am very short so sitting there was really uncomfortable. No where to rest my feet. Hardly a date night set up. Thank God my husband is married to me because this would have been a terrible date. Okay - on my on to the food. The food may be slightly simple for the price point. The waiter was great - no complaints there. The menu is small but we came for the chicken. We started with the croquettes and corn which were both delicious. The chicken was fine but lacked something. There was nothing about the experience of dining there that would make us come back a second time. We are big foodies and dine out a lot. We love going to Red Hook, and we were hoping to have another go-to spot. We were really put off by the unapologetic tone of the management. Also the 3 'fries' were burnt and dry, which is much more sad and noticeable when there are only 3 - The wedge salad was by far the best thing we tried (worth the trip) - Special duck confit appetizer was hella dry, but flavors were good Also, it was 4 hour wait, when we were quoted 2.5 hours... the host was super nice about it, but that extra 1.5 hours is brutal. There are no words that can accurately describe how incredible the steak and burger are at Red Hook Tavern. I live in Brooklyn and stumbled upon this place an afternoon after visiting Ikea. I didn't realize I was in for the best steak of my life. After the first visit, I had to go back as the burgers looked incredible. I've had many burgers in my life, none compare to the perfection of the Red Hook Tavern burger. Service is friendly and attentive. Every time I've gone (now 4 times because I like to find excuses to take friends and selfishly justify having another burger) I've been welcomed by a warm host and served by knowledgeable servers. Sides are tasty as well. I've tried the ham croquettes, corn dish, and blue cheese salad. No complaints, but the real reason to go to Red Hook Tavern is the Beef! The only suggestion I would have is to find a way to make it more accessible to locals. Right now, getting a reservation is near impossible. It would be nice to find a way to prioritize the immediate, local community. read more
