I don't know how this place for so many good reviews. It's not very clean, there was a French fry floating around in our stale tortilla chips, the salsa was cold and from a jar, the hot sauce bottle were sticky and grungy, the rice and beans were cold and flavorless and dried out, and the tacos were bland. We ate there for the first time tonight and we're very pleasantly surprised. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. They have a small patio dining area in the back that can be closed in or open air on nice days. We are out there and enjoyed the fresh air. Visiting this quaint little town called Traverse and stumbled into this Mexican Restaurant. Unbeknownst to me was I going to encounter a true mixologist. Bill the bartender surprised me with one of the best Spicy Margaritas! Sour mix is made every couple of days. On another note was told to try the Shandy, it's a draft beer with a shot of lemonade. We had a really good experience at Red Mesa grill. The drinks- there is an expansive selection of tequilas and margaritas - if you want it they've got it. The food is Mexican with a Caribbean twist. I had the chicken chimichanga which was really good. My other friends had shrimp tacos , veggie fajitas , the jerk chicken bowl - all really good. You know the food is good when the table gets quiet . We also had 12 teenagers back at our vacation rental that we ordered carryout for. 12 different meals . The server meticulously took the order and the staff did a great job packaging and labeling each item so that it would be easy for us. My wife had a steak but really it was sliced like fajitas instead of a steak so wondered why they asked her how she wanted it cooked lol. This place is delicious! I was up visiting a friend and we came here for lunch. I had the Gordita and just wowzer. The chips and salsa are good, it's just good. Like if I come back to visit I'll just be eating here. It's like 10x better than your local Mexican place, that's the best way to describe it. What impressed me the most was the way this restaurant is following COVID precautions- everyone wearing their mask properly, tables spaced out and shields between the booths. 1st time here, I had the tacos, 3 different kinds, spiced beef, beef Barbara, and shredded beef. They were great!! Very flavorful, and they were packed full!! Food was bland and the skinny margaritas were served with a lemon, not a lime. I have never seen that anywhere before. Not sure what the deal was with that. I don't know, usually I agree or am in alignment with most reviews but this one I just don't get all the high praise this place gets?? I thought the food was marginal at best! I think they are attempting to copy Bobby Flay's Mesa Grill, but doing it poorly. I order guacamole - it was horrible; the only thing you could taste was the lime juice that poured all over it. The menu said it was supposed to be freshly made, but I can't imagine this was fresh. It actually had the consistency of pre-made you get in a tub. A couple of us ordered the enchilada platter, it was ok, but not great. Not much flavor to any of it, meats were totally over seasoned with smokey flavor, and I like smoked meat flavor, but it's like they were trying to do too much with it. Another person had the Brazilian Beef meal, he said it was okay too but not great. One thing that was outstanding was the margarita's. I had the Don Julio one and it was great. This place was packed and I can see why! We had to wait 45 minutes despite "calling ahead" because they don't take reservations. There were 8 of us so seating a big party like that took awhile. I got a mango margarita, they actually use real mangoes, so it's on the thicker side. Unfortunately it wasn't very strong at all, and I couldn't taste the tequila... maybe they gave a virgin one. It did taste really good either way. For dinner ordered the Jerk BBQ Salmon and I really enjoyed it, despite dropping half a place of rice and beans down the front of my shirt. I tried my boyfriends chicken enchilada (on the dryer side) and his bean and beef burrito. The burrito had a nice smokey flavor to it, and they used chunks of beef instead of ground beef which gave the burrito a nice textural contrast... it wasn't just one smushy mass. The portions are pretty huge and everyone at my table had leftovers. Our waitress was friendly and helpful and came around often asking about drink refills etc. The tables we were seated at on the patio were a little cramped for 8 people, and my boyfriend was complaining the whole time he didn't have enough leg room. True to the cherry country- it's like the best cherries you have ever ever had- at the peak season minced into the drink. I could have had 10 of these.
